Abstract:We study radial symmetric point defects with degree in the 2-D disk or R 2 in the Q -tensor framework with a singular bulk energy, which is defined by Bingham closure. First, we obtain the existence of solutions for the profiles of radial symmetric point defects with degree in the 2-D disk or R 2 . Then, we prove that the solution is stable for ∣ k ∣ = 1 and unstable for ∣ k ∣ > 1. Some identities are derived and utilized throughout the proof of existence and stability/instability.

Abstract:Defects in liquid crystals are of great practical importance and theoretical interest. Despite tremendous efforts, predicting the location and transition of defects under various topological constraint and external field remains to be a challenge. We investigate defect patterns of nematic liquid crystals confined in three-dimensional spherical droplet and two-dimensional disk under different boundary conditions, within the Landau-de Gennes model. We implement a spectral method that numerically solves the Landau-de Gennes model with high accuracy, which allows us to study the detailed static structure of defects. We observe five types of defect structures. Among them the 1/2-disclination lines are the most stable structure at low temperature. Inspired by numerical results, we obtain the profile of disclination lines analytically. Moreover, the connection and difference between defect patterns under the Landau-de Gennes model and the Oseen-Frank model are discussed. Finally, four conjectures are made to summarize some important characteristics of defects in the Landau-de Gennes theory. This work is a continuing effort to deepen our understanding on defect patterns in nematic liquid crystals.

Abstract:Guiding and dynamically modulating topological defects are critical challenges in defect engineering of liquid crystals. Here, we employ molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the transition dynamics and relative kinetic stability of defect patterns in two-dimensional nematic Gay–Berne liquid crystals confined within rectangular geometries. We observe the formation of various defect patterns including long-axis, diagonal, X-shaped, composite, and bend configurations under different confinement conditions. The competition between boundary effects and the uniformity of nematic orientation induces the continuous realignment of liquid crystal molecules, facilitating the spatially continuous transformation of defect patterns over time. This transition involves changes in both defect types and their locations, typically initiating from defect regions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the relative stability of these defect patterns can be effectively controlled by adjusting confinement parameters and external field conditions. Our findings provide fundamental insights into the transition kinetics of defect patterns in confined nematic liquid crystals, thereby enhancing our ability to manipulate topological defects for advanced applications.

Abstract:A two-dimensional or quasi-two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal refers to a surface-confined system. When such a system is further confined by external line boundaries or excluded from internal line boundaries, the nematic directors form a deformed texture that may display defect points or defect lines, for which winding numbers can be clearly defined. Here, a particular attention is paid to the case when the liquid crystal molecules prefer to form a boundary nematic texture in parallel to the wall surface (i.e., following the homogeneous boundary condition). A general theory, based on geometric argument, is presented for the relationship between the sum of all winding numbers in the system (the total winding number) and the type of confinement angles and curved segments. The conclusion is validated by comparing the theoretical defect rule with existing nematic textures observed experimentally and theoretically in recent years.
Curvature-driven stability of defects in nematic textures over spherical disks

Abstract:Stabilizing defects in liquid-crystal systems is crucial for many physical processes and applications ranging from functionalizing liquid-crystal textures to recently reported command of chaotic behaviors of active matters. In this work, we perform analytical calculations to study the curvature driven stability mechanism of defects based on the isotropic nematic disk model that is free of any topological constraint. We show that in a growing spherical disk covering a sphere the accumulation of curvature effect can prevent typical +1 and +1/2 defects from forming boojum textures where the defects are repelled to the boundary of the disk. Our calculations reveal that the movement of the equilibrium position of the +1 defect from the boundary to the center of the spherical disk occurs in a very narrow window of the disk area, exhibiting the first-order phase-transition-like behavior. For the pair of +1/2 defects by splitting a +1 defect, we find the curvature driven alternating repulsive and attractive interactions between the two defects. With the growth of the spherical disk these two defects tend to approach and finally recombine towards a +1 defect texture. The sensitive response of defects to curvature and the curvature driven stability mechanism demonstrated in this work in nematic disk systems may have implications towards versatile control and engineering of liquid crystal textures in various applications.

Abstract:We investigate the solution landscape of a reduced Landau--de Gennes model for nematic liquid crystals on a two-dimensional hexagon at a fixed temperature, as a function of $\lambda$---the edge length. This is a generic example for reduced approaches on regular polygons. We apply the high-index optimization-based shrinking dimer method to systematically construct the solution landscape consisting of multiple defect solutions and relationships between them. We report a new stable T state with index-$0$ that has an interior $-1/2$ defect; new classes of high-index saddle points with multiple interior defects referred to as H class and TD class; changes in the Morse index of saddle points with $\lambda^2$ and novel pathways mediated by high-index saddle points that can control and steer dynamical pathways. The range of topological degrees, locations and multiplicity of defects offered by these saddle points can be used to navigate through complex solution landscapes of nematic liquid crystals and other related soft matter systems.
Multistability for Nematic Liquid Crystals in Cuboids with Degenerate Planar Boundary Conditions

Abstract:We study nematic configurations within three-dimensional (3D) cuboids, with planar degenerate boundary conditions on the cuboid faces, in the Landau-de Gennes framework. There are two geometry-dependent variables: the edge length of the square cross-section, $\lambda$, and the parameter $h$, which is a measure of the cuboid height. Theoretically, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the global minimiser with a small enough cuboid size. We develop a new numerical scheme for the high-index saddle dynamics to deal with the surface energies. We report on a plethora of (meta)stable states, and their dependence on $h$ and $\lambda$, and in particular, how the 3D states are connected with their two-dimensional counterparts on squares and rectangles. Notably, we find families of almost uniaxial stable states constructed from the topological classification of tangent unit-vector fields and study transition pathways between them. We also provide a phase diagram of competing (meta)stable states, as a function of $\lambda$ and $h$.

Elastic anisotropy of nematic liquid crystals in the two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes model

Abstract: We study the effects of elastic anisotropy on the Landau-de Gennes critical points for nematic liquid crystals, in a square domain. The elastic anisotropy is captured by a parameter, $L_2$, and the critical points are described by three degrees of freedom. We analytically construct a symmetric critical point for all admissible values of $L_2$, which is necessarily globally stable for small domains i.e., when the square edge length, $\lambda$, is small enough. We perform asymptotic analyses and numerical studies to discover at least $5$ classes of these symmetric critical points - the $WORS$, $Ring^{\pm}$, $Constant$ and $pWORS$ solutions, of which the $WORS$, $Ring^+$ and $Constant$ solutions can be stable. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the novel $Constant$ solution is energetically preferable for large $\lambda$ and large $L_2$, and prove associated stability results that corroborate the stabilising effects of $L_2$ for reduced Landau-de Gennes critical points. We complement our analysis with numerically computed bifurcation diagrams for different values of $L_2$, which illustrate the interplay of elastic anisotropy and geometry for nematic solution landscapes, at low temperatures.
Analytical model for the motion and interaction of two-dimensional active nematic defects

Abstract:We develop an approximate, analytical model for the velocity of defects in active nematics by combining recent results for the velocity of topological defects in nematic liquid crystals with the flow field generated from individual defects in active nematics. Importantly, our model takes into account the long-range interactions between defects that result from the flows they produce as well as the orientational coupling between defects inherent in nematics. We show that the model can analytically predict bound states between two $+1/2$ winding number defects, effective attraction between two $-1/2$ defects, and the scaling of a critical unbinding length between $\pm 1/2$ defects with activity. The model also gives predictions for the trajectories of defects, such as the scattering of $+1/2$ defects by $-1/2$ defects at a critical impact parameter that depends on activity. In the presence of circular confinement, the model predicts a braiding motion for three $+1/2$ defects that was recently seen in experiments.

Abstract:We consider a variational two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes model in the theory of nematic liquid crystals in a disk of radius $R$. We prove that under a symmetric boundary condition carrying a topological defect of degree $\frac{k}{2}$ for some given {\bf even} non-zero integer $k$, there are exactly two minimizers for all large enough $R$. We show that the minimizers do not inherit the full symmetry structure of the energy functional and the boundary data. We further show that there are at least five symmetric critical points.

Abstract:In this paper, we study disclination lines in nematic liquid crystals confined in three-dimensional cylinder. The study of defects and their pattern in liquid crystals has recently attracted a lot of attention. Within the Landau-de Gennes tensor model, we investigate, both numerically and analytically, the common behavior of disclination lines under different boundary conditions. We found that, disclination lines is more generic than point defects; and the pattern of disclination lines is a result of subtle balance between boundary constraints and energy minimization.

Abstract:Topological defects are an essential part of the structure and dynamics of all liquid crystals, and they are particularly important in experiments and simulations on active liquid crystals. In a recent paper, Vromans and Giomi [Soft Matter, 2016, 12, 6490] pointed out that topological defects are not point-like objects but actually have orientational properties, which strongly affect the energetics and motion of the defects. That paper developed a mathematical formalism which describes the orientational properties as vectors. Here, we agree with the basic concept of defect orientation, but we suggest an alternative mathematical formalism. We represent the defect orientation by a tensor, with a rank that depends on the topological charge: rank 1 for a charge of +1/2, rank 3 for a charge of -1/2. Using this tensor formalism, we calculate the orientation-dependent interaction between defects, and we present numerical simulations of defect motion.
Transition Pathways Between Defect Patterns in Confined Nematic Liquid Crystals

Abstract:Confined nematic liquid crystals can admit multiple stable equilibria. These equilibrium states usually exhibit peculiar defect patterns in order to satisfy the topological constraints imposed by the boundary conditions. In this work, we systematically investigate transition pathways between different stable equilibria of nematic liquid crystals confined in a cylinder with homeotropic boundary condition. To do so, we implement spectral method to minimize the Landau-de Gennes free energy and develop a multiscale string method to accurately compute both minimal energy path and transition state. We first compute the transition pathways under the assumption that system state is invariant along the axial direction of the cylinder. This axial invariant assumption allows us to reduce the simulation domain to a two-dimensional disk. We subsequently remove the axial invariant assumption to search the transition pathways in the three-dimensional cylinder. Numerical simulations demonstrate that there exists a threshold for the cylinder height above which a domino-like transition pathway is more energetically favored than the axial invariant transition pathway. Moreover, we show that the transition pathway from escape radial with ring defects (ERRD) to escape radial has a lower energy barrier than the one from ERRD to planar polar, even though the free energy of the planar polar state is lower than that of the escape radial state. Our approach provides an accurate and efficient method to compute minimal energy path and transition state of confined nematic liquid crystals.

Abstract:We consider a nematic liquid crystal film confined to a flat cell with homeotropic and planar patterned hybrid anchoring and show, using Monte Carlo simulations, the possibility of the system to stabilize line and point defects. The planar anchoring surface is patterned with a chessboardlike grid of squares with alternating random or parallel homogeneous planar anchoring. The simulations show only line defects when the individual domains are small enough, but also point defects when the domain size is significantly larger than the sample thickness. In the latter case, defect lines are not observed in domains with random surface anchoring, although lines and points are connected by a thick line which separates two regions with different director tilts. Abstract:On the basis of Landau-de Gennes theory, the fine structures of escaped concentric and ideal concentric configurations confined in nematic liquid crystal droplets were investigated. The escaped concentric configuration rather than the ideal concentric configuration appeared under the same conditions and parameters reported in Liq. Cryst., 45(1): 102 − 111, 2017. After increasing k22 (twist elastic constant in Frank theory), the escaped concentric configuration transformed into the ideal concentric configuration. Within the ideal concentric configuration, we found an unexpecting order reconstruction occurred around the +1 line disclination, which has yet to be reported. In addition, the structural transitions within droplets of different radii were simulated.

Abstract:We study a two-dimensional variational problem which arises as a thin-film limit of the Landau-de Gennes energy of nematic liquid crystals. We impose an oblique angle condition for the nematic director on the boundary, via boundary penalization (weak anchoring.) We show that for strong anchoring strength (relative to the usual Ginzburg-Landau length scale parameter,) defects will occur in the interior, as in the case of strong (Dirichlet) anchoring, but for weaker anchoring strength all defects will occur on the boundary. These defects will each carry a fractional winding number; such boundary defects are known as "boojums". The boojums will occur in ordered pairs along the boundary; for nematic director with angle oblique to the normal vector, they serve to reduce the winding of the phase in two steps, in order to avoid the formation of interior defects. We determine the number and location of the defects via a Renormalized Energy and numerical simulations.

A Reduced Landau-de Gennes Study for Nematic Equilibria in Three-Dimensional Prisms

Abstract:We model nematic liquid crystal configurations inside three-dimensional prisms, with a polygonal cross-section and Dirichlet boundary conditions on all prism surfaces. We work in a reduced Landau-de Gennes framework, and the Dirichlet conditions on the top and bottom surfaces are special in the sense, that they are critical points of the reduced Landau-de Gennes energy on the polygonal cross-section. The choice of the boundary conditions allows us to make a direct correspondence between the three-dimensional Landau-de Gennes critical points and pathways on the two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes solution landscape on the polygonal cross-section. We explore this concept by means of asymptotic analysis and numerical examples, with emphasis on a cuboid and a hexagonal prism, focusing on three-dimensional multistability tailored by two-dimensional solution landscapes.

Abstract:Molecular simulations of a nematic liquid crystal confined in cylinder geometry with homeotropic anchoring have been carried out. The core structure of a disclination line defect of strength +1 has been examined, and comparison made with various theoretical treatments, which are presented in a unified way. It is found that excellent fits to the cylindrically-symmetrized order tensor profiles may be obtained with appropriate parameter choices; notwithstanding this, on the timescales of the simulation, the cylindrical symmetry of the core is broken and two defects of strength +1/2 may be resolved.
