Abstract:It is well known in general relativity that trajectories of Hamiltonian systems lift to geodesics of pp-wave spacetimes, an example of a more general phenomenon known as the "Eisenhart lift." We review and expand upon the benefits of this correspondence for dynamical systems theory. One benefit is the use of curvature and conjugate points to study the stability of Hamiltonian systems. Another benefit is that this lift unfolds a Hamiltonian system into a family of ODEs akin to a moduli space. One such family arises from the conformal invariance of lightlike geodesics, by which any Hamiltonian system unfolds into a "conformal class" of non-diffeomorphic ODEs with solutions in common. By utilizing higher-index versions of pp-waves, a similar lift and conformal class are shown to exist for certain second-order complex ODEs. Another such family occurs by lifting to a Riemannian metric that is dual to a pp-wave, a process that in certain cases yields a "square root" for the Hamiltonian. We prove a two-point boundary result for the family of ODEs arising from this lift, as well as the existence of a constant of the motion generalizing conservation of energy.

Non-contractible orbits for Hamiltonian functions on Riemann surfaces

Abstract:We consider two disjoint and homotopic non-contractible embedded loops on a Riemann surface and prove the existence of a non-contractible orbit for a Hamiltonian function on the surface whenever it is sufficiently large on one of the loops and sufficiently small on the other one. This gives the first example of an estimate from above for a generalized form of the Biran-Polterovich-Salamon capacity for a closed symplectic manifold.

Contactifications: a Lagrangian description of compact Hamiltonian systems

Abstract:If $\eta$ is a contact form on a manifold $M$ such that the orbits of the Reeb vector field form a simple foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on $M$, then the presymplectic 2-form $d\eta$ on $M$ induces a symplectic structure $\omega$ on the quotient manifold $N=M/\mathcal{F}$. We call $(M,\eta)$ a $\textit contactification$ of the symplectic manifold $(N,\omega)$. First, we present an explicit geometric construction of contactifications of some coadjoint orbits of connected Lie groups. Our construction is a far going generalization of the well-known contactification of the complex projective space $\mathbb{C}P^{n-1}$, being the unit sphere $S^{2n-1}$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$, and equipped with the restriction of the Liouville 1-form on $\mathbb{C}^n$. Second, we describe a constructive procedure for obtaining contactification in the process of the Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer symplectic reduction and indicate geometric obstructions for the existence of compact contactifications. Third, we show that contactifications provide a nice geometrical tool for a Lagrangian description of Hamiltonian systems on compact symplectic manifolds $(N,\omega)$, on which symplectic forms never admit a `vector potential'.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss lifting laws which, roughly, are ways of "lifting" elements of the open orbit of one prehomogeneous vector space to elements of the minimal nonzero orbit of another prehomogeneous vector space. We prove a handful of these lifting laws, and show how they can be used to help solve certain problems in arithmetic invariant theory. Of the results contained in this article are twisted versions of certain parametrization theorems of Bhargava.

Liouville-Arnold theorem for contact Hamiltonian systems

Abstract:A Hamiltonian system is completely integrable (in the sense of Liouville) if there exist as many independent integrals of motion in involution as the dimension of the configuration space. Under certain regularity conditions, Liouville-Arnold theorem states that the invariant geometric structure associated with Liouville integrability is a fibration by Lagrangian tori (or, more generally, Abelian groups), on which the motion is linear. In this paper, a Liouville-Arnold theorem for contact Hamiltonian systems is proven. In particular, it is shown that, given a $(2n+1)$-dimensional completely integrable contact system, one can construct a foliation by $(n+1)$-dimensional Abelian groups and induce action-angle coordinates in which the equations of motion are linearized. One important novelty with respect to previous attempts is that the foliation consists of $(n+1)$-dimensional coisotropic submanifolds given by the preimages of rays by the functions in involution. In order to prove the theorem, we first develop a version of Liouville-Arnold theorem for homogeneous functions in exact symplectic manifolds (which is of independent interest), and then apply symplectization to obtain the contact case.

Abstract:Given a closed, orientable Lagrangian submanifold L in a symplectic manifold ( X , ω ), we show that if L is relatively exact then any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism preserving L setwise must preserve its orientation. In contrast to previous results in this direction, there are no spin hypotheses on L . Curiously, the proof uses only mod 2 coefficients in its singular and Floer cohomology rings.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the following problem: given a Lagrangian $L$ and a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism $\varphi$ such that $\varphi(L)$ is in a small neighbourhood $U$ of $L$, does there exist another Hamiltonian isotopy from $L$ to $\varphi(L)$ supported in $U$? On one side, we construct an irrational counterexample in any symplectic manifold of dimension at least six. On the other side, we answer an a priori weaker form of the question by the positive in many cases when $L$ satisfies some rationality condition. The techniques that we develop also have applications for the Lagrangian counterpart of the $C^0$ flux conjecture. In turn, these results have many applications, in particular, to understand $C^0$-rigidity phenomena of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms and the space of Lagrangians with a given rationality constant.

Abstract:We construct on $\R^{2d}$, for any $d \geq 3$, smooth Hamiltonians having an elliptic equilibrium with an arbitrary frequency, that is not accumulated by a positive measure set of invariant tori. For $d\geq 4$, the Hamiltonians we construct have not any invariant torus of dimension $d$. Our examples are obtained by a version of the successive conjugation scheme {\it à la} Anosov-Katok.

Abstract:In this note we show that $+1$-contact surgery on distinct Legendrian knots frequently produces contactomorphic manifolds. We also give examples where this happens for $-1$-contact surgery. As an amusing corollary we find overtwisted contact structures that contain a large number of distinct Legendrian knots with the same classical invariants and tight complements.

On the set of asymptotic homologies of orbits on invariant Lagrangian graphs

Abstract:Given a smooth Tonelli Hamiltonian on the torus $\mathbb{T}^{n}$ and a $C^{2}$ Lagrangian graph $W \subset T^{*}\mathbb{T}^{n}$ that is invariant under the Hamiltonian flow and contained within a Mañé supercritical energy level, we demonstrate the existence of a proper cone in the first real homology group $H_1(\mathbb{T}^n,\mathbb{R})$ that contains the asymptotic homologies of the canonical projections of recurrent orbits in $W$. Additionally, for invariant Lagrangian graphs on $\mathbb{T}^{3}$, drawing on Franks' theory of the rotation set of homeomorphisms of $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ homotopic to the identity, we show that under certain assumptions for an invariant Lagrangian graph on $\mathbb{T}^{3}$, if there exists a rational vector in homology contained in the set of asymptotic homologies of orbits on the Lagrangian graph, then the graph contains a Mather measure supported on a periodic orbit. This result generalizes a well-known fact for Lagrangian graphs on $\mathbb{T}^{2}$. Finally, we exploit these results for three dimensional tori to give a partial answer to a conjecture by Carneiro-Ruggiero about the non-existence of Hedlund Lagrangian tori at supercritical energy levels.

On a symplectic generalization of a Hirzebruch problem

Abstract:Motivated by a problem of Hirzebruch, we study $8$-dimensional, closed, symplectic manifolds having a Hamiltonian torus action with isolated fixed points and second Betti number equal to $1$. Such manifolds are automatically positive monotone. Our main result concerns those endowed with a Hamiltonian $T^2$-action and fourth Betti number equal to $2$. We classify their isotropy data, (equivariant) cohomology rings and (equivariant) Chern classes, and prove that they agree with those of certain explicit Fano $4$-folds with torus actions. Moreover, under more general assumptions, we prove several finiteness results concerning Betti and Chern numbers of $8$-dimensional, positive monotone symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian torus action.

On the rigidity of translated points

Abstract:We show that there exist contact isotopies of the standard contact sphere whose time-1 maps do not have any translated points which are optimally close to the identity in the Shelukhin-Hofer distance. This proves the sharpness of a theorem of Shelukhin on the existence of translated points for contact isotopies of Liouville fillable contact manifolds with small enough Shelukhin-Hofer norm.

On non-contractible hyperbolic periodic orbits and periodic points of symplectomorphisms

Abstract:We prove the existence of infinitely many periodic points of symplectomorphisms isotopic to the identity if they admit at least one (non-contractible) hyperbolic periodic orbit and satisfy some condition on its flux. The obtained periodic points correspond to periodic orbits whose free homotopy classes are formed by iterations of the hyperbolic periodic orbit. Our result is proved for a certain class of closed symplectic manifolds and the main tool we use is a variation of Floer theory for non-contractible periodic orbits and symplectomorphisms, the Floer-Novikov theory. For a certain class of symplectic manifolds, the theorem generalizes the main results proved for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms in GG14 and for symplectomorphisms and contractible orbits in Ba15.

Abstract:We use contact fiber sums of open book decompositions to define an infinite hierarchy of filling obstructions for contact 3-manifolds, called planar k-torsion for nonnegative integers k, all of which cause the contact invariant in Embedded Contact Homology to vanish. Planar 0-torsion is equivalent to overtwistedness, while every contact manifold with Giroux torsion also has planar 1-torsion, and we give examples of contact manifolds that have planar k-torsion for any $k \ge 2$ but no Giroux torsion, leading to many new examples of nonfillable contact manifolds. We show also that the complement of the binding of a supporting open book never has planar torsion. The technical basis of these results is an existence and uniqueness theorem for J-holomorphic curves with positive ends approaching the (possibly blown up) binding of an ensemble of open book decompositions.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a closed surface of genus $g\geq 1$, furnished with an area form $\omega$. We show that there exists an open and dense set ${\mathcal O_r}$ of the space of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of class $C^r$, $1\leq r\leq\infty$, endowed with the $C^r$-topology, such that every $f\in \mathcal O_r$ possesses infinitely many non contractible periodic orbits. We obtain a positive answer to a question asked by Viktor Ginzburg and Başak Gürel. The proof is a consequence of recent previous works of the authors [LecSa].

Holonomy of parabolic geometries near isolated higher-order fixed points

Abstract:For Cartan geometries admitting automorphisms with isotropies satisfying a particular, loosely dynamical property on their model geometries, we demonstrate the existence of an open subset of the geometry with trivial holonomy. This property, which generalizes characteristics of isotropies corresponding to isolated higher-order fixed points in parabolic geometries that are known to require a nearby open subset to have vanishing curvature, only relies upon the behavior of the isotropy in the model geometry, and therefore applies regardless of initial curvature assumptions, such as regularity or normality. Along the way to proving our main results, we also derive a couple of results for working with holonomy, relating to limits of sequences of developments and the existence of antidevelopments, that are useful in their own right. To showcase the effectiveness of the techniques developed, we use them to completely characterize all almost c-projective and almost quaternionic structures that admit a nontrivial automorphism with a higher-order fixed point, as well as all nondegenerate partially integrable almost CR structures that admit a higher-order fixed point with non-null isotropy.

Non-orderability and the contact Hofer norm

Abstract:We relate non-orderability in contact topology to shortening in the contact Hofer norm. Combined with considerations of open books, this provides many new examples of non-orderable contact manifolds, including contact boundaries of subcritical Weinstein domains, and in particular the long-standing case of the standard $S^1 \times S^2.$ We also produce new examples of contact manifolds admitting contactomorphisms without translated points, provide obstructions to subcritical polarizations of symplectic manifolds, and establish a $\mathcal{C}^0$-continuity property of the contact Hofer metric.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the relationship between dynamical symmetries, Cartan symmetries, and dynamical similarities in contact mechanics. Using an alternative decomposition of vector fields, we provide a characterization of those symmetries and a new description in terms of tensor densities. Additionally, we show that, in certain cases, this construction enables the recovery of integrals of motion.

Abstract:We propose a twist condition, inspired by the classical Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem on area-preserving maps of the annulus, which applies to asymptotically linear Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of linear phase space.
