Abstract:Let X be a subshift satisfy non-uniform structure. In this paper, we give quantitative estimate of the recurrence sets. These results can be applied to a large class of symbolic systems, including beta-shifts, S-gap shifts and their factors.

Abstract:There is much research on the dynamical complexity on irregular sets and level sets of ergodic average from the perspective of density in base space, the Hausdorff dimension, Lebesgue positive measure, positive or full topological entropy (and topological pressure), etc. However, this is not the case from the viewpoint of chaos. There are many results on the relationship of positive topological entropy and various chaos. However, positive topological entropy does not imply a strong version of chaos, called DC1. Therefore, it is non-trivial to study DC1 on irregular sets and level sets. In this paper, we will show that, for dynamical systems with specification properties, there exist uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets in irregular sets and level sets. Meanwhile, we prove that several recurrent level sets of points with different recurrent frequency have uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets. The major argument in proving the above results is that there exists uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets in saturated sets.

Abstract:The main theorem of this paper establishes a uniform syndeticity result concerning the multiple recurrence of measure-preserving actions on probability spaces. More precisely, for any integers and any , we prove the existence of and (dependent only on d, l, and ) such that the following holds: Consider a solvable group of derived length l, a probability space , and d pairwise commuting measure-preserving -actions on . Let E be a measurable set in X with . Then, K many (left) translates of cover . This result extends and refines uniformity results by Furstenberg and Katznelson. As a combinatorial application, we obtain the following uniformity result. For any integers and any , there are and (dependent only on d, l, and ) such that for all finite solvable groups G of derived length l and any subset with (where m is the uniform measure on G), we have that K-many (left) translates of cover G. The proof of our main result is a consequence of an ultralimit version of Austin's amenable ergodic Szeméredi theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we study quantitative recurrence and the shrinking target problem for dynamical systems coming from overlapping iterated function systems. Such iterated function systems have the important property that a point often has several distinct choices of forward orbit. As is demonstrated in this paper, this non-uniqueness leads to different behaviour to that observed in the traditional setting where every point has a unique forward orbit. We prove several almost sure results on the Lebesgue measure of the set of points satisfying a given recurrence rate, and on the Lebesgue measure of the set of points returning to a shrinking target infinitely often. In certain cases, when the Lebesgue measure is zero, we also obtain Hausdorff dimension bounds. One interesting aspect of our approach is that it allows us to handle targets that are not simply balls, but may have a more exotic geometry.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose two new nonblocking properties of automata as quantitative measures of maximal distances to marker states. The first property, called {\em quantitative nonblockingness}, captures the practical requirement that at least one of the marker states (representing e.g. task completion) be reachable within a prescribed number of steps from any non-marker state and following any trajectory of the system. The second property, called {\em heterogeneously quantitative nonblockingness}, distinguishes individual marker states and requires that each marker state be reached within a given bounded number of steps from any other state and following any trajectory of the system. Accordingly, we formulate two new problems of quantitatively nonblocking supervisory control and heterogeneously quantitatively nonblocking supervisory control, and characterize their solvabilities in terms of new concepts of quantitative language completability and heterogeneously quantitative language completability, respectively. It is proved that there exists the unique supremal (heterogeneously) quantitatively completable sublanguage of a given language, and we develop effective algorithms to compute the supremal sublanguages. Finally, combining with the algorithm of computing the supremal controllable sublanguage, we design algorithms to compute the maximally permissive solutions to the formulated (heterogeneously) quantitatively nonblocking supervisory control problems.

Abstract:For any dynamical system T : X -> X of a compact metric space X with g-almost product property and uniform separation property, under the assumptions that the periodic points are dense in X and the periodic measures are dense in the space of invariant measures, we distinguish various periodic-like recurrences and find that they all carry full topological entropy and so do their gap-sets. In particular, this implies that any two kind of periodic-like recurrences are essentially different. Moreover, we coordinate periodic-like recurrences with (ir)regularity and obtain lots of generalized multi-fractal analyses for all continuous observable functions. These results are suitable for all beta-shifts (beta > 1), topological mixing subshifts of finite type, topological mixing expanding maps or topological mixing hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, etc.Roughly speaking, we combine many different "eyes" (i.e., observable functions and periodic-like recurrences) to observe the dynamical complexity and obtain a Refined Dynamical Structure for Recurrence Theory and Multi-fractal Analysis. We exhibit different asymptotic behaviour (different scaling, different limit point process) depending on the respective dimensions of the measures of the two underlying dynamical systems. It behaves either as for the direct product of the underlying systems, or as for the -extension of the driving system (also studied in this article), or as a more sophisticated process.

Abstract:Recurrence rate, determinism, average line length, and entropy of line lengths are measures of complexity in recurrence quantification analysis, that help to understand the structure, predictability and complexity of dynamical systems. In this paper, we provide explicit formulas for these characteristics for all binary substitutions of constant length. Moreover, we show that the determinism of such substitutions converges to one, which shows that these systems are highly predictable.

Abstract:A notion of monitored recurrence for discrete-time quantum processes was recently introduced in [Commun. Math. Phys., DOI <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1007/s00220-012-1645-2" href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s00220-012-1645-2" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1007/s00220-012-1645-2</a>] (see also <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1202.3903" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1202.3903">arXiv:1202.3903</a>) taking the initial state as an absorbing one. We extend this notion of monitored recurrence to absorbing subspaces of arbitrary finite dimension. The generating function approach leads to a connection with the well-known theory of operator-valued Schur functions. This is the cornerstone of a spectral characterization of subspace recurrence that generalizes some of the main results in the above mentioned paper. The spectral decomposition of the unitary step operator driving the evolution yields a spectral measure, which we project onto the subspace to obtain a new spectral measure that is purely singular iff the subspace is recurrent, and consists of a pure point spectrum with a finite number of masses precisely when all states in the subspace have a finite expected return time. This notion of subspace recurrence also links the concept of expected return time to an Aharonov-Anandan phase that, in contrast to the case of state recurrence, can be non-integer. Even more surprising is the fact that averaging such geometrical phases over the absorbing subspace yields an integer with a topological meaning, so that the averaged expected return time is always a rational number. Moreover, state recurrence can occasionally give higher return probabilities than subspace recurrence, a fact that reveals once more the counterintuitive behavior of quantum systems. All these phenomena are illustrated with explicit examples, including as a natural application the analysis of site recurrence for coined walks.

Abstract:We study properties of weakly mixing sets (of order n) in relation to proximality, sensitivity, scrambled tuples, Xiong chaotic sets and independent sets. Our main emphasis is on the structure of the set of transfer times N(U boolean AND A, V) between open sets U and V, both intersecting a weakly mixing set A. We find several conditions on properties of the set A that are equivalent to weak mixing.We also prove that on topological graphs weakly mixing sets of order 2 can be approximated arbitrarily closely by a weakly mixing set of all orders. This property is known to hold on the unit interval but is not true in general (there are systems with weakly mixing sets of order n but not n + 1).
Finding lower bounds on the growth and entropy of subshifts over countable groups

Abstract:We give a lower bound on the growth of a subshift based on a simple condition on the set of forbidden patterns defining that subshift. Aubrun et Al. showed a similar result based on the Lovász Local Lemma for subshift over any countable group and Bernshteyn extended their approach to deduce, amongst other things, some lower bound on the exponential growth of the subshift. However, our result has a simpler proof, is easier to use for applications, and provides better bounds on the applications from their articles (although it is not clear that our result is stronger in general). In the particular case of subshift over $\mathbb{Z}$ a similar but weaker condition given by Miller was known to imply nonemptiness of the associated shift. Pavlov used the same approach to provide a condition that implied exponential growth. We provide a version of our result for this particular setting and it is provably strictly stronger than the result of Pavlov and the result of Miller (and, in practice, leads to considerable improvement in the applications). We also apply our two results to a few different problems including strongly aperiodic subshifts, nonrepetitive subshifts, and Kolmogorov complexity of subshifts.

Abstract:We explore recurrence properties arising from dynamical approach to the van der Waerden theorem and similar combinatorial problems. We describe relations between these properties and study their consequences for dynamics. In particular, we present a measure-theoretical analog of a result of Glasner on multi-transitivity of topologically weakly mixing minimal maps. We also obtain a dynamical proof of the existence of a C-set with zero Banach density.

Abstract:This paper establishes topological (equi-)semiconjugacy and (equi-)conjugacy between induced non-autonomous set-valued systems and subshifts of finite type. First, some necessary and sufficient conditions are given for a non-autonomous discrete system to be topologically semiconjugate or conjugate to a subshift of finite type. Further, several sufficient conditions for it to be topologically equi-semiconjugate or equi-conjugate to a subshift of finite type are obtained. Consequently, estimations of topological entropy and several criteria of Li-Yorke chaos and distributional chaos in a sequence are derived. Second, the relationships of several related dynamical behaviors between the non-autonomous discrete system and its induced set-valued system are investigated. Based on these results, the paper furthermore establishes the topological (equi-)semiconjugacy and (equi-)conjugacy between induced set-valued systems and subshifts of finite type. Consequently, estimations of the topological entropy for the induced set-valued system are obtained, and several criteria of Li-Yorke chaos and distributional chaos in a sequence are established. Some of these results not only extend the existing related results for autonomous discrete systems to non-autonomous discrete systems, but also relax the assumptions of the counterparts in the literature. Two examples are finally provided for illustration.

On the structure of the Birkhoff-irregular set for some subshifts of finite type

Abstract:We study the set of irregular points for a class of topologically mixing subshifts of finite type. It is well known that despite the irregular set having zero measure for every invariant measure, it has full topological entropy and full Hausdorff dimension. We establish that for these systems the irregular set is not only abundant in terms of its dimensional properties, but also contains uncountably many pairwise disjoint subsets, each with full entropy and dimension. This results deepens our understanding of the complexity of irregular points in dynamical systems, highlighting their intricate structure and suggesting avenues for further explorations in related areas.

On distributional limit laws for recurrence

Abstract:For a probability measure preserving dynamical system $(\mathcal{X},f,\mu)$, the Poincaré Recurrence Theorem asserts that $\mu$-almost every orbit is recurrent with respect to its initial condition. This motivates study of the statistics of the process $X_n(x)=\text{dist}(f^n(x),x))$, and real-valued functions thereof. For a wide class of non-uniformly expanding dynamical systems, we show that the time-$n$ counting process $R_n(x)$ associated to the number recurrences below a certain radii sequence $r_n(\tau)$ follows an \emph{averaged} Poisson distribution $G(\tau)$. Furthermore, we obtain quantitative results on almost sure rates for the recurrence statistics of the process $X_n$.

Flare stars in the TW Hydrae association: The HIP 57269 system

Abstract:We discuss a new member candidate of the TW Hydrae association (TWA) among the stars of the Gershberg et al. (1999) flare star catalog. TWA is one of the closest known associations of young stars at about 60 pc. Three supposedly young flare stars are located in the same region of the sky as TWA. One of them (HIP 57269) shows strong Lithium absorption with spectral type K1/K2V and a high level of chromospheric and coronal activity. It is located at a distance of 48.7\pm6.3 pc in common with the five TWA members observed with Hipparcos (46.7 to 103.9 pc). HIP 57268 A has a wide companion C which also shows Lithium absorption at 6707Åand which has common proper motion with HIP 57269, as well as a close companion resolved visually by Tycho. HIP 57269A&C lie above the main sequence and are clearly pre-main-sequence stars. The UVW-space velocity is more consistent with the star system being a Pleiades super cluster member. The two other flare stars in the TWA sky region do not show Lithium at all and are, hence, unrelated.

Quantitative bounds for Gowers uniformity of the Möbius and von Mangoldt functions

Abstract:We establish quantitative bounds on the $U^k[N]$ Gowers norms of the Möbius function $\mu$ and the von Mangoldt function $\Lambda$ for all $k$, with error terms of shape $O((\log\log N)^{-c})$. As a consequence, we obtain quantitative bounds for the number of solutions to any linear system of equations of finite complexity in the primes, with the same shape of error terms. We also obtain the first quantitative bounds on the size of sets containing no $k$-term arithmetic progressions with shifted prime difference.

Abstract:Recurrence properties of systems and associated sets of integers that suffice for recurrence are classical objects in topological dynamics. We describe relations between recurrence in different sorts of systems, study ways to formulate finite versions of recurrence, and describe connections to combinatorial problems. In particular, we show that sets of Bohr recurrence (meaning sets of recurrence for rotations) suffice for recurrence in nilsystems. Additionally, we prove an extension of this property for multiple recurrence in affine systems.
