Abstract:The paper considers a symbolic approach to Prony's method in several variables and its close connection to multivariate polynomial interpolation. Based on the concept of universal interpolation that can be seen as a weak generalization of univariate Chebychev systems, we can give estimates on the minimal number of evaluations needed to solve Prony's problem.

Abstract:We show that Prony's method provides the full solution to the nonlinear equations of the connected--moments expansion (CMX). Knowledge of all the parameters in the CMX ansatz is useful for the analysis of the convergence properties of the approach. Prony's method is also suitable for the calculation of the correlation function for simple quantum--mechanical models.

Abstract:We start a systematic study of the topology, geometry and singularities of the Prony varieties $S_q(\mu)$, defined by the first $q+1$ equations of the classical Prony system $$\sum_{j=1}^d a_j x_j^k = \mu_k, \ k= 0,1,\ldots \ .$$ Prony varieties, being a generalization of the Vandermonde varieties, introduced in [5,21], present a significant independent mathematical interest (compare [5,19,21]). The importance of Prony varieties in the study of the error amplification patterns in solving Prony system was shown in [1-4,19]. In [19] a survey of these results was given, from the point of view of Singularity Theory. In the present paper we show that for $q\ge d$ the variety $S_q(\mu)$ is diffeomerphic to an intersection of a certain affine subspace in the space ${\cal V}_d$ of polynomials of degree $d$, with the hyperbolic set $H_d$. On the Prony curves $S_{2d-2}$ we study the behavior of the amplitudes $a_j$ as the nodes $x_j$ collide, and the nodes escape to infinity. We discuss the behavior of the Prony varieties as the right hand side $\mu$ varies, and possible connections of this problem with J. Mather's result in [23] on smoothness of solutions in families of linear systems.

Abstract:We show that the classical Prony's method for recovery of a sparse signal from its consecutive Fourier coefficients can be viewed as a spectral identification problem for an unknown restriction of a known linear operator. This presents a unified point of view on various existing and novel generalizations and applications of the method, some of which are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Eigenvalue analysis based methods are well suited for the reconstruction of finitely supported measures from their moments up to a certain degree. We give a precise description when Prony's method succeeds in terms of an interpolation condition. In particular, this allows for the unique reconstruction of a measure from its trigonometric moments whenever its support is separated and also for the reconstruction of a measure on the unit sphere from its moments with respect to spherical harmonics. Both results hold in arbitrary dimensions and also yield a certificate for popular semidefinite relaxations of these reconstruction problems.

Abstract:Sparse multivariate polynomial interpolation is an effective strategy to reconstruct black box functions by using the sparse structure of polynomials and the given interpolation point information, which is widely used in science and engineering fields. The complexity of the traditional sparse interpolation algorithm based on Prony method is related to the number and degree of polynomial terms, and the efficiency is low when en-countering large-scale problems due to the execution of multiple high-order algebraic operations. Therefore, this paper proposes a sparse multivariate polynomial interpolation algorithm based on polynomial coefficient parsing. The core operation is to resolve the coefficients of univariate polynomials by using modular arithmetic, which avoids the solution of higher-order equations and finding the roots of higher order equation in the traditional method. In this method, black box polynomial is regarded as a univariate polynomial with one variable as the principal component, and the multivariate polynomial is recovered by parsing the values of the coefficient polynomials of the principal component at different interpolation point. Theoretical analysis and numerical experiments show that the algorithm is effective and feasible.

Abstract:We extend the close interplay between continued fractions, orthogonal polynomials, and Gaussian quadrature rules to several variables in a special but natural setting which we characterize in terms of moment sequences. The crucial condition for the characterization is the commutativity of the multiplication operators on finite polynomial subspaces modulo an ideal. Moreover, starting from the orthogonal polynomials or the three-term recurrence, our method constructs a sequence of moment sequences that provides an approximation of the maximal order for recovering the moment sequence that defines the orthogonality.

Optimization-Aided Construction of Multivariate Chebyshev Polynomials

Abstract:This article is concerned with an extension of univariate Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind to the multivariate setting, where one chases best approximants to specific monomials by polynomials of lower degree relative to the uniform norm. Exploiting the Moment-SOS hierarchy, we devise a versatile semidefinite-programming-based procedure to compute such best approximants, as well as associated signatures. Applying this procedure in three variables leads to the values of best approximation errors for all monomials up to degree six on the euclidean ball, the simplex, and the cross-polytope. Furthermore, inspired by numerical experiments, we obtain explicit expressions for Chebyshev polynomials in two cases unresolved before, namely for the monomial $x_1^2 x_2^2 x_3$ on the euclidean ball and for the monomial $x_1^2 x_2 x_3$ on the simplex.

Algorithm for Optimization and Interpolation based on Hyponormality

Abstract:On one hand, consider the problem of finding global solutions to a polynomial optimization problem and, on the other hand, consider the problem of interpolating a set of points with a complex exponential function. This paper proposes a single algorithm to address both problems. It draws on the notion of hyponormality in operator theory. Concerning optimization, it seems to be the first algorithm that is capable of extracting global solutions from a polynomial optimization problem where the variables and data are complex numbers. It also applies to real polynomial optimization, a special case of complex polynomial optimization, and thus extends the work of Henrion and Lasserre implemented in GloptiPoly. Concerning interpolation, the algorithm provides an alternative to Prony's method based on the Autonne-Takagi factorization and it avoids solving a Vandermonde system. The algorithm and its proof are based exclusively on linear algebra. They are devoid of notions from algebraic geometry, contrary to existing methods for interpolation. The algorithm is tested on a series of examples, each illustrating a different facet of the approach. One of the examples demonstrates that hyponormality can be enforced numerically to strenghten a convex relaxation and to force its solution to have rank one.

Abstract:We study (inhomogeneous) approximation for systems of linear forms using integer points which satisfy additional primitivity constraints. The first family of primitivity constraints we consider were introduced in 2015 by Dani, Laurent, and Nogueira, and are associated to partitions of the coordinate directions. Our results in this setting strengthen a theorem of Dani, Laurent, and Nogueira, and address problems posed by those same authors. The second primitivity constraints we consider are analogues of the coprimality required in the higher-dimensional Duffin–Schaeffer conjecture, posed by Sprindžuk in the 1970s and proved by Pollington and Vaughan in 1990. Here, with attention restricted to systems of linear forms in at least three variables, we prove a univariate inhomogeneous version of the Duffin–Schaeffer conjecture for systems of linear forms, the multivariate homogeneous version of which was stated by Beresnevich, Bernik, Dodson, and Velani in 2009 and recently proved by the second author.

The comparison is made using a set of conditions of Hermite–Birkhoff type. Algorithms for these approaches are also presented. We prove that the interpolation space for these conditions is the set of polynomials of degree n in 2 variables.

Abstract:We provide an overview of some results on the "geometry of error amplification" in solving Prony system, in situations where the nodes near-collide. It turns out to be governed by the "Prony foliations" $S_q$, whose leaves are "equi-moment surfaces" in the parameter space. Next, we prove some new results concerning explicit parametrization of the Prony leaves.

Abstract:We give a revised version of Schmidt's treatment of forms in many variables, which allows us to prove a Hasse principle under more lenient conditions on the number of variables than what had previously been thought possible with these methods. Our results are generally comparable with recent advances in the field and supersede them in a number of cases.

Abstract:<p>We derive the Hasse principle and weak approximation for fibrations of certain varieties in the spirit of work by Colliot-Thélène–Sansuc and Harpaz–Skorobogatov–Wittenberg. Our varieties are defined through polynomials in many variables and part of our work is devoted to establishing Schinzel's hypothesis for polynomials of this kind. This last part is achieved by using arguments behind Birch's well-known result regarding the Hasse principle for complete intersections with the notable difference that we prove our result in 50% fewer variables than in the classical Birch setting. We also study the problem of square-free values of an integer polynomial with 66.6% fewer variables than in the Birch setting.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, we study functional approximations where we choose the so-called radial basis function method and more specifically, quasi-interpolation. From the various available approaches to the latter, we form new quasi-Lagrange functions when the orders of the singularities of the radial function's Fourier transforms at zero do not match the parity of the dimension of the space, and therefore new expansions and coefficients are needed to overcome this problem. We develop explicit constructions of infinite Fourier expansions that provide these coefficients and make an extensive comparison of the approximation qualities and - with a particular focus - polynomial reproduction and uniform approximation order of the various formulae. One of the interesting observations concerns the link between algebraic conditions of expansion coefficients and analytic properties of localness and convergence.

Abstract:The subject of this book is Lagrange, Hermite and Birkhoff (lacunary Hermite) interpolation by multivariate algebraic polynomials. It unifies and extends a new algorithmic approach to this subject which was introduced and developed by G.G. Lorentz and the author. One particularly interesting feature of this algorithmic approach is that it obviates the necessity of finding a formula for the Vandermonde determinant of a multivariate interpolation in order to determine its regularity (which formulas are practically unknown anyways) by determining the regularity through simple geometric manipulations in the Euclidean space. Although interpolation is a classical problem, it is surprising how little is known about its basic properties in the multivariate case. The book therefore starts by exploring its fundamental properties and its limitations. The main part of the book is devoted to a complete and detailed elaboration of the new technique. A chapter with an extensive selection of finite elements follows as well as a chapter with formulas for Vandermonde determinants. Finally, the technique is applied to non-standard interpolations. The book is principally oriented to specialists in the field. However, since all the proofs are presented in full detail and since examples are profuse, a wider audience with a basic knowledge of analysis and linear algebra will draw profit from it. Indeed, the fundamental nature of multivariate nature of multivariate interpolation is reflected by the fact that readers coming from the disparate fields of algebraic geometry (singularities of surfaces), of finite elements and of CAGD will also all find useful information here.

Computing Μ-Bases of Univariate Polynomial Matrices Using Polynomial Matrix Factorization.

Abstract:This paper extends the notion of μ -bases to arbitrary univariate polynomial matrices and present an efficient algorithm to compute a μ -basis for a univariate polynomial matrix based on polynomial matrix factorization. Particularly, when applied to polynomial vectors, the algorithm computes a μ -basis of a rational space curve in arbitrary dimension. The authors perform theoretical complexity analysis in this situation and show that the computational complexity of the algorithm is O( dn^4 + d^2n^3) , where n is the dimension of the polynomial vector and d is the maximum degree of the polynomials in the vector. In general, the algorithm is n times faster than Song and Goldman’s method, and is more efficient than Hoon Hong’s method when d is relatively large with respect to n . Especially, for computing μ -bases of planar rational curves, the algorithm is among the two fastest algorithms.

Abstract:Prony mapping provides the global solution of the Prony system of equations \[ \Sigma_{i=1}^{n}A_{i}x_{i}^{k}=m_{k},\ k=0,1,...,2n-1. \] This system appears in numerous theoretical and applied problems arising in Signal Reconstruction. The simplest example is the problem of reconstruction of linear combination of $\delta$-functions of the form $g(x)=\sum_{i=1}^{n}a_{i}\delta(x-x_{i})$, with the unknown parameters $a_{i},\ x_{i},\ i=1,...,n,$ from the "moment measurements" $m_{k}=\int x^{k}g(x)dx.$ Global solution of the Prony system, i.e. inversion of the Prony mapping, encounters several types of singularities. One of the most important ones is a collision of some of the points $x_{i}.$ The investigation of this type of singularities has been started in \cite{yom2009Singularities} where the role of finite differences was demonstrated. In the present paper we study this and other types of singularities of the Prony mapping, and describe its global geometry. We show, in particular, close connections of the Prony mapping with the "Vieta mapping" expressing the coefficients of a polynomial through its roots, and with hyperbolic polynomials and "Vandermonde mapping" studied by V. Arnold.
