Abstract:In this paper, we obtain some new estimates for the trace and inverse trace of Steklov eigenvalues. The estimates generalize some previous results of Hersch-Payne-Schiffer , Brock}, Raulot-Savo and Dittmar.

Abstract:We prove Li-Yau-Kröger-type bounds for Neumann-type eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator on bounded domains in a Euclidean space. We also prove sharp estimates for lower order eigenvalues of a biharmonic Steklov problem and of the Laplacian, which directly implies two sharp Reilly-type inequalities for the corresponding first nonzero eigenvalue.

Abstract:In this paper, using a new correction to the Crouzeix-Raviart finite element eigenvalue approximations, we obtain asymptotic lower bounds of eigenvalues for the Steklov eigenvalue problem with variable coefficients on d-dimensional domains (d = 2, 3). In addition, we prove that the corrected eigenvalues converge to the exact ones from below. The new result removes the conditions of eigenfunction being singular and eigenvalue being large enough, which are usually required in the existing arguments about asymptotic lower bounds. Further, we prove that the corrected eigenvalues still maintain the same convergence order as uncorrected eigenvalues. Finally, numerical experiments validate our theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain monotonicity of Steklov eigenvalues on graphs which as a special case on trees extends the results of He and Hua (Steklov flows on trees and applications. arXiv:2103.07696) to higher Steklov eigenvalues and gives affirmative answers to two problems proposed in He and Hua (arXiv:2103.07696). As applications of the monotonicity of Steklov eigenvalues, we obtain some estimates for Steklov eigenvalues on trees generalizing the isodiametric estimate for the first positive Steklov eigenvalues on trees in He and Hua (Calc Var Partial Differ Equ 61(3):101, 2022. arXiv:2011.11014).

Abstract:In this paper, we study the discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the Steklov eigenvalue problem arising in inverse scattering. We present a complete error estimates including the a refined priori error estimate and the a posteriori error estimate, and prove the reliability and efficiency of the a posteriori error estimators for eigenfunctions up to higher order terms, and we also analyze the reliability of estimators for eigenvalues. Moreover, we carry out the numerical experiments in adaptive fashion which together with theoretical analysis show that our method reach the optimal convergence order.

Abstract:In this study, for the first time, we discuss the posteriori error estimates and adaptive algorithm for the non-self-adjoint Steklov eigenvalue problem in inverse scattering. The differential operator corresponding to this problem is non-self-adjoint and the associated weak formulation is not H 1-elliptic. Based on the study of Armentano et al. [Appl. Numer. Math. 58 (2008), 593–601], we first introduce error indicators for primal eigenfunction, dual eigenfunction, and eigenvalue. Second, we use Gårding’s inequality and duality technique to give the upper and lower bounds for energy norm of error of finite element eigenfunction, which shows that our indicators are reliable and efficient. Finally, we present numerical results to validate our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:We propose a multigrid correction scheme to solve a new Steklov eigenvalue problem in inverse scattering. With this scheme, solving an eigenvalue problem in a fine finite element space is reduced to solve a series of boundary value problems in fine finite element spaces and a series of eigenvalue problems in the coarsest finite element space. And the coefficient matrices associated with those linear systems are constructed to be symmetric and positive definite. We prove error estimates of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Numerical results coincide in theoretical analysis and indicate our scheme is highly efficient in solving the eigenvalue problem.

Abstract:We study the counting function of Steklov eigenvalues on compact manifolds with boundary and obtain its upper bound involving the leading term of Weyl's law. Our estimate can be viewed as a weakened version of Pólya's Conjecture in the Steklov case on general manifolds. As a byproduct, we also obtain a description about the decay behavior of Steklov eigenfunctions near the boundary.

Abstract:We consider the convergence problem of an inexact Cayley transform method for solving inverse eigenvalue problems with multiple eigenvalues. Under the nonsingularity assumption of the relative generalized Jacobian matrix at the solution c * ?> , a convergence analysis covering both the distinct and multiple eigenvalues cases is provided and the superlinear convergence is proved. Moreover, numerical experiments are given in the last section and comparisons with the Cayley transform method are made.

Abstract:In this paper we make a further discussion on the finite elements approximation for the Steklov eigenvalue problem on concave polygonal domain. We make full use of the regularity estimate and the characteristic of edge average interpolation operator of nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element, which is different from the existing proof argument, and prove a new and optimal error estimate in $\|\cdot\|_{0,\partial\Omega}$ for the eigenfunction of linear conforming finite element and the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element, which is an improvement of the current results. Finally, we present some numerical experiments to support the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Combining the correction technique proposed by Lin and Xie and the shifted inverse iteration, a multilevel correction scheme for the Steklov eigenvalue problem is proposed in this paper. The theoretical analysis and numerical experiments indicate that the scheme proposed in this paper is efficient for both simple and multiple eigenvalues of the Steklov eigenvalue problem.

Abstract:We first present a determinant inequality related to partial traces for positive semidefinite block matrices. Our result extends a result of Lin [Czech. Math. J. 66 (2016)] and improves a result of Kuai [Linear Multilinear Algebra 66 (2018)]. Moreover, we provide a unified treatment of a result of Ando [ILAS Conference (2014)] and a recent result of Li, Liu and Huang [Operators and Matrices 15 (2021)]. Furthermore, we also extend some determinant inequalities involving partial traces to a larger class of matrices whose numerical ranges are contained in a sector. In addition, some extensions on trace inequalities for positive semidefinite $2\times 2$ block matrices are also included.

Abstract:We prove a sharp upper bound and a lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Wentzell-Laplace operator on compact manifolds with boundary and an isoperimetric inequality for the same eigenvalue in the case where the manifold is a bounded domain in a Euclidean space. We study some fourth order Stekolv problems and obtain isoperimetric upper bound for the first eigenvalue of them. We also find all the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for two kind of fourth order Stekolv problems on a Euclidean ball.

Abstract:We study three types of fourth-order Steklov eigenvalue problems. For the first two of them, we derive the asymptotic expansion of their spectra on Euclidean annular domains $\mathbb{B}^n_1\setminus \overline{\mathbb{B}^n_\epsilon}$ as $\epsilon \to 0$, leading to conclusions on shape optimization. For these two problems, we also compute their spectra on cylinders over closed Riemannian manifolds. Last, for the third problem, we obtain a sharp upper bound for its first non-zero eigenvalue on star-shaped and mean convex Euclidean domains.

Abstract:Since the regulartiy of eigenfunction of Steklov eigenvalue problem is rather low, it brings great difficulty in studying the asymptotic expansion of Crouzeix-Raviart element eigenvalues. This paper explores the extrapolation rules of the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element for Steklov eigenvalue problem by numerical experiments of Mat lab programs. Numerical results show that the asymptotic expansion for numerical eigenvalues holds and the accuracy order of the approximate eigenvalue is improved by using the extrapolation.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the upper bounds for discrete Steklov eigenvalues on trees via geometric quantities. For a finite tree, we prove sharp upper bounds for the first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue by the reciprocal of the size of the boundary and the diameter respectively. We also prove similar estimates for higher order Steklov eigenvalues.

Abstract:This paper discusses the property of approximation from below by the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element for the Steklov eigenvalue problem. When Omega is concave and the eigenfunction is singular it is proved that the Crouzeix-Raviart element gives the lower bound of the exact eigenvalue on regular meshes, including adaptive meshes, when the mesh size is small enough. Finally the numerical experiments are provided to support the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:We provide in the present paper a corrected proof for the classical quadratical convergence theorem (i.e., Theorem 3.3 in Friedland, Nocedal, and Overton [SIAM T. Numer. Anal., 24 (1987), pp. 634-667]) of the Newton-like method for solving inverse eigenvalue problems with possible multiple eigenvalues. Moreover, as a by-product, our approach developed here can be extended to establish a similar convergence result for an inexact version of the Newton-like method with possible multiple eigenvalues, which is an extension of the corresponding inexact Newton-like method for the distinct case in Chan, Chung, and Xu [BIT Numer.
