Abstract:This paper proposes a pilot-assisted sampling frequency offset (SFO) estimation algorithm for MIMO OFDM (multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) systems. The sampling frequency offset is estimated from phase errors in the received pilot subcarrier symbols between two transmitted OFDM blocks. The optimal weight for each SFO estimate is derived. The proposed weighted method is remarkably superior to the unweighted method, and the receive diversity exploited by the proposed method can significantly reduce the MSE (mean square error) of the SFO estimator. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately estimate the SFO in both AWGN channels and multipath fading channels. © 2008 IEEE.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel method of symbol duration estimation for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM) signals. This method exploits the cyclostationarity of OFDM signals and estimates the symbol duration by maximizing a sum of modulus squares of cyclic correlation estimates in the cyclic domain. The computer simulation has been carried out and good performance has been obtained when the SNR is above 4dB.

Abstract:A novel carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation algorithm based on the maximum-likelihood (ML) criterion for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is proposed. In the proposed method, a well-known preamble with excellent timing synchronization is modified, and based on the improved preamble three fractional frequency offset estimators are investigated. The estimation range and the mean-square-error (MSE) performance under various signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) of the estimators are discussed. Finally, our proposed estimators are compared with the traditional Schmidl (SC) algorithm in terms of MSE. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed methods have better performance than the SC frequency offset estimation algorithm in AWGN and multipath fading channels without increasing complexity. Moreover, the special characteristics of the improved preamble lead to a superior timing performance.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel algorithm for residual phase estimation in wireless OFDM systems, including the carrier frequency offset (CFO) and the sampling frequency offset (SFO). The subcarriers are partitioned into several regions which exhibit pairwise correlations. The phase increment between successive OFDM blocks is exploited which can be estimated by two estimators with different computational loads. Numerical results of estimation variance are presented. Simulations indicate performance improvement of the proposed technique over several conventional schemes in a multipath channel.

Abstract:In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, most of the conventional sampling frequency offset (SFO) estimation methods work under the assumption of time-invariant or slow time-variant channels. In mobile environment, the time-variant channel significantly degrades the accuracy of SFO estimation. To solve the problem, we first analyze the properties of time-variant channels. If terminal moves within some tens of the wavelength of radio frequency (RF) signal, channel path delay almost remains unchanged. For most practical OFDM systems, our analysis indicates that channel path delay can be regarded as unchanged during the interval of some tens of OFDM symbols in time-variant channels. Based on the analysis, we propose a novel SFO estimation method for pilot-aided OFDM systems. Different from the conventional methods, the proposed method estimates SFO by detecting the variation of the symbol timing error caused by SFO. The detection is finished by implementing correlation between the channel impulse responses (CIRs) estimated by different OFDM symbols. Performance of the proposed method is simulated and compared with that of two conventional post-FFT methods. Numerical results show that, the proposed SFO estimation method performs better than the conventional methods not only in time-variant channels, but also at low SNRs and large residual carrier frequency offsets (CFOs).

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation was shown to provide significant error performance advantages over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in delay--Doppler channels. In order to detect OTFS modulated data, the channel impulse response needs to be known at the receiver. In this paper, we propose embedded pilot-aided channel estimation schemes for OTFS. In each OTFS frame, we arrange pilot, guard, and data symbols in the delay--Doppler plane to suitably avoid interference between pilot and data symbols at the receiver. We develop such symbol arrangements for OTFS over multipath channels with integer and fractional Doppler shifts, respectively. At the receiver, channel estimation is performed based on a threshold method and the estimated channel information is used for data detection via a message passing (MP) algorithm. Thanks to our specific embedded symbol arrangements, both channel estimation and data detection are performed within the same OTFS frame with a minimum overhead. We compare by simulations the error performance of OTFS using the proposed channel estimation and OTFS with ideally known channel information and observe only a marginal performance loss. We also demonstrate that the proposed channel estimation in OTFS significantly outperforms OFDM with known channel information. Finally, we present extensions of the proposed schemes to MIMO and multi-user uplink/downlink.

Abstract:On the basis of coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (CO-OFDM), CO-OFDM/offset quadrature amplitude modulation (CO-OFDM/OQAM) improves the spectrum efficiency by utilizing specially designed filter banks to eliminate the cyclic prefix (CP) inserted between consecutive OFDM blocks and decreases the demanding of guard band between two channels, being a promising candidate for the next generation optical transmission link. Due to the relaxation of the orthogonal condition from the complex field to the real field, chromatic Dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) bring serious intrinsic imaginary interference (IMI) to an optical OFDM/OQAM system. Channel estimation schemes based on the interference approximation method (IAM) have been proved to be effective in suppressing the IMI with low complexity. For the IAMs, increasing the power of the pseudo pilot could decrease the effects of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise and other frequency domain residual error on the channel estimation accuracy. In most of the previous reported IAM works, pilot blocks were designed according to the structure of the center pilot block loaded, while the two side pilots nulled for simplicity. However, the power of the pseudo pilot under this method did not reach the maximum, resulting in non-optimal channel estimation accuracy. In this paper, channel estimation method based on the combined phase offset (CMPO) is proposed and systematically discussed. For the proposed method, three consecutive full loaded blocks are treated as the pilot blocks and the optimal pilot structure have been obtained by utilizing the maximum likelihood algorithm. As validated by numerous Montel Carlo simulations results, system robustness against IMI, phase noised induced interference, and nonlinear effect have been improved significantly, thanks to CMPO.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has been proven to be superior to traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in high-speed communication scenarios. However, the existing channel estimation schemes may results in poor peak to average power ratio (PAPR) performance of OTFS system or low spectrum efficiency. Hence, in this paper, we propose a low PAPR channel estimation scheme with high spectrum efficiency. Specifically, we design a multiple scattered pilot pattern, where multiple low power pilot symbols are superimposed with data symbols in delay-Doppler domain. Furthermore, we propose the placement rules for pilot symbols, which can guarantee the low PAPR. Moreover, the data aided iterative channel estimation was invoked, where joint channel estimation is proposed by exploiting multiple independent received signals instead of only one received signal in the existing scheme, which can mitigate the interference imposed by data symbols for channel estimation. Simulation results shows that the proposed multiple scattered pilot aided channel estimation scheme can significantly reduce the PAPR while keeping the high spectrum efficiency.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally investigate a training-aided iterative frequency offset estimation (IFOE) method, which can track dynamic frequency offset (FO) drift in coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems. In contrast to existing FO estimation algorithms that compute specific FO values, in IFOE, only the sign value of FO is judged and recorded without any phase calculation. The estimated FO is updated once for every data block based on FO signs obtained from multiple previous blocks, which helps combat noise and allows the shortening of the employed training symbol. We experimentally investigate the performance of IFOE in a 160-km CO-OFDM system. The results show that IFOE achieves superior bit error rate performance to a one-time FO estimator (without FO tracking) and approaches the performance of multiple separate FO estimators that use longer training symbols.
Channel Estimation of Rapidly Time-Varying Channels for OFDM Systems

Abstract:In Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems, how to estimate rapidly time-varying channels exactly is a challenge issue. In this paper, relying on a basis expansion channel model, a channel estimation scheme of rapidly time-varying channels is proposed for OFDM systems. Along with the channel estimation scheme, the optimal pilot sequence and optimal placement of the pilot tones are also derived with respect to the mean square error (MSE) of the channel estimate. It is shown that the optimal pilot sequence consists of some adjacent equipowered and equispaced subsequences, and each of them is constrained by certain phase conditions. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation scheme in rapidly time-varying scenarios and the superiority of using the derived optimal pilot sequences.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel carrier frequency offset (CFO) tracking algorithm for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems by exploiting scattered pilot carriers and virtual carriers embedded in the existing OFDM standards. Assuming that the channel remains constant during two consecutive OFDM blocks and perfect timing, a CFO tracking algorithm is proposed using the limited number of pilot carriers in each OFDM block. Identifiability of this pilot based algorithm is fully discussed under the noise free environment, and a constellation rotation strategy is proposed to eliminate the c-ambiguity for arbitrary constellations. A weighted algorithm is then proposed by considering both scattered pilots and virtual carriers. We find that, the. pilots increase the performance accuracy of the algorithm, while the virtual carriers reduce the chance of CFO outlier. Therefore, the proposed tracking algorithm is able to achieve full range CFO estimation, can be used before channel estimation, and could provide improved performance compared to existing algorithms. The asymptotic mean square error (MSE) of the proposed algorithm is derived and simulation results agree with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:A low-complexity channel estimation method for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) systems is proposed.At the receiver,the power and phases of the pilots are designed based on the minimum mean-square error(MSE) criteria and the given pilot placement.At the receiver,the estimation of the channel impulse response is obtained by directly adding the received pilots and then multiplying the sum by a weighted factor.Since only a small number of complex multiplications are needed in the estimation,the computational complexity at the receiver is very low.Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that,when the channel is time-invariant or slowly time-varying,the method has a relatively small estimation MSE.

Abstract:In this article, a joint symbol timing offset (STO) and Doppler frequency offset (DFO) estimation algorithm is proposed for spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) system in the downlink of low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite communications. Considering the nonorthogonality of SEFDM, the proposed algorithm is derived by maximizing likelihood function. To reduce computation complexity of STO estimator, all unnecessary terms in likelihood function are ignored. Further, the proposed CFO estimator is simplified by replacing the inverse trigonometric function with polynomial approximation. According to relevant standards issued by the International Telecommunications Union and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, simulation parameters are set to evaluate the estimation performance. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is robust to different packing factors of SEFDM, and outperforms traditional estimation methods.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has been regarded as one of the most promising candidates to enhance communication reliability for emerging high-mobility applications, where channel estimation is a crucial component to exploit the performance superiority. Unfortunately, most prior estimators fail to work under extremely high mobility since the Doppler squint effect is ignored. Additionally, traditional schemes suffer from high pilot overhead due to the extensive guard symbols required to prevent interference between data and pilot symbols in the delay-Doppler domain. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel pilot pattern in the time-frequency domain, significantly improving the transmission efficiency. A multiple signal classification-based estimator is then developed to extract channel parameters. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed estimator.

Abstract:Carrier frequency offset estimation in Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA) system is a challenging task. In this paper, a novel estimation method based on the pilot signal in frequency domain is proposed. This algorithm does not require the knowledge of the channel, and only one pilot symbol is needed for frequency offset estimation. These promising features will facilitate its deployment in the current systems without changing the air-interface. A performance evaluation is conducted over Demodulation Reference Signal in Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access uplink SC-FDMA system. In frequency selective channels, it has the least estimation error among three benchmark methods in large CFO scenarios.
Improving Channel Estimation Performance for Uplink OTFS Transmissions: Pilot Design based on A Posteriori Cramer-Rao Bound

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) has been widely acknowledged as a promising wireless technology for challenging transmission scenarios, including high-mobility channels. In this paper, we investigate the pilot design for the multi-user OTFS system based on the a priori statistical channel state information (CSI), where the practical threshold-based estimation scheme is adopted. Specifically, we first derive the a posteriori Cramer-Rao bound (PCRB) based on a priori channel information for each user. According to our derivation, the PCRB only relates to the user's pilot signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the range of delay and Doppler shifts under the practical power-delay and power-Doppler profiles. Then, a pilot scheme is proposed to minimize the average PCRB of different users, where a closed-form global optimal pilot power allocation is derived. Our numerical results verify the multi-user PCRB analysis. Also, we demonstrate an around 3 dB improvement in the average normalized-mean-square error (NMSE) by using the proposed pilot design in comparison to the conventional embedded pilot design under the same total pilot power.

Abstract:A joint Doppler frequency offset (DFO) and channel estimation (CE) scheme is presented for the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems under the high‐speed mobile environment. To reduce the impact of DFO on CE as much as possible, a high‐precision DFO estimator based on the convolutional neural network is given to estimate DFO. Due to its ability to use fewer samples to adapt well to the new environments, the meta learning is adopted to obtain time‐varying channel state information. To improve the practicality of the algorithm, the non‐ideal values rather than ideal values are used as the training targets in the two networks. To reduce the impact of residual Doppler frequency offset (RDFO), a joint DFO estimation and CE scheme is proposed for the OFDM systems under the high‐speed mobile environment. In the paper, the expression of interference power caused by the RDFO is first derived, and the effect of RDFO on time‐varying characteristic of channel is analysed. Then, a joint DFO and channel estimation scheme is presented. Specifically, a high‐precision DFO estimator based on the convolutional neural network with anti‐noise is firstly designed. Due to its ability to use fewer samples to adapt well to the new environments, the meta learning is adopted to estimate the time‐varying channel. Moreover, to improve the practicality of the algorithm, the non‐ideal values rather than ideal values are used as the training targets in the two neural networks. Additionally, the proposed method is only based on the received signal and does not require any pilots or training sequences, which has higher transmission efficiency compared to the existing algorithms. The research results indicate that the proposed method has good estimation performance and good practicality, and it is suitable for high‐speed mobile scenarios.

Abstract:In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based cognitive radio (CR) systems, the subcarriers used by the licensed users (LUs) have to be deactivated to avoid interference. Thus only part of subcarriers can be used for transmission and the positions of the activated subcarriers may be non-contiguous. The conventional pilot design methods are no longer effective for such systems. In this paper, we propose a new practical pilot design method for OFDM-based CR systems. We first formulate the pilot design as a new optimization problem, where a simple objective function related to the mean-square error (MSE) of the least-squares (LS) channel estimation method is minimized. We then propose an efficient scheme to solve the optimization problem. Specifically, the pilot tones are obtained sequentially by solving some one-dimensional optimization problems. Only real additions are needed in the proposed scheme. The simulation results show that the pilot sequence obtained by the proposed method exhibits better performance than those obtained by existing pilot design methods.
