Abstract:We introduce a new higher categorical structure called a weakly globular n-fold category. This structure is based on iterated internal categories and on the notion of weak globularity. We identify a suitable class of pseudo-functors whose strictification produces weakly globular n-fold categories.

Abstract:Higher category theory is an exceedingly active area of research, whose rapid growth has been driven by its penetration into a diverse range of scientific fields. Its influence extends through key mathematical disciplines, notably homotopy theory, algebraic geometry and algebra, mathematical physics, to encompass important applications in logic, computer science and beyond. Higher categories provide a unifying language whose greatest strength lies in its ability to bridge between diverse areas and uncover novel applications. In this foundational work we introduce a new approach to higher categories. It builds upon the theory of iterated internal categories, one of the simplest possible higher categorical structures available, by adopting a novel and remarkably simple "weak globularity" postulate and demonstrating that the resulting model provides a fully general theory of weak n-categories. The latter are among the most complex of the higher structures, and are crucial for applications. We show that this new model of "weakly globular n-fold categories" is suitably equivalent to the well studied model of weak n-categories due to Tamsamani and Simpson.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of globular multicategory with homomorphism types. These structures arise when organizing collections of "higher category-like" objects such as type theories with identity types. We show how these globular multicategories can be used to construct various weak higher categorical structures of types and terms.

Abstract:We provide a complete description of the category of pseudo-categories (including pseudo-functors, natural and pseudo-natural transformations and pseudo modifications). A pseudo-category is a non strict version of an internal category. It was called a weak category and weak double category in some earlier papers. When internal to Cat it is at the same time a generalization of a bicategory and a double category.

Abstract:Weak structures abound in higher category theory, but are often suitably equivalent to stricter structures that are easier to understand. We extend strictification for tricategories and trihomomorphisms to trinatural transformations, trimodifications and perturbations. Along the way we distinguish between the operational coherences, which are possible to strictify, and the coherences on globular inputs, which remain weak. We introduce generalised path objects for $\mathbf{Gray}$-categories, which help reduce proofs in the three-dimensional setting to known results. Upon closing the resulting semi-strict trinatural transformations under composition, we state the hom-triequivalences of what we expect to be a `semi-strictification tetra-adjunction'.

Model structures for diagrammatic $(\infty, n)$-categories

Abstract:Diagrammatic sets admit a notion of internal equivalence in the sense of coinductive weak invertibility, with similar properties to its analogue in strict $\omega$-categories. We construct a model structure whose fibrant objects are diagrammatic sets in which every round pasting diagram is equivalent to a single cell -- its weak composite -- and propose them as a model of $(\infty, \infty)$-categories. For each $n < \infty$, we then construct a model structure whose fibrant objects are those $(\infty, \infty)$-categories whose cells in dimension $> n$ are all weakly invertible. We show that weak equivalences between fibrant objects are precisely morphisms that are essentially surjective on cells of all dimensions. On the way to this result, we also construct model structures for $(\infty, n)$-categories on marked diagrammatic sets, which split into a coinductive and an inductive case when $n = \infty$, and prove that they are Quillen equivalent to the unmarked model structures when $n < \infty$ and in the coinductive case of $n = \infty$. Finally, we prove that the $(\infty, 0)$-model structure is Quillen equivalent to the classical model structure on simplicial sets. This establishes the first proof of the homotopy hypothesis for a model of $\infty$-groupoids defined as $(\infty, \infty)$-categories whose cells in dimension $> 0$ are all weakly invertible.

Enhanced 2-categorical structures, two-dimensional limit sketches and the symmetry of internalisation

Abstract:Many structures of interest in two-dimensional category theory have aspects that are inherently strict. This strictness is not a limitation, but rather plays a fundamental role in the theory of such structures. For instance, a monoidal fibration is - crucially - a strict monoidal functor, rather than a pseudo or lax monoidal functor. Other examples include monoidal double categories, double fibrations, and intercategories. We provide an explanation for this phenomenon from the perspective of enhanced 2-categories, which are 2-categories having a distinguished subclass of 1-cells representing the strict morphisms. As part of our development, we introduce enhanced 2-categorical limit sketches and explain how this setting addresses shortcomings in the theory of 2-categorical limit sketches. In particular, we establish the symmetry of internalisation for such structures, entailing, for instance, that a monoidal double category is equivalently a pseudomonoid in an enhanced 2-category of double categories, or a pseudocategory in an enhanced 2-category of monoidal categories.

Weak vertical composition II: totalities

Abstract:We continue our study of semi-strict tricategories in which the only weakness is in vertical composition. We assemble the doubly-degenerate such tricategories into a 2-category, defining weak functors and transformations. We exhibit a biadjoint biequivalence between this 2-category and the 2-category of braided (weakly) monoidal categories, braided (weakly) monoidal functors, and monoidal transformations.

Abstract:In this monograph we provide an in-depth and systematic study of pseudolimits of pseudofunctors $F:\mathscr{C}^{op} \to \mathfrak{Cat}$ in the $2$-category of categories where $\mathscr{C}$ is a $1$-category and use this to give an explicit and careful study of the category theory used in representation theory, equivariant algebraic geometry, and equivariant algebraic topology and give a unifying language to study equivariant sheaves, equivariant perverse sheaves, and their equivariant derived categories. We show how to use the pseudocone construction $\mathsf{Bicat}(\mathscr{C}^{op},\mathfrak{Cat})(\operatorname{cnst}(1),F)$ in order to derive categorical and homological properties of the pseudolimit of $F$. We explicitly show when the pseudolimit of $F$ is complete, cocomplete, enriched in models of a Lawvere theory, (braided) monoidal, regular, triangulated, admits $t$-structures, and more. We use these various structural results to give a new category-theoretic proof and construction of the equivariant standard and pervese $t$-structures and equivariant six functor formalism for the equivariant derived category $D_G^b(X)$ in both the geometric and topological cases as well as for $D_G^b(X;\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell})$ in the geometric case. We also show in what sense precise sense we can view the equivariant derived category in terms of localizations. After restricting to the case of group resolution categories, we show the existence of a natural isomorphism $\Theta:\alpha_X^{\ast} \Rightarrow \pi_2^{\ast}$ which satisfies a pseudofunctorial version of the cocycle condition $d_1^{\ast}\Theta = d_2^{\ast}\Theta \circ d_0^{\ast}\Theta$. We also use the pseudocone formalism to give an in-depth analysis of change of groups functors. We use the pseudocone formalism and $\Theta$ to develop a notion of equivariant trace with an eye towards the representation theory of $p$-adic groups.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain several model structures on {\bf DblCat}, the category of small double categories. Our model structures have three sources. We first transfer across a categorification-nerve adjunction. Secondly, we view double categories as internal categories in {\bf Cat} and take as our weak equivalences various internal equivalences defined via Grothendieck topologies. Thirdly, {\bf DblCat} inherits a model structure as a category of algebras over a 2-monad. Some of these model structures coincide and the different points of view give us further results about cofibrant replacements and cofibrant objects. As part of this program we give explicit descriptions and discuss properties of free double categories, quotient double categories, colimits of double categories, several nerves, and horizontal categorification.

Abstract:A general method for lifting weak factorization systems in a category S to model category structures on simplicial objects in S is described, analogously to the lifting of cotorsion pairs in Abelian categories to model category structures on chain complexes. This generalizes Quillen's original treatment of (projective) model category structures on simplicial objects. As a new application we show that there is always a model category structure on simplicial objects in the coproduct completion of any (even large) category S with finite limits, which - if S is small - defines the same homotopy theory as any global model category of simplicial pre-sheaves on S. If S is, in addition, extensive, a similar model category structure exists on simplicial objects in S itself. In any case the associated left derivator exists on all diagrams despite the lack of colimits in the original category.

A semi-strictly generated closed structure on Gray-Cat

Abstract:We show that the semi-strictly generated internal homs of $\mathbf{Gray}$-categories $[\mathfrak{A}, \mathfrak{B}]_\text{ssg}$ defined in \cite{Miranda strictifying operational coherences} underlie a closed structure on the category $\mathbf{Gray}$-$\mathbf{Cat}$ of $\mathbf{Gray}$-categories and $\mathbf{Gray}$-functors. The morphisms of $[\mathfrak{A}, \mathfrak{B}]_\text{ssg}$ are composites of those trinatural transformations which satisfy the unit and composition conditions for pseudonatural transformations on the nose rather than up to an invertible $3$-cell. Such trinatural transformations leverage three-dimensional strictification \cite{Miranda strictifying operational coherences} while overcoming the challenges posed by failure of middle four interchange to hold in $\mathbf{Gray}$-categories \cite{Bourke Gurski Cocategorical Obstructions to a Tensor Product of Gray Categories}. As a result we obtain a closed structure that is only partially monoidal with respect to \cite{crans tensor of gray categories}. As a corollary we obtain a slight strengthening of strictification results for braided monoidal bicategories \cite{Gurski Loop Spaces}, which will be improved further in a forthcoming paper \cite{Miranda weak interchange 4-categories}.

Higher categories of push-pull spans, I: Construction and applications

Abstract:This is the first part of a project aimed at formalizing Rozansky-Witten models in the functorial field theory framework. Motivated by work of Calaque-Haugseng-Scheimbauer, we construct a family of symmetric monoidal $(\infty,3)$-categories parametrized by an $\infty$-category with finite limits and a functor into symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories, such that the functor admits pushforwards. This $(\infty,3)$-category contains correspondences in the base $\infty$-category equipped with local systems, which compose via a push-pull formula. We apply this general construction to provide an approximation to the $3$-category of Rozansky-Witten models whose existence was conjectured by Kapustin-Rozansky-Saulina; this approximation behaves like a "commutative" version of the conjectured $3$-category and is related to work of Stefanich on higher quasicoherent sheaves.

Globular weak $ω$-categories as models of a type theory

Abstract:We study the dependent type theory CaTT, introduced by Finster and Mimram, which presents the theory of weak $\omega$-categories, following the idea that type theories can be considered as presentations of generalized algebraic theories. Our main contribution is a formal proof that the models of this type theory correspond precisely to weak $\omega$-categories, as defined by Maltsiniotis, by generalizing a definition proposed by Grothendieck for weak $\omega$-groupoids: Those are defined as suitable presheaves over a cat-coherator, which is a category encoding structure expected to be found in an $\omega$-category. This comparison is established by proving the initiality conjecture for the type theory CaTT, in a way which suggests the possible generalization to a nerve theorem for a certain class of dependent type theories

Abstract:We define and study the $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ of $(\infty,1)$-categories internal to a general $(\infty,1)$-category $\mathcal{C}$ via an associated externalization construction. In the first part, we show various formal closure properties of $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ regarding limits, tensors, cotensors and internal mapping objects under the assumption of various suitable closure properties of $\mathcal{C}$. In particular, we show that $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ defines a cartesian closed full sub-$\infty$-cosmos of the $\infty$-cosmos $\mathbf{Fun}(\mathcal{C}^{op},\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty})$ of $\mathcal{C}$-indexed $(\infty,1)$-categories under suitable assumptions on $\mathcal{C}$. We furthermore characterize the objects of $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ by means of a Yoneda lemma that expresses indexed diagrams of internal shape over $\mathcal{C}$ in terms of an $(\infty,1)$-categorical totalization. In the second part, we relate the general theory developed to this point to results in the model categorical literature. We show that every model category $\mathbb{M}$ gives rise to a ''hands-on'' $\infty$-cosmos $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathbb{M})$ (of not-necessarily cofibrant objects) directly by restriction of the Reedy model structure on $\mathbb{M}^{\Delta^{op}}$. We then define an according right derived model categorical externalization functor, and use it to show that the $(\infty,1)$-categorical and the model categorical constructions correspond to one another whenever $\mathcal{C}$ is presentable and $\mathbb{M}$ is a suitable presentation thereof.

Abstract:In this article, we study the properties of motivic homotopy category $\mathcal{SH}_{\operatorname{ext}}(\mathcal{X})$ developed by Chowdhury and Khan-Ravi for $\mathcal{X}$ a Nis-loc Stack. In particular, we compare the above construction with Voevodsky's original construction using NisLoc topology. Using the techniques developed by Liu-Zheng and Mann's notion of $\infty$-category of correspondences and abstract six-functor formalisms, we also extend the exceptional functors and extend properties like projection formula, base change and purity to the non-representable situation.

Abstract:In this paper, we study double $\infty$-categories of double functors. To this end, we exhibit the cartesian closed structure of the $\infty$-category of double $\infty$-categories and various localizations. We prove a theorem that characterizes the companions and conjoints in functor double $\infty$-categories via the notion of companionable and conjointable 2-cells in double $\infty$-categories. Moreover, we show that under suitable conditions, functor double $\infty$-categories are horizontally closed. Throughout the paper, we highlight a few applications to $(\infty,2)$-category theory and indexed exponentiability.

We relate them to topoi and (lex) geometric sketches, which serve as categorical specifications of geometric theories. We provide reconstruction and completeness‐like results. We relate abstract elementary classes to locally decidable topoi. We introduce the notion of categories of saturated objects and relate it to atomic topoi.

6-Functor Formalisms and Smooth Representations

Abstract:The purpose of this article is threefold: Firstly, we propose some enhancements to the existing definition of 6-functor formalisms. Secondly, we systematically study the category of kernels, which is a certain 2-category attached to every 6-functor formalism. It provides powerful new insights into the internal structure of the 6-functor formalism and allows to abstractly define important finiteness conditions, recovering well-known examples from the literature. Finally, we apply our methods to the theory of smooth representations of $p$-adic Lie groups and, as an application, construct a canonical anti-involution on derived Hecke algebras generalizing results of Schneider--Sorensen. In an appendix we provide the necessary background on $\infty$-categories, higher algebra, enriched $\infty$-categories and $(\infty,2)$-categories. Among others we prove several new results on adjunctions in an $(\infty,2)$-category and in particular show that passing to the adjoint morphism is a functorial operation.

Schur Functors and Categorified Plethysm

Abstract:It is known that the Grothendieck group of the category of Schur functors is the ring of symmetric functions. This ring has a rich structure, much of which is encapsulated in the fact that it is a "plethory": a monoid in the category of birings with its substitution monoidal structure. We show that similarly the category of Schur functors is a "2-plethory", which descends to give the plethory structure on symmetric functions. Thus, much of the structure of symmetric functions exists at a higher level in the category of Schur functors.
