Abstract:In this last decade, our knowledge of evolutionary and structural properties of stars of different mass and chemical composition has significantly improved. This notwithstanding, updated stellar models are still affected by significant and, usually, not negligible uncertainties. These uncertainties are related to our poor knowledge of some physical processes occurring in the real stars such as the efficiency of mixing processes. These drawbacks of stellar models have to be properly taken into account when comparing theory with observations. In this paper we briefly review current uncertainties affecting low-mass stellar models, i.e. those structures with mass in the range between 0.6 Msun and ~1.4 Msun, during the Red Giant Branch stage.

Abstract:The literature is rich in analysis and results related to thermally pulsing-asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars, but the problem of the instabilities that arise and cause the divergence of models during the late stages of their evolution is rarely addressed. We investigate the physical conditions, causes and consequences of the interruption in the calculations of massive AGB stars in the late thermally-pulsing AGB phase. We have thoroughly analysed the physical structure of a solar metallicity 8.5 solar mass star and described the physical conditions at the base of the convective envelope (BCE) just prior to divergence. We find that the local opacity maximum caused by M-shell electrons of Fe-group elements lead to the accumulation of an energy excess, to the departure of thermal equilibrium conditions at the base of the convective envelope and, eventually, to the divergence of the computed models. For the 8.5 solar mass case we present in this work the divergence occurs when the envelope mass is about 2 solar mass. The remaining envelope masses range between somewhat less than 1 and more than 2 solar mass for stars with initial masses between 7 and 10 solar mass and, therefore, our results are relevant for the evolution and yields of super-AGB stars. If the envelope is ejected as a consequence of the instability we are considering, the occurrence of electron-capture supernovae would be avoided at solar metallicity.

Quantifying the uncertainties of chemical evolution studies. II. Stellar yields

Abstract:This is the second paper of a series which aims at quantifying the uncertainties in chemical evolution model predictions related to the underlying model assumptions. Specifically, it deals with the uncertainties due to the choice of the stellar yields. We adopt a widely used model for the chemical evolution of the Galaxy and test the effects of changing the stellar nucleosynthesis prescriptions on the predicted evolution of several chemical species. We find that, except for a handful of elements whose nucleosynthesis in stars is well understood by now, large uncertainties still affect the model predictions. This is especially true for the majority of the iron-peak elements, but also for much more abundant species such as carbon and nitrogen. The main causes of the mismatch we find among the outputs of different models assuming different stellar yields and among model predictions and observations are: (i) the adopted location of the mass cut in models of type II supernova explosions; (ii) the adopted strength and extent of hot bottom burning in models of asymptotic giant branch stars; (iii) the neglection of the effects of rotation on the chemical composition of the stellar surfaces; (iv) the adopted rates of mass loss and of (v) nuclear reactions, and (vi) the different treatments of convection. Our results suggest that it is mandatory to include processes such as hot bottom burning in intermediate-mass stars and rotation in stars of all masses in accurate studies of stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis. In spite of their importance, both these processes still have to be better understood and characterized. As for massive stars, presupernova models computed with mass loss and rotation are available in the literature, but they still wait for a self-consistent coupling with the results of explosive nucleosynthesis computations.

Abstract:Almost all stars in the 1-8 Msun range evolve through the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB), preplanetary nebula (PPN) and planetary nebula (PN) evolutionary phases. Most stars that leave the main sequence in a Hubble time will end their lives in this way. The heavy mass loss which occurs during the AGB phase is important across astrophysics, and the particulate matter crucial for the birth of new solar systems is made and ejected by AGB stars. Yet stellar evolution from the beginning of the AGB phase to the PN phase remains poorly understood. We do not understand how the mass-loss (rate, geometry, temporal history) depends on fundamental stellar parameters or the presence of a binary companion. While the study of evolved non-massive stars has maintained a relatively modest profile in recent decades, we are nonetheless in the midst of a quiet but exciting revolution in this area, driven by new observational results, such as the discovery of jets and disks in stellar environments where these were never expected, and by the recognition of new symmetries such as multipolarity and point-symmetry occuring frequently in the nebulae resulting from the outflows. In this paper we summarise the major unsolved problems in this field, and specify the areas where allocation of effort and resources is most likely to help make significant progress.

Super and massive AGB stars - III. Nucleosynthesis in metal-poor and very metal-poor stars - Z=0.001 and 0.0001

Abstract:We present a new grid of stellar models and nucleosynthetic yields for super-AGB stars with metallicities Z=0.001 and 0.0001, applicable for use within galactic chemical evolution models. Contrary to more metal rich stars where hot bottom burning is the main driver of the surface composition, in these lower metallicity models the effect of third dredge-up and corrosive second dredge-up also have a strong impact on the yields. These metal-poor and very metal-poor super-AGB stars create large amounts of He4, C13 and N14, as well as the heavy magnesium isotopes Mg25 and Mg26. There is a transition in yield trends at metallicity Z approximately 0.001, below which we find positive yields of C12, O16, N15, Al27 and Si28, which is not the case for higher metallicities. We explore the large uncertainties derived from wind prescriptions in super-AGB stars, finding approximately 2 orders of magnitude difference in yields of Ne22, Na23, Mg24,25,26, Al27 and our s-process proxy isotope g. We find inclusion of variable composition low temperature molecular opacities is only critical for super-AGB stars of metallicities below Z approximately 0.001. We analyze our results, and those in the literature, to address the question: Are super-AGB stars the polluters responsible for extreme population in the globular cluster NGC 2808? Our results, as well as those from previous studies, seem unable to satisfactorily match the extreme population in this globular cluster.

Nucleosynthesis in massive AGB stars with delayed superwinds: implications for the abundance anomalies in Globular Clusters

Abstract:We present nucleosynthesis predictions for massive (5-7 solar masses) asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars of solar metallicity where we delay the onset of the superwind to pulsation periods of P =700-800 days. We found that delaying the superwind in solar metallicity massive AGB stars results in a larger production of s-process elements, something that would be also expected at lower metallicities. These new models and the available observations show that massive C-O core AGB stars in our Galaxy and in the Magellanic Clouds experience considerable third dredge-up (TDU). Thus, if massive AGB stars at the metallicities of the Globular Clusters (GCs) also experience deep TDU, then these stars would not be good candidates to explain the abundance anomalies observed in most GCs. However, more massive AGB stars (e.g., near the limit of C-O core production) or super-AGB stars with O-Ne cores may not experience very efficient TDU, producing the high He abundances needed to explain the multiple populations observed in some GCs.

Abstract:The simulation of heavy element nucleosynthesis requires input from yet-to-be-measured nuclear properties. The uncertainty in the values of these off-stability nuclear properties propagates to uncertainties in the predictions of elemental and isotopic abundances. However, for any given astrophysical explosion, there are many different trajectories, i.e. temperature and density histories, experienced by outflowing material and thus different nuclear properties can come into play. We consider combined nucleosynthesis results from 460,000 trajectories from a neutron star-black hole accretion disk and the find spread in elemental predictions due solely to unknown nuclear properties to be a factor of a few. We analyze this relative spread in model predictions due to nuclear variations and conclude that the uncertainties can be attributed to a combination of properties in a given region of the abundance pattern. We calculate a cross-correlation between mass changes and abundance changes to show how variations among the properties of participating nuclei may be explored. Our results provide further impetus for measurements of multiple quantities on individual short-lived neutron-rich isotopes at modern experimental facilities.

Abstract:Calculations from stellar evolutionary models of low- and intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars provide predictions of elemental abundances and yields for comparison to observations. However, there are many uncertainties that reduce the accuracy of these predictions. One such uncertainty involves the treatment of low-temperature molecular opacities that account for the surface abundance variations of C, N and O. A number of prior calculations of intermediate-mass AGB stellar models that incorporate both efficient third dredge-up and hot bottom burning include a molecular opacity treatment which does not consider the depletion of C and O due to hot bottom burning. Here we update the molecular opacity treatment and investigate the effect of this improvement on calculations of intermediate-mass AGB stellar models. We perform tests on two masses, 5 and 6 M⊙, and two metallicities, Z = 0.001 and 0.02, to quantify the variations between two opacity treatments. We find that several evolutionary properties (e.g. radius, Teff and Tbce) are dependent on the opacity treatment. Larger structural differences occur for the Z = 0.001 models compared to the Z = 0.02 models indicating that the opacity treatment has a more significant effect at lower metallicity. As a consequence of the structural changes, the predictions of isotopic yields are slightly affected with most isotopes experiencing changes up to 60 per cent for the Z = 0.001 models and 20 per cent for the Z = 0.02 models. Despite this moderate effect, we conclude that it is more fitting to use variable molecular opacities for models undergoing hot bottom burning.

Observational studies of mass loss from AGB stars

Abstract:It is important to properly describe the mass-loss rate of AGB stars, in order to understand their evolution from the AGB to PN phase. The primary goal of this study is to investigate the influence of metallicity on the mass-loss rate, under well determined luminosities. The luminosity of the star is a crucial parameter for the radiative driven stellar wind. Many efforts have been invested to constrain the AGB mass-loss rate, but most of the previous studies use Galactic objects, which have poorly known distances, thus their luminosities. To overcome this problem, we have studied mass loss from AGB stars in the Galaxies of the Local Group. The distance to the stars have been independently measured, thus AGB stars in these galaxies are ideal for understanding the mass-loss rate. Moreover, these galaxies have a lower metallicity than the Milky Way, providing an ideal target to study the influence of metallicity on the mass-loss rate. We report our analysis of mass loss, using the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Herschel Space Observatory. We will discuss the influence of AGB mass-loss on stellar evolution, and explore AGB and PN contribution to the lifecycle of matter in galaxies.

Abstract:Many nucleosynthesis and mixing processes of low-mass stars as they evolve from the Main Sequence to the thermal-pulse Asymptotic Giant Branch phase (TP-AGB) are well understood (although of course important physics components, e.g. rotation, magnetic fields, gravity wave mixing, remain poorly known). Nevertheless, in the last years presolar grain measurements with high resolution have presented new puzzling problems and strong constraints on nucleosynthesis processes in stars. The goal of the NuGrid collaboration is to present uniform yields for a large range of masses and metallicities, including low$-$mass stars and massive stars and their explosions. Here we present the first calculations of stellar evolution and high-resolution, post-processing simulations of an AGB star with an initial mass of 2 M_sun and solar-like metallicity (Z=0.01), based on the post-processing code PPN. In particular, we analyze the formation and evolution of the radiative 13C-pocket between the 17th TP and the 18th TP. The s-process nucleosynthesis profile of a sample of heavy isotopes is also discussed, before the next convective TP occurrence.

A study of carbon-rich post-AGB stars in the Milky Way to understand the production of carbonaceous dust from evolved stars

Abstract:Context. Knowledge of the Gaia , DR3 parallaxes of Galactic post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars makes it possible to exploit these objects as tracers of AGB evolution, nucleosynthesis, and dust production as well as to use them to shed new light on still poorly known physical processes experienced by AGB stars. Aims. The goal of this study is to reconstruct the evolution and the dust formation processes during the final AGB phases of a sample of carbon-rich, post-AGB Galactic stars, with particular attention to the determination of the past mass-loss history. Methods. We study the IR excess of Galactic sources classified as post-AGB single stars by means of dust formation modelling where dust grains form and grow in a static wind and expand from the surface of the star. The method is applied to various evolutionary stages of the final AGB phase of stars with different masses and metallicities. The results from a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting are used to infer information on mass loss, efficiency of dust formation, and wind dynamics. Results. The detailed analysis of the SED of the sources investigated, which included the derivation of the luminosities and the dust properties, allows us to confirm previous results, mostly based on the surface chemical composition, that most of the investigated sources descend from low-mass ( M < 1.5 M ⊙ ) progenitors that reached the C-star stage. Metal-poor carbon stars are characterised by higher IR excesses with respect to their more metal-rich counterparts of similar luminosity due to a higher surface carbon-to-oxygen excess. This work confirms previous conclusions based on a limited sample of carbon-rich post-AGB objects in the Magellanic Clouds, namely that more luminous stars descending from higher-mass progenitors are generally more opaque due to shorter evolutionary timescales that place the dust shell closer to the central object. Through the study of the dynamics of the outflow and results from stellar evolution modelling, we find that the mass-loss rate at the tip of the AGB phase of metal-rich low-mass carbon stars is approximately 1#x2212;1.5 × 10 −5 M ⊙ yr −1 , whereas in the metal-poor domain Ṁ ∼ 4 − 5 × 10 −5 M ⊙ yr −1 is required. These results indicate the need for an upwards revision of the theoretical mass-loss rates of low-mass carbon stars in the available literature, which in turn require a revised determination of carbon dust yields by AGB stars.

Quantification of nuclear uncertainties in nucleosynthesis of elements beyond Iron

Abstract:Nucleosynthesis beyond Fe poses additional challenges not encountered when studying astrophysical processes involving light nuclei. Generally higher temperatures and nuclear level densities lead to stronger contributions of transitions on excited target states. This may prevent cross section measurements to determine stellar reaction rates and theory contributions remain important. Furthermore, measurements often are not feasible in the astrophysically relevant energy range. Sensitivity analysis allows not only to determine the contributing nuclear properties but also is a handy tool for experimentalists to interpret the impact of their data on predicted cross sections and rates. It can also speed up future input variation studies of nucleosynthesis by simplifying an intermediate step in the full calculation sequence. Large-scale predictions of sensitivities and ground-state contributions to the stellar rates are presented, allowing an estimate of how well rates can be directly constrained by experiment. The reactions 185W(n,gamma) and 186W(gamma,n) are discussed as application examples. Studies of uncertainties in abundances predicted in nucleosynthesis simulations rely on the knowledge of reaction rate errors. An improved treatment of uncertainty analysis is presented as well as a recipe for combining experimental data and theory to arrive at a new reaction rate and its uncertainty. As an example, it is applied to neutron capture rates for the s-process, leading to larger uncertainties than previously assumed.

Abstract:Thermally-Pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch (TP-AGB) stars are relatively short lived (less than a few Myr), yet their cool effective temperatures, high luminosities, efficient mass-loss and dust production can dramatically effect the chemical enrichment histories and the spectral energy distributions of their host galaxies. The ability to accurately model TP-AGB stars is critical to the interpretation of the integrated light of distant galaxies, especially in redder wavelengths. We continue previous efforts to constrain the evolution and lifetimes of TP-AGB stars by modeling their underlying stellar populations. Using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical and near-infrared photometry taken of 12 fields of 10 nearby galaxies imaged via the ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury and the near-infrared HST/SNAP follow-up campaign, we compare the model and observed TP-AGB luminosity functions as well as the number ratio of TP-AGB to red giant branch stars. We confirm the best-fitting mass-loss prescription, introduced by Rosenfield et al. 2014, in which two different wind regimes are active during the TP-AGB, significantly improves models of many galaxies that show evidence of recent star formation. This study extends previous efforts to constrain TP-AGB lifetimes to metallicities ranging -1.59 < [Fe/H] < -0.56 and initial TP-AGB masses up to ~ 4 Msun, which include TP-AGB stars that undergo hot-bottom burning.

Abstract:We compute the mass and composition of dust produced by stars with masses in the range 1Msun<M<8 Msun and with a metallicity of Z=0.001 during their AGB and Super AGB phases. Stellar evolution is followed from the pre-main sequence phase using the code ATON which provides, at each timestep, the thermodynamics and the chemical stucture of the wind. We use a simple model to describe the growth of the dust grains under the hypothesis of a time-independent, spherically symmetric stellar wind. We find that the total mass of dust injected by AGB stars in the interstellar medium does not increase monotonically with stellar mass and ranges between a minimum of 10^{-6}Msun for the 1.5Msun stellar model, up to 2x10^{-4} Msun, for the 6Msun case. Dust composition depends on the stellar mass: low-mass stars (M < 3Msun) produce carbon-rich dust, whereas more massive stars, experiencing Hot Bottom Burning, never reach the carbon-star stage, and produce silicates and iron. This is in partial disagreement with previous investigations in the literature, which are based on synthetic AGB models and predict that, when the initial metallicity is Z=0.001, C-rich dust is formed at all stellar masses. The differences are due to the different modelling of turbulent convection in the super-adiabaticity regime. Also in this case the treatment of super-adiabatic convection shows up as the most relevant issue affecting the dust-formation process. We also investigate Super AGB stars with masses 6.5Msun<M<8 Msun that evolve over a ONe core.Due to a favourable combination of mass loss and Hot Bottom Burning, these stars are predicted to be the most efficient silicate-dust producers, releasing [2 - 7]x 10^{-4} Msun masses of dust. We discuss the robustness of these predictions and their relevance for the nature and evolution of dust at early cosmic times.
AGB evolution with overshoot: hot bottom burning and dredge up

Abstract:We calculated models of massive AGB stars with a self-consistent coupling of time-dependent mixing and nuclear burning for 30 isotopes and 74 reactions. Overshoot with an exponentially declining velocity field was considered and applied during all stages of evolution and in all convective regions. Very efficient 3rd dredge-up was found even overcompensating the growth of the hydrogen-exhausted core after a few thermal pulses. Hot bottom burning occurs for M>4Msol within the sequences with overshoot. Carbon star formation in these more massive AGB stars is delayed or even prevented by hot bottom burning despite the very efficient dredge-up. With the simultaneous treatment of mixing and burning the formation of Li-rich AGB stars due to the Cameron-Fowler mechanism was followed. For a 6Msol model the maximum Li abundance was found to be epsilon(Li7)=4.4.

Abstract:Within the framework of the current models for the slow neutron capture (s) process in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars we explore the uncertainties introduced by the assumptions made on stellar modeling. On the basis of star models constructed with three different evolutionary codes we generate detailed neutron-capture nucleosynthesis post-processing models. The main difference among the codes is that one of them includes an overshooting mechanism. As a result, the neutron fluxes are stronger both during the interpulse periods and within thermal pulses. The efficiency of the C13 source is also studied and we find that a linear relationship exists between the initial C12 in the intershell and the maximum number of neutrons produced.

Abstract:According to a standard initial mass function, stars in the range 7-12 Msun constitute ~50% (by number) of the stars more massive than ~7 Msun, but, in spite of this, their evolutionary properties, and in particular their final fate, are still scarcely studied. In this paper we present a detailed study of the evolutionary properties of solar metallicity, non rotating stars in the range 7-15 Msun, from the pre main sequence phase up to the presupernova stage or up to an advanced stage of the thermally pulsing phase, depending on the initial mass. We find that (1) the 7.00 Msun develops a degenerate CO core and evolves as a classical AGB star in the sense that it does not ignite the C burning reactions; (2) stars with the initial mass M >= 9.22 Msun end their life as core collapse supernovae; (3) stars in the range 7.50 <= M/Msun <= 9.20 develop a degenerate ONeMg core and evolve through the thermally pulsing SAGB phase; 4) stars in the mass range 7.50 <= M/Msun <= 8.00 end their life as hybrid CO/ONeMg- or ONeMg- WD; (5) stars with the initial mass in the range 8.50 <= M/Msun <= 9.20 may potentially explode as electron capture supernovae.

Abstract:This is a starting point of future work on a more detailed study of early evolutionary phases of galactic nuclei. We put into port the study of the evolution of star accretion onto a supermassive gaseous object in the central region of an active galactic nucleus, which was previously addressed semi-analytically. For this purpose, we use a gaseous model of relaxing dense stellar systems, whose equations are solved numerically. The model is shortly described and some first model calculations for the specific case of black hole mass growth in time are given. Similar concepts will be applied in future work for a system in which there is a dense interstellar medium as a possible progenitor of a black hole in the galactic centre.

Abstract:Intense mass loss through cool, low-velocity winds is a defining characteristic of low-to-intermediate mass stars during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) evolutionary stage. Such winds return up ~80% of the initial stellar mass to the interstellar medium and play a major role in enriching it with dust and heavy elements. A challenge to understanding the physics underlying AGB mass loss is its dependence on an interplay between complex and highly dynamic processes, including pulsations, convective flows, shocks, magnetic fields, and opacity changes resulting from dust and molecule formation. I highlight some examples of recent advances in our understanding of late-stage stellar mass loss that are emerging from radio and (sub)millimeter observations, with a particular focus on those that resolve the surfaces and extended atmospheres of evolved stars in space, time, and frequency.
