Abstract:Consider the following variational inclusion problem: where f is differentiable in a neighbourhood of a solution and g is differentiable at , and F is a set-valued mapping, and the method introduced in Jean-Alexis and Pietrus [C. Jean-Alexis and A. Pietrus, On the convergence of some methods for variational inclusions, Rev. R. Acad. Cien. serie A. Mat. 102(2) (2008), pp. 355–361] for solving this problem: where ∇f(x) denotes the Fréchet derivative of f at x and [x, y; g] the first-order divided difference of g on the points x and y. Local converge analysis are provided for the method under the weaker conditions than Jean-Alexis and Pietrus (2008). Moreover, if ∇f and the first-order divided difference of g are p-Hölder continuous at a solution, then we show that this method converges superlinearly. In particular, our results extend the corresponding ones Jean-Alexis and Pietrus (2008), and fix a gap in the proof in (Jean-Alexis and Pietrus (2008), Theorem 1).

Abstract:This review paper collects several results that form part of the theoretical foundation of isogeometric methods. We analyse variational techniques for the numerical resolution of PDEs based on splines or NURBS and we provide optimal approximation and error estimates in several cases of interest. The theory presented also includes estimates for T-splines, which are an extension of splines allowing for local refinement. In particular, we focus our attention on elliptic and saddle point problems, and we define spline edge and face elements. Our theoretical results are demonstrated by a rich set of numerical examples. Finally, we discuss implementation and efficiency together with preconditioning issues for the final linear system.

Set-Valued and Variational Analysis

Abstract:Existence results for a Cauchy problem driven by a semilinear differential Sturm-Liouville inclusion are achived by proving, in a preliminary way, an existence theorem for a suitable integral inclusion. In order to obtain this proposition we use a recent fixed point theorem that allows us to work with the weak topology and the De Blasi measure of weak noncompactness. So we avoid requests of compactness on the multivalued terms. Then, by requiring different properties on the map p involved in the Sturm-Liouville inclusion, we are able to establish the existence of both mild solutions and strong ones for the problem examinated. Moreover we focus our attention on the study of controllability for a Cauchy problem governed by a suitable Sturm-Liouville equation. Finally we precise that our results are able to study problems involving a more general version of a semilinear differential Sturm-Liouville inclusion.

Abstract:This paper focuses on a system of differential inclusions expressing hemivariational inequalities driven by competing operators constructed with p-Laplacians that involve two real parameters. The existence of a generalized solution is shown by means of an approximation process through approximate solutions in finite dimensional spaces. When the parameters are negative, the generalized solutions become weak solutions. The main novelty of this work is the solvability of systems of differential inclusions for which the ellipticity condition may fail.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop the Galerkin-like method to address first-order integro-differential inclusions. Under compactness or monotonicity conditions, we obtain new results for the existence of solutions for this class of problems, which generalize existing results in the literature and provide new insights for differential inclusions with an unbounded right-hand side. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated by presenting new existence results for nonconvex state-dependent Volterra sweeping processes, where the right-hand side is unbounded, and the classical theory of differential inclusions is not applicable. This is the first result of its kind. The paper concludes with an application to the existence of an optimal control problem governed by nonconvex state-dependent Volterra sweeping processes in finite dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate an evolution problem (SDQHVI) which constitutes of the second order differential inclusion driven by a quasi-variational–hemivariational inequality (QHVI) with perturbation operator in Banach spaces. Unlike the existing literature on differential inclusions, on the one hand, the second order differential operator is not assumed to be compact; on the other hand, the solvability of the inequality is proved under non-coercive condition. More precisely, first, it is shown that the solution set of the QHVI with perturbation operator is nonempty, bounded, closed and convex under the KKM theorem and the Minty formulation. Then, an associated multivalued map with the solution set of the QHVI with perturbation operator is introduced, and we prove that it is upper semicontinuous and measurable. Finally, by utilizing Kakutani–Fan–Glicksberg fixed point theorem, a weak topology technique and properties of strong continuous cosine operators, we prove the existence of mild solutions for SDQHVI.

On some global implicit function theorems for set-valued inclusions with applications to parametric vector optimization

Abstract:The present paper deals with the perturbation analysis of set-valued inclusion problems, a problem format whose relevance has recently emerged in such contexts as robust and vector optimization as well as in vector equilibrium theory. The set-valued inclusions here considered are parameterized by variables belonging to a topological space, with and without constraints. By proper techniques of variational analysis, some qualitative global implicit function theorems are established, which ensure global solvability of these problems and continuous dependence on the parameter of the related solutions. Applications to parametric vector optimization are discussed, aimed at deriving sufficient conditions for the existence of ideal efficient solutions that depend continuously on the parameter perturbations.

Abstract:In this present paper, we introduce and study a dynamical systems involving fractional derivative operator and nonlocal condition, which is constituted of a fractional evolution equation and a time-dependent variational inequality, and is named as fractional partial differential variational inequality (FPDVI, for short). By employing the estimates involving the one-and two-parameter Mittag-Leffler functions, fixed-point theory for set-value mappings, and non-compactness measure theory, we develop a general framework to establish the existence of smooth solutions to (FPDVI).

The critical variational setting for stochastic evolution equations

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the critical variational setting for parabolic stochastic evolution equations of quasi- or semi-linear type. Our results improve many of the abstract results in the classical variational setting. In particular, we are able to replace the usual weak or local monotonicity condition by a more flexible local Lipschitz condition. Moreover, the usual growth conditions on the multiplicative noise are weakened considerably. Our new setting provides general conditions under which local and global existence and uniqueness hold. In addition, we prove continuous dependence on the initial data. We show that many classical SPDEs, which could not be covered by the classical variational setting, do fit in the critical variational setting. In particular, this is the case for the Cahn-Hilliard equation, tamed Navier-Stokes equations, and Allen-Cahn equation.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore various equivalences of Ekeland's variational principle within the framework of group-invariant mappings. We introduce and analyze several key theorems, including the Drop theorem, the Petal theorem, Caristi-Kirk fxed-point theorem, and Takahashi's theorem, all of them within this context. Moreover, we extend the classical Drop theorem and Petal theorem to a more generalized setting. We also demonstrate the practical signifcance of these findings through numerous applications to diverse areas of mathematics. In particular, in the context of partial differential equations, we explore their implications on the solution of the Plateau problem, and in control theory. We also extend the classical Pontyargin maximum principle.

On non-locality in the Calculus of Variations

Abstract:Non-locality is being intensively studied in various PDE-contexts and in variational problems. The numerical approximation also looks challenging, as well as the application of these models to Continuum Mechanics and Image Analysis, among other areas. Even though there is a growing body of deep and fundamental knowledge about non-locality, for variational principles there are still very basic questions that have not been addressed so far. Taking some of these as a motivation, we describe a general perspective on distinct classes of non-local variational principles setting a program for the analysis of this kind of problems. We start such program with the simplest problem possible: that of scalar, uni-dimensional cases, under a particular class of non-locality. Even in this simple initial scenario, one finds quite unexpected facts to the point that our intuition about local, classic problems can no longer guide us for these new problems. There are three main issues worth highlighting, in the particular situation treated: $\bullet$ natural underlying spaces involve different non-local types of derivatives as, for instance, fractional Sobolev spaces; $\bullet$ no convexity of integrands is required for existence of minimizers; $\bullet$ optimality is formulated in terms of quite special integral equations rather than differential equations. We are thus able to provide some specific answers to the initial questions that motivated our investigation. In subsequent papers, we will move on to consider the higher dimensional situation driven by the possibility that no convexity or quasiconvexity might be involved in weak lower semicontinuity in a full vector, higher dimensional situation.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying a system of coupled nonlinear first order history-dependent evolution inclusions in the framework of evolution triples of spaces. The multivalued terms are of the Clarke subgradient or of the convex subdifferential form. Using a surjectivity result for multivalued maps and a fixed point argument for a history-dependent operator, we prove that the system has a unique solution. We conclude with two examples of an evolutionary differential variational-hemivariational inequality and of a dynamic frictional contact problem in mechanics, which illustrate the abstract results.

Abstract:Mathematical methods based on the variational approach are successfully used in a broad range of applications, especially those fields that are oriented on partial differential equations. Our problem area addresses a wide class of nonlinear variational problems described by all kinds of static and evolution equations, inverse and ill-posed problems, non-smooth and non-convex optimization, and optimal control including shape and topology optimization. Within these directions, we focus but are not limited to singular and unilaterally constrained problems arising in mechanics and physics, which are governed by complex systems of generalized variational equations and inequalities. Whereas classical mathematical tools are not applicable here, we aim at a non-standard well-posedness analysis, numerical methods, asymptotic and approximation techniques including homogenization, which are successful within the primal as well as the dual variational formalism. In a broad scope, the theme issue objectives are directed toward advances that are attained in the mathematical theory of non-smooth variational problems, its physical consistency, numerical simulation and application to engineering sciences. This article is part of the theme issue 'Non-smooth variational problems and applications'.

Set-Valued and Variational Analysis

Abstract:The aim of the present paper is to state and discuss the well-posedness of a new evolution inclusion governed by the subdifferential of a function perturbed both by a Carathéodory mapping and by an integral forcing term. The integrand of the forcing term depends on two time-variables. We prove the existence and uniqueness of local and global solution, assuming that is primal lower regular and the perturbation terms satisfy some standard conditions. The results are applied to the study of non-regular electrical circuits with tranmission line, Zener diode and inductor. A second application is concerned with semilinear heat equation with memory. These applications illustrate an additional novelty of our paper.
