Abstract:We develop a continuum theory for equilibrium elasticity of a network of crosslinked semiflexible filaments, spanning the full range between flexible entropy-driven chains to stiff athermal rods. We choose the 3-chain constitutive model over several plausible candidates, and derive analytical expressions for the elastic energy at arbitrary strain, with the corresponding stress-strain relationship. The theory fits well to a wide range of experimental data on simple shear in different filament networks, quantitatively matching the differential shear modulus variation with stress, with only two adjustable parameters (which represent the filament stiffness and pre-tension in the network, respectively). The general theory accurately describes the crossover between the positive and negative Poynting effect (normal stress on imposed shear) on increasing the stiffness of filaments forming the network.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the nonlinear elasticity of semi - flexible fiber networks. Specifically, the author developed a continuum theory to describe the elastic properties of networks composed of cross - linked semi - flexible fibers in equilibrium. The rigidity of these fibers ranges from completely flexible entropy - driven chains to completely rigid athermal rods. The main objectives of the paper include:
1. **Establish analytical expressions for elastic energy and stress - strain relationships**: By choosing the 3 - chain model as the constitutive model for network elasticity, the author derived the elastic energy under arbitrary strain and its corresponding stress - strain relationship.
2. **Interpret experimental data**: This theory can well fit a wide range of experimental data of different fiber networks under simple shear, quantitatively matching the change of differential shear modulus with stress, with only two adjustable parameters (representing the rigidity of the fiber and the pretension in the network respectively).
3. **Describe the transition between positive and negative Poynting effects**: As the rigidity of the fibers composing the network increases, the theory accurately describes the transition between positive and negative Poynting effects (normal stress when shear is applied).
4. **Discuss network stability**: The author explored the stability of the network (i.e., the critical rigidity point) and the tensegrity phenomenon, showing that the pretension of the fibers when cross - linked into a network determines the magnitude of the linear modulus \( G_0 \).
### Key Formulas
1. **Single - chain free energy**:
\[
F_{\text{chain}} = k_BT \left( \frac{\pi^2 c (1 - x^2)}{1} + \frac{1}{\pi c (1 - x^2)} \right)
\]
where \( c=\frac{l_p}{2L_c} \), \( x = \frac{\xi}{L_c} \), \( l_p \) is the persistence length, \( L_c \) is the contour length, and \( \xi \) is the end - to - end distance.
2. **Free energy density of the 3 - chain model**:
\[
F_{3c} = n k_BT \left[ \frac{\pi^2 c (3 - x^2 I_1)}{3} + \frac{3 - 2 I_1 x^2 + I_2 x^4}{\pi c (1 - I_1 x^2 + I_2 x^4 - I_3 x^6)} \right]
\]
where \( I_1, I_2, I_3 \) are invariants of the Cauchy - Green tensor.
3. **Shear stress expression**:
\[
[\sigma_{xz}]_{3c} = \frac{2}{3} n k_BT \gamma x^2 \left[ \frac{(1 - x^4) c \pi [1 - (2 + \gamma^2) x^2 + x^4]^2 - c \pi^2}{1 - (2 + \gamma^2) x^2 + x^4} \right]
\]
### Summary
By developing a continuum theory, the paper successfully described the nonlinear elastic behavior of semi - flexible fiber networks and was able to explain a variety of experimental phenomena, especially the positive and negative Poynting effects and network stability under simple shear deformation. In addition, this theory also revealed the influence of fiber pretension on the network linear modulus.
