Abstract:where / ( / ) is a differentiate function defined on the real number interval [a, b), and x may be a real or complex number with x*0 and x*l. Obviously, the case for x = l of (1.1) could be generally treated by means of the well-known Euler-Maclaurin summation formula. The object of this paper is to find a general summation formula for (1.1) that could be applied readily to some interesting special cases, e.g., those with f{i)-t (2 ei?), / ( / ) = logf (V>1), and f(t) = q (0<q<l)9 respectively. Related results will be presented in Sections 3-5. Recall that for the particular case f(t) = t and [a, b) = [0, oo) with/? being a positive integer, we have the classical result (cf. [1], [2], [4])

Abstract:In this paper we present a generalization of Faulhaber's formula to sums of arbitrary complex powers $m\in\mathbb{C}$. These summation formulas for sums of the form $\sum_{k=1}^{\lfloor x\rfloor}k^{m}$ and $\sum_{k=1}^{n}k^{m}$, where $x\in\mathbb{R}^{+}$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$, are based on a series acceleration involving Stirling numbers of the first kind. While it is well-known that the corresponding expressions obtained from the Euler-Maclaurin summation formula diverge, our summation formulas are all very rapidly convergent.

Abstract:Factorial series played a major role in Stirling's classic book "Methodus Differentialis" (1730), but now only a few specialists still use them. This article wants to show that this neglect is unjustified, and that factorial series are useful numerical tools for the summation of divergent (inverse) power series. This is documented by summing the divergent asymptotic expansion for the exponential integral $E_{1} (z)$ and the factorially divergent Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation expansion for the quartic anharmonic oscillator. Stirling numbers play a key role since they occur as coefficients in expansions of an inverse power in terms of inverse Pochhammer symbols and vice versa. It is shown that the relationships involving Stirling numbers are special cases of more general orthogonal and triangular transformations.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss a method that utilizes the recurrence of $A_{n,k}$ to solve summations of the form $\sum_{k=n_0}^{n} A_{n,k}$. It is observed that by repeating the procedure, the upper bound of summation is reduced and tilts toward the lower bound. This method of summation is mostly suitable for combinatorial sequences such as binomial coefficients, Stirling numbers of both kinds, etc. After the main method is displayed, some examples are illustrated. Some useful identities about Stirling and r-Stirling numbers are obtained. Finally, two transforms called rising and falling factorial transforms which turn the basis of power polynomials into factorial basis are derived. These transforms verify and simplify the results obtained in the examples section. Also, these transforms describe the relationship between fractional derivatives (or fractional integrals) and falling factorial (or rising factorial) by its series expansion.

Explicit formulae for generalized Stirling and Eulerian numbers

Abstract:In this article we generalize the $q$-difference operator due to Carlitz in order to derive explicit sum formulae for several extensions of Stirling numbers of the second kind, including complete homogeneous symmetric functions, complementary symmetric functions, $r$-Whitney numbers and elliptic analogues of rook, Stirling and Lah numbers. Furthermore, we generalize Carlitz' $q$-Eulerian numbers to a Lagrange polynomial extension. We define them by generalizing Worpitzky's identity appropriately, and derive a recursion and an explicit sum formulae. Special cases include $r$-Whitney Eulerian numbers and elliptic Eulerian numbers.

Abstract:The practical usefulness of Levin-type nonlinear sequence transformations as numerical tools for the summation of divergent series or for the convergence acceleration of slowly converging series is nowadays beyond dispute. The Weniger transformation, in particular, is able to accomplish spectacular results when used to overcome resummation problems, often outperforming better-known resummation techniques, like, for instance, Padé approximants. However, our theoretical understanding of Levin-type transformations is still far from being satisfactory and is particularly bad as far as the decoding of factorially divergent series is concerned. The Stieltjes series represent a class of power series of fundamental interest in mathematical physics. In the present paper, it is shown how the converging factor of any order of typical Stieltjes series can be expressed as an inverse factorial series, whose terms are analytically retrieved through a simple recursive algorithm. A few examples of applications are presented, in order to show the effectiveness and implementation ease of the algorithm itself. We believe that further investigations of the asymptotic forms of the remainder terms, encoded within the converging factors, could eventually lead toward a more general theory of the asymptotic behavior of the Weniger transformation when it is applied to Stieltjes series in high transformation orders. It is a rather ambitious project, which should be worthy of being pursued in the future.

Abstract:In the theory of hypergeometric series and generalized hypergeometric series, classical summation theorems, such as the two of Gauss and those of Kummer and Bailey for the series 2F1; those of Watson, Dixon, Whipple, and Saalschutz for the series 3F2; and others, play a key role. Applications of these classical summation theorems are well known. Berndt pointed out that a large number of interesting summations (including Ramanujan's summations and the Gregory–Leibniz pi summation) can be obtained very quickly by employing the above-mentioned classical summation theorems. Also, several interesting results involving products of generalized hypergeometric series have been obtained by Bailey by employing the above-mentioned classical summation theorems. Recently, the above-mentioned classical summation theorems have been generalized and extended. In our present investigations, our aim is to demonstrate the applications of the extended Kummer's summation theorem in establishing (i) extensions of Gauss's second summation theorem and Bailey's summation theorem; (ii) extensions of several summations (including Ramanujan's summations); (iii) extensions of several results involving products of generalized hypergeometric series; and (iv) an extension of classical Dixon's summation theorem. As special cases, we recover several known summations (including several Ramanujan summations and the Gregory–Leibniz pi summation) and various results involving products of generalized hypergeometric series due to Bailey.

Abstract:In this work, we establish some characteristics for a sequence, Aα(n,k), including recurrence relations, generating function and inversion formula, etc. Based on the sequence, we derive, by means of the generating function approach, some transformation formulas concerning certain combinatorial numbers named after Lah, Stirling, harmonic, Cauchy and Catalan, as well as several closed finite sums. In addition, the relationship between Aα(n,k) and r-Whitney–Lah numbers is established, and some formulas for the r-Whitney–Lah numbers are obtained.

Abstract:We perform polylogarithmic reductions for several classes of infinite sums motivated by Z.-W. Sun's related works in 2022--2023. For certain choices of parameters, these series can be expressed by cyclotomic multiple zeta values of levels $4$, $5$, $6$, $7$, $8$, $9$, $10$, and $12$. In particular, we obtain closed forms of the series $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{x_0^k}{(k+1)\binom{3k}k} \ \ \text{and}\ \ \sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{x_0^k}{k^2\binom{3k}k}$$ for any $x_0\in(-27/4,27/4)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we present five different formulas for both discrete and fractional iterations of an invertible power series $f$ utilizing a novel and unifying approach from umbral calculus. Established formulas are extended, and their proofs simplified, while new formulas are introduced. In particular, through the use of $q$-calculus identities, we eliminate the requirement for $f'(0)$ to equal $1$ and, consequently, the corresponding new expressions for the iterative logarithm are derived.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce telescoping continued fractions to find lower bounds for the error term $r_n$ in Stirling's approximation $\displaystyle n! = \sqrt{2\pi}n^{n+1/2}e^{-n}e^{r_n}.$ This improves lower bounds given earlier by Cesàro (1922), Robbins (1955), Nanjundiah (1959), Maria (1965) and Popov (2017). The expression is in terms of a continued fraction, together with an algorithm to find successive terms of this continued fraction. The technique we introduce allows us to experimentally obtain upper and lower bounds for a sequence of convergents of a continued fraction in terms of a difference of two continued fractions.
