Abstract:The Graph Isomorphism (GI) problem is a theoretically interesting problem because it has not been proven to be in P nor to be NP-complete. Babai made a breakthrough in 2015 when announcing a quasipolynomial time algorithm for GI problem. Babai's work gives the most theoretically efficient algorithm for GI, as well as a strong evidence favoring the idea that class GI $\ne$ NP and thus P $\ne$ NP. Based on Babai's algorithm, we prove that GI can further be solved by a parallel algorithm that runs in polynomial time using a quasipolynomial number of processors. We achieve that result by identifying the bottlenecks in Babai's algorithms and parallelizing them. In particular, we prove that color refinement can be computed in parallel logarithmic time using a polynomial number of processors, and the $k$-dimensional WL refinement can be computed in parallel polynomial time using a quasipolynomial number of processors. Our work suggests that Graph Isomorphism and GI-complete problems can be computed efficiently in a parallel computer, and provides insights on speeding up parallel GI programs in practice.

Abstract:We show that the Graph Isomorphism (GI) problem and the more general problems of String Isomorphism (SI) andCoset Intersection (CI) can be solved in quasipolynomial(exp((logn)O(1))) time. The best previous bound for GI was exp(O( √n log n)), where n is the number of vertices (Luks, 1983); for the other two problems, the bound was similar, exp(O~(√ n)), where n is the size of the permutation domain (Babai, 1983). Following the approach of Luks’s seminal 1980/82 paper, the problem we actually address is SI. This problem takes two strings of length n and a permutation group G of degree n (the “ambient group”) as input (G is given by a list of generators) and asks whether or not one of the strings can be transformed into the other by some element of G. Luks’s divide-and-conquer algorithm for SI proceeds by recursion on the ambient group. We build on Luks’s framework and attack the obstructions to efficient Luks recurrence via an interplay between local and global symmetry. We construct group theoretic “local certificates” to certify the presence or absence of local symmetry, aggregate the negative certificates to canonical k-ary relations where k = O(log n), and employ combinatorial canonical partitioning techniques to split the k-ary relational structure for efficient divide-and- conquer. We show that in a well–defined sense, Johnson graphs are the only obstructions to effective canonical partitioning. The central element of the algorithm is the “local certificates” routine which is based on a new group theoretic result, the “Unaffected stabilizers lemma,” that allows us to construct global automorphisms out of local information.

Abstract: Determination of quasi-invariant generalized functions is important for a variety of problems in representation theory, notably character theory and restriction problems. In this note, we review some new and easy-to-use techniques to show vanishing of quasi-invariant generalized functions, developed in the recent work of the authors (Uniqueness of Ginzburg-Rallis models: the Archimedean case, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363, (2011), 2763-2802). The first two techniques involve geometric notions attached to submanifolds, which we call metrical properness and unipotent $\chi$-incompatibility. The third one is analytic in nature, and it arises from the first occurrence phenomenon in Howe correspondence. We also highlight how these techniques quickly lead to two well-known uniqueness results, on trilinear forms and Whittaker models.

Abstract:We construct a global B-model for any quasi-homogeneous polynomial f that has properties similar to the properties of the physic's B-model on a Calabi-Yau manifold. The main ingredients in our construction are K. Saito's theory of primitive forms and Givental's higher genus reconstruction. More precisely, we consider the moduli space M-mar degrees of the so-called marginal deformations of f . For each point sigma is an element of M-mam degrees mar we introduce the notion of an opposite subspace in the twisted de Rham cohomology of the corresponding singularity f(sigma) and prove that opposite subspaces are in one-to-one correspondence with the splittings of the Hodge structure in the vanishing cohomology of f(sigma). Therefore, according to M. Saito, an opposite subspace gives rise to a semi-simple Frobenius structure on the space of miniversal deformations of f(sigma). Using Givental's higher genus reconstruction we define a total ancestor potential A(sigma) ((h) over bar, q) whose properties can be described quite elegantly in terms of the properties of the corresponding opposite subspace. For example, if the opposite subspace corresponds to the splitting of the Hodge structure given by complex conjugation, then the total ancestor potential is monodromy invariant and it satisfies the BCOV holomorphic anomaly equations. The coefficients of the total ancestor potential could be viewed as quasi-modular forms on M-Mar degrees in a certain generalized sense. As an application of our construction, we consider the case of a Fermat polynomial W that defines a Calabi-Yau hypersurface X-w in a weighted-projective space. We have constructed two opposite subspaces and proved that the corresponding total ancestor potentials can be identified with respectively the total ancestor potential of the orbifold quotient X-W/(G) over tilde (W) and the total ancestor potential of FJRW invariants corresponding to (W, G(W)). Here G(W) is the maximal group of diagonal symmetries of W and (G) over tilde (W) is a quotient of G(W) by the subgroup of those elements that act trivially on X-W. In particular, our result establishes the so-called Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the pair (W, G(W)).

Abstract:We develop extremely tight novel approximations, lower bounds and upper bounds for the Gaussian <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$Q$ </tex-math></inline-formula>-function and offer multiple alternatives for the coefficient sets thereof, which are optimized in terms of the four most relevant criteria: minimax absolute/relative error and total absolute/relative error. To minimize error maximum, we modify the classic Remez algorithm to comply with the challenging nonlinearity that pertains to the proposed expression for approximations and bounds. On the other hand, we minimize the total error numerically using the quasi-Newton algorithm. The proposed approximations and bounds are so well matching to the actual <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$Q$ </tex-math></inline-formula>-function that they can be regarded as virtually exact in many applications since absolute and relative errors of 10<sup>−9</sup> and 10<sup>−5</sup>, respectively, are reached with only ten terms. The significant advance in accuracy is shown by numerical comparisons with key reference cases.

New Bounds on Quotient Polynomials with Applications to Exact Divisibility and Divisibility Testing of Sparse Polynomials

Abstract:We prove that for monic polynomials $f, g \in \mathbb{C}[x]$ such that $g$ divides $f$, the $\ell_2$-norm of the quotient polynomial $f/g$ is bounded by $\lVert f \rVert_1 \cdot \tilde{O}(\lVert{g}\rVert_0^3\text{deg}^2{ f})^{\lVert{g}\rVert_0 - 1}$. This improves upon the previously known exponential (in $\text{deg}{ f}$) bounds for general polynomials. Our results implies that the trivial long division algorithm runs in quasi-linear time relative to the input size and number of terms of the quotient polynomial $f/g$, thus solving a long-standing problem on exact divisibility of sparse polynomials. We also study the problem of bounding the number of terms of $f/g$ in some special cases. When $f, g \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ and $g$ is a cyclotomic-free (i.e., it has no cyclotomic factors) trinomial, we prove that $\lVert{f/g}\rVert_0 \leq O(\lVert{f}\rVert_0 \text{size}({f})^2 \cdot \log^6{\text{deg}{ g}})$. When $g$ is a binomial with $g(\pm 1) \neq 0$, we prove that the sparsity is at most $O(\lVert{f}\rVert_0 ( \log{\lVert{f}\rVert_0} + \log{\lVert{f}\rVert_{\infty}}))$. Both upper bounds are polynomial in the input-size. We leverage these results and give a polynomial time algorithm for deciding whether a cyclotomic-free trinomial divides a sparse polynomial over the integers. As our last result, we present a polynomial time algorithm for testing divisibility by pentanomials over small finite fields when $\text{deg}{ f} = \tilde{O}(\text{deg}{ g})$.

Abstract:A surprising 'converse to the polynomial method' of Aaronson et al. Here we show that such a result does not generalize to quartic polynomials and 2-query algorithms, even when we allow for additive approximations. We also show that the additive approximation implied by their result is tight for bounded bilinear forms, which gives a new characterization of the Grothendieck constant in terms of 1-query quantum algorithms. Along the way we provide reformulations of the completely bounded norm of a form, and its dual norm.

On converses to the polynomial method

Abstract:A surprising 'converse to the polynomial method' of Aaronson et al. (CCC'16) shows that any bounded quadratic polynomial can be computed exactly in expectation by a 1-query algorithm up to a universal multiplicative factor related to the famous Grothendieck constant. A natural question posed there asks if bounded quartic polynomials can be approximated by $2$-query quantum algorithms. Arunachalam, Palazuelos and the first author showed that there is no direct analogue of the result of Aaronson et al. in this case. We improve on this result in the following ways: First, we point out and fix a small error in the construction that has to do with a translation from cubic to quartic polynomials. Second, we give a completely explicit example based on techniques from additive combinatorics. Third, we show that the result still holds when we allow for a small additive error. For this, we apply an SDP characterization of Gribling and Laurent (QIP'19) for the completely-bounded approximate degree.

Improved Circuit Lower Bounds and Quantum-Classical Separations

Abstract:Kumar used a switching lemma to prove exponential-size lower bounds for a circuit class GC^0 that not only contains AC^0 but can--with a single gate--compute functions that require exponential-size TC^0 circuits. His main result was that switching-lemma lower bounds for AC^0 lift to GC^0 with no loss in parameters, even though GC^0 requires exponential-size TC^0 circuits. Informally, GC^0 is AC^0 with unbounded-fan-in gates that behave arbitrarily inside a sufficiently small Hamming ball but must be constant outside it. We show that polynomial-method lower bounds for AC^0[p] lift to GC^0[p] with no loss in parameters, complementing Kumar's result for GC^0 and the switching lemma. As an application, we prove Majority requires depth-d GC^0[p] circuits of size $2^{\Omega(n^{1/2(d-1)})}$, matching the state-of-the-art lower bounds for AC^0[p]. We also show that E^NP requires exponential-size GCC^0 circuits (the union of GC^0[m] for all m), extending the result of Williams. It is striking that the switching lemma, polynomial method, and algorithmic method all generalize to GC^0-related classes, with the first two methods doing so without any loss. We also establish the strongest known unconditional separations between quantum and classical circuits: 1. There's an oracle relative to which BQP is not contained in the class of languages decidable by uniform families of size-$2^{n^{O(1)}}$ GC^0 circuits, generalizing Raz and Tal's relativized separation of BQP from the polynomial hierarchy. 2. There's a search problem that QNC^0 circuits can solve but average-case hard for exponential-size GC^0 circuits. 3. There's a search problem that QNC^0/qpoly circuits can solve but average-case hard for exponential-size GC^0[p] circuits. 4. There's an interactive problem that QNC^0 circuits can solve but exponential-size GC^0[p] circuits cannot.

Abstract:Let $E=\mathbb{Q}\big(\sqrt{-d}\big)$ be an imaginary quadratic field for a square-free positive integer $d$, and let $\mathcal{O}$ be its ring of integers. For each positive integer $m$, let $I_m$ be the free Hermitian lattice over $\mathcal{O}$ with an orthonormal basis, let $\mathfrak{S}_d(1)$ be the set consisting of all positive definite integral unary Hermitian lattices over $\mathcal{O}$ that can be represented by some $I_m$, and let $g_d(1)$ be the least positive integer such that all Hermitian lattices in $\mathfrak{S}_d(1)$ can be uniformly represented by $I_{g_d(1)}$. The main results of this work provide an algorithm to calculate the explicit form of $\mathfrak{S}_d(1)$ and the exact value of $g_d(1)$ for every imaginary quadratic field $E$, which can be viewed as a natural extension of the Pythagoras number in the lattice setting.

Representability of G-functions as rational functions in hypergeometric series

Abstract:Fresán and Jossen have given a negative answer to a question of Siegel about the representability of every $E$-function as a polynomial with algebraic coefficients in $E$-functions of type ${}_pF_q[\underline{a};\underline{b};\gamma x^{q-p+1}]$ with $q\geq p\geq 0$, $\gamma \in \overline{\mathbb Q}$ and rational parameters $\underline{a}, \underline{b}$. In this paper, we study, in a more general context, a similar question for $G$-functions asked by Fischler and the second author: can every $G$-function be represented as a polynomial with algebraic coefficients in $G$-functions of type $\mu(x)\cdot {}_pF_{p-1}[\underline{a};\underline{b};\lambda(x)]$ with $p\ge 1$, rational parameters $\underline{a},\underline{b}$ and $\mu,\lambda$ algebraic over $\mathbb Q(x)$ with $\lambda(0)=0$? They have shown the answer to be negative under a generalization of Grothendieck's Period Conjecture and a technical assumption on the~$\lambda$'s. Using differential Galois theory, we prove that, for every $N\in \mathbb N$, there exists a $G$-function which can not be represented as a rational function with coefficients in $\overline{\mathbb C(x)}$ of solutions of linear differential equations with coefficients in $\mathbb C(x)$ and at most $N$ singularities in $\mathbb{P}^1 (\mathbb C)$. As a corollary, we deduce that not all $G$-functions can be represented as a rational function in hypergeometric series of the above mentioned type, when the $\lambda$'s are rational functions with degrees of their numerators and denominators bounded by an arbitrarily large fixed constant. This provides an unconditional negative answer to the question asked by Fischler and the second author for such~$\lambda$'s.

Abstract:There is no known polynomial-time algorithm for graph isomorphism testing, but elementary combinatorial "refinement" algorithms seem to be very efficient in practice. Some philosophical justification is provided by a classical theorem of Babai, Erdős and Selkow: an extremely simple polynomial-time combinatorial algorithm (variously known as "naïve refinement", "naïve vertex classification", "colour refinement" or the "1-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm") yields a so-called canonical labelling scheme for "almost all graphs". More precisely, for a typical outcome of a random graph $G(n,1/2)$, this simple combinatorial algorithm assigns labels to vertices in a way that easily permits isomorphism-testing against any other graph. We improve the Babai-Erdős-Selkow theorem in two directions. First, we consider randomly perturbed graphs, in accordance with the smoothed analysis philosophy of Spielman and Teng: for any graph $G$, naïve refinement becomes effective after a tiny random perturbation to $G$ (specifically, the addition and removal of $O(n\log n)$ random edges). Actually, with a twist on naïve refinement, we show that $O(n)$ random additions and removals suffice. These results significantly improve on previous work of Gaudio-Rácz-Sridhar, and are in certain senses best-possible. Second, we complete a long line of research on canonical labelling of random graphs: for any $p$ (possibly depending on $n$), we prove that a random graph $G(n,p)$ can typically be canonically labelled in polynomial time. This is most interesting in the extremely sparse regime where $p$ has order of magnitude $c/n$; denser regimes were previously handled by Bollobás, Czajka-Pandurangan, and Linial-Mosheiff. Our proof also provides a description of the automorphism group of a typical outcome of $G(n,p_n)$ (slightly correcting a prediction of Linial-Mosheiff).

Geometric G-functions and Atypicality

Abstract:We describe a general method for giving $p$-adic interpretations of $G$-functions arising from degenerating periods of smooth projective algebraic varieties. Using this, we are able to implement a strategy due to André for bounding heights of moduli points where period functions acquire unusual algebraic relations. This leads to new results on Galois lower bounds for special moduli, and new cases of the Zilber-Pink conjecture. In particular, we establish the first Galois-orbit lower bounds on CM moduli in non-Shimura settings. As a more technical contribution, we introduce a refinement of the Pila-Zannier strategy capable of handling Zilber-Pink-type atypical intersection problems in arbitrary dimension and for arbitrary smooth projective families.

Upper bounds on homogeneous fractional Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev constants via parabolic estimates

Abstract:Common proofs of the Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev (GNS) do not provide explicit bounds on the involved constants, unless a sharp constant is being determined. GNS inequalities naturally occur in error estimates for numerical approximations. In particular, bounds on GNS constants allow us to provide explicit a priori estimates. We provide an algorithm that determines upper bounds on the non-endpoint homogeneous GNS inequalities in terms of explicit upper bounds for Young's convolution inequality and parabolic estimates. Our method is based on the heat-kernel representation of the inverse Laplacian, from which we deduce interpolation estimates.

In Quantum Computing Speedup Illusory?: The False Coin of "Counting Function Evaluations"

Abstract:By using a new way to encode Boolean functions in a reversible gate, an algorithm is developed in quantum computing over Z_2, symbolized QC/2, (as opposed to QC over C) that needs only one function evaluation to solve the Grover Database Search Problem of finding a designated record among 2^m records for any m. In the usual Grover algorithm in quantum computing over C, one needs essentially Sqrt(2^m) function evaluations as opposed to the average of (2^m)/2 functions evaluations needed in the classical algorithm. The one function evaluation of the QC/2 algorithm (for any m) represents such a super speedup, even over the Grover algorithm in QC/C, that one feels something has gone awry. Indeed, our analysis of the transparent calculations of Boolean functions over Z_2 shows that the classical algorithm is just repackaged in a rather obvious way in the single function evaluation of the QC/2 algorithm--whereas the calculations are hidden and non-transparent in the Grover QC/C algorithm using C. The conclusion in both cases (which is rather obvious in the QC/2 case) is that "counting function evaluations" is a false coin to measure speedup in the comparison between quantum and classical computing.

Almost-Sharp Quantitative Duffin-Schaeffer without GCD Graphs

Abstract:In recent work, Koukoulopoulos, Maynard and Yang proved an almost sharp quantitative bound for the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture, using the Koukoulopoulos-Maynard technique of GCD graphs. This coincided with a simplification of the previous best known argument by Hauke, Vazquez and Walker, which avoided the use of the GCD graph machinery. In the present paper, we extend this argument to the new elements of the proof of Koukoulopoulos-Maynard-Yang. Combined with the work of Hauke-Vazquez-Walker, this provides a new proof of the almost sharp bound for the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture, which avoids the use of GCD graphs entirely.

Abstract:We focus on exploring more potential of Longa and Sica's algo-rithm (ASIACRYPT 2012), which is an elaborate iterated Cornacchia algo-rithm that can compute short bases for 4-GLV decompositions. The algo-rithm consists of two sub-algorithms, the first one in the ring of integers Z and the second one in the Gaussian integer ring Z[i]. We observe that Z[i] in the second sub-algorithm can be replaced by another Euclidean do-main Z[omega] (omega = -1+root-3/2 ). As a consequence, we design a new twofold Cornacchia-type algorithm with a theoretic upper bound of output C center dot n(1/4), where C = 3+root 3 2 root 1 + |r| + |s| with small values r, s given by the curves. 2 The new twofold algorithm can be used to compute 4-GLV decompositions on two classes of curves. First it gives a new and unified method to compute all 4-GLV decompositions on j-invariant 0 elliptic curves over Fp2. Second it can be used to compute the 4-GLV decomposition on the Jacobian of the hyperel-liptic curve defined as C/F-p : y(2) = x(6) + ax(3) + b, which has an endomorphism phi with the characteristic equation phi(2) + phi + 1 = 0 (hence Z[phi] = Z[omega]). As far as we know, none of the previous algorithms can be used to compute the 4-GLV decomposition on the latter class of curves.
