Abstract:We characterise the elements of the (maximum) idempotent generated subsemigroup of the Kauffman monoid in terms of combinatorial data associated to certain normal forms. We also calculate the smallest size of a generating set and idempotent generating set.

This quantity equals either or , where n is the cardinality of the poset. The two cases are separated in terms of the embedding of the Hasse diagram of the poset into the complement of the hypercube graph.

Abstract:We extend the definition of a one-sided identity and a one-sided zero with respect to an entire set with a binary operation to subsets of a set with a binary operation. Given a set $S$ with a binary operation and a subset $A$ of $S$, $lidentity(A)$ is the set of all $b \in S$ such that $ba=a$ for all $a \in A$. There is a similar definition for $ridentity(A)$. Also given a set $S$ with a binary operation and a subset $A$ of $S$, $lzero(A)$ is the set of all $b \in S$ such that $ba=b$ for all $a \in A$. There is a similar definition for $rzero(A)$. In any semigroup or groupoid, every one-sided identity or zero is an idempotent, and every idempotent is a one-sided identity or zero for some subsemigroup or subgroupoid. In particular, every one-sided identity or zero of a maximal subsemigroup of a specific type is an idempotent, and every idempotent is a one-sided identity or zero for some maximal subsemigroup of a specific type. These types include groups, left [right] zero semigroups, and left [right] groups. It has been shown that every idempotent of a semigroup is the identity of a maximal subgroup of that semigroup. We show that every idempotent of a semigroup exists in a maximal left [right] zero subsemigroup. For each idempotent of a semigroup, we describe all rectangular band subsemigroups containing that idempotent. We also show that every idempotent of a semigroup exists in a maximal right [left] subgroup.

Abstract:Studying ceratin combinatorial properties of non-unique factorizations have been a subject of recent literatures. Little is known about two combinatorial invariants, namely the catenary degree and the tame degree, even in the case of numerical monoids. In this paper we compute these invariants for a certain class of numerical monoids generated by generalized arithmetic sequences. We also show that the difference between the tame degree and the catenary degree can be arbitrary large even if the number of minimal generators is fixed.

Abstract:Let k≥2 be an integer. If a square 0-1 matrix A satisfies Ak=A, then A is said to be k-idempotent. In this paper, we give a characterization of k-idempotent 0-1 matrices. We also determine the maximum number of nonzero entries in k-idempotent 0-1 matrices of a given order as well as the k-idempotent 0-1 matrices attaining this maximum number.

Abstract:We provide a general criterion to deduce maximal amenability of von Neumann subalgebras $L\Lambda \subset L\Gamma$ arising from amenable subgroups $\Lambda$ of discrete countable groups $\Gamma$. The criterion is expressed in terms of $\Lambda$-invariant measures on some compact $\Gamma$-space. The strategy of proof is different from S. Popa's approach to maximal amenability via central sequences [Po83], and relies on elementary computations in a crossed-product C*-algebra.

Abstract:If the Krull dimension of the semigroup ring is greater than one, then affine semigroups of maximal projective dimension ( ) are not Cohen–Macaulay, but they may be Buchsbaum. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for simplicial -semigroups to be Buchsbaum in terms of pseudo-Frobenius elements. We give certain characterizations of -almost symmetric -semigroups. When the cone is full, we prove the irreducible -semigroups, and -almost symmetric -semigroups with Betti-type three satisfy the extended Wilf conjecture. For , we give a class of MPD-semigroups in such that there is no upper bound on the Betti-type in terms of embedding dimension e . Thus, the Betti-type may not be a bounded function of the embedding dimension. We further explore the submonoids of , which satisfy the Arf property, and prove that Arf submonoids containing multiplicity are -monoids.

Abstract:Endowed with the binary operation of set addition, the family $\mathcal P_{{\rm fin},0}(\mathbb N)$ of all finite subsets of $\mathbb N$ containing $0$ forms a monoid, with the singleton $\{0\}$ as its neutral element. We show that the only non-trivial automorphism of $\mathcal P_{{\rm fin},0}(\mathbb N)$ is the involution $X \mapsto \max X - X$. The proof leverages ideas from additive number theory and proceeds through an unconventional induction on what we call the boxing dimension of a finite set of integers, that is, the smallest number of (discrete) intervals whose union is the set itself.

In this paper, we determine the maximal subsemigroups as well as the maximal idempotent generated subsemigroups of Dn . Abstract:We study idempotent measures and the structure of the convolution semigroups of measures over definable groups. We isolate the property of generic transitivity and demonstrate that it is sufficient (and necessary) to develop stable group theory localizing on a generically stable type, including invariant stratified ranks and connected components. We establish generic transitivity of generically stable idempotent types in important new cases, including abelian groups in arbitrary theories and arbitrary groups in rosy theories, and characterize them as generics of connected type-definable subgroups. Using tools from Keisler's randomization theory, we generalize some of these results from types to generically stable Keisler measures, and classify idempotent generically stable measures in abelian groups as (unique) translation-invariant measures on type-definable fsg subgroups. This provides a partial definable counterpart to the classical work of Rudin, Cohen and Pym for locally compact topological groups. Finally, we provide an explicit construction of a minimal left ideal in the convolution semigroup of measures for an arbitrary countable NIP group, from a minimal left ideal in the corresponding semigroup on types and a canonical measure constructed on its ideal subgroup. In order to achieve it, we in particular prove the revised Ellis group conjecture of Newelski for countable NIP groups.

Abstract:If $G$ is a nilpotent group and $[G,G]$ has Hirsch length $1$, then every f.g. submonoid of $G$ is boundedly generated, i.e. a product of cyclic submonoids. Using a reduction of Bodart, this implies the decidability of the submonoid membership problem for nilpotent groups $G$ where $[G,G]$ has Hirsch length $2$.

Abstract:An element e of an ordered semigroup $(S,\cdot,\leq)$ is called an ordered idempotent if $e\leq e^2$. We call an ordered semigroup $S$ idempotent ordered semigroup if every element of $S$ is an ordered idempotent. Every idempotent semigroup is a complete semilattice of rectangular idempotent semigroups and in this way we arrive to many other important classes of idempotent ordered semigroups.
Maximal subgroups of finitely presented special inverse monoids

Abstract:We study the maximal subgroups (also known as group $\mathcal{H}$-classes) of finitely presented special inverse monoids. We show that the maximal subgroups which can arise in such monoids are exactly the recursively presented groups, and moreover every such maximal subgroup can also arise in the $E$-unitary case. We also prove that the possible groups of units are exactly the finitely generated recursively presented groups; this improves upon a result of, and answers a question of, the first author and Ruškuc. These results give the first significant insight into the maximal subgroups of such monoids beyond the group of units, and the results together demonstrate that it is possible for the subgroup structure to have a complexity which significantly exceeds that of the group of units. We also observe that a finitely presented special inverse monoid (even an $E$-unitary one) may have infinitely many pairwise non-isomorphic maximal subgroups.

Abstract:Let 𝔛 be a class of finite groups closed under taking subgroups, homomorphic images, and extensions. Following H. Wielandt, we call a subgroup H of a finite group G a submaximal 𝔛-subgroup if there exists an isomorpic embedding ϕ: G ↪ G* of the group G into some finite group G* under which Gϕ is subnormal in G* and Hϕ = K ∩Gϕ for some maximal 𝔛-subgroup K of G*. We discuss the following question formulated by Wielandt: Is it always the case that all submaximal 𝔛-subgroups are conjugate in a finite group G in which all maximal 𝔛-subgroups are conjugate? This question strengthens Wielandt’s known problem of closedness for the class of Open image in new window -groups under extensions, which was solved some time ago. We prove that it is sufficient to answer the question mentioned for the case where G is a simple group.

Abstract:We give a short new proof of the Arendt-Chernoff-Kato theorem, which characterizes generators of positive C0 semigroups in order unit spaces. The proof avoids half-norms and subdifferentials, and is based on a sufficient condition for an operator to have positive inverse, which is new even for matrices.

Abstract:The monoid of all partial injections on a finite set (the symmetric inverse semigroup) is of particular interest because of the well-known Wagner-Preston Theorem. In this article, we step forward the study of a submonoid of the symmetric inverse semigroup. We explore the monoid of all order-, fence-, and parity-preserving transformations on an $n$-element chain. We also characterize the transformations in that monoid and show that it has a rank $3n-6$. In particular, we provide a generating set $A_n$ of minimal size and exhibit concrete normal forms for the transformations generated by $A_n$.

Congruences of maximum regular subsemigroups of variants of finite full transformation semigroups

Abstract:Let $T_X$ be the full transformation monoid over a finite set $X$, and fix some $a\in T_X$ of rank $r$. The variant $T_X^a$ has underlying set $T_X$, and operation $f\star g=fag$. We study the congruences of the subsemigroup $P=Reg(T_X^a)$ consisting of all regular elements of $T_X^a$, and the lattice $Cong(P)$ of all such congruences. Our main structure theorem ultimately decomposes $Cong(P)$ as a specific subdirect product of $Cong(T_r)$ and the full equivalence relation lattices of certain combinatorial systems of subsets and partitions. We use this to give an explicit classification of the congruences themselves, and we also give a formula for the height of the lattice.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite semigroup, and let $E(\mathcal{S})$ be the set of all idempotents of $\mathcal{S}$. Gillam, Hall and Williams proved in 1972 that every $\mathcal{S}$-valued sequence $T$ of length at least $|\mathcal{S}|-|E(\mathcal{S})|+1$ is not (strongly) idempotent-product free, in the sense that it contains a nonempty subsequence the product of whose terms, in their natural order in $T$, is an idempotent, which affirmed a question of Erdős. They also showed that the value $|\mathcal{S}|-|E(\mathcal{S})|+1$ is best possible. Here, motivated by Gillam, Hall and Williams' work, we determine the structure of the idempotent-product free sequences of length $|\mathcal{S}\setminus E(\mathcal{S})|$ when the semigroup $\mathcal{S}$ (not necessarily finite) satisfies $|\mathcal{S}\setminus E(\mathcal{S})|$ is finite, and we introduce a couple of structural constants for semigroups that reduce to the classical Davenport constant in the case of finite abelian groups.

A saturation theorem for submonoids of nilpotent groups and the Identity Problem

Abstract:If $M$ is a submonoid of a finitely generated nilpotent group $G$, and $MG'$ is a finite index subgroup of $G$, then $M$ itself is a finite index subgroup of $G$. If $MG'=G$, then $M=G$. This generalizes a well-known theorem for subgroups of finitely generated nilpotent groups. As a result, we give an algorithm for the Identity Problem in nilpotent groups.

Abstract:A formula for the rank of an arbitrary finite completely 0-simple semigroup, represented as a Rees matrix semigroup ℳ0[G; I, Λ; P], is given. The result generalizes that of Ruškuc concerning the rank of connected finite completely 0-simple semigroups. The rank is expressed in terms of |I|, |Λ|, the number of connected components k of P, and a number r min, which we define. We go on to show that the number r min is expressible in terms of a family of subgroups of G, the members of which are in one-to-one correspondence with, and determined by the nonzero entries of, the components of P. A number of applications are given, including a generalization of a result of Gomes and Howie concerning the rank of an arbitrary Brandt semigroup B(G,{1,…,n}).
