Abstract:Given polynomials $f_1,\ldots,f_n$ in $m$ variables with integral coefficients, we give upper bounds for the number of integral $m$-tuples $\mathbf{u}_1,\ldots, \mathbf{u}_n$ of bounded height such that $f_1(\mathbf{u}_1), \ldots, f_n(\mathbf{u}_n)$ are multiplicatively dependent. We also prove, under certain conditions, a finiteness result for $\mathbf{u} \in \mathbb{Z}^m$ with relatively prime entries such that $f_1(\mathbf{u}),\ldots,f_n(\mathbf{u})$ are multiplicatively dependent.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain new bounds for the tensor rank of multiplication in any extension of $\F_2$. In particular, it also enables us to obtain the best known asymptotic bound. In this aim, we use the generalized algorithm of type Chudnovsky with derivative evaluations on places of degree one, two and four applied on the descent over $\F_2$ of a Garcia-Stichtenoth tower of algebraic function fields defined over $\F_{2^4}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish some finiteness results about the multiplicative dependence of rational values modulo sets which are `close' (with respect to the Weil height) to division groups of finitely generated multiplicative groups of a number field $K$. For example, we show that under some conditions on rational functions $f_1, \ldots, f_n\in K(X)$, there are only finitely many elements $\alpha \in K$ such that $f_1(\alpha),\ldots,f_n(\alpha)$ are multiplicatively dependent modulo such sets.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> We obtain new uniform bounds for the symmetric tensor rank of multiplication in finite extensions of any finite field $\mathbb {F}_p$ or $\mathbb {F}_{p^2}$ where p denotes a prime number $\ge 5$ . In this aim, we use the symmetric Chudnovsky-type generalized algorithm applied on sufficiently dense families of modular curves defined over $\mathbb {F}_{p^2}$ attaining the Drinfeld–Vladuts bound and on the descent of these families to the definition field $\mathbb {F}_p$ . These families are obtained thanks to prime number density theorems of type Hoheisel, in particular a result due to Dudek (Funct Approx Commmentarii Math, 55(2):177–197, 2016).

Computing epsilon multiplicities in graded algebras

Abstract:This article investigates the computational aspects of the $\varepsilon$-multiplicity. Primarily, we show that the $\varepsilon$-multiplicity of a homogeneous ideal $I$ in a two-dimensional standard graded domain of finite type over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic, is always a rational number. In this situation, we produce a formula for the $\varepsilon$-multiplicity of $I$ in terms of certain mixed multiplicities associated to $I$. In any dimension, under the assumptions that the saturated Rees algebra of $I$ is finitely generated, we give a different expression of the $\varepsilon$-multiplicity in terms of mixed multiplicities by using the Veronese degree. This enabled us to make various explicit computations of $\varepsilon$-multiplicities. We further write a Macaulay2 algorithm to compute $\varepsilon$-multiplicity (under the Noetherian hypotheses) even when the base ring is not necessarily standard graded.

Points of bounded height in images of morphisms of weighted projective stacks with applications to counting elliptic curves

Abstract:Asymptotics are given for the number of rational points in the domain of a morphism of weighted projective stacks whose images have bounded height and satisfy a (possibly infinite) set of local conditions. As a consequence we obtain results for counting elliptic curves over number fields with prescribed level structures, including the cases of $\Gamma(N)$ for $N\in\{1,2,3,4,5\}$, $\Gamma_1(N)$ for $N\in\{1,2,\dots,10,12\}$, and $\Gamma_0(N)$ for $N\in\{1,2,4,6,8,9,12,16,18\}$. In all cases we give an asymptotic with an expression for the leading coefficient, and in many cases we also give a power-saving error term.

On the multiplicity of the eigenvalues of discrete tori

Abstract:It is well known that the standard flat torus $\mathbb{T}^2=\mathbb{R}^2/\Z^2$ has arbitrarily large Laplacian-eigenvalue multiplicities. We prove, however, that $24$ is the optimal upper bound for the multiplicities of the nonzero eigenvalues of a $2$-dimensional discrete torus. For general higher dimension discrete tori, we characterize the eigenvalues with large multiplicities. As consequences, we get uniform boundedness results of the multiplicity for a long range and an optimal global bound for the multiplicity. Our main tool of proof is the theory of vanishing sums of roots of unity.

Abstract:We consider the set $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ of $n\times n$-matrices with integer elements of size at most $H$ and obtain a new upper bound on the number of matrices from $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ with a given characteristic polynomial $f \in \mathbb Z[X]$, which is uniform with respect to $f$. This complements the asymptotic formula of A. Eskin, S. Mozes and N. Shah (1996) in which $f$ has to be fixed and irreducible. Using this result, among others, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the number of $s$-tuples of matrices from $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$, satisfying various multiplicative relations, including multiplicative dependence and bounded generation of a subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb Q)$. These problems generalise those studied in the scalar case $n=1$ by F. Pappalardi, M. Sha, I. E. Shparlinski and C. L. Stewart (2018) with an obvious distinction due to the non-commutativity of matrices. Motivated by these problems, we also prove various properties of the variety of complex matrices with fixed characteristic polynomial, including computing the degree of this variety.

Abstract:We classify the pairs of polynomials $f,g \in \mathbb{C}[X]$ having orbits satisfying infinitely many multiplicative dependence relations, extending a result of Ghioca, Tucker and Zieve. Moreover, we show that given $f_1,\ldots, f_n$ from a certain class of polynomials with integer coefficients, the vectors of indices $(m_1,\ldots,m_n)$ such that $f_1^{m_1}(0),\ldots,f_n^{m_n}(0)$ are multiplictively dependent are sparse. We also classify the pairs $f,g \in \mathbb{Q}[X]$ such that there are infinitely many $(x,y) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$ satisfying $f(x)^k=g(y)^\ell$ for some (possibly varying) non-zero integers $k,\ell$.

Sparse systems with high local multiplicity

Abstract:Consider a sparse system of n Laurent polynomials in n variables with complex coefficients and support in a finite lattice set A. The maximal number of isolated roots of the system in the complex n-torus is known to be the normalized volume of the convex hull of A (the BKK bound). We explore the following question: if the cardinality of A equals n+m+1, what is the maximum local intersection multiplicity at one point in the torus in terms of n and m? This study was initiated by Gabrielov in the multivariate case. We give an upper bound that is always sharp when m=1 and, under a generic technical hypothesis, it is considerably smaller for any dimension n and codimension m. We also present, for any value of n and m, a particular sparse system with high local multiplicity with exponents in the vertices of a cyclic polytope and we explain the rationale of our choice. Our work raises several interesting questions.

Abstract:We prove uniform upper bounds on the number of integral points of bounded height on affine varieties. If $X$ is an irreducible affine variety of degree $d\geq 4$ in $\mathbb{A}^n$ which is not the preimage of a curve under a linear map $\mathbb{A}^n\to \mathbb{A}^{n-\dim X+1}$, then we prove that $X$ has at most $O_{d,n,\varepsilon}(B^{\dim X - 1 + \varepsilon})$ integral points up to height $B$. This is a strong analogue of dimension growth for projective varieties, and improves upon a theorem due to Pila, and a theorem due to Browning-Heath-Brown-Salberger. Our techniques follow the $p$-adic determinant method, in the spirit of Heath-Brown, but with improvements due to Salberger, Walsh, and Castryck-Cluckers-Dittmann-Nguyen. The main difficulty is to count integral points on lines on an affine surface in $\mathbb{A}^3$, for which we develop point-counting results for curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$. We also formulate and prove analogous results over global fields, following work by Paredes-Sasyk.

Suppose that $\boldsymbol{F}$ is a nonsingular system and $n\ge D^2 4^{D+6}R^5$. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of prime solutions to $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$, whose main term is positive if (i) $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ has a nonsingular solution over the $p$-adic units $\mathbb{U}_p$ for all primes $p$, and (ii) $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ has a nonsingular solution in the open cube $(0,1)^n$. This can be viewed as a smooth local-global principle for $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ with differing degrees. It follows that, under (i) and (ii), the set of prime solutions to $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ is Zariski dense in the set of its solutions.

Algorithms for $p$-adic Heights on Hyperelliptic Curves of Arbitrary Reduction

Abstract:In this paper, we develop an algorithm for computing Coleman--Gross (and hence Nekovář) $p$-adic heights on hyperelliptic curves over number fields with arbitrary reduction type above $p$. This height is defined as a sum of local heights at each finite place and we use algorithms for Vologodsky integrals, developed by Katz and the second-named author, to compute the local heights above $p$. We also discuss an alternative method to compute these for odd degree genus 2 curves via $p$-adic sigma functions, via work of the first-named author. For both approaches one needs to choose a splitting of the Hodge filtration. A canonical choice for this is due to Blakestad in the case of an odd degree curve of genus $2$ that has semistable ordinary reduction at $p$. We provide an algorithm to compute Blakestad's splitting, which is conjecturally the unit root splitting for the action of Frobenius. We give several numerical examples, including the first worked quadratic Chabauty example in the literature for a curve with bad reduction.
