Abstract:Exclusive processes in hard electroproduction is one of the best place for understanding the factorization properties of QCD. The HERA experiment recently provided precise data for rho electroproduction, including all spin density matrix elements. From QCD, it is expected that such a process should factorize between a hard (calculable) coefficient function, and hadronic (p and rho) matrix elements. Such a factorization is up to now only proven for a longitudinaly polarized rho. Within the kt-factorization approach (valid at large s_{gamma* p}), we evaluate the impact factor of the transition gamma* -> rhoT taking into account the twist 3 contributions. We show that a gauge invariant expression is obtained with the help of QCD equations of motion. More generally, relying on these equations and on the invariance under rotation on the light-cone of the factorized amplitude, the non-perturbative Distribution Amplitudes can be reduced to a minimal set. This opens the way to a consistent treatment of factorization for exclusive processes with a transversally polarized vector meson. We prove the equivalence of two proposed parametrizations of the rhoT distribution amplitudes.

Abstract:We first revisit impact-parameter dependent collisions of ultra-relativistic particles in quantum field theory. Two conditions sufficient for defining an impact-parameter dependent cross section are given, which could be violated in proton-proton collisions. By imposing these conditions, a general formula for the impact-parameter dependent cross section is derived. Then, using soft-collinear effective theory, we derive a factorization formula for the impact-parameter dependent cross section for inclusive hard processes with only colorless final-state products in hadron and nuclear collisions. It entails defining thickness beam functions, which are Fourier transforms of transverse phase-space parton distribution functions. By modelling non-perturbative modes in thickness beam functions of large nuclei in heavy-ion collisions, the factorization formula confirms the cross section in the Glauber model for hard processes. Besides, the factorization formula is verified up to one loop in perturbative QCD for the inclusive Drell-Yan process in quark-antiquark collisions at a finite impact parameter.

Abstract:We extend the discussion of the recently discovered 'anomaly poles' in QCD Compton scattering. We perform the complete one-loop calculation of the Compton amplitude using momentum transfer $t$ as the regulator of collinear divergences. In the gluon channel, we confirm the presence of poles $1/t$ in both the real and imaginary parts of the amplitude. In the quark channel, we find unexpected infrared single $1/\epsilon$ and double $1/\epsilon^2$ poles. We then perform the one-loop calculation of the leading-twist quark generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for quark and gluon external states with the same regulators and find that all these singular terms can be systematically absorbed into the GPDs, showing that QCD factorization is restored to this order. Having established this, we discuss the fate of the $1/t$ poles. We argue that they become the nonperturbative building blocks of GPDs that encode the chiral and trace anomalies of QCD, in a way consistent with the known constraints these anomalies impose on the nucleon axial and gravitational form factors. The scope of research on GPDs can therefore be expanded to address the manifestation and implications of quantum anomalies in high-energy exclusive processes.

Abstract:We analyze the low-energy dynamics of gap-between-jets cross sections at hadron colliders, for which phase factors in the hard amplitudes spoil collinear cancellations and lead to double (``super-leading'') logarithmic behavior. Based on a method-of-regions analysis, we identify three-loop contributions from perturbative active-active Glauber-gluon exchanges with the right structure to render the cross section consistent with PDF factorization below the gap veto scale. The Glauber contributions we identify are unambiguously defined without regulators beyond dimensional regularization.

Abstract:The factorization theorems of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) apply equally well to most simple quantum field theories that require renormalization but where direct calculations are much more straightforward. Working with these simpler theories is convenient for stress-testing the limits of the factorization program and for examining general properties of the parton density functions (pdfs) or other correlation functions that might be necessary for a factorized description of a process. With this view in mind, we review the steps of factorization in a real scalar Yukawa field theory for both deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) cross sections. In the case of SIDIS, we illustrate how to separate the small transverse momentum region, where transverse momentum dependent (TMD) pdfs are needed, from a purely collinear large transverse momentum region, and we examine the influence of subleading power corrections. We also review the steps for formulating TMD factorization in transverse coordinate space, and we study the effect of transforming to the well-known $b_*$-scheme. Within the Yukawa theory, we investigate the consequences of switching to a generalized parton model (GPM) approach, and compare with a fully factorized approach. Our results highlight the need to address similar or analogous issues in QCD.

Abstract:We analyse polarised Drell-Yan process using the factorisation method and derive operator definitions for polarised parton distribution functions. We demonstrate that a factorisation analogous to that in the unpolarised Drell-Yan case holds in this process. We study the leading order gluonic contribution to the first moment of polarised Drell-Yan function and show that it is consistent with results obtained from polarised deep inelastic scattering.

Abstract:Factorization underlies all predictions at the Large Hadron Collider, but has only been rigorously proven in a few cases. One of these cases is the Drell-Yan process, pp→Z/γ+X , in the limit of small-boson transverse momentum. We introduce a one-parameter family of observables, that we call vector angularities, of which the transverse momentum is a special case. This enables the study of factorization violation, with a smooth transition to the limit for which factorization has been established. Like the angularity event shapes, vector angularities are a sum of transverse momenta weighted by rapidity, but crucially this is a vector sum rather than a sum of the magnitude of transverse momenta. We study these observables in pythia , using the effect of multiparton interactions (MPI) as a proxy factorization violation, finding a negligible effect in the case where factorization is established but sizable effects away from it. We also present a factorization formula for the cross section, that does not include factorization violating contributions from Glauber gluons, and thus offers a baseline for studying factorization violation experimentally using vector angularities. Factorization and its Breaking in Dijet Single Transverse Spin Asymmetries in $pp$ Collisions

Abstract:We study factorization in single transverse spin asymmetries for dijet production in proton-proton collisions, by considering soft gluon radiation at one-loop order. We show that the associated transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization is valid at the leading logarithmic level. At next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy, however, we find that soft gluon radiation generates terms in the single transverse spin dependent cross section that differ from those known for the unpolarized case. As a consequence, these terms cannot be organized in terms of a spin independent soft factor in the factorization formula. We present leading logarithmic predictions for the single transverse spin dijet asymmetry for $pp$ collisions at RHIC, based on quark Sivers functions constrained by semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data. We hope that our results will contribute to a better understanding of TMD factorization breaking effects at NLL accuracy and beyond.

Transverse-momentum-dependent factorization at next-to-leading power

Abstract: We study transverse momentum dependent factorization and resummation at sub-leading power in Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In these processes the sub-leading power contributions to the cross section enter as a kinematic power correction to the leptonic tensor, and the kinematic, intrinsic, and dynamic sub-leading contributions to the hadronic tensor. By consistently treating the power counting of the interactions, we demonstrate renormalization group consistency. We calculate the anomalous dimensions of the kinematic and intrinsic sub-leading correlation functions at one loop and find that the evolution equations give rise to anomalous dimension matrices which mix leading and sub-leading power distribution functions. Additionally we calculate the hard and soft functions associated with each of these contributions. We find that these hard and soft contributions differ from those at the leading power. Finally, we calculate the rapidity anomalous dimension for the dynamic sub-leading distributions and find that it is the same as the leading power anomalous dimension. We then comment on the implications for the soft function associated with this contribution. Using this information, we establish the factorization formalism at sub-leading power for these processes at the one-loop level.
Gluon fragmentation function in polarised $Λ$ hyperon production: The Method of Factorisation

Abstract:We discuss the polarised fragmentation functions of quarks and gluons in Perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. The Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations governing these fragmentation functions are presented. We find that the first moment of the polarised gluon fragmentation function to order $\alpha_s$ is as important as that of the quark and anti-quark fragmentation functions. The $\Lambda$ production in polarised $e^+ e^-$ annihilation where this can be realised is discussed. We propose the factorisation method to compute the gluonic contribution to $\Lambda$ production to order $\alpha_s$. With appropriate operator definitions for the quark and the gluon fragmentation functions, we find that the hard part of the factorisation formula is free of any infrared singularities confirming the factorisation.

Abstract:We demonstrate the QCD factorization for inclusive hadron production in $pA$ collisions in the saturation formalism at one-loop order, with explicit calculation of both real and virtual gluon radiation diagrams. The collinear divergences associated with the incoming parton distribution of the nucleon and the outgoing fragmentation function of the final state hadron, as well as the rapidity divergence with small-$x$ dipole gluon distribution of the nucleus are factorized into the splittings of the associated parton distribution and fragmentation functions and the energy evolution of the dipole gluon distribution function. The hard coefficient function is evaluated at one-loop order, and contains no divergence.

Abstract:We compare the relative importance of different mechanisms for polarized J/ψ production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes at large Q2 . The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework and nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics are used to study the leading contributions from light quark fragmentation to polarized J/ψ , and compared to direct production via photon-gluon fusion, which can proceed through color-singlet as well as color-octet mechanisms. Breakdown of collinear factorization in the exclusive photoproduction of a $ π^{0}γ$ pair with large invariant mass

Abstract:We study the exclusive photoproduction of a $ \pi ^{0}\gamma $ pair with large invariant mass $ M^{2}_{\gamma \pi} $, which is sensitive to the exchange of either two quarks or two gluons in the $ t $-channel. In this paper, we show that the process involving two-gluon exchanges does not factorize in the Bjorken limit at the leading twist. This can be explicitly demonstrated by the fact that there exist diagrams, which contribute at the leading twist, for which Glauber gluons are trapped, due to the pinching of the contour integration of both the plus and minus component of the Glauber gluon momentum. For the same reason, $\pi^0$-nucleon scattering to two photons also suffers from the same issue. On the other hand, we stress that there are no issues with respect to collinear factorization for the quark channels. By considering an analysis of all potential reduced diagrams of leading pinch-singular surfaces, we argue that the quark channel is safe from Glauber pinches, and therefore, a collinear factorization in that case follows through without any problems. This means that processes where gluon exchanges are forbidden, such as the exclusive photoproduction of $ \pi ^{\pm}\gamma $ and $ \rho^{0,\,\pm} \gamma $, are unaffected by the factorization breaking effects we point out in this paper.

Abstract:Differential measurements of the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process with polarized beams provide important information on the three-dimensional structure of hadrons. Among the various observables are azimuthal asymmetries that start at subleading power, and which give access to novel transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs). Theoretical predictions for these distributions are currently based on the parton model rather than a rigorous factorization based analysis. Working under the assumption that leading power Glauber interactions do not spoil factorization at this order, we use the Soft Collinear Effective Theory to derive a complete factorization formula for power suppressed hard scattering effects in SIDIS. This yields generalized definitions of the TMDs that depend on two longitudinal momentum fractions (one of them only relevant beyond tree level), and a complete proof that only the same leading power soft function appears and can be absorbed into the TMD distributions at this order. We also show that perturbative corrections can be accounted for with only one new hard coefficient. Factorization formulae are given for all spin dependent structure functions which start at next-to-leading power. Prospects for improved subleading power predictions that include resummation are discussed.

Factorization in Exclusive and Seminclusive Decays and Effective Theories for Massless Particles

Abstract:We prove rigorously factorization in the seminclusive decay $B\to D^{(*)} + jet$ using the large energy effective theory. It is also shown that this effective theory is unable to consistently describe completely exclusive processes, such as the decay $B\to D^{(*)}+\pi(\rho)$, and therefore also related properties such as factorization. This is due to an oversimplification of transverse momentum dynamics. We present a variant of the large energy effective theory, i.e. a new effective theory for massless particles, which properly takes into account transverse momentum dynamics and is therefore the natural framework to study exclusive non-leptonic decays. Finally, it is shown that the collinear instability of the large energy effective theory disappears when seminclusive observables are considered.

Abstract:I briefly summarize recent results for nucleon and [Formula: see text] electromagnetic, axial and transition form factors in the Dyson-Schwinger approach. The calculation of the current diagrams from the quark-gluon level enables a transparent discussion of common features such as: the implications of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and quark orbital angular momentum, the timelike structure of the form factors, and their interpretation in terms of missing pion-cloud effects.

Abstract:The main features and characteristics of the -factorization QCD approach, which is based on BFKL-like noncollinear gluon evolution equations, are outlined. One of the advantages of this approach is connected with a convenience of including a significant part of higher order perturbative QCD corrections. The explicit expression and solutions of some parton distribution evolution equations in the leading logarithmic approximation are presented. Frequently used in calculations gluon and quark distribution functions, which depend on the transverse momenta of the initial interacting particles, are shown. Various techniques to calculate the off-shell amplitudes of parton subprocesses are discussed. The application of the -factorization approach to some QCD processes that are intensively studied in modern experiments at the LHC is considered, in particular, to processes of the single and double production of heavy quarks, as well as the inclusive and associated (correlated with one or two hadronic jets) production of direct photons (or heavy gauge boson) in proton collisions at high energies. A comparison of the obtained results with predictions made using the standard (collinear) approach in the next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD is presented. Basic capabilities and features of modern Monte-Carlo event generators PEGASUS, CASCADE and KATIE are also discussed.

Abstract:We present a factorization theorem of the partonic Drell-Yan off-diagonal processes $g\bar{q}\,(qg) \to \gamma^* + X$ in the kinematic threshold regime $z=Q^2/\hat{s} \to 1$ at general subleading powers in the $(1-z)$ expansion. Focusing on the first order of the expansion (next-to-leading power accuracy with respect to the leading power $q \bar{q}$ channel), we validate the bare factorization formula up to $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^2_s)$. This is achieved by carrying out an explicit calculation of the generalized soft function in $d$-dimensions using the reduction to master integrals and the differential equations method. The collinear function is a universal object which we compute from an operator matching equation at one-loop level. Next, we integrate the soft and collinear functions over the convolution variables and remove the remaining initial state collinear singularities through PDF renormalization. The resulting expression agrees with the known cross section in the literature.
