Abstract:We define a subclass of totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (TSSCPPs) which we show is in direct bijection with permutation matrices. This bijection maps the inversion number of the permutation, the position of the 1 in the last column, and the position of the 1 in the last row to natural statistics on these TSSCPPs. We also discuss the possible extension of this approach to finding a bijection between alternating sign matrices and all TSSCPPs. Finally, we remark on a new poset structure on TSSCPPs arising from this perspective which is a distributive lattice when restricted to permutation TSSCPPs. Résumé. Nous définissons une sous-classe de partitions planes totalement symétriques autocomplémentaires (TSSCPPs) que nous montrons est en bijection directe avec des matrices permutation. Cette bijection trace le numéro inverse de la permutation, la position du 1 dans la derniére colonne, et la position du 1 dans le dernier rayon aux statistiques naturelles sur cettes TSSCPPs. Aussi, nous discutons l’extension possible de cette approche pour trouver une bijection entre les matrices á signe alternat et toutes TSSCPPs. Abstract:Background: Maintenance of ovarian blood flow (OBF) is suggested to be important for regular ovulation in women with polycystic ovaries (PCO). The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether electro-acupuncture (EA) of different frequencies and intensities can improve the OBF of anaesthetized rat in the animal model of PCO. Methods: PCO was experimentally induced by a single intramuscular (i.m.) injection of estradiol valerate (EV) in rats. Control rats were given i.m. injection of oil. The involvement of the two ovarian sympathetic nerves; superior ovarian nerve (SON) and plexus ovarian nerve (OPN), in OBF responses was elucidated by severance of SON and OPN in both control and PCO rats. How systemic circulatory changes affect OBF was evaluated by continuous recording of the blood pressure. OBF was measured on the surface of the ovary-using laser Doppler flowmetry. Acupuncture needles were inserted bilaterally into the abdominal and hind limb muscles and connected to an electrical stimulator. Two frequencies--2 Hz (low) and 80 Hz (high)--with three different intensities--1.5, 3, and 6 mA--were applied for 35 s. Results: Low-frequency EA at intensities of 3 and 6 mA elicited significant increases in OBF in the Control group compared to baseline. In the PCO group the increases in OBF were significant only when stimulating with low-frequency EA at 6 mA. After severance of the ovarian sympathetic nerves, the increased response of OBF that had been induced by low-frequency EA in both the Control and PCO group was abolished, indicating that the OBF response is mediated via the ovarian sympathetic nerves. High-frequency EA at 6 mA significantly decreased OBF and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) in the Control group compared to baseline. In the PCO group, the same stimulation produced similar decreases in MAP, but not in OBF. Conclusion: Low-frequency EA stimulation with a strong intensity (6 mA) increases OBF in rats with steroid-induced PCO whereas less strong intensity (3 mA) induces similar changes in control rats. Severance of the ovarian sympathetic nerves, abolish this OBF increase in both study groups, which suggests that the responses of OBF to EA are mediated via the ovarian sympathetic nerves.

Abstract:It is reported that the characteristic relations of type-II and type-III intermittencies, with respective local Poincar$\acute{e}$ maps of $x_{n+1}= (1+\epsilon)x_n + a x^3_n$ and $x_{n+1}= - (1+\epsilon)x_n - a x^3_n$, are both $- ln (\epsilon)$ under the assumption of uniform reinjection probability. However, the intermittencies have various characteristic relations such as $\epsilon^{-\nu}$ ($1/2 \leq \nu \leq 1$) depending on the reinjection probability. In this Letters the various characteristic relations are discussed, and the $\epsilon^{-1/2}$ characteristic relation is obtained experimentally in an electronic circuit, with uniform reinjection probability.

Abstract:A Fabry-Perot etalon placed in the object plane of a coherent optical processing system can be used as a variable bandpass preprocessing filter. Use of this filter leads to improved correlation signals in a matched spatial filter system. Experimental results are shown and compared with results obtained by two other preprocessing methods.

Abstract:Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase/stress-activated protein kinase (JNK/SAPK), and p38/RK/CSBP (p38) mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases are target enzymes activated by a wide range of cell-surface stimuli. Recently, a distinct class of dual specificity phosphatase has been shown to reverse activation of MAP kinases by dephosphorylating critical tyrosine and threonine residues. By searching the expressed sequence tag data base (dbEST) for homologues of known dual specificity phosphatases, we identified a novel partial human sequence for which we isolated a full-length cDNA (termed MKP-4). The deduced amino acid sequence of MKP-4 is most similar to MKP-X/PYST2 (61% identity) and MKP-3/PYST1 (57% identity), includes two N-terminal CH2 domains homologous to the cell cycle regulator Cdc25 phosphatase, and contains the extended active site sequence motif VXVHCXAGXSRSXTX3AYLM (where X is any amino acid) conserved in dual specificity phosphatases. MKP-4 produced in Escherichia coli catalyzes vanadate-sensitive breakdown of p-nitrophenyl phosphate as well as in vitro inactivation of purified ERK2. When expressed in COS-7 cells, MKP-4 blocks activation of MAP kinases with the selectivity ERK > p38 = JNK/SAPK. This cellular specificity is similar to MKP-3/PYST1, although distinct from hVH-5/M3-6 (JNK/SAPK = p38 >>> ERK). Northern analysis reveals a highly restricted tissue distribution with a single MKP-4 mRNA species of approximately 2.5 kilobases detected only in placenta, kidney, and embryonic liver. Immunocytochemical analysis showed MKP-4 to be present within cytosol although punctate nuclear staining co-localizing with promyelocytic protein was also observed in a subpopulation (10-20%) of cells. Chromosomal localization by analysis of DNAs from human/rodent somatic cell hybrids and a panel of radiation hybrids assign the human gene for MKP-4 to Xq28. The identification and characterization of MKP-4 highlights the emergence of an expanding family of structurally homologous dual specificity phosphatases possessing distinct MAP kinase specificity and subcellular localization as well as diverse patterns of tissue expression.
Immunity and beta-endorphin concentrations in hypothalamus and plasma in rats with steroid-induced polycystic ovaries: effect of low-frequency electroacupuncture

Abstract:The human endocrinological disorder polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common cause of reproductive failure. Even though the cause of PCOS is unknown, hormone and immune disturbances as well as hyperactivity in the sympathetic nervous system are likely to be involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. The present study was undertaken to elucidate if rats with estradiol valerate (EV)-induced polycystic ovaries (PCO) have altered beta-endorphin concentrations in the hypothalamus and in plasma and if they have alterations in circulating immune cell populations and the activity. Repeated low-frequency (2 Hz) electroacupuncture (EA) treatments are known to modulate the release of beta-endorphin, immune responses, and the activity in the autonomic nervous system. We therefore also investigated the effect of EA treatments on the beta-endorphin and the immune systems. Low-frequency EA was given 12 times, 25 min each, over 30 days starting 2-3 days after i.m. injection of EV. The beta-endorphin concentrations in the hypothalamus and in plasma as well as the frequencies of CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells were significantly lower in EV-injected control rats as compared to oil-injected control rats. Repeated EA treatments in EV-injected rats significantly increased beta-endorphin concentrations in the hypothalamus. In conclusion, these findings show that both the beta-endorphinergic and the immune system are significantly impaired in rats with steroid-induced PCO and that repeated EA treatments can restore some of these disturbances.

Abstract:Cockroach antennae have been extensively used for studying the multifunctional sensory appendage that generates the olfactory, gustatory, tactile, thermal, and humidity senses. Of the variety of senses, the tactile sense is thought to play a key role for perceiving physical objects. Because most cockroach species are nocturnal, the tactile sense of the antenna would be essential to determine the position, shape, and texture of surrounding objects in the dark. Mechanoreceptors on the surface of the antenna are primarily responsible for the generation of tactile sense. In addition, the motor function of antenna also contributes to the active tactile sense (Staudacher et al. 2005; Comer and Baba 2011). The antennal movement is accompanied by the activation of proprioceptors at the antennal joints.

Abstract:A fast alternative user-selection procedure to semi-automatic Philips Extended Brilliance Workspace's Lung Nodule Assessment™ is presented. By using modified Local Thickness algorithm which utilizes 3D Region Growing algorithm and IsoData auto-thresholding algorithm, the user can perform fewer steps to semi-automatically segment and estimate a respective nodule more accurately, especially on irregular shape nodules. Attached blood vessels and extruding thorn-like features of the selected nodule are also automatically excluded in segmentation with the proposed method. By using correlation comparison on the same lung nodule dataset between our proposed method and Philips Extended Brilliance Workspace's Lung Nodule Assessment™'s semi-automatic method, we can see that the correlation is 0.9887.
Effects of Electroacupuncture on Ovarian Expression of the Androgen Receptor and Connexin 43 in Rats with Letrozole-Induced Polycystic Ovaries

Abstract:Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) occurs in women of reproductive age and is often characterized by reproductive and endocrine dysfunction. Androgens play a major role in PCOS, and previous studies reported abnormal expression of Connexin 43 (Cx43) in animal models of PCOS, suggesting an association of Cx43 with PCOS pathogenesis. Experimental and clinical evidence indicated that acupuncture may be a safe and effective approach for treating reproductive and endocrine disorders in women with PCOS. This study aimed to determine the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on PCOS and its relationship with the expression of the androgen receptor (AR) and Cx43. Methods: In total, 30 female Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks old) were randomly divided into three groups: control group, letrozole (LE) group, and LE + EA group. Rats were administered LE solution (1.0 mg/kg) for 21 consecutive days to induce PCOS. For the LE + EA group, additional EA treatment was conducted (2 Hz, 20 min/d) with "Guanyuan" (CV3) for 14 consecutive days. After hematoxylin-eosin staining, the ovarian structure was observed with an optical microscope, and serum levels of the following hormones were examined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA): testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH); luteinizing hormone (LH), insulin (INS), anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), and inhibin B (INHB). Fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels were evaluated using glucose oxidase-peroxidase. Ovarian mRNA and protein expressions of AR and Cx43 were determined by real-time RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. Results: EA was found to restore the cyclicity and ovarian morphology in the PCOS rat model. Serum derived from the LE + EA group showed significant decreases in the levels of T, free androgen index (FAI), LH, LH/FSH ratio, AMH, INHB, and fasting serum insulin (FINS), and significant increases in the levels of E2, FSH, and SHBG. Western blot analysis showed a decreased protein expression of ovarian AR and Cx43; real-time RT-PCR showed reduced expression of ovarian mRNA levels of AR and Cx43. Conclusions: In conclusion, our results showed that EA can ease hyperandrogenism and polycystic ovary morphology in PCOS rats. Furthermore, EA counteracted the letrozole-induced upregulation of AR and Cx43. These results suggested that acupuncture can break the vicious cycle initiated by excessive androgen secretion and may be an effective treatment method for improving the reproductive and endocrine dysfunction caused by PCOS.

Abstract:Metamorphic testing has been successfully used in many different fields to solve the test oracle problem. However, how to find a set of appropriate metamorphic relations for metamorphic testing remains a complicated and tedious task. Recently some machine learning approaches have been proposed to predict metamorphic relations. These approaches predicting single label metamorphic relation can alleviate this problem to some extent. However, many applications involve multi-group metamorphic relations, and these approaches are clearly inefficient. To address this problem, in this paper we propose a Multi-Label Metamorphic Relations prediction approach based on an improved radial basis function (RBF) neural network named RBF-MLMR. First, RBF-MLMR uses state-of-the-art soot analysis tool to generate control flow graph and corresponds labels from the source codes of programs. Second, the extracted nodes and the path properties constitute multi-label data sets for the control flow graph. Finally, a multi-label RBF neural network prediction model is established to predict whether the program satisfies multiple metamorphic relations. In order to improve the prediction results, affinity propagation and $k$ -means clustering algorithms are used to optimize the RBF neural network structure of RBF-MLMR. A set of dedicated experiments based on public programs is conducted to validate RBF-MLMR. The experimental results show that RBF-MLMR can achieve accuracy of around 80% for predicting two and three metamorphic relations.
Heart Rate Changes in Electroacupuncture Treated Polycystic Ovary in Rats

Abstract:Introduction: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common metabolic disorder, it affects both humans and animals. It may induce coronary heart disease, obesity and hyperandrogenism. Previous studies show that Low frequency Electroacupuncture (EA) have an effect on PCOS, however the exact pathway is unclear. Aim: To find the effect of EA on autonomic activity of the heart in Estradiol Valerate (EV) induced PCOS rats. Materials and methods: Heart rate variability (HRV) was assessed in 3 groups: 1) Control; 2) PCOS rats; and 3) PCOS rats after EA treatment (n=8 in each group). From the time domain analysis and frequency domain analysis (linear measures) HRV analysis was done. EA stimulation was given at low frequency of 2Hz for 15 min on alternate days for 4-5 weeks. Collected data were statistically analysed using One-Way Analysis of Variance with the application of multiple comparisons of Tukey test. Results: EA treatment group shows significant reduction in Heart Rate (HR) and low frequency, high frequency ratio (LF/HF); and increase in RR interval, Total Power (TP) when compared to PCOS group. Conclusion: The study concludes that EA treatment has a significant effect on reducing sympathetic tone and decreasing HR in PCOS.

Abstract:Objective: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at different acupoints on hyperandrogenism and ovarian androgen receptor (AR) expression in rats with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), so as to explore its mechanisms underlying improvement of PCOS. Methods: Sixty female SD rats were randomly divided into control, model, Zusanli (ST 36), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Guanyuan (CV 4) and comprehensive groups (10 rats/group). The PCOS model was established by giving (gavage) the animals with Letrozole solution (1.0 mg/kg), once daily for 21 consecutive days. EA stimulation was applied to ST 36, SP 6, or CV 4 respectively, once daily for 14 days. The comprehensive group was treated by EA treatment of the abovementioned three acupoints in the meantime. Before and after the treatment, the body mass and the ovary weight were measured. The morphological structure of the ovary was observed under microscope after H．E. staining. The levels of serum hormone and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) were assayed by ELISA. Free androgen index (FAI) was calculated and the expression of AR in the ovary was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results: After modeling, the body mass, ovary weight, serum testosterone (T) and FAI levels and the expression of AR protein in late ovarian follicles were significantly increased (P<0.01, P<0.05), and serum estradiol (E2) and SHBG contents were significantly decreased relevant to the control group (P<0.01). Following EA intervention and compared with the model group, the body weight of each EA group was significantly reduced (P<0.05), the ovarian pathological changes were improved, and serum T and FAI levels were significantly decreased (P<0.01), and serum E2 and SHBG contents significantly increased in the ST 36, CV 4 and comprehensive groups (P<0.01, P<0.05). The ovary weight of only CV 4 group was significantly lower than that of the model group (P<0.01). The expression of AR protein in late follicles of both CV 4 and SP 6 groups was markedly decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01). Conclusion: EA at ST 36, SP 6, and CV 4 all can improve the hyperandrogenism and ovarian polycystic morphological changes of PCOS rats, while different acupoints have different functional characteristics.
Acupuncture and exercise restore adipose tissue expression of sympathetic markers and improve ovarian morphology in rats with dihydrotestosterone-induced PCOS

Abstract:Altered activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which innervates adipose and ovarian tissue, may play a role in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We hypothesize that electro-acupuncture (EA) and physical exercise reduce sympathetic activity by stimulating ergoreceptors and somatic afferent pathways in muscles. Here we investigated the effects of low-frequency EA and physical exercise on mRNA expression of sympathetic markers in adipose tissue and on ovarian morphology in female rats that received dihydrotestosterone (DHT) continuously, starting before puberty, to induce PCOS. At age 11 wk, rats with DHT-induced PCOS were randomly divided into three groups: PCOS, PCOS plus EA, and PCOS plus exercise. The latter two groups received 2-Hz EA (evoking muscle twitches) three times/week or had free access to a running wheel for 4-5 wk. In mesenteric adipose tissue, expression of beta(3)-adrenergic receptor (ADRB3), nerve growth factor (NGF), and neuropeptide Y (NPY) mRNA was higher in untreated PCOS rats than in controls. Low-frequency EA and exercise downregulated mRNA expression of NGF and NPY, and EA also downregulated expression of ADRB3, compared with untreated rats with DHT-induced PCOS. EA and exercise improved ovarian morphology, as reflected in a higher proportion of healthy antral follicles and a thinner theca interna cell layer than in untreated PCOS rats. These findings support the theory that increased sympathetic activity contributes to the development and maintenance of PCOS and that the effects of EA and exercise may be mediated by modulation of sympathetic outflow to the adipose tissue and ovaries.
Activated eosinophils stimulate phosphatidylcholine secretion in primary culture of rat type II pneumocytes.

Abstract:Activated eosinophils in airway epithelium are involved in the pathogenesis of many airway diseases. We examined whether activated eosinophils influence the secretion of phosphatidylcholine (PC), the predominant component of pulmonary surfactant, in primary culture of rat type II pneumocytes. The eosinophils (10(5) cells/ml) activated by opsonized zymosan (100 micrograms/ml) increased PC secretion from the type II pneumocytes. The increased PC secretion reduced in the presence of both superoxide dismutase (2 units/ml) and catalase (1000 units/ml). These results suggest that activated eosinophils stimulate the secretion of pulmonary surfactant partly through superoxide anions.

Abstract:Our daily round of occupations occurs within time and space. Our understanding of occupation has traditionally viewed time and space as part of the external environment. Patterns of the "when?" and "where?" of occupations can be described. But relating time and space to the internal experience of occupation reflects more of the meaning to individuals and more complex patterns arise. Like the varied bits of glass in the object case of an art kaleidoscope, the multiple elements of occupation interact. Reflected in mirrors of our choice, we find always-changing, complex patterns of daily occupation. The elements of occupation most important for maintaining or regaining health and the mirrors and lens through which we view occupation historically have formed shifting patterns in occupational therapy, patterns of how we view ourselves, our practice, and those to whom we provide our services. We must combine the science and the art of occupational therapy as the metaphor of the kaleidoscope combines both, producing awe and wonder at the result.
Effects of Electroacupuncture on Uterine Morphology and Expression of Oestrogen Receptors in Ovariectomised Rats.

Abstract:AimTo observe the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on uterine morphology and expression of oestrogen receptor (ER) α and β in ovariectomised (OVX) rats.MethodsThirty female Sprague-Dawley rats with regular 4-day oestrus cycles were divided into a sham operation group (Control, n=10) and two OVX groups that remained untreated (OVX group, n=10) or received EA treatment (OVX+EA group, n=10). In the latter group, EA was applied at CV4, CV3, SP6 and bilateral Zigong (30 min per day) for 3 days. The effects of EA on uterine morphology were observed by H&E staining. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription-PCR (qRT-PCR) and Western blotting were used to measure ERα and ERβ mRNA and protein expression, respectively.ResultsRelative to the (untreated) OVX group, EA treatment significantly increased the uterine wet weight to body weight (UWW/BW) ratio (0.47±0.04 vs 0.31±0.03 g/kg, p=0.04), and myometrial thickness (109.39±10.71 vs 60.81±8.1 μm, p=0.016) of OVX rats. Similarly, the total number of endometrial glands per cross section and endometrial thickness in the OVX +EA group was significantly increased compared to the (untreated) OVX group. EA treatment also increased protein (but not mRNA) expression of both ERα and ERβ in the uteri of OVX rats.ConclusionsThis study has demonstrated that EA treatment decreases uterine atrophy in OVX rats. This unique effect of EA on the uterus may be due to upregulation of serum levels of E2and differential regulation of sex steroid receptors ERα and ERβ.

Abstract:Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder characterized by hyperandrogenism and follicular arrest. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been shown to be effective at improving hyperandrogenism and follicular arrest in PCOS; however, its mechanism of action remains to be deciphered. Objective: In this study, we investigated whether EA improved follicular development in an obese rat model of PCOS and regulated the expression of adiponectin, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). Methods: EA was administered at CV3, CV4 and ST40. Changes in body weight, paraovarian fat, estrus cycle, ovarian morphology, levels of related hormones, and glucose and lipid metabolism were evaluated. In addition, protein and mRNA expression of adiponectin, AMPK and ACC was measured. Results: The body weight and paraovarian fat of rats in the EA group were reduced, while estrus cyclicity and ovarian morphology improved. Levels of free fatty acids, triglycerides, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly reduced in the EA group, as well as blood glucose levels. Furthermore, levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone were reduced in the EA group, while estradiol levels were increased. Protein and mRNA expression of adiponectin, AMPKα1 and liver kinase B1 (LKB1) was found to be increased in the EA group, while protein and mRNA expression of ACC were significantly reduced.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that EA improved follicular development and metabolism and regulated expression levels of adiponectin, AMPKα1, LKB1 and ACC in our obese rat model of PCOS.

Abstract:Post-disaster development policies, such as resettlement, can have major impacts on communities. This paper examines how and why people's livelihoods change as a result of resettlement, and relocated people's views of such changes, in the context of natural disasters. It presents two historically-grounded, comparative case studies of post-flood resettlement in rural Mozambique. The studies demonstrate a movement away from rain-fed subsistence agriculture towards commercial agriculture and non-agricultural activities. The ability to secure a viable livelihood was a key determinant of whether resettlers remained in their new locations or returned to the river valleys despite the risks posed by floods. The findings suggest that more research is required to understand i) why resettlers choose to stay in or abandon designated resettlement areas, ii) what is meant by 'voluntary' and 'involuntary' resettlement in the realm of post-disaster reconstruction, and iii) the policy drivers of resettlement in developing countries.
