Abstract:We develop Kummer theory for algebraic function fields in finitely many transcendental variables. We consider any finitely generated Kummer extension (possibly, over a cyclotomic extension) of an algebraic function field, and describe the structure of its Galois group. Our results show in a precise sense how the questions of computing the degrees of these extensions and of computing the group structures of their Galois groups reduce to the corresponding questions for the Kummer extensions of their constant fields.

Abstract:We introduce a condition for Hopf-Galois extensions that generalizes the notion of Kummer Galois extension. Namely, an $H$-Galois extension $L/K$ is $H$-Kummer if $L$ can be generated by adjoining to $K$ a finite set $S$ of eigenvectors for the action of the Hopf algebra $H$ on $L$. This extends the classical Kummer condition for the classical Galois structure. With this new perspective, we shall characterize a class of $H$-Kummer extensions $L/K$ as radical extensions that are linearly disjoint with the $n$-th cyclotomic extension of $K$. This result generalizes the description of Kummer Galois extensions as radical extensions of a field containing the $n$-th roots of the unity. The main tool is the construction of a product Hopf-Galois structure on the compositum of almost classically Galois extensions $L_1/K$, $L_2/K$ such that $L_1\cap M_2=L_2\cap M_1=K$, where $M_i$ is a field such that $L_iM_i=\widetilde{L}_i$, the normal closure of $L_i/K$. When $L/K$ is an extension of number or $p$-adic fields, we shall derive criteria on the freeness of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_L$ over its associated order in an almost classically Galois structure on $L/K$.

Abstract:We study the algebraic $K$-theory of the ring of continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space with values in a local division ring, e.g., a local field: We compute its negative $K$-theory and show its $K$-regularity. The complex case reproves the results of Rosenberg, Friedlander--Walker, and Cortiñas--Thom. Our consideration in the real case proves two previously unconfirmed claims made by Rosenberg in 1990. The algebraic nature of our methods enables us to deal with the nonarchimedean and noncommutative cases analogously.

Lifting Galois representations via Kummer flags

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be either i) the absolute Galois group of a local field $F$, or ii) the topological fundamental group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus $g$. In case i), assume that $\mu_{p^2} \subset F$. We give an elementary and unified proof that every representation $\rho_1: \Gamma \to \mathbf{GL}_d(\mathbb{F}_p)$ lifts to a representation $\rho_2: \Gamma \to \mathbf{GL}_d(\mathbb{Z}/p^2)$. [In case i), it is understood these are continuous.] The actual statement is much stronger: for $r \geq 1$, under "suitable" assumptions, triangular representations $\rho_r: \Gamma \to \mathbf{B}_d(\mathbb{Z}/p^r)$ lift to $\rho_{r+1}: \Gamma \to \mathbf{B}_d(\mathbb{Z}/p^{r+1})$, in the strongest possible step-by-step sense. Here "suitable" is made precise by the concept of $\textit{Kummer flag}$. An essential aspect of this work, is to identify the common properties of groups i) and ii), that suffice to ensure the existence of such lifts.

Abstract:For every number field and every Cartan Killing type, there is an associated split simple algebraic group. We examine whether the corresponding arithmetic subgroups are profinitely solitary so that the commensurability class of the profinite completion determines the commensurability class of the group among finitely generated residually finite groups. Assuming Grothendieck rigidity, we essentially solve the problem by Galois cohomological means.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a variety (possibly non-complete or singular) over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $0$. For a prime number $\ell$, let $\rho_\ell$ be the Galois representation on the first $\ell$-adic cohomology of $X$. We show that if $\ell$ varies the image of $\rho_\ell$ is of bounded index in the group of $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-points of its Zariski closure. We use this to improve a recent result of Litt about arithmetic representations of geometric fundamental groups. Litt's result says that there exist constants $N = N(X,\ell)$ such that every arithmetic representation $\pi_1(X_{\bar{k}}) \to \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_\ell)$ that is trivial modulo $\ell^N$ is unipotent. We show that these constants can in fact be chosen independently of $\ell$.

Abstract:Abstract We consider the semi-direct products $G={\mathbb{Z}}^{2}\rtimes GL_{2}({\mathbb{Z}}), {\mathbb{Z}}^{2}\rtimes SL_{2}({\mathbb{Z}})$, and ${\mathbb{Z}}^{2}\rtimes \Gamma (2)$ (where $\Gamma (2)$ is the congruence subgroup of level 2). For each of them, we compute both sides of the Baum–Connes conjecture, namely the equivariant $K$-homology of the classifying space $\underline{E}G$ for proper actions on the left-hand side, and the analytical K-theory of the reduced group $C^{*}$-algebra on the right-hand side. The computation of the LHS is made possible by the existence of a 3-dimensional model for $\underline{E}G$, which allows to replace equivariant K-homology by Bredon homology. We pay due attention to the presence of torsion in $G$, leading to an extensive study of the wallpaper groups associated with finite subgroups. For the first and third groups, the computations in $K_{0}$ provide explicit generators that are matched by the Baum–Connes assembly map.

Abstract:In this expository article, we outline a basic theory of group (co)homology and prove a cohomological formulation of the Local Reciprocity Law: $${\rm Gal}(L/K)^{\rm ab} \cong H_T^{-2}({\rm Gal}(L/K),\mathbb{Z}) \cong H_T^{0}({\rm Gal}(L/K),L^\times) \cong \frac{K^\times}{{\rm Nm}_{L/K}(L^\times)}$$ We first recall basic facts about local fields and homological algebra. Then we define group (co)homology, Tate cohomology, and furnish a toolbox. The Local Reciprocity Law is proven in an abstract cohomological setting, then applied to the case of local fields.

Abstract:We use constructions of versal cohomology classes based on a new notion of ‘presentable functors’, to describe a relationship between the problems of bounding symbol length in cohomology and of finding the minimal degree of a splitting field. The constructions involved are then also used to describe generic splitting varieties for degree 2 cohomology with coefficients in a commutative algebraic group of multiplicative type.

Abstract:We introduce a theory of cyclic Kummer extensions of commutative rings for partial Galois extensions of finite groups, extending some of the well-known results of the theory of Kummer extensions of commutative rings developed by A. Z. Borevich. In particular, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions to determine when a partial $n$-kummerian extension is equivalent to either a radical or a $I$-radical extension, for some subgroup $I$ of the cyclic group $C_n$.

Abstract:We relate two different proposals to extend the étale topology into homotopy theory, namely via the notion of finite cover introduced by Mathew and via the notion of separable commutative algebra introduced by Balmer. We show that finite covers are precisely those separable commutative algebras with underlying dualizable module, which have a locally constant and finite degree function. We then use Galois theory to classify separable commutative algebras in numerous categories of interest. Examples include the category of modules over a connective $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring $R$ which is either connective or even periodic with $\pi_0(R)$ regular Noetherian in which $2$ acts invertibly, the stable module category of a finite group of $p$-rank one and the derived category of a qcqs scheme.

The Galois-equivariant $K$-theory of finite fields

Abstract:We compute the $RO(G)$-graded equivariant algebraic $K$-groups of a finite field with an action by its Galois group $G$. Specifically, we show these $K$-groups split as the sum of an explicitly computable term and the well-studied $RO(G)$-graded coefficient groups of the equivariant Eilenberg--MacLane spectrum $H\underline{\mathbb Z}$. Our comparison between the equivariant $K$-theory spectrum and $H\underline{\mathbb Z}$ further shows they share the same Tate spectra and geometric fixed point spectra. In the case where $G$ has prime order, we provide an explicit presentation of the equivariant $K$-groups.

Abstract:The paper revisits concretely the algebraic K-theory in the light of the global program of Langlands by taking into account the new algebraic interpretation of homotopy viewed as deformation(s) of Galois representations given by compactified algebraic groups. More concretely, we introduce higher algebraic bilinear K-theories referring to homotopy and cohomotopy and related to the reducible bilinear global program of Langlands as well as mixed higher bilinear KK-theories related to dynamical geometric bilinear global program of Langlands.

Abstract:In this note, making use of noncommutative l l -adic cohomology, we extend the generalized Riemann hypothesis from the realm of algebraic geometry to the broad setting of geometric noncommutative schemes in the sense of Orlov. As a first application, we prove that the generalized Riemann hypothesis is invariant under derived equivalences and homological projective duality. As a second application, we prove the noncommutative generalized Riemann hypothesis in some new cases.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study local cohomology in the noncommutative algebraic geometry framework of Artin and Zhang. The noncommutative spaces are obtained by base change of a Grothendieck category that is locally noetherian or strongly locally noetherian. Using what we call elementary objects and their injective hulls, we develop a theory of supports and associated primes in these categories. We apply our theory to study a general functorial setup that requires certain conditions on the injective hulls of elementary objects and gives us spectral sequences for derived functors associated to local cohomology objects, as well as generalized local cohomology and also generalized Nagata ideal transforms.

Abstract:Given a finite category T, we consider the functor category [T,A], where A can in particular be any quasi-abelian category. Examples of quasi-abelian categories are given by any abelian category but also by non-exact additive categories as the categories of torsion(-free) abelian groups, topological abelian groups, locally compact abelian groups, Banach spaces and Fréchet spaces. In this situation, the categories of various internal categorical structures in A, such as the categories of internal n-fold groupoids, are equivalent to functor categories [T,A] for a suitable category T. For a replete full subcategory S of T, we define F to be the full subcategory of [T,A] whose objects are given by the functors G with G(X)=0 for all objects X not in S. We prove that F is a torsion-free Birkhoff subcategory of [T,A]. This allows us to study (higher) central extensions from categorical Galois theory in [T,A] with respect to F and generalized Hopf formulae for homology.

Abstract:We establish connections between the concepts of Noetherian, regular coherent, and regular n-coherent categories for Z-linear categories with finitely many objects and the corresponding notions for unital rings. These connections enable us to obtain a negative K-theory vanishing result, a fundamental theorem, and a homotopy invariance result for the K-theory of Z-linear categories.

Abstract:If k is an arbitrary field, we construct a category of k-1-motives in which every commutative algebraic k-group G has a dual object $G^{\vee}$. When k is a local field of arbitrary characteristic, we establish Pontryagin duality theorems that relate the fppf cohomology groups of G to the hypercohomology groups of the k-1-motive $G^{\vee}$. We also obtain a duality theorem for the second cohomology group of an arbitrary k-1-motive. These results have applications (to be discussed elsewhere) to certain extensions of Lichtenbaum-van Hamel duality to a class of non-smooth proper k-varieties.
