Abstract:The Horndeski theory gives the most general model of scalar-tensor theories. It draws a lot of attentions in recent years on its black holes, celestial dynamics, stability analysis, etc. It is important to notice that, for certain subclasses of Horndeski models, one can obtain analytic solutions to the background fields. This provides us with a good opportunity to investigate the corresponding stability problems in details. Specially, we may find out the constraints to the model or theory, under which the stability conditions can be satisfied. In this paper, we focus on a subclass of the Horndeski theory and a set of analytic background solutions are considered. On top of that, the odd-parity gravitational perturbation and the 2nd-order Lagrangian are investigated. With careful analysis, the instability is identified within the neighborhood of the event horizon. We are thus able to exclude a specific geometry for the model. It is interesting to notice that, such an instability is implanted in the structure of the corresponding Lagrangian, and will not be erased by simply adding numerical constraints on the coupling parameters. As a starting point of our research, this current work provides insights into further exploration of Horndeski theories.

Abstract:We study hairy black hole solutions in Einstein(--Maxwell)--scalar--Gauss--Bonnet theory. The scalar coupling function includes quadratic and quartic terms, so the gravitational action has a U(1) symmetry. We argued that when the effective mass of the scalar field is at the critical value, the non-hairy black holes transform into hairy black holes in a symmetry-broken vacuum via spontaneous symmetry breaking. These hairy black holes are stable under scalar perturbations, and the Goldstone bosons are trivial. Moreover, we found that the spontaneous symmetry breaking associated with local U(1) is unlikely to occur in this theory.

Dynamic instability analysis for bumblebee black holes: the odd parity

Abstract:Spherical black-hole (BH) solutions have been found in the bumblebee gravity where a vector field nonminimally couples to the Ricci tensor. We study dynamic (in)stability associated with the gravitational and vector perturbations of odd parity against these bumblebee BHs. Under the plane-wave approximation, we find that bumblebee BHs do not suffer ghost instability, but gradient instability and tachyonic instability exist when the bumblebee charge exceeds certain values. The existence of the instabilities also depends on the nonminimal coupling constant $\xi$ that, there is a minimal value $\xi \sim 4\pi G$ with $G$ the gravitational constant for the instabilities to happen. The theoretical consideration for bumblebee BH stability turns out to place stronger constraints on the parameter space than those from the recent observations of supermassive BH shadows by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration. It is also reminiscent of Penrose's cosmic censorship conjecture since the charge of bumblebee BHs cannot be too large due to the dynamic instabilities. Specifically, for $\xi(\xi-16\pi G) > 0$, we find that the charge of a bumblebee BH cannot be larger than its mass.

Scalar Field Perturbation of Hairy Black Holes in EsGB theory

Abstract:We investigate scalar field perturbations of the hairy black holes involved with spontaneous symmetry breaking of the global U(1) symmetry in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory for asymptotically flat spacetimes. We consider the mechanism that black holes without hairs become unstable at the critical point of the coupling constant and undergo a phase transition to hairy black holes in the symmetry-broken phase driven by spontaneous symmetry breaking. This transition occurs near the black hole horizon due to the diminishing influence of the Gauss-Bonnet term at infinity. To examine such process, we introduce a scalar field perturbation on the newly formed background spacetime. We solve the linearized perturbation equation using Green's function method. We begin by solving the Green's function, incorporating the branch cut contribution. This allows us to analytically investigate the late-time behavior of the perturbation at both spatial and null infinity. We found that the late-time behavior only differs from the Schwarzschild black hole by a mass term. We then proceed to calculate the quasinormal modes (QNMs) numerically, which arise from the presence of poles in the Green's function. Our primary interest lies in utilizing QNMs to investigate the stability of the black hole solutions both the symmetric and symmetry-broken phases. Consistent with the prior study, our analysis shows that hairy black holes in the symmetric phase become unstable when the quadratic coupling constant exceeds a critical value for a fixed value of the quartic coupling constant. In contrast, hairy black holes in the symmetry-broken phase are always stable at the critical value. These numerical results provide strong evidence for a dynamical process that unstable black holes without hairs transition into stable hairy black holes in the symmetry-broken phase through the spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Scalar Hairy Black Holes with Inverted Mexican Hat Potential

Abstract:We numerically construct the asymptotically flat solutions of hairy black holes supported by a symmetric inverted Mexican hat potential with a local minimum and two degenerate global maxima of a real scalar field that contains a quartic self-interaction term. The solutions of hairy black holes emerge from the Schwarzschild black hole when the non-trivial scalar field exists outside the event horizon. Therefore, we perform a comprehensive study on the properties of the hairy black holes such as the area of horizon, the Hawking temperature, the innermost stable circular orbit, the photon sphere, etc. We also numerically study their linear stability in the mode analysis, hence finding that they are unstable against the linear perturbation.

Linear stability of vector Horndeski black holes

Abstract:Horndeski's vector-tensor (HVT) gravity is described by a Lagrangian in which the field strength $F_{\mu \nu}=\partial_{\mu} A_{\nu}-\partial_{\nu} A_{\mu}$ of a vector field $A_{\mu}$ interacts with a double dual Riemann tensor $L^{\mu \nu \alpha \beta}$ in the form $\beta L^{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} F_{\mu \nu} F_{\alpha \beta}$, where $\beta$ is a constant. In Einstein-Maxwell-HVT theory, there are static and spherically symmetric black hole (BH) solutions with electric or magnetic charges, whose metric components are modified from those in the Reissner-Nordström geometry. The electric-magnetic duality of solutions is broken even at the background level by the nonvanishing coupling constant $\beta$. We compute a second-order action of BH perturbations containing both the odd- and even-parity modes and show that there are four dynamical perturbations arising from the gravitational and vector-field sectors. We derive all the linear stability conditions associated with the absence of ghosts and radial/angular Laplacian instabilities for both the electric and magnetic BHs. These conditions exhibit the difference between the electrically and magnetically charged cases by reflecting the breaking of electric-magnetic duality at the level of perturbations. In particular, the four angular propagation speeds in the large-multipole limit are different from each other for both the electric and magnetic BHs. This suggests the breaking of eikonal correspondence between the peak position of at least one of the potentials of dynamical perturbations and the radius of photon sphere. For the electrically and magnetically charged cases, we elucidate parameter spaces of the HVT coupling and the BH charge in which the BHs without naked singularities are linearly stable.

Stability of Schwarzshild black holes in quadratic gravity with Weyl curvature domination

Abstract:We study the linear stability of static and spherically symmetric (SSS) black holes (BHs) in the presence of a Weyl-squared curvature besides an Einstein-Hilbert term in the action. In this theory, there is always an exact Schwarzschild BH irrespective of the Weyl coupling constant $\alpha$, with the appearance of a non-Schwarzschild solution for a particular range of the coupling of order $|\alpha| \approx r_h^2$ (where $r_h$ is the horizon radius). On the SSS background, we show that the propagating degrees of freedom (DOFs) are three in the odd-parity sector and four in the even-parity sector. Since the number of total seven DOFs coincides with those on the Minkowski and isotropic cosmological backgrounds, the Weyl gravity does not pose a strong coupling problem associated with the vanishing kinetic term of dynamical perturbations. The odd-parity perturbations possess at least one ghost mode, but the propagation speeds of all three dynamical modes are luminal. In the even-parity sector, our analysis, based on the WKB approximation, shows that, besides the appearance of at least one ghost mode, the Schwarzschild solution is prone to both radial and angular Laplacian instabilities of several dynamical perturbations for the Weyl coupling in the range $|\alpha| \gg r_h^2$. For large radial and angular momentum modes, the time scales of such instabilities are much shorter than the horizon distance $r_h$ divided by the speed of light. In the coupling regime $|\alpha |\lesssim r_h^2$, the WKB approximation does not hold any longer, and a different analysis should be performed if one wants to state the stability of both the Schwarzschild and non-Schwarzschild BH solutions in this range of model parameters.

(H)airborne: two spinning black holes balanced by their synchronised scalar hair

Abstract:General Relativity minimally coupled to a massive, free, complex scalar field, is shown to allow asymptotically flat solutions, non-singular on and outside the event horizon, describing two spinning black holes (2sBHs) in equilibrium, with co-axial, aligned angular momenta. The 2sBHs configurations bifurcate from solutions describing dipolar spinning boson stars. The BHs emerge at equilibrium points diagnosed by a test particle analysis and illustrated by a Newtonian analogue. The individual BH "charges" are mass and angular momentum only. Equilibrium is due to the scalar environment, acting as a (compact) dipolar field, providing a lift against their mutual attraction, making the 2sBHs (h)airborne. We explore the 2sBHs domain of solutions and its main features.

Scrutinizing black hole stability in cubic vector Galileon theories

Abstract:In a subclass of generalized Proca theories where a cubic vector Galileon term breaks the $U(1)$ gauge invariance, it is known that there are static and spherically symmetric black hole (BH) solutions endowed with nonvanishing temporal and longitudinal vector components. Such hairy BHs are present for a vanishing vector-field mass ($m=0$) with a non-zero cubic Galileon coupling $\beta_3$. We study the linear stability of those hairy BHs by considering even-parity perturbations in the eikonal limit. In the angular direction, we show that one of the three dynamical perturbations has a nontrivial squared propagation speed $c_{\Omega,1}^2$, while the other two dynamical modes are luminal. We could detect two different unstable behaviors of perturbations in all the parameter spaces of hairy asymptotically flat BH solutions we searched for. In the first case, an angular Laplacian instability on the horizon is induced by negative $c_{\Omega,1}^2$. For the second case, it is possible to avoid this horizon instability, but in such cases, the positivity of $c_{\Omega,1}^2$ is violated at large distances. Hence these hairy BHs are generally prone to Laplacian instabilities along the angular direction in some regions outside the horizon. Moreover, we also encounter a pathological behavior of the radial propagation speeds $c_r$ possessing two different values of $c_r^2$ for one of the dynamical perturbations. Introducing the vector-field mass $m$ to cubic vector Galileons, however, we show that the resulting no-hair Schwarzschild BH solution satisfies all the linear stability conditions in the small-scale limit, with luminal propagation speeds of three dynamical even-parity perturbations.

Axial perturbations of black holes in scalar-tensor gravity: near-horizon behaviour

Abstract:We consider axial (or odd-parity) perturbations of non-spinning hairy black holes (BH) in shift-symmetric DHOST (Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor) theories, including terms quartic and cubic in second derivatives of the scalar field. We give a new formulation of the effective metric in which axial perturbations propagate as in general relativity. We then introduce a generic parametrization of the effective metric in the vicinity of the background BH horizon. Writing the dynamics of the perturbations in terms of a Schrödinger-like operator, we discuss in which cases the operator is (essentially) self-adjoint, thus leading to an unambiguous time evolution, according to the choice of parameters characterizing the near-horizon effective metric. This is in particular useful to investigate the stability of the perturbations. We finally illustrate our general analysis with two examples of BH solutions.

On black holes with scalar hairs

Abstract:By using the Taylor series and the solution-generating methods, we construct exact black hole solutions with minimally coupled scalar fields. We find that the black hole solutions can have many hairs except for the physical mass. These hairs come from the scalar potential. Different from the mass, there is no symmetry corresponding to these hairs. Thus they are not conserved and one cannot understand them as Noether charges. They arise as coupling constants. Although there are many hairs, the black hole has only one horizon. The scalar potential becomes negative for sufficient large (or in the vicinity of black hole singularity). Therefore, the no-scalar-hair theorem does not apply to our solutions since the latter do not obey the dominant energy condition. Although the scalar potential becomes negative for sufficient large , the black holes are stable to both odd parity and scalar perturbations. As for even parity perturbations, we find there remains parameter space for the stability of the black holes. Finally, the black hole thermodynamics is developed.

Abstract:In Einstein-Aether theories with a timelike unit vector field, we study the linear stability of static and spherically symmetric black holes against both even- and odd-parity perturbations. For this purpose, we formulate a gauge-invariant black hole perturbation theory in the background Aether-orthogonal frame where the spacelike property of hypersurfaces orthogonal to the timelike Aether field is always maintained even inside the metric horizon. Using a short-wavelength approximation with large radial and angular momenta, we show that, in general, there are three dynamical degrees of freedom arising from the even-parity sector besides two propagating degrees of freedom present in the odd-parity sector. The propagation speeds of even-parity perturbations and their no-ghost conditions coincide with those of tensor, vector, and scalar perturbations on the Minkowski background, while the odd sector contains tensor and vector modes with the same propagation speeds as those in the even-parity sector (and hence as those on the Minkowski background). Thus, the consistent study of black hole perturbations in the Aether-orthogonal frame on static and spherically symmetric backgrounds does not add new small-scale stability conditions to those known for the Minkowski background in the literature.

Abstract:In Einstein-Aether gravity, we revisit the issue of linear stabilities of black holes against odd-parity perturbations on a static and spherically symmetric background. In this theory, superluminal propagation is allowed and there is a preferred timelike direction along the unit Aether vector field. If we choose the usual spherically symmetric background coordinates with respect to the Killing time $t$ and the areal radius $r$, it may not be appropriate for unambiguously determining the black hole stability because the constant $t$ hypersurfaces are not necessarily always spacelike. Unlike past related works of black hole perturbations, we choose an Aether-orthogonal frame in which the timelike Aether field is orthogonal to spacelike hypersurfaces over the whole background spacetime. In the short wavelength limit, we show that no-ghost conditions as well as radial and angular propagation speeds coincide with those of vector and tensor perturbations on the Minkowski background. Thus, the odd-parity linear stability of black holes for large radial and angular momentum modes is solely determined by constant coefficients of the Aether derivative couplings.
