Abstract:We propose a general framework to simulate stochastic trajectories with arbitrarily long memory dependence and efficiently evaluate large deviation functions associated to time-extensive observables. This extends the "cloning" procedure of Giardiná et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 120603 (2006)] to non-Markovian systems. We demonstrate the validity of this method by testing non-Markovian variants of an ion-channel model and the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process, recovering results obtainable by other means.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the problem of large deviation evaluation in non-Markovian processes. Specifically, the authors propose a general framework for simulating random trajectories with arbitrarily long memory dependencies and effectively evaluating large deviation functions associated with time-extended observables. This method is an extension of the "cloning" procedure proposed by Giardinà et al., making it applicable to non-Markovian systems. The main contributions of the paper include: 1. **Proposing a numerical method**: This method is based on the "cloning" procedure and can generate trajectories corresponding to extremely rare observables, thereby efficiently estimating large deviation functions. 2. **Validating the method's effectiveness**: The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by testing it on a non-Markovian variant of the ion channel model and the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process (TASEP). 3. **Special case analysis**: For semi-Markov processes, the framework has a particularly clear interpretation and can be understood in the form of a generalized master equation. 4. **Providing several examples**: These include ion channel models with directional time independence, models that do not satisfy directional time independence, and historical dependencies in the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process. In short, the goal of this paper is to provide an effective numerical method for studying large deviation phenomena in non-Markovian systems and to validate its feasibility through specific models.
