Abstract:In various places in the literature it is stated that every separable linear order embeds into the real line. This is, however, not the case, at least not with respect to the usual definition of separability. We correct this misconception.

Abstract:Let ( P ) be a property of -algebras which may be satiesfied or not, and be the set of separable -algebras which satiesfies ( P ). We give a sufficient condition for ( P ) to admit a universal separable element in the sense that for any , there exists a surjective -homomorphism , and use the sufficient condition to show that when ( P ) is "unital with stable rank n ", "the small projection property" or "unital with stable exponential lenght b ", the sufficient condition is satisfied and hence there exists a corresponding universal -algebra. We also give a stronger condition for property ( P ), which additionally implies that the set of corresponding universal -algebras is uncountable, and use it to show that the set of universal unital separable -algebras of stable rank n is uncountable as an example.

Abstract:Working in the framework of Borel reducibility, we study various notions of embeddability between groups. We prove that the embeddability between countable groups, the topological embeddability between (discrete) Polish groups, and the isometric embeddability between separable groups with a bounded bi-invariant complete metric are all invariantly universal analytic quasi-orders. This strengthens some results from [Wil14] and [FLR09].

Abstract:It is shown that a separated sequence of points in the unit disc of the complex plane is in fact uniformly separated, if there exists a certain intermediate sequence whose separated subsequences are uniformly separated. This property is applied to improve a recent result in the theory of differential equations.

Abstract:We compare three notions of genericity of separable metric structures. Our analysis provides a general model theoretic technique of showing that structures are generic in descriptive set theoretic (topological) sense and in measure theoretic sense. In particular, it gives a new perspective on Vershik's theorems on genericity and randomness of Urysohn's space among separable metric spaces.

Abstract:A linear operator $U$ acting boundedly on an infinite-dimensional separable complex Hilbert space $H$ is universal if every linear bounded operator acting on $H$ is similar to a scalar multiple of a restriction of $U$ to one of its invariant subspaces. It turns out that characterizing the lattice of closed invariant subspaces of a universal operator is equivalent to solve the Invariant Subspace Problem for Hilbert spaces. In this paper, we consider invertible weighted hyperbolic composition operators and we prove the universality of the translations by eigenvalues of such operators, acting on Hardy and weighted Bergman spaces. Some consequences for the Banach space case are also discussed.

Low Dimensional Invariant Embeddings for Universal Geometric Learning

Abstract:This paper studies separating invariants: mappings on $D$ dimensional domains which are invariant to an appropriate group action, and which separate orbits. The motivation for this study comes from the usefulness of separating invariants in proving universality of equivariant neural network architectures. We observe that in several cases the cardinality of separating invariants proposed in the machine learning literature is much larger than the dimension $D$. As a result, the theoretical universal constructions based on these separating invariants is unrealistically large. Our goal in this paper is to resolve this issue. We show that when a continuous family of semi-algebraic separating invariants is available, separation can be obtained by randomly selecting $2D+1 $ of these invariants. We apply this methodology to obtain an efficient scheme for computing separating invariants for several classical group actions which have been studied in the invariant learning literature. Examples include matrix multiplication actions on point clouds by permutations, rotations, and various other linear groups. Often the requirement of invariant separation is relaxed and only generic separation is required. In this case, we show that only $D+1$ invariants are required. More importantly, generic invariants are often significantly easier to compute, as we illustrate by discussing generic and full separation for weighted graphs. Finally we outline an approach for proving that separating invariants can be constructed also when the random parameters have finite precision.

Abstract:Abstract In 1998 R. Downey formulated a problem: to describe a property $P$ of classical order types, which guarantees that if $\mathcal{L}$ is a low linear order and $P$ holds for the order type of $\mathcal{L}$ then $\mathcal{L}$ is isomorphic to a computable linear order. We find a new such property $P$. Also, we give an upper bound on a complexity of an isomorphism between computable and low copies and show that this bound is sharp.

Abstract:The shuffle of a non-empty countable set $ S $ of linear orders is the (unique up to isomorphism) linear order $ \Xi(S) $ obtained by fixing a coloring function $ \chi: \mathbb{Q} \to S $ having fibers dense in $ \mathbb{Q} $ and replacing each rational $ q $ in $ (\mathbb{Q}, <) $ with an isomorphic copy of $ \chi(q) $. We prove that any two countable shuffles that embed as convex subsets into each other are order isomorphic.

On universal subspaces for Lie groups

Abstract:Let $U$ be a finite dimentional vector space over $\mathbb R$ or $\mathbb C$, and let $\rho:G\to GL(U)$ be a representation of a connected Lie group $G$. A linear subspace $V\subset U$ is called universal if every orbit of $G$ meets $V$. We study universal subspaces for Lie groups, especially compact Lie groups. Jinpeng and Doković approached universality for compact groups through a certain topological obstruction. They showed that the non-vanishing of the obstruction class is sufficient for the universality of $V$, and asked whether it is also necessary under certain conditions. In this article, we show that the answer to the question is negative in general, but we discuss some important situations where the answer is positive. We show that if $G$ is solvable and $\rho:G\to GL(U)$ is a complex representation, then the only universal complex subspace is $U$ itself. We also investigate the question of universality for a Levi subgroup.

Effective conjugacy separability of virtually abelian groups

Abstract:A natural question for groups $H$ is which data can be detected in its finite quotients. A subset $X \subset H$ is called separable if for all $h\in H \setminus X$, there exists an epimorphism $\varphi$ to a finite group $Q$ such that $\varphi(h)\notin\varphi(X)$. More specifically, a group is said to be conjugacy separable if every conjugacy class is separable. It is known that many classes of groups are conjugacy separable, including virtually free and polycyclic groups. The minimal order of the quotient $Q$, in terms of the complexity of the conjugacy classes under consideration, is captured by the conjugacy separability function $\mathrm{Conj}_H: \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$. This function is in general ill understood, in fact the only large class of groups for which it is known exactly are the abelian groups. Indeed, in this case $\mathrm{Conj}_H$ is equal to the residual finiteness function, that is the size of quotients needed to separate singletons, and thus logarithmic if the group is infinite. Recent work has described the residual finiteness function for the class of virtually abelian groups, which gives a lower bound for the conjugacy separability function. The main result of this paper is a characterization of $\mathrm{Conj}_H$ for every virtually abelian group $H$. If the corresponding extension is associated with an irreducible representation over $\mathbb{Q}$, we demonstrate that we obtain the same function as the residual finiteness function. However, if the representation is not irreducible, we find an expression that is in some cases strictly larger, which we illustrate with several examples.

Genericity and Universality for Operator Ideals

Abstract:A bounded linear operator $U$ between Banach spaces is universal for the complement of some operator ideal $\mathfrak{J}$ if it is a member of the complement and it factors through every element of the complement of $\mathfrak{J}$. In the first part of this paper, we produce new universal operators for the complements of several ideals and give examples of ideals whose complements do not admit such operators. In the second part of the paper, we use Descriptive Set Theory to study operator ideals. After restricting attention to operators between separable Banach spaces, we call an operator ideal $\mathfrak{J}$ generic if anytime an operator $A$ has the property that every operator in $\mathfrak{J}$ factors through a restriction of $A$, then every operator between separable Banach spaces factors through a restriction of $A$. We prove that many of classical operator ideals are generic (i.e. strictly singular, weakly compact, Banach-Saks) and give a sufficient condition, based on the complexity of the ideal, for when the complement does not admit a universal operator. Another result is a new proof of a theorem of M. Girardi and W.B. Johnson which states that there is no universal operator for the complement of the ideal of completely continuous operators.

Abstract:In this paper, the class of all linearly ordered topological spaces (LOTS) quasi-ordered by the embeddability relation is investigated. In ZFC it is proved that for countable LOTS this quasi-order has both a maximal (universal) element and a finite basis. For the class of uncountable LOTS of cardinality $\kappa$ it is proved that this quasi-order has no maximal element for $\kappa$ at least the size of the continuum and that in fact the dominating number for such quasi-orders is maximal, i.e. $2^\kappa$. Certain subclasses of LOTS, such as the separable LOTS, are studied with respect to the top and internal structure of their respective embedding quasi-order. The basis problem for uncountable LOTS is also considered; assuming the Proper Forcing Axiom there is an eleven element basis for the class of uncountable LOTS and a six element basis for the class of dense uncountable LOTS in which all points have countable cofinality and coinitiality.

Separability of Schur rings over abelian groups of odd order

Abstract:An $S$-ring (a Schur ring) is said to be separable with respect to a class of groups $\mathcal{K}$ if every algebraic isomorphism from the $S$-ring in question to an $S$-ring over a group from $\mathcal{K}$ is induced by a combinatorial isomorphism. A finite group $G$ is said to be separable with respect to $\mathcal{K}$ if every $S$-ring over $G$ is separable with respect to $\mathcal{K}$. We prove that every abelian group $G$ of order $9p$, where $p$ is a prime, is separable with respect to the class of all finite abelian groups. Modulo previously obtained results, this completes a classification of noncyclic abelian groups of odd order that are separable with respect to the class of all finite abelian groups. Also this implies that the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension of the class of Cayley graphs over $G$ is at most 2.

Linear independence over naturally-ordered semirings with applications to dimension arguments in extremal combinatorics

Abstract:A family of subsets $\mathcal{F} \subseteq \mathcal{P}(\{1, 2, \ldots, n\})$ has the disparate union property if any two disjoint subfamilies $\mathcal{F}_1, \mathcal{F}_2 \subseteq \mathcal{F}$ have distinct unions $\bigcup \mathcal{F}_1 \neq \bigcup \mathcal{F}_2$; what is the maximal size of a family with the disparate union property? Is there a simple and efficiently computable characterization of size-maximal families? This paper highlights a class of partially-ordered semirings -- difference ordered semirings with a multiplicatively absorbing element -- and shows it is common and easily constructed. We prove that a suitably modified definition of linear independence for semimodules over such semirings enjoys the same maximality property as for vector spaces, and can furthermore be efficiently detected by the bideterminant. These properties allow us to extend dimension argument in extremal combinatorics and provide simple and direct solutions to the puzzles above.

Abstract:The theory of extensive categories determines in particular the notion of separable MV-algebra (equivalently, of separable unital lattice-ordered Abelian group). We establish the following structure theorem: An MV-algebra is separable if, and only if, it is a finite product of algebras of rational numbers—i.e., of subalgebras of the MV-algebra [ 0 , 1 ] ∩ Q . Beyond its intrinsic algebraic interest, this research is motivated by the long-term programme of developing the algebraic geometry of the opposite of the category of MV-algebras, in analogy with the classical case of commutative K-algebras over a field K.

I address this question by introducing 'Local Separators' of graphs. Applications include: 1. A unique decomposition theorem for graphs along their local 2-separators analogous to the 2-separator theorem; 2. an exact characterisation of graphs with no bounded subdivision of a wheel.

Abstract:Given a nonempty set $\mathcal{L}$ of linear orders, we say that the linear order $L$ is $\mathcal{L}$-convex embeddable into the linear order $L'$ if it is possible to partition $L$ into convex sets indexed by some element of $\mathcal{L}$ which are isomorphic to convex subsets of $L'$ ordered in the same way. This notion generalizes convex embeddability and (finite) piecewise convex embeddability (both studied in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2309.09910" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.09910">arXiv:2309.09910</a>), which are the special cases $\mathcal{L} = \{\mathbf{1}\}$ and $\mathcal{L} = \mathsf{Fin}$. We focus mainly on the behavior of these relations on the set of countable linear orders, first characterizing when they are transitive, and hence a quasi-order. We then study these quasi-orders from a combinatorial point of view, and analyze their complexity with respect to Borel reducibility. Finally, we extend our analysis to uncountable linear orders.
