Abstract:Research on power values of power sums has gained much attention of late, partially due to the explosion of refinements in multiple advanced tools in (computational) Number Theory in recent years. In this survey, we present the key tools and techniques employed thus far in the (explicit) resolution of Diophantine problems, as well as an overview of existing results. We also state some open problems that naturally arise in the process.

Exponential sums over integers without large prime divisors

Abstract:We obtain a new bound on exponential sums over integers without large prime divisors, improving that of Fouvry and Tenenbaum (1991). The improvement is based on exploiting the trilinear structure of certain exponential sums, appearing in the argument. We combine this idea with some input from additive combinatorics and, for a fixed integer $\nu\ne 0$, we also obtain new bounds on exponential sums with $\nu$-th powers of such integers.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a real polynomial with irrational leading co-efficient. In this article, we derive distribution of $f(n)$ modulo one for all $n$ with at least three divisors and also we study distribution of $f(n)$ for all square-free $n$ with at least two prime factors. We study exponential sums when weighted by divisor functions and exponential sums over square free numbers. In particular, we are interested in evaluating \begin{align*} \sum_{n\leq N}\tau(n)e\left(f(n)\right) ~\text{and}~\sum_{n\leq N}\mu^2(n)e\left(f(n)\right), \end{align*} for some polynomial $f$, where $\tau$ is the divisor function and $\mu$ is the Möbius function. We get non-trivial estimates when the leading co-efficient $\alpha$ of $f$ belongs to the minor arc.

Abstract:Gerard and Washington proved that, for $k > -1$, the number of primes less than $x^{k+1}$ can be well approximated by summing the $k$-th powers of all primes up to $x$. We extend this result to primes in arithmetic progressions: we prove that the number of primes $p\equiv n \pmod m$ less than $x^{k+1}$ is asymptotic to the sum of $k$-th powers of all primes $p\equiv n \pmod m$ up to $x$. We prove that the prime power sum approximation tends to be an underestimate for positive $k$ and an overestimate for negative $k$, and quantify for different values of $k$ how well the approximation works for $x$ between $10^4$ and $10^8.$

Abstract:Under the assumption of the Riemann Hypothesis, we prove explicit quantitative relations between hypothetical error terms in the asymptotic formulae for truncated mean-square average of exponential sums over primes and in the mean-square of primes in short intervals. We also remark that such relations are connected with a more precise form of Montgomery's pair-correlation conjecture.

Abstract:We survey the potential for progress in additive number theory arising from recent advances concerning major arc bounds associated with mean value estimates for smooth Weyl sums. We focus attention on the problem of representing large positive integers as sums of a square and a number of $k$-th powers. We show that such representations exist when the number of $k$-th powers is at least $\lfloor c_0k\rfloor +2$, where $c_0=2.136294\ldots $. By developing an abstract framework capable of handling sequences with appropriate distribution properties, analogous conclusions are obtained, for example, when the square is restricted to have prime argument.

Abstract:We prove that given $\lambda \in \mathbb{R}$ such that $0 < \lambda < 1$, then $\pi(x + x^\lambda) - \pi(x) \sim \displaystyle \frac{x^\lambda}{\log(x)}$. This solves a long-standing problem concerning the existence of primes in short intervals. In particular, we give a positive answer (for all sufficiently large number) to some old conjectures about prime numbers, such as Legendre's conjecture about the existence of at least two primes between two consecutive squares.

Abstract:We study short sums of algebraic trace functions via the $q$-analogue of van der Corput method, and develop methods of arithmetic exponent pairs that coincide with the classical case while the moduli has sufficiently good factorizations. As an application, we prove a quadratic analogue of Brun-Titchmarsh theorem on average, bounding the number of primes $pleqslant X$ with $p^2+1equiv0pmod q$. The other two applications include a larger level of distribution of divisor functions in arithmetic progressions and a sub-Weyl subconvex bound of Dirichlet $L$-functions studied previously by Irving.

Abstract:In this paper we study mixed sums of primes and linear recurrences. We show that if m=2(mod 4) and m+1 is a prime then $(m^{2^n-1}-1)/(m-1)\not=m^n+p^a$ for any n=3,4,... and prime power p^a. We also prove that if a>1 is an integer, u_0=0, u_1=1 and u_{i+1}=au_i+u_{i-1} for i=1,2,3,..., then all the sums u_m+au_n (m,n=1,2,3,...) are distinct. One of our conjectures states that any integer n>4 can be written as the sum of an odd prime, an odd Fibonacci number and a positive Fibonacci number.

Abstract:In this paper, it is proved that every sufficiently large even integer can be represented as the sum of two squares of primes, two cubes of primes, two biquadrates of primes and 16 powers of 2. Furthermore, there are at least 5.313% odd integers that can be represented as one square of prime, one cube of prime and one biquadrate of prime. This result constitutes a refinement upon that of R. Zhang [8].

Abstract:A celebrated theorem of Delange gives a sufficient condition for an arithmetic function to be the sum of the associated Ramanujan expansion with the coefficients provided by a previous result of Wintner. By applying the Delange theorem to the correlation of the von Mangoldt function with its incomplete form, we deduce an inequality involving the counting function of the prime numbers in arithmetic progressions. A remarkable aspect is that such an inequality is equivalent to the famous conjectural formula by Hardy and Littlewood for the twin primes.

Mean values of multiplicative functions and applications to the distribution of the sum of divisors

Abstract:We provide uniform bounds on mean values of multiplicative functions under very general hypotheses, detecting certain power savings missed in known results in the literature. As an application, we study the distribution of the sum-of-divisors function $\sigma(n)$ in coprime residue classes to moduli $q \le (\log x)^K$, obtaining extensions of results of Śliwa that are uniform in a wide range of $q$ and optimal in various parameters. As a consequence of our results, we obtain that the values of $\sigma(n)$ sampled over $n \le x$ with $\sigma(n)$ coprime to $q$ are asymptotically equidistributed among the coprime residue classes mod $q$, uniformly for odd $q \le (\log x)^K$. On the other hand, if $q$ is even, then equidistribution is restored provided we restrict to inputs $n$ having sufficiently many prime divisors exceeding $q$.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a method of evaluating general exponential sums with rational amplitude functions for multiple variables which complements works by T. Cochrane and Z. Zheng on the single variable case. As an application, for $n\geq 2$, a fixed natural number, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the (weighted) number of solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $x_1^2+x_2^2+...+x_n^2\equiv x_{n+1}^2\bmod{p^m}$ in small boxes, thus establishing an equidistribution result for these solutions.

Abstract:Using combinatorial techniques, we derive a recurrence identity that expresses an exponential power sum with negative powers in terms of another exponential power sum with positive powers. Consequently, we derive a formula for the power sum of the first $k$ natural numbers when the power is odd, which when used in combination with Faulhaber's formula for computing power sums helps us to retrieve the Bernoulli numbers in certain cases.
