Abstract:This paper is devoted to the stabilization of the water-wave equations with surface tension through of an external pressure acting on a small part of the free surface. It is proved that the energy decays to zero exponentially in time, provided that the external pressure is given by the normal component of the velocity at the free surface multiplied by an appropriate cut-off function.

Abstract:Considering that the fluid is inviscid and incompressible and the flow is irrotational in a fixed frame of reference and using the multiple scale analysis method, we derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) describing the evolution dynamics of gravity-capillary wavetrains in arbitrary constant depth. The gravity-capillary waves (GCWs) are influenced by a linear shear flow (LSF) which consists of a uniform flow and a shear flow with constant vorticity. The modulational instability (MI) of GCWs with the LSF is analyzed using the NLSE. The MI is effectively modified by the LSF. In infinite depth, there are four asymptotes which are the boundaries between MI and modulational stability (MS) in the instability diagram. In addition, the dimensionless free surface elevation as a function of time for different dimensionless water depth, surface tension, uniform flow and vorticity is exhibited. It is found that the decay of free surface elevation and the steepness of free surface amplitude change over time, which are greatly affected by the water depth, surface tension, uniform flow and vorticity.

Abstract:Motivated by numerically modeling surface waves for inviscid Euler equations, we analyze linear models for damped water waves and establish decay properties for the energy for sufficiently regular initial configurations. Our findings give the explicit decay rates for the energy, but do not address reflection/transmission of waves at the interface of the damping. Still for a subset of the models considered, this represents the first result proving the decay of the energy of the surface wave models.

Abstract:We consider the free boundary problem for a layer of compressible viscous barotropic fluid lying above a fixed rigid bottom and below the atmosphere of positive constant pressure. The fluid dynamics is governed by the compressible Navier--Stokes equations with gravity, and the effect of surface tension is neglected on the upper free boundary. We prove the global well-posedness of the reformulated problem in flattening coordinates near the equilibrium in both two and three dimensions without any low frequency assumption of the initial data. The key ingredients here are the new control of the {\it Eulerian spatial derivatives} of the solution, which benefits a crucial nonlinear cancellation of the highest order spatial regularity of the free boundary, and the time weighted energy estimates.

Uniform in gravity estimates for 2D water waves

Abstract:We consider the 2D gravity water waves equation on an infinite domain. We prove a local wellposedness result which allows interfaces with corners and cusps as initial data and which is such that the time of existence of solutions is uniform even as the gravity parameter $g \to 0$. For $g>0$, we prove an improved blow up criterion for these singular solutions and we also prove an existence result for $g = 0$. Moreover the energy estimate used to prove this result is scaling invariant. As an application of this energy estimate, we then consider the water wave equation with no gravity where the fluid domain is homeomorphic to the disc. We prove a local wellposedness result which allows for interfaces with angled crests and cusps as initial data and then by a rigidity argument, we show that there exists initial interfaces with angled crests for which the energy blows up in finite time, thereby proving the optimality of this local wellposedness result. For smooth initial data, this local wellposedness result gives a longer time of existence as compared to previous results when the initial velocity is small and we also improve upon the blow up criterion.

Abstract:We consider the viscous incompressible fluids in a three-dimensional horizontally periodic domain bounded below by a fixed smooth boundary and above by a free moving surface. The fluid dynamics are governed by the Navier-Stokes equations with the effect of gravity and surface tension on the free surface. We develop a global well-posedness theory by a nonlinear energy method in low regular Sobolev spaces with several techniques, including: the horizontal energy-dissipation estimates, a new tripled bootstrap argument inspired by Guo and Tice [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal.(2018)]. Moreover, the solution decays asymptotically to the equilibrium in an exponential rate.

Spatially quasi-periodic water waves of infinite depth

Abstract:We formulate the two-dimensional gravity-capillary water wave equations in a spatially quasi-periodic setting and present a numerical study of solutions of the initial value problem. We propose a Fourier pseudo-spectral discretization of the equations of motion in which one-dimensional quasi-periodic functions are represented by two-dimensional periodic functions on a torus. We adopt a conformal mapping formulation and employ a quasi-periodic version of the Hilbert transform to determine the normal velocity of the free surface. Two methods of time-stepping the initial value problem are proposed, an explicit Runge-Kutta (ERK) method and an exponential time-differencing (ETD) scheme. The ETD approach makes use of the small-scale decomposition to eliminate stiffness due to surface tension. We perform a convergence study to compare the accuracy and efficiency of the methods on a traveling wave test problem. We also present an example of a periodic wave profile containing vertical tangent lines that is set in motion with a quasi-periodic velocity potential. As time evolves, each wave peak evolves differently, and only some of them overturn. Beyond water waves, we argue that spatial quasi-periodicity is a natural setting to study the dynamics of linear and nonlinear waves, offering a third option to the usual modeling assumption that solutions either evolve on a periodic domain or decay at infinity.

Compressible Gravity-Capillary Water Waves with Vorticity: Local Well-Posedness, Incompressible and Zero-Surface-Tension Limits

Abstract:We consider 3D compressible isentropic Euler equations describing the motion of a liquid in an unbounded initial domain with a moving boundary and a fixed flat bottom at finite depth. The liquid is under the influence of gravity and surface tension and it is not assumed to be irrotational. We prove local well-posedness by combining a carefully designed approximate system and a hyperbolic approach which allows us to avoid using Nash-Moser iteration. The energy estimates yield no regularity loss and are uniform in Mach number, and they are uniform in surface tension coefficient under the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition. We thus simultaneously obtain incompressible and zero surface tension limits. Moreover, we can drop the uniform boundedness (with respect to Mach number) on high-order time derivatives by applying the paradifferential calculus to the analysis of the free-surface evolution.

Abstract:Many physically interesting problems involve the propagation of free surfaces in fluids with surface tension effects. Surface tensions is an ever-present physical effect that is often neglected due to the difficulties associated with its inclusion in the equations of motion. Accurate simulation of these interfaces presents a problem of considerable difficulty on several levels. First, even for stably stratified flows like water waves, it turns out that straightforward spatial discretizations (of the boundary integral formulation) generate numerical instability. Second, surface tension introduces a large number of derivatives through the Laplace-Young boundary condition. This induces severe time step restrictions for explicit time integration methods. In this paper, we present a class of stable spatial discretizations and we present a reformulation of the equations of motion that make apparent how to remove the high order time step restrictions introduced by the surface tension. This paper is a review of the results given in [1,2].
Steady water-waves with arbitrary surface-pressure: Their recovery from bottom-pressure measurements

Abstract:Equations relating the pressure at a horizontal seabed, the free-surface profile and the surface-pressure are derived for two-dimensional irrotational steady water waves with arbitrary pressure at the free surface. Special cases include gravity, capillary, flexural and wind waves. Without approximations, we show that the free-surface recovery from the bottom-pressure requires the resolution of only one first-order ordinary differential equation independent of the surface-pressure, thus providing a new general recovery method valid for a broad class of water waves. Another equation provides an explicit expression for the surface-pressure as a function of the bottom-pressure and of the free-surface. Thus, if unknown, the surface-pressure can be also recovered if one extra measurement is available. This new recovery procedure is illustrated analytically for the linear approximation of a flexural-capillary-gravity wave, and numerically for fully nonlinear capillary-gravity waves.

Abstract:We consider the free boundary problem for a layer of incompressible fluid lying below the atmosphere and above a rigid bottom in the horizontally infinite setting. The fluid dynamics is governed by the incompressible Euler equations with damping and gravity, and the effect of surface tension is neglected on the upper free boundary. We prove the global well-posedness of the problem with the small initial data in both 2D and 3D. One of key ideas here is to make use of the time-weighted dissipation estimates to close the nonlinear energy estimates; in particular, this implies that the Lipschitz norm of the velocity is integrable-in-time, which is significantly different from that of viscous surface waves (Guo and Tice in Anal PDE 6(6):1429–1533, 2013; Wang in Adv Math 374:107330, 2020).

A fully Eulerian solver for the simulation of multiphase flows with solid bodies: application to surface gravity waves

Abstract:In this paper a fully Eulerian solver for the study of multiphase flows for simulating the propagation of surface gravity waves over submerged bodies is presented. We solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the volume of fluid technique for the modeling of the liquid phases with the interface, an immersed body method for the solid bodies and an iterative strong-coupling procedure for the fluid-structure interaction. The flow incompressibility is enforced via the solution of a Poisson equation which, owing to the density jump across the interfaces of the liquid phases, has to resort to the splitting procedure of Dodd & Ferrante [12]. The solver is validated through comparisons against classical test cases for fluid-structure interaction like migration of particles in pressure-driven channel, multiphase flows, water exit of a cylinder and a good agreement is found for all tests. Furthermore, we show the application of the solver to the case of a surface gravity wave propagating over a submerged reversed pendulum and verify that the solver can reproduce the energy exchange between the wave and the pendulum. Finally the three-dimensional spilling breaking of a wave induced by a submerged sphere is considered.

Abstract:We present a rigorous mathematical analysis of the modeling of inviscid water waves. The free-surface is described as a parametrized curve. We introduce a numerically stable algorithm which accounts for its evolution with time. The method is shown to converge using approximate solutions, such as Stokes waves and Green-Naghdi solitary waves. It is finally tested on a wave breaking problem, for which an odd-even coupling suffices to achieve numerical convergence up to the splash without the need for additional filtering.

Abstract:We provide a new method for treating free boundary problems in perfect fluids, and prove local-in-time well-posedness in Sobolev spaces for the free-surface incompressible 3D Euler equations with or without surface tension for arbitrary initial data, and without any irrotationality assumption on the fluid. This is a free boundary problem for the motion of an incompressible perfect liquid in vacuum, wherein the motion of the fluid interacts with the motion of the free-surface at highest-order.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a layer of incompressible viscous fluid lying above a flat periodic surface in a uniform gravitational field. The upper boundary of the fluid is free and evolves in time. We assume that a mass of surfactants resides on the free surface and evolves in time with the fluid. The surfactants dynamics couple to the fluid dynamics by adjusting the surface tension coefficient on the interface and also through tangential Marangoni stresses caused by gradients in surfactant concentration. We prove that small perturbations of equilibria give rise to global-in-time solutions in an appropriate functional space, and we prove that the solutions return to equilibrium exponentially fast. In particular this proves the asymptotic stability of equilibria.

Abstract:The stability of an exponential current in water to infinitesimal perturbations in the presence of gravity and capillarity is investigated. Some new results on the generation of gravity-capillary waves are presented which supplement the previous works of Morland, Saffman \& Yuen (1991) and Young \& Wolfe (2014), namely in finite depth. To consider perturbations of much larger scales, a specific attention is paid to the stability of the exponential current only in the presence of gravity.

Abstract:We study the strong stabilization of wave equations on some sphere-like manifolds, with rough damping terms which do not satisfy the geometric control condition posed by Rauch-Taylor and Bardos-Lebeau-Rauch. We begin with an unpublished result of G. Lebeau, which states that on S^d , the indicator function of the upper hemisphere strongly stabilizes the damped wave equation, even though the equators, which are geodesics contained in the boundary of the upper hemisphere, do not enter the damping region. Then we extend this result on dimension 2, to Zoll surfaces of revolution, whose geometry is similar to that of S^2 . In particular, geometric objects such as the equator, and the hemi-surfaces are well defined. Our result states that the indicator function of the upper hemi-surface strongly stabilizes the damped wave equation, even though the equator, as a geodesic, does not enter the upper hemi-surface either.

Irrotationality of Water Waves and Topography

Abstract:Most theoretical and numerical results regarding water waves rely on the irrotationality of the flow in order to simplify significantly the mathematical formulation. This assumption is rarely discussed in details. In this work we investigate the well-foundedness of this important hypothesis using numerical simulations of the free-surface Navier-Stokes equation, using a scheme introduced in Riquier and Dormy (2024). We show that, in the presence of an irregular bottom, a gravity wave of non-negligible height can effectively destabilise the bottom boundary layer, stripping off vortices into the main flow. As a vortex approaches the surface the solution of the Navier-Stokes flow in the limit of vanishing viscosity is shown to differ from the inviscid Euler solution.
