Abstract:We revisit McLean's second variation formulas for calibrated submanifolds in exceptional geometries, and correct his formulas concerning associative submanifolds and Cayley submanifolds, using a unified treatment based on the (relative) calibration method and Harvey-Lawson's identities.

Abstract:The first and second variation formulas of the energy functional for a nondegenerate map between Finsler manifolds is derived. As an application, some nonexistence theorems of nonconstant stable harmonic maps from a Finsler manifold to a Riemannian manifold are given.

Abstract:0. In this short note, we derive some nonabelian localization formulas in a very simple way. The method is to use Witten’s idea of multiplying the integral by a Gaussian and then to complete square. The localization procedure we use is different from Witten’s in that we do not need the Bismut localizing factor e−tDλ as in [W], at the same time we avoid the use of Fourier transform in [JK]. Along the way we will also derive Martin’s formula which relates nonabelian symplectic reduction to the abelian case. The method is rather elementary and applicable to other situations which we hope to discuss on a later occasion. We remark that all of the basic results in this note, which grows out of my trying to understand this circle of ideas, are due to Jeffrey-Kirwan, Martin and Witten. Our sole contribution is pointing out a different way to derive them. Other quite different approaches to such type results have also been obtained by Guillemin-Kalkman [GK], Martin [M] and Vergne [V]. The interested reader may compare these different methods and formulas. I would like to thank A. Astashkevich, S. Martin especially S. Abstract:In this note we derive some consequences from the Mari\~no-Vafa formula and the cut-and-join equation, these include unified simple proofs of the $\lambda_g$ conjecture and some other Hodge integral identities. We also describe a proof of the ELSV formula relating Hurwitz numbers and Hodge integrals by using the cut-and-join equation, following our proof of the Mari\~no-Vafa formula.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish an L-2-type Dolbeault isomorphism for logarithmic differential forms by Hrmander's L-2 estimates. By using this isomorphism and the construction of smooth Hermitian metrics, we obtain a number of new vanishing theorems for sheaves of logarithmic differential forms on compact Kahler manifolds with simple normal crossing divisors, which generalize several classical vanishing theorems, including Norimatsu's vanishing theorem, Girbau's vanishing theorem, Le Potier's vanishing theorem, and a version of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem.

Abstract:We derive some Hodge integral identities by taking various limits of the Mariño-Vafa formula using the cut-and-join equation. These identities include the formula of generalλg\lambda _g-integrals, the formula ofλg−1\lambda _{g-1}-integrals onM¯g,1{\overline {\mathcal {M}}}_{g,1}, the formula of cubicλ\lambdaintegrals onM¯g{\overline {\mathcal {M}}}_g, and the ELSV formula relating Hurwitz numbers and Hodge integrals. In particular, our proof of the MV formula by the cut-and-join equation leads to a new and simple proof of theλg\lambda _gconjecture. We also present a proof of the ELSV formula completely parallel to our proof of the Mariño-Vafa formula.
Quantum Correction and the Moduli Spaces of Calabi-Yau Manifolds

Abstract: We define the quantum correction of the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Under the assumption of no weak quantum correction, we prove that the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ is a locally symmetric space with the Weil-Petersson metric. For Calabi-Yau threefolds, we show that no strong quantum correction is equivalent to that, with the Hodge metric, the image $ \Phi(\mathcal{T})$ of the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ under the period map $\Phi$ is an open submanifold of a globally Hermitian symmetric space $W$ of the same dimension as $\mathcal{T}$. Finally, for Hyperk\"ahler manifold of dimension $2n \geq 4$, we find both locally and globally defined families of $(2,0)$ and $(2n,0)$-classes over the Teichm\"uller space of polarized Hyperk\"ahler manifolds.

Abstract:Given a calibration whose stabilizer acts transitively on the Grassmanian of calibrated planes, we introduce a nontrivial Lie-theoretic condition on , which we call compliancy , and show that this condition holds for many interesting geometric calibrations, including Kähler, special Lagrangian, associative, coassociative, and Cayley. We determine a sufficient condition that ensures compliancy of , we completely characterize compliancy in terms of properties of a natural involution determined by a calibrated plane, and we relate compliancy to the geometry of the calibrated Grassmanian. The condition that a Riemannian immersion be calibrated is a first order condition. By contrast, its extrinsic geometry, given by the second fundamental form A and the induced tangent and normal connections on TL and D on NL , respectively, is second order information. We characterize the conditions imposed on the extrinsic geometric data when the Riemannian immersion is calibrated with respect to a calibration on M which is both parallel and compliant . This motivate the definition of an infinitesimally calibrated Riemannian immersion, generalizing the classical notion of a superminimal surface in .

Abstract:In this note, we compute the second variational formula for the functional∫_M v^(6)(g)dv_g, which was introduced by Graham-Juhl and the firstvariational formula was obtained by Chang-Fang. We also prove that Einsteinmanifolds (with dimension ≥ 7) with positive scalar curvature is a strictlocal maximum within its conformal class, unless the manifold is isometric toround sphere with the standard metric up to a multiple of constant. Note thatwhen (M,g) is locally conformally flat, this functional reduces to thewell-studied ∫_M σ_3(g)dv_g. Hence, our result generalize a previousresult of Jeff Viaclovsky without the locally conformally flat restraint.

Abstract:In [17] the third author presented Moebius geometry for sub-manifolds in Sn and calculated the first variational formula of the Willmore functional by using Moebius invariants. In this paper we present the second variational formula for Willmore submanifolds. As an application of these variational formulas we give the standard examples of Willmore hypersurfaces $ \lbrace W_{k}^{m}:= S^{k}(\sqrt {(m-k)/m}) \times S^{m-k}(\sqrt {k/m}), 1 \leq k \leq m-1 \rbrace $ in Sm+1 (which can be obtained by exchanging radii in the Clifford tori $ S^{k}(\sqrt {k/m}) \times S^{m-k}(\sqrt {(m-k)/m)})$ and show that they are stable Willmore hypersurfaces. In case of surfaces in S3, the stability of the Clifford torus $ S^{1}{({1\over \sqrt {2}})}\times S^{1}{({1\over \sqrt {2}})} $ was proved by J. L. Weiner in [18]. We give also some examples of m-dimensional Willmore submanifolds in an n-dimensional unit sphere Sn.

Abstract:We prove new variation formulae for the volume of coassociative submanifolds, expressed in terms of data. These formulae highlight the role of the ambient torsion and Ricci curvature. As a special case, we obtain a second variation formula for variations within the moduli space of coassociative submanifolds. These results apply, for example, to coassociative fibrations. We illustrate our formulae with several examples, both homogeneous and non.

Volume forms on balanced manifolds and the Calabi-Yau equation

Abstract:We introduce the space of mixed-volume forms endowed with an $L^2$ metric on a balanced manifold. A geodesic equation can be derived in this space that has an interesting structure and extends the equation of Donaldson \cite{Donaldson10} and Chen-He \cite{CH11} in the space of volume forms on a Riemannian manifold. This nonlinear PDE is studied in detail and the existence of weak solution is shown for the Dirichlet problem, under a positivity assumption. Later we study the Calabi-Yau equation for balanced metrics and introduce a geometric criteria for prescribing volume forms that is closely related to the positivity assumption above. We call this assumption the sub-Astheno-Kähler condition. By deriving $C^0$ a priori estimates, we show that the existence of solutions can be established on all sub-Astheno-Kähler manifolds.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to extend our previous work on the variational formula for the Bismut-Cheeger eta form without the kernel bundle assumption by allowing the spin$^c$ Dirac operators to be twisted by isomorphic vector bundles, and to establish the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded additivity of the Bismut-Cheeger eta form. Using these results, we give alternative proofs of the fact that the analytic index in differential $K$-theory is a well defined group homomorphism, and the Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck theorem in $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ $K$-theory.

Liouville's theorem in calibrated geometries

Abstract:We consider the following extension of the classical Liouville theorem: A calibration $\omega \in \Lambda^n \mathbb{R}^m$, where $3 \le n \le m$, has the Liouville property if a Sobolev mapping $F\colon \Omega \to \mathbb{R}^m$, where $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a domain, in $W^{1,n}_{loc}( \Omega, \mathbb{R}^m )$ satisfying $\|DF\|^n = \star F^{*}\omega$ almost everywhere is a restriction of a Möbius transformation $\mathbb{S}^m \to \mathbb{S}^m$. We show that, for $m\ge 5$, every calibration in $\Lambda^{m-2} \mathbb{R}^m$ has the Liouville property and, in low dimensions, a calibration $\omega \in \Lambda^n \mathbb{R}^m$ has the Liouville property for $3 \le n \le m \le 6$ unless $\omega$ is face equivalent to the Special Lagrangian. In these cases, the Liouville property stems from isoperimetric rigidity of these mappings together with a classification of calibrations whose conformally flat calibrated submanifolds are flat. We also show that, for $3 \leq n \leq m$, the calibrations with the Liouville property form a dense $G_\delta$ set in the space of calibrations. As an application, we consider factorization of more general quasiregular curves and stability of quasiregular curves of small distortion.
