Abstract:The problem of the movement of the drops in a continuous environment represents a fundamental step for the study of two phases flows. Their domains of application are enormous as: the combustion of the rooms of the machines thermal, extraction of a liquid of another liquid, catalyst used to trigger the chemical reactions occurring in access points, sparkling absorption by the drops of water in meteorology. The object of our work is to translate the movement of the immiscibles drops in water by a relation expressing the terminal velocity of the drop according to her equivalent diameter. This relation although theoretical has been validated by the experimental and numeric model.

On the "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system with Navier conditions

Abstract:In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid when some Navier slip conditions are prescribed on the body's boundary. The whole system "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" is assumed to occupy the full space $\R^{3}$. We start by proving the existence of global weak solutions to the Cauchy problem. Then, we exhibit several properties of these solutions. First, we show that the added-mass effect can be computed which yields better-than-expected regularity (in time) of the solid velocity-field. More precisely we prove that the solid translation and rotation velocities are in the Sobolev space $H^1$. Second, we show that the case with the body fixed can be thought as the limit of infinite inertia of this system, that is when the solid density is multiplied by a factor converging to $+\infty$. Finally we prove the convergence in the energy space of weak solutions "à la Leray" to smooth solutions of the system "inviscid incompressible fluid + rigid body" as the viscosity goes to zero, till the lifetime $T$ of the smooth solution of the inviscid system. Moreover we show that the rate of convergence is optimal with respect to the viscosity and that the solid translation and rotation velocities converge in $H^1 (0,T)$.

Abstract:The author shows briefly: The origins and the relations of the idea of the dynamic film to the classic results concerning viscosity. How one can pass from one idea to the other, and in the expressions Δu and Δv make the forces tangent and normal to the elements of films appear in the case of movement parallel to a plane. The introduction and the significance of the curvature φ of rectangular trajectory to the filaments, which comes into the new expressions for Δu and Δv, together with the curvature ψ of the filaments. The condition of rectangularity between filaments and trajectories gives a relation between ψ and φ and their partial derivatives following these curves. Abstract:We consider the motion of a compressible viscous fluid containing a moving rigid body confined to a planar domain $\Omega \subset R^2$. The main result states that the influence of the body on the fluid is negligible if (i) the diameter of the body is small and (ii) the fluid is nearly incompressible (the low Mach number regime). The specific shape of the body as well as the boundary conditions on the fluid--body interface are irrelevant and collisions with the boundary $\partial \Omega$ are allowed. The rigid body motion may be enforced externally or governed solely by its interaction with the fluid.

Abstract:We consider the inertial motion of a system constituted by a rigid body with an interior cavity entirely filled with a viscous incompressible fluid. Navier boundary conditions are imposed on the cavity surface. We prove the existence of weak solutions and determine the critical spaces for the governing evolution equation. Using parabolic regularization in time-weighted spaces, we establish regularity of solutions and their long-time behavior. We show that every weak solution à la Leray-Hopf to the equations of motion converges to an equilibrium at an exponential rate in the $L_q$-topology for every fluid-solid configuration. A nonlinear stability analysis shows that equilibria associated with the largest moment of inertia are asymptotically (exponentially) stable, whereas all other equilibria are normally hyperbolic and unstable in an appropriate topology.

Abstract:This is an adapatation by U. Frisch of an English translation by Thomas E. Burton of Euler's memoir `Principes généraux du mouvement des fluides' (Euler, 1775b). Burton's translation appeared in Fluid Dynamics, 34} (1999) pp. 801-82, Springer and is here adapted by permission. A detailed presentation of Euler's published work can be found in Truesdell, 1954. Euler's work is discussed also in the perspective of eighteenth century fluid dynamics research by Darrigol and Frisch, 2008. Explanatory footnotes have been supplied where necessary by G.K. Mikhailov and a few more by U. Frisch and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://O.Darrigol" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. Euler's memoir had neither footnotes nor a list of references.

On the Quantization of the Motion of Liquids

Abstract:For building up a theory of superfluid Helium-4, Lev Landau ingeniously unified the principles of quantum mechanics with the principles of hydrodynamics. By introducing a velocity operator he was able to derive a quantum analogue of the mass density flux equation and a quantum Euler equation. The article shows that it is possible to formulate a consistent quantum theory of the ideal liquid based on Landau's Quantum Hydrodynamics. This means that it is added the quantum analogue of the momentum density flux equation, the energy density flux equation, the entropy density flux equation, and a quantum vorticity equation. These are all manifestly in agreement with the classical limit of the flux equations of classical ideal liquids. It is also shown that the various aspects that have been criticised about Landau's Quantum Hydrodynamics - e.g. the application of the inverse of the mass density operator - are not justified. Such a consistent quantum theory of an ideal liquid may therefore provide a starting point of a complementary approach in the theoretical research of superfluid Helium 4.

On the Propulsion of a Rigid Body in a Viscous Liquid Under the Action of a Time-Periodic Force

Abstract:A rigid body $\mathcal{B}$ moves in an otherwise quiescent viscous liquid filling the whole space outside $\mathcal{B}$, under the action of a time-periodic force $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{f}}$ of period $T$ applied to a given point of $\mathcal{B}$ and of fixed direction. We assume that the average of $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{f}}$ over an interval of length $T$ does not not vanish, and that the amplitude, $\delta$, of $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{f}}$ is sufficiently small. Our goal is to investigate when $\mathcal{B}$ executes a non-zero net motion; that is, $\mathcal{B}$ is able to cover any prescribed distance in a finite time. We show that, at the order $\delta$, this happens if and only if $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{f}}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ satisfy a certain condition. We also show that this is always the case if $\mathcal{B}$ is prevented from spinning. Finally, we provide explicit examples where the condition above is satisfied or not. All our analysis is performed in a general class of weak solutions to the coupled system body-liquid problem.

Abstract:Viscoelastic materials containing bubbles or drops are encountered in numerous application fields, and are presently the object of much interest. The motion of bubbles and drops in these matrices can be significantly different than in Newtonian fluids. This review is restricted to the case of motion in quiescent fluids (or small Reynolds number) and of small bubbles and drops, that are not appreciably deformed during their motion. It includes a brief description of properties of viscoelastic systems and of the motion of solid particles in these systems. The case of very small drops undergoing Brownian motion is related to recent advances in microrheology. The motion of larger drops and bubbles due to gravity in yield stress fluids is discussed and linked to Ostwald ripening. Recent advances on the understanding of the rheological properties of the composite systems are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:We analyze the low-Reynolds-number translation of a sphere towards or away from a rigid plane in an Oldroyd-B fluid under two scenarios: prescribing the sphere's translational velocity, and prescribing the force on the sphere. Leveraging the lubrication approximation and a perturbation expansion in powers of the Deborah number, we develop a comprehensive theoretical analysis that yields analytical approximations for velocity fields, pressures, and forces acting on the sphere. Our framework aids in understanding temporal microstructural changes as the particle-wall gap evolves over time. In particular, we show that alterations in the polymer conformation tensor in response to geometric changes induce additional forces on the sphere. For cases with prescribed velocity, we present a theoretical approach for calculating resistive forces at any order in the Deborah number and utilize a reciprocal theorem to obtain higher-order corrections based on velocity fields in the previous orders. When the sphere translates with a constant velocity, the fluid viscoelasticity decreases the resistive force at the first order. However, at the second-order correction, the direction of the sphere's movement determines whether viscoelasticity increases or decreases the resistive force. For cases with prescribed force, we show that understanding the influence of viscoelasticity on the sphere's translational velocity necessitates a more intricate analysis even at low Deborah numbers. Specifically, we introduce an ansatz for constant force scenarios, and we derive solution forms for general prescribed forces using the method of multiple scales. We find that when a sphere undergoes sedimentation due to its own weight, the fluid viscoelasticity results in a slower settling process, reducing the leading-order sedimentation rate. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.083303 ©2024 American Physical Society

On the elongational viscosity of viscoelastic slip flows in hyperbolic confined geometries

Abstract:We study theoretically the elongational viscosity (or Trouton ratio, in dimensionless form) for steady viscoelastic flows in confined and symmetric hyperbolic tubes considering Navier-type slip along the wall(s). Both the planar and the cylindrical axisymmetric geometrical configurations are addressed. Under the classic lubrication approximation, and for a variety of constitutive models such as Phan-Thien and Tanner, Giesekus, and Finite Extensibility Nonlinear Elastic with the Peterlin approximation models, the same general analytical formula for the Trouton ratio is derived as for the Oldroyd-B model, in terms of the velocity at the midplane/axis of symmetry and the Deborah number only. Assuming that the velocity field is approximated by the Newtonian lubrication profile, based on our previous study in the absence of slip, we show that a constant extensional strain rate can be achieved in the limits of zero or infinite slip. For finite slip, a slight modification of the geometry is required to achieve a constant strain rate. In these cases, the formula for the steady state Trouton ratio reduces to that for transient homogeneous elongation. We also provide analytical formulae for the modification (decrease) for both the extensional strain rate and the Hencky strain achieved in the confined geometries because of introducing wall slip.

Abstract:We consider Leray's problem on stationary Navier-Stokes flows with arbitrary large fluxes in an unbounded cylinder with several exits to infinity. For a stationary Navier-Stokes flow with large fluxes in the unbounded cylinder we prove that, if the difference between the pressure of the main flow and the pressure of the Poiseuille flow with the same flux in a branch of the cylinder satisfies some asymptotic boundedness condition at $|x|\rightarrow \infty$ then the flow behaves at infinity of the branch like the Poiseuille flow.

Abstract:The present is a companion paper to "A contemporary look at Hermann Hankel's 1861 pioneering work on Lagrangian fluid dynamics" by Frisch, Grimberg and Villone (2017). Here we present the English translation of the 1861 prize manuscript from Göttingen University "Zur allgemeinen Theorie der Bewegung der Flüssigkeiten" (On the general theory of the motion of the fluids) of Hermann Hankel (1839-1873), which was originally submitted in Latin and then translated into German by the Author for publication. We also provide the English translation of two important reports on the manuscript, one written by Bernhard Riemann and the other by Wilhelm Eduard Weber, during the assessment process for the prize. Finally we give a short biography of Hermann Hankel with his complete bibliography.

Viscoelastic lubrication of a submerged cylinder sliding down an incline

Abstract:Lubrication flows between two solid surfaces can be found in a variety of biological and engineering settings. In many of these systems, the lubricant exhibits viscoelastic properties, which modify the associated lubrication forces. Here, we experimentally study viscoelastic lubrication by considering the motion of a submerged cylinder sliding down an incline. We demonstrate that cylinders move faster when released in a viscoelastic Boger liquid compared to a Newtonian liquid with similar viscosity. Cylinders exhibit pure sliding motion in viscoelastic liquids, in contrast to the stick-slip motion observed in Newtonian liquids. We rationalize our results by using the second-order fluid model, which predicts a lift force on the cylinder arising from the normal-stress differences provided by the dissolved polymers. The interplay between viscoelastic lift, viscous friction, and gravity leads to a prediction for the sliding speed, which is consistent with our experimental results for weakly viscoelastic flows. Finally, we identify a remarkable difference between the lubrication of cylindrical and spherical contacts, as the latter does not exhibit any lift for weak viscoelasticity.

Abstract:Many microfluidics devices, coating processes or diphasic flows involve the motion of a liquid meniscus on a wet wall. This motion induces a specific viscous force, that exhibits a non-linear dependency in the meniscus velocity. We propose a review of the theoretical and experimental work made on this viscous force, for simple interfacial properties. The interface is indeed assumed either perfectly compressible (mobile interface) or perfectly incompressible (rigid interface). We show that, in the second case, the viscous force exerted by the wall on the meniscus is a combination of two power laws, scaling like $Ca^{1/3}$ and $Ca^{2/3}$, with $Ca$ the capillary number. We provide a prediction for the stress exerted on a foam sliding on a wet solid and compare it with experimental data, for the incompressible case.

Geometric, Variational, and Bracket Descriptions of Fluid Motion with Open Boundaries

Abstract:We develop a Lie group geometric framework for the motion of fluids with permeable boundaries that extends Arnold's geometric description of fluid in closed domains. Our setting is based on the classical Hamilton principle applied to fluid trajectories, appropriately amended to incorporate bulk and boundary forces via a Lagrange-d'Alembert approach, and to take into account only the fluid particles present in the fluid domain at a given time. By applying a reduction by relabelling symmetries, we deduce a variational formulation in the Eulerian description that extends the Euler-Poincaré framework to open fluids. On the Hamiltonian side, our approach yields a bracket formulation that consistently extends the Lie-Poisson bracket of fluid dynamics and contains as a particular case a bulk+boundary bracket formulation proposed earlier. We illustrate the geometric framework with several examples, and also consider the extension of this setting to include multicomponent fluids, the consideration of general advected quantities, the analysis of higher-order fluids, and the incorporation of boundary stresses. Open fluids are found in a wide range of physical systems, including geophysical fluid dynamics, porous media, incompressible flow and magnetohydrodynamics. This new formulation permits a description based on geometric mechanics that can be applied to a broad class of models.

The break-up of free films pulled out of a pure liquid bath

Abstract:In this paper, we derive a lubrication model to describe the non-stationary free liquid film that is created when a vertical frame is pulled out of a liquid reservoir at a given velocity. We here focus on the case of a pure liquid, corresponding to a stress-free boundary condition at the liquid/air interfaces of the film, and thus employ an essentially extensional description of the flow. Taking into account van der Waals interactions between the interfaces, we observe that film rupture is well-defined in time as well as in space, which allows us to compute the critical thickness and the film height at the moment of rupture. The theoretical predictions of the model turn out to be in quantitative agreement with experimental measurements of the break-up height of silicone oil films in a wide range of pulling velocities and supporting fiber diameters.

Abstract:The dynamics of a tracer molecule near a fluid membrane is investigated, with particular emphasis given to the interplay between the instantaneous position of the particle and membrane fluctuations. It is found that hydrodynamic interactions creates memory effects in the diffusion process. The random motion of the particle is then shown to cross over from a ``bulk'' to a ``surface'' diffusive mode, in a way that crucially depends on the elastic properties of the interface.

Abstract:The van der Waals forces across a very thin liquid layer (nanofilm) in contact with a plane solid wall make the liquid nonhomogeneous. The dynamics of such flat liquid nanofilms is studied in isothermal case.The Navier–Stokes equations are unable to describe fluid motions in very thin films. The notion of surface free energy of a sharp interface separating gas and liquid layer is disqualified. The concept of disjoining pressure replaces the model of surface energy. In the nanofilm a supplementary free energy must be considered as a functional of the density.The equation of fluid motions along the nanofilm is obtained through the Hamilton variational principle by adding, to the conservative forces, the forces of viscosity in lubrication approximation. The evolution equation of the film thickness is deduced and takes into account the variation of the disjoining pressure along the layer.
