Abstract:It is shown in this paper that three types of matrix equations AX−XF=BY,AX−EXF=BY and AXI−EXF=BY which have wide applications in control systems theory, are equivalent to the matrix equation AXℱ−X=ℬY with their coefficient matrices satisfying some relations. Based on right coprime factorization to (sA−I)−1ℬ, explicit solutions to the equation AXℱ−X=ℬY are proposed and thus explicit solutions to the former three types of matrix equations can be immediately established. With the special structure of the proposed solutions, necessary conditions to the nonsingularity of matrix X are also obtained. The proposed solutions give an ultimate and unified formula for the explicit solutions to these four types of linear matrix equations.

Abstract:For an inequality system defined by an infinite family of proper convex functions, we introduce some new notions of constraint qualifications in terms of the epigraphs of the conjugates of these functions and study relationships between these new constraint qualifications and other well-known constraint qualifications including the basic constraint qualification studied by Hiriart-Urrutty and Lemarechal and by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Extensions of known results to more general settings are presented, and applications to particular important problems, such as conic programming and approximation theory, are also studied.

Abstract:By means of the properties of the Hermitian-reflexive matrix and the straightened matrix,this paper considers the least-squares solutions with Hermitian-reflexive for the matrix equation AX+BY=C.The necessary and sufficient condition of the solutions for the matrix equation in the sets of Hermitian-reflexive matrices and the general expression of the solution are presented.Furthermore,for any two given complex matrices,the expression of the solution for relevant optimal approximate problem is derived.

Abstract:We consider conic inequality systems of the type$F(x)\ge_K 0$, with approximate solution $x_0$ associated to a parameter $\tau$,where $F$ is a twice Fréchet differentiable function between Hilbert spaces $X$ and $Y$, and$\ge_K$ is the partial order in $Y$ defined by anonempty convex (not necessarily closed) cone $K\subseteq Y$.We prove that, under the suitable conditions,the system $F(x)\ge_K 0$is solvable, and the ratio of the distance from $x_0$ to the solution set $S$ over the distance from $F(x_0)$ to the cone $K$ has anupper bound given explicitlyin terms of $\tau$ and $x_0$. We show that the upper bound is sharp.Applications to analytic function inequality/equality systems on Euclidean spaces are given,and the corresponding results of Dedieu [ SIAM J. Optim. , 11 (2000), pp. 411--425] are extended and significantly improved.

Abstract:We establish the existence and uniqueness results for variational inequality problems on Riemannian manifolds and solve completely the open problem proposed in [S.Z. Németh, Variational inequalities on Hadamard manifolds, Nonlinear Anal. 52 (2003) 1491–1498]. Also the relationships between the constrained optimization problem and the variational inequality problems as well as the projections on Riemannian manifolds are studied.

Abstract:Let X and Y be Banach spaces, L be a linear manifold in $X\times Y$, or, equivalently, the graph of a multi-valued linear operator from X to Y, and let S be a prescribed hyperplane in X, i.e. $S=g+N$. A central problem in our general setting is to determine, for a given $y\in Y$, a vector $w\in S\cap D ( L )$ such that, for some $z\in L ( w )$, $\| z-y\| =\operatorname{dist} ( y, L ( S\cap D ( L ) ) )$, such a vector w is called the constrained extremal solution of multi-valued linear inclusions $y\in L ( x )$ in Banach spaces. We establish three equivalent characterizations of constrained extremal solution of linear inclusions in Banach spaces by means of the algebraic operator parts, the metric generalized inverse of multi-valued linear operator L, and the dual mapping of the spaces. As follows from the main results in this paper, we may get the constrained extremal solution of multi-valued linear inclusions, by using the extremal solution of some interrelated multi-valued linear inclusions in the same spaces. The setting in this paper includes large classes of constrained extremal problems and optimal control problems subject to generalized boundary conditions.

Abstract:Using the result of the error estimate of the simple extended Newton method established in the present paper for solving abstract inequality systems, we study the error bound property of approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems on Banach spaces with the involved function F being Fréchet differentiable and its derivative F^' satisfying the center-Lipschitz condition (not necessarily the Lipschitz condition) around a point x 0 . Under some mild conditions, we establish results on the existence of the solutions, and the error bound properties for approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems. Applications of these results to finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities on Banach spaces are presented and the error bound properties of approximate solutions of finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities are also established. Our results extend the corresponding results in [ 3 , 18 , 19 ].

In particular, some examples of applications to test signals of mechanical systems and aero engine fault diagnosis are given to show the efficiency of the proposed theoretical results.

Abstract:The matrix equations AX = B , XC = D with the constraint PX = sXP are considered, where P is a given Hermitian matrix satisfying P 2 = I and s = ± 1 . Using an eigenvalue decomposition of P , the constrained problem can be equivalently transformed to two independent (unconstrained) problems of matrix equations in similar forms, and hence the constrained problem can be solved in terms of the eigenvectors of P . In this paper, a simple and eigenvector-free formula of the general solutions to the constrained problem is presented using Moore–Penrose generalized inverses of the coefficient matrices A and C . A similar problem of the matrix equations with generalized constraint is discussed, too. We also consider the least-norm solution of the constrained problems.

Abstract:Analytic solution of a constraint template composed of three points and three planes is presented to enrich the graph-based algorithm. Genetic simulated annealing algorithm (SAGA) is integrated with spatial constraint solving further that not only overcomes the shortcomings of poor extensibility of the graph-based algorithm, but also handles over- and under- constrained systems. In the end, we solve the above constraint problem with SAGA and compare the two algorithms.

Abstract:Three-dimensional geometric constraint solving is a rapidly developing field, with applications in areas such as kinematics, molecular, modeling, surveying, and geometric theorem proving. While two-dimensional constraint solving has been studied extensively, there still remain many open questions in the arena of three-dimensional problems. We first introduce some techniques presented by (Hoffmann and Vermeer, 1995). The constraint system Hoffmann has studied consists of six geometric elements and pairwise constraints between triples of the elements. The core idea is to solve the geometric constraint template problems. Based on this, we continue to demonstrate how to solve a special template system composed of three points and three planes. This constraint system includes the angle constraints between two planes that are not discussed before.

Abstract:This paper deals with a general class of optimization problems in robust control with given expectation value of performance index,which can be transformed into the problem of matrix approximation with matrix inequalities constraints.Theorem for existence and the uniqueness of the solutions of matrix approximation with linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) constraints is presented and algorithms for solving the problems of matrix approximation with matrix inequalities constraints are given based on the fact that such problems can be converted into the generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP) of LMI.Examples are given to illustrate the main results of the paper.

Abstract:novel idea is proposed for solving a system of mixed linear matrix inequalities and linear vector inequalities and equalities. First, the problem is converted into an unconstrained minimization problem with a continuously differentiable convex objective function. Then, a continuous-time dynamic system and a discrete-time dynamic system are proposed for solving it. Under some mild conditions, the proposed dynamic systems are shown to be globally convergent to a solution of the problem. The merits of the methods refer to their simple numerical implementations and capability for handling nonstrict LMIs easily. In addition, the methods are promising in neural circuits realization, and therefore have potential applications in many online control problems. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the performance of the methods and substantiate the theoretical results.

Abstract:Matrix iterative algorithms are proposed for solving the matrix least square problem of BXAT=F with variant linear constraints on solutions such as symmetry, skew-symmetry, and symmetry/skew-symmetry commuting with a given symmetric matrix P. We characterize the linear mapping from the constrained solution sets to their (independent) parameter spaces, and use these properties to deduce the matrix iterations, based on the classical algorithm LSQR for solving (unconstrained) LS problem. Numerical results are reported that show the efficiency of the proposed methods.

We first establish a variety of rank and inertia formulas for calculating the maximal and minimal ranks and inertias of Hermitian solutions and Hermitian definite solutions of the matrix equations $AX = B$ and $AXA^* = B$, and then use them to characterize many qualities and inequalities for Hermitian solutions and Hermitian definite solutions of the two matrix equations and their variations.

Abstract:A class of unconstrained optimization methods were developed for solving linear inequalities that avoid computational instabilities or low efficiencies. A nonlinear optimization problem was constructed for the nonempty relative internal area of the feasible region of the related linear inequalities. An unconstrained optimization problem for dual space variables was then developed using simple linear mapping between the primary and the dual variables with the primary and dual principles. The linear inequalities problem was then transformed to an unconstrained optimization problem which was solved using Newton's method and the conjugate gradient method. The numeral results illustrate the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:With the help of the concept of Kronecker map, an explicit solution for the matrix equation XF−AX=C is established. This solution is neatly expressed by a symmetric operator matrix, a controllability matrix and an observability matrix. In addition, the matrix equation XF-AX¯=C is also studied. An explicit solution for this equation is also proposed by means of the real representation of a complex matrix. Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of finding a sparse solution, with a minimal number of nonzero components, for a set of linear inequalities. This optimization problem is combinatorial and arises in various fields such as machine learning and compressed sensing. We present three new heuristics for the problem. The first two are greedy algorithms minimizing the sum of infeasibilities in the primal and dual spaces with different selection rules. The third heuristic is a combination of the greedy heuristic in the dual space and a local search algorithm. In numerical experiments, our proposed heuristics are compared with the weighted-[Formula: see text] algorithm and DCA programming with three different non-convex approximations of the zero norm. The computational results demonstrate the efficiency of our methods.
A Class of Quasi-Variational Inequalities with Unbounded Constraint Maps: Existence Results and Applications

Abstract:The quasi-variational inequalities play a significant role in analyzing a wide range of real-world problems. However, these problems are more complicated to solve than variational inequalities as the constraint set is based on the current point. We study a class of quasi-variational inequality problems whose specific structure is beneficial in finding some of its solutions by solving a corresponding variational inequality problem. Based on the classical existence theorem for variational inequalities, our main results ensure the occurrence of solutions for the aforementioned class of quasi-variational inequalities in which the associated constraint maps are (possibly) unbounded. We employ a coercivity condition which plays a crucial role in obtaining these results. Finally, we apply our existence results to ensure the occurrence of equilibrium for the pure exchange economic problems and the jointly convex generalized Nash games.
