Abstract:We study mixed versions of the classical quotient functor from Chow motives to numerical motives. We compare two natural definitions, which turn out to be very different. We investigate fullness, conservativity and exactness of these two functors.

Abstract:In this article we further the study of noncommutative numerical motives. By exploring the change-of-coefficients mechanism, we start by improving some of our previous main results. Then, making use of the notion of Schur-finiteness, we prove that the category NNum(k)_F of noncommutative numerical motives is (neutral) super-Tannakian. As in the commutative world, NNum(k)_F is not Tannakian. In order to solve this problem we promote periodic cyclic homology to a well-defined symmetric monoidal functor HP on the category of noncommutative Chow motives. This allows us to introduce the correct noncommutative analogues C_NC and D_NC of Grothendieck's standard conjectures C and D. Assuming C_NC, we prove that NNum(k)_F can be made into a Tannakian category NNum'(k)_F by modifying its symmetry isomorphism constraints. By further assuming D_NC, we neutralize the Tannakian category NNum'(k)_F using HP. Via the (super-)Tannakian formalism, we then obtain well-defined noncommutative motivic (super-)Galois groups. Finally, making use of Deligne-Milne's theory of Tate triples, we construct explicit homomorphisms relating these new noncommutative motivic (super-)Galois groups with the classical ones.

Abstract:Given a pure motive $M$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with a multilinear algebraic structure $\mathsf{s}$ on $M$, and given a representation $V$ of the group respecting $\mathsf{s}$, we describe a functorial transfer $M^V$. We formulate a criterion that guarantees when the two periods of $M^V$ are equal. This has an implication for the critical values of the $L$-function attached to $M^V.$ The criterion is explicated in a variety of examples such as: tensor product motives and Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions; orthogonal motives and the standard $L$-function for even orthogonal groups; twisted tensor motives and Asai $L$-functions.

Isotropic and numerical equivalence for Chow groups and Morava K-theories

Abstract:In this paper we prove the conjecture claiming that, over a flexible field, isotropic Chow groups coincide with numerical Chow groups (with ${\Bbb{F}}_p$-coefficients). This shows that Isotropic Chow motives coincide with Numerical Chow motives. In particular, homs between such objects are finite groups and $\otimes$ has no zero-divisors. It provides a large supply of new points for the Balmer spectrum of the Voevodsky motivic category. We also prove the Morava K-theory version of the above result, which permits to construct plenty of new points for the Balmer spectrum of the Morel-Voevodsky ${\Bbb{A}}^1$-stable homotopic category. This substantially improves our understanding of the mentioned spectra whose description is a major open problem.

Abstract:In this note, without the assumption of resolution of singularities, we prove an equivalence between the category of motives with modulus in positive characteristic with rational coefficient $\MDM^\eff(k,\Q)$ and Voevodsky's category of motives $\DM^\eff(k,\Q)$, which has been philosophically predicted from the beginning in the study of motives with modulus.

Abstract:We define and study the motive of the moduli stack of vector bundles of fixed rank and degree over a smooth projective curve in Voevodsky's category of motives. We prove that this motive can be written as a homotopy colimit of motives of smooth projective Quot schemes of torsion quotients of sums of line bundles on the curve. When working with rational coefficients, we prove that the motive of the stack of bundles lies in the localising tensor subcategory generated by the motive of the curve, using Bialynicki-Birula decompositions of these Quot schemes. We conjecture a formula for the motive of this stack, and we prove this conjecture modulo a conjecture on the intersection theory of the Quot schemes.

As an main application, we determine the motive of low rank character varieties associated with torus knots and general linear groups using an equivariant analogue of the strategy for special linear groups due to A.González-Prieto and V.Muñoz.

Abstract:We introduce a tower of localizing subcategories in Voevodsky's big (closed under infinite coproducts) triangulated category of motives. We show that the tower induces a finite filtration on the motivic cohomology groups of smooth schemes over a perfect field. With rational coefficients, this finite filtration satisfies several of the properties of the still conjectural Bloch–Beilinson–Murre filtration.

Abstract:Motivated by Murre's work on universal regular homomorphisms on Chow groups in codimension $2,$ we generalize the algebraic equivalence relation and regular homomorphisms to the context of Voevodsky motives over a field. In the Nisnevich topology, we prove the existence of \emph{universal} regular homomorphisms for a certain class of motivic cohomology groups, recovering Murre's theorem and the existence of Picard and Albanese varieties as special cases. This class also includes interesting cases such as higher Chow groups and Milnor $K$-groups. The appendix by Kahn proves that, for étale motives, universal regular homomorphisms exist for all geometric motives and compares them with those in the Nisnevich topology when both exist.

Abstract:These notes are devoted to the study of generic motives and their application to the structure of the motivic cohomology of fields. Related to Voevodsky's homotopy $t$-structure on motivic complexes, generic motives are also central to the conjectural motivic $t$-structure, as was shown by Beilinson. Morphisms of generic motives are closely related to the functoriality of Rost's cycle modules. e obtain some new computations of generic motives, and deduce computations of morphisms of generic motives, which draw a conjectural picture. The structure of generic motives reflects into that of motivic cohomology of fields. After giving a new argument for determining weights in the K-theory of number fields using Borel's isomorphism, we deduce that many motivic cohomology groups of fields have infinite rank, usually of the same cardinality as the field itself. As an example motivic cohomology groups of the real or complex numbers are shown to be uncountable in many degrees and twists. Despite these results, we formulate a hope on their behavior with respect to transcendental elements, providing a counterpart to the Beilinson-Soulé vanishing conjecture.

Noncommutative Motives I: A Universal Characterization of the Motivic Stable Homotopy Theory of Schemes

Abstract:Let $\V$ be a symmetric monoidal model category and let $X$ be an object in $\V$. From this we can construct a new symmetric monoidal model category $Sp^{\Sigma}(\V,X)$ of symmetric spectra objects in $\V$ with respect to $X$, together with a left Quillen monoidal map $\V\to Sp^{\Sigma}(\V,X)$ sending $X$ to an invertible object. In this paper we use the recent developments in the subject of Higher Algebra to understand the nature of this construction. Every symmetric monoidal model category has an underlying symmetric monoidal $(\infty,1)$-category and the first notion should be understood as a mere "presentation" of the second. Our main result is the characterization of the underlying symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category of $Sp^{\Sigma}(\V,X)$, by means of a universal property inside the world of symmetric monoidal $(\infty,1)$-categories. In the process we also describe the link between the construction of ordinary spectra and the one of symmetric spectra. As a corollary, we obtain a precise universal characterization for the motivic stable homotopy theory of schemes with its symmetric monoidal structure. This characterization trivializes the problem of finding motivic monoidal realizations and opens the way to compare the motivic theory of schemes with other motivic theories. As an application we provide a new approach to the theory of noncommutative motives by constructing a stable motivic homotopy theory for the noncommutative spaces of Kontsevich. For that we introduce an analogue for the Nisnevich topology in the noncommutative setting. Our universal property for the classical theory for schemes provides a canonical monoidal map towards these new noncommutative motives and allows us to compare the two theories.

Abstract:We show that the derived category of perverse Nori motives and mixed Hodge modules are the derived categories of their constructible hearts. This enables us to construct $\infty$-categorical lifts of the six operations and therefore to obtain realisation functors from the category of Voevodsky étale motives to the derived categories of perverse Nori motives and mixed Hodge modules that commute with the operations. We give a proof that the realisation induces an equivalence of categories between Artin motives in the category of étale motives and Artin motives in the derived category of Nori motives. We also prove that if a motivic $t$-structure exists then Voevodsky étale motives and the derived category of perverse Nori motives are equivalent. Finally we give a presentation of the indization of the derived category of perverse Nori motives as a category of modules in Voevodsky étale motives that gives a continuity result for perverse Nori motives.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero with a fixed embedding $\sigma:k\hookrightarrow \mathbb{C}$ into the field of complex numbers. Given a $k$-variety $X$, we use the triangulated category of étale motives with rational coefficients on $X$ to construct an abelian category $\mathscr{M}(X)$ of perverse mixed motives. We show that over $\mathrm{Spec}(k)$ the category obtained is canonically equivalent to the usual category of Nori motives and that the derived categories $\mathrm{D}^{\mathrm{b}}(\mathscr{M}(X))$ are equipped with the four operations of Grothendieck (for morphisms of quasi-projective $k$-varieties) as well as nearby and vanishing cycles functors and a formalism of weights. In particular, as an application, we show that many classical constructions done with perverse sheaves, such as intersection cohomology groups or Leray spectral sequences, are motivic and therefore compatible with Hodge theory. This recovers and strengthens work by Zucker, Saito, Arapura and de Cataldo-Migliorini and provide an arithmetic proof of the pureness of intersection cohomology with coefficients in a geometric variation of Hodge structures.

Abstract:This book discusses the construction of triangulated categories of mixed motives over a noetherian scheme of finite dimension, extending Voevodsky's definition of motives over a field. In particular, it is shown that motives with rational coefficients satisfy the formalism of the six operations of Grothendieck. This is achieved by studying descent properties of motives, as well as by comparing different presentations of these categories, following and extending insights and constructions of Deligne, Beilinson, Bloch, Thomason, Gabber, Levine, Morel, Voevodsky, Ayoub, Spitzweck, Röndigs, Østvær, and others. In particular, the relation of motives with $K$-theory is addressed in full, and we prove the absolute purity theorem with rational coefficients, using Quillen's localization theorem in algebraic $K$-theory together with a variation on the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem. Using resolution of singularities via alterations of de Jong-Gabber, this leads to a version of Grothendieck-Verdier duality for constructible motivic sheaves with rational coefficients over rather general base schemes. We also study versions with integral coefficients, constructed via sheaves with transfers, for which we obtain partial results. Finally, we associate to any mixed Weil cohomology a system of categories of coefficients and well behaved realization functors, establishing a correspondence between mixed Weil cohomologies and suitable systems of coefficients. The results of this book have already served as ground reference in many subsequent works on motivic sheaves and their realizations, and pointers to the most recent developments of the theory are given in the introduction.

Abstract:We investigate the (separated) monomorphism category $\operatorname{mono}(Q,\Lambda)$ of a quiver $Q$ over an Artin algebra $\Lambda$. We construct an epivalence from $\overline{\operatorname{mono}}(Q,\Lambda)$ to $\operatorname{rep}(Q,\overline{\operatorname{mod}}\, \Lambda)$, where $\operatorname{mod}\Lambda$ is the category of finitely generated modules and $\overline{\operatorname{mod}}\, \Lambda$ and $\overline{\operatorname{mono}}(Q,\Lambda)$ denote the respective injectively stable categories. Furthermore, if $Q$ has at least one arrow, then we show that this is an equivalence if and only if $\Lambda$ is hereditary. In general, it induces a bijection between indecomposable objects in $\operatorname{rep}(Q,\overline{\operatorname{mod}}\, \Lambda)$ and non-injective indecomposable objects in $\operatorname{mono}(Q,\Lambda)$. We show that the generalized Mimo-construction, an explicit minimal right approximation into $\operatorname{mono}{(Q,\Lambda)}$, gives an inverse to this bijection. Using this, we describe the indecomposables in the monomorphism category of a radical-square-zero Nakayama algebra, and give a bijection between the indecomposables in the monomorphism category of two artinian uniserial rings of Loewy length $3$ with the same residue field. These results are proved using free monads on an abelian category, in order to avoid the technical combinatorics arising from quiver representations. The setup also specializes to representations of modulations. In particular, we obtain new results on the singularity category of the algebras $H$ which were introduced by Geiss, Leclerc, and Schröer in order to extend their results relating cluster algebras and Lusztig's semicanonical basis to symmetrizable Cartan matrices. We also recover results on the $\iota$quivers algebras which were introduced by Lu and Wang to realize $\iota$quantum groups via semi-derived Hall algebras.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a quasi DG category, generalizing that of a DG category. To a quasi DG category satisfying certain additional conditions, we associate another quasi DG category, the quasi DG category of $C$-diagrams. We then show the homotopy category of the quasi DG category of $C$-diagrams has the structure of a triangulated category. This procedure is then applied to produce a triangulated category of mixed motives over a base variety.
