Abstract:We present leading hadron suppression predictions in $Pb+Pb$ and $p+Pb$ collisions from a convolved radiative and collisional energy loss model in which partons propagate through a realistic background, and in which the radiative energy loss receives a short pathlength correction. We find that the short pathlength correction is small for $D$ meson $R_{AA}(p_T)$ in both $Pb+Pb$ and $p+Pb$ collisions. However the short pathlength correction leads to a surprisingly large reduction in suppression for $\pi$ mesons in $p+Pb$ and even $Pb+Pb$ collisions, providing a qualitative explanation for the rapid rise in $\pi$ meson $R_{AA}(p_T)$ at the LHC. We find that the size of the short pathlength correction to $R_{AA}(p_T)$ is acutely sensitive to the chosen distribution of scattering centers in the plasma. Furthermore we find that conventional elastic energy loss models, which apply the central limit theorem to the number of scatterings, dramatically overpredict suppression in $\mathrm{p}+\mathrm{A}$ collisions, calling for short pathlength corrections to elastic energy loss.

Abstract:We argue that in the measured $p_T$ domain of RHIC, collisional rather than the radiative energy loss is the dominant mechanism for jet quenching. Accordingly we calculate nuclear suppression factor for light hadrons by taking only the elastic energy loss in sharp contrast with the previous calculations where only the radiative loss are considered.

Abstract:The effects of energy loss in cold nuclear matter on J/psi suppression in p-A collisions are studied. A simple model based on first principles and depending on a single free parameter is able to reproduce J/psi suppression data at large xF and at various center-of-mass energies. These results strongly support energy loss as a dominant effect in quarkonium suppression. They also give some hint on its hadroproduction mechanism suggesting color neutralization to happen on long time-scales. Predictions for J/psi and Upsilon suppression in p-Pb collisions at the LHC are made.

Abstract:We present first results for leading hadron suppression in small collision systems, from a convolved radiative and collisional pQCD energy loss model which receives a short path length correction to the radiative energy loss. We find that the short path length correction is exceptionally large for light flavor final states in both small and large collision systems, due to the disproportionate size of the correction for gluons. We examine various assumptions underlying the energy loss model through the calculation of energy loss weighted expectation values of ratios assumed small by the various assumptions. This calculation shows that the large formation time assumption, which is utilized by most contemporary energy loss models, is invalid for a large portion of the phenomenologically relevant parameter space.

Abstract:We calculate exclusive J/ψ photoproduction at high energies in the color glass condensate approach. The results are compared to the center-of-mass energy dependent γ+A→J/ψ+A cross sections extracted from measurements in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. We predict strong saturation-driven nuclear suppression at high energies, while LHC data prefer even stronger suppression. Abstract:We present an energy loss model which includes small system size corrections to both the radiative and elastic energy loss. Our model is used to compute the nuclear modification factor $R_{AB}$ of light and heavy flavor hadrons, averaged over realistic collision geometries for central and peripheral $A+A$ and central $p / d / {}^3\text{He} + A$ collisions at LHC and RHIC. We find that the predicted suppression in small systems is almost entirely due to elastic energy loss. Our results are keenly sensitive to the crossover between elastic energy loss calculated with Hard Thermal Loop propagators and vacuum propagators, respectively, which leads to a large theoretical uncertainty. We find that the $R_{AB}$ is largely insensitive to the form of the elastic energy loss distribution - Gaussian or Poisson - surprisingly so in small systems where the central limit theorem is inapplicable. We present an expansion of the $R_{AB}$ in terms of the moments of the energy loss probability distribution, which allows for a rigorous understanding of the dependence of the $R_{AB}$ on the underlying energy loss distribution.

Abstract:We present suppression results for high-$p_T$ $D$ and $\pi$ mesons produced in $p / d + A$ and $A+A$ collisions at RHIC and LHC. These results are computed using a convolved elastic and radiative energy loss model, which receives small system size corrections to both the elastic and radiative energy loss. We observe that suppression in small systems is almost entirely due to elastic energy loss; furthermore, we find that our model is acutely sensitive to the transition between hard thermal loop and vacuum propagators in the elastic energy loss. Finally, we consider the central limit theorem approximation, which is commonly used to model the elastic energy loss distribution as Gaussian.

Abstract:We construct a theoretical framework to describe the evolution of heavy flavors produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The in-medium energy loss of heavy quarks is described using our modified Langevin equation that incorporates both quasi-elastic scatterings and the medium-induced gluon radiation. The space-time profiles of the fireball is described by a (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics simulation. A hybrid model of fragmentation and coalescence is utilized for heavy quark hadronization, after which the produced heavy mesons together with the soft hadrons produced from the bulk QGP are fed into the hadron cascade UrQMD model to simulate the subsequent hadronic interactions. We find that the medium-induced gluon radiation contributes significantly to heavy quark energy loss at high $p_\mathrm{T}$; heavy-light quark coalescence enhances heavy meson production at intermediate $p_\mathrm{T}$; and scatterings inside the hadron gas further suppress the $D$ meson $R_\mathrm{AA}$ at large $p_\mathrm{T}$ and enhance its $v_2$. Our calculations provide good descriptions of heavy meson suppression and elliptic flow observed at both the LHC and RHIC.

Initial-state cold nuclear matter energy loss effects on inclusive jet production in p+A collisions at RHIC and LHC

Abstract:Recent measurements of the centrality and rapidity dependence of single inclusive jet production in p+Pb collisions at the LHC have revealed large and non-trivial nuclear modification of the production cross section for this process. In this paper, we explore to what extent such nuclear modification can be understood by the framework of standard cold nuclear matter effects, in particular initial-state cold nuclear matter energy loss. We demonstrate quantitatively that theoretical calculations which include medium-induced radiative corrections can describe rather reasonably the attenuation of the jet production yields in the large transverse momentum region in d+Au collisions at RHIC and p+Pb collisions at the LHC for central to semi-central collisions. We further show that the observed scaling behavior of the nuclear modification factor as a function of the total jet energy $p_T\, {\cosh} (y)$ for various rapidity intervals has a natural explanation in the picture of cold nuclear matter energy loss. On the other hand, the observed enhancement in peripheral collisions is not described in this picture and could have a different origin.

We systematically check the consistency of the assumptions used in the radiative energy loss derivation - such as collinearity, softness, and large formation time - with the final numerical model. While collinearity and softness are self-consistently satisfied in the final numerics, we find that the large formation time approximation breaks down at modest to high momenta $p_T \gtrsim 30$ GeV. We find that both the size of the small pathlength correction to $R_{AA}(p_T)$ and the $p_T$ at which the large formation time assumption breaks down are acutely sensitive to the chosen distribution of scattering centers in the plasma.

Abstract:Collisions of small systems at RHIC exhibit a significant suppression of the nuclear modification factor $R_{xA}$ of jets and high momentum neutral pions in events with large event activity. This suppression is accompanied by an enhancement of $R_{xA}$ in events with low event activity. Since event activity is commonly interpreted as a measure of the centrality of the collisions, these results call into question any interpretation of the suppression in central collisions that invokes energy loss in a QGP produced small systems. In this talk, we will compare prompt photon to $\pi^0$ production measured by PHENIX in d+Au collision at $\sqrt{s}=200\,GeV$ to demonstrate that the apparent centrality dependence is not related to a nuclear modification of hard scattering processes, but likely due to deviations from the proportionality of event activity and centrality in the underlying standard Glauber model calculations. Furthermore, we will use prompt photon production in d+Au relative to p+p collisions to empirically determine the effective number of binary collisions $N_{coll}$ of a given event sample. We find that for all event selections, except for those with the highest event activity, $R_{xA}$ of $\pi^0$ is consistent with unity. By comparing p+Au and d+Au collisions, we will investigate the significance of the remaining suppression of high $p_{T}$ $\pi^0$ production in events with high event activity.

Abstract:The data for (p(t)(2))(E-t) of J/psi produced in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN-SPS contain information about when anomalous suppression is active. A general transport equation which describes transverse motion of J/psi in the absorptive medium is proposed and solved for a QGP and a comover scenario of suppression. While inconsistencies appear in the QGP, the comover approach accounts for the data fairly well. For central collisions the bulk of anomalous suppression happens rather late, 3-4 fm/c after the nuclear overlap.

Abstract:Nuclear modification factors R-cp of protons and pions are investigated by simulating Au+Au collisions from 0.8A to 1.8A GeV in a framework of an isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model. The Rcp of protons rise with an increase in the transverse particle momentum pT at different beam energies owing to radial flow and the multiple-collision effect. The rate of increase of Rcp is suppressed at higher beam energies. While the Rcp of pions display weaker pT dependence. By changing the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section, the Rcp of protons change a lot, while the Rcp of pions do not. In addition, by deactivating the N Delta -> NN and pi N -> Delta channels, the Rcp of protons change slightly in their increasing rates compared with the "original" case (with these two channels). However, the Rcp of pions is shifted down for the "no N Delta -> NN" case and has an inverse trend for the "no pi N -> Delta" case. Based on these observations, we argue that the observable Rcp is a suitable tool to better distinguish in-medium effects of protons and pions.
A unified approach for nucleon knock-out, coherent and incoherent pion production in neutrino interactions with nuclei

Abstract:We present a theory of neutrino interactions with nuclei aimed at the description of the partial cross-sections, namely quasi-elastic and multi-nucleon emission, coherent and incoherent single pion production. For this purpose, we use the theory of nuclear responses treated in the random phase approximation, which allows a unified description of these channels. It is particularly suited for the coherent pion production where collective effects are important whereas they are moderate in the other channels. We also study the evolution of the neutrino cross-sections with the mass number from carbon to calcium. We compare our approach to the available neutrino experimental data on carbon. We put a particular emphasis on the multi-nucleon channel, which at present is not easily distinguishable from the quasi-elastic events. This component turns out to be quite relevant for the interpretation of experiments (K2K, MiniBooNE, SciBooNE). It can account in particular for the unexpected behavior of the quasi-elastic cross-section.

Abstract:We explore how nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distributions affect production of high-$p_T$ hadrons in heavy ion collisions. We perform a leading order calculation of the high-$p_T$ charged pion, kaon and proton spectra using standard fragmentation functions and shadowing parameterizations. We also consider alternate models of shadowing. Near midrapidity, shadowing is a small effect and cannot explain the large observed suppression of high-$p_T$ hadrons. We also consider the isospin difference between protons and nuclei and find that it is also a small effect on high-$p_T$ hadron production.
Quenching of high-pT hadrons: a non-energy-loss scenario

Abstract:A parton produced with a high transverse momentum in a hard collision is regenerating its color field, intensively radiating gluons and losing energy. This process cannot last long, if it ends up with production of a leading hadron carrying the main fraction z_h of the initial parton momentum. So energy conservation imposes severe constraints on the length scale of production of a single hadron with high pT. As a result, the main reason for hadron quenching observed in heavy ion collisions, is not energy loss, but attenuation of the produced colorless dipole in the created dense medium. The latter mechanism, calculated with the path-integral method, explains well the observed suppression of light hadrons and the elliptic flow in a wide range of energies, from the lowest energy of RHIC up to LHC, and in a wide range of transverse momenta. The values of the transport coefficient extracted from data range within 1-2 GeV^2/fm, dependent on energy, and agree well with the theoretical expectations.

Abstract:The nuclear stopping and the radial flow are investigated with an isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model for Ni+Ni and Pb+Pb from 0.4 to and 1.2 GeV/u. The expansion velocity as well as the degree of nuclear stopping are higher in the heavier system at all energies. The ratio between the flow energy and the total available energy in center of mass of the colliding systems exhibits a positive correlation to the degree of nuclear stopping. The maximum density (ρmax) achieved in the compression is comparable to the hydrodynamics prediction only if the non-zero collision time effect is taken into account in the later. Due to the partial transparency, the growing of the maximum density achieved in the central region of the fireball with the increase of beam energy becomes gradually flat in the 1 GeV/u energy regime.

Abstract:We investigate the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects on isolated prompt photon and isolated prompt photon associated jet productions in nuclear collisions at the NLO accuracy by using the EPS09 NLO nuclear parton distribution functions and their error sets. Nuclear modification factors of isolated prompt photon and isolated prompt photon+jet productions due to CNM effects in p+A and A+A reactions at the RHIC and the LHC are provided with varying rapidity and transverse momentum of the final state photon. It is shown that the CNM effects on isolated prompt photon and photon+jet are modest, which give a small enhancement at low pT region and a more obvious suppression at large pT at central rapidity. At forward rapidity a pronounced suppression of γ as well as γ+jet is always observed.

Abstract:Recent progress of the quantum molecular dynamics model for describing the dynamics of heavy-ion collisions is viewed, in particular the nuclear fragmentation, isospin physics, particle production and in-medium effect, hadron-induced nuclear reactions, hypernucleus etc. The neck fragmentation in Fermi-energy heavy-ion collisions is investigated for extracting the symmetry energy at subsaturation densities. The isospin effects, in-medium properties and the behavior of high-density symmetry energy in medium and high energy heavy-ion collisions are thoroughly discussed. The hypernuclide dynamics formed in heavy-ion collisions and in hadron induced reactions is analyzed and addressed in the future experiments at the High-Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF).
