Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are versatile topological excitations that can be used as nonvolatile information carriers. The confinement of skyrmions in channels is fundamental for any application based on the accumulation and transport of skyrmions. Here, we report a method that allows effective position control of skyrmions in designed channels by engineered energy barriers and wells, which is realized in a magnetic multilayer film by harnessing the boundaries of patterns with modified magnetic properties. We experimentally and computationally demonstrate that skyrmions can be attracted or repelled by the boundaries of areas with modified perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. By fabricating square and stripe patterns with modified magnetic properties, we show the possibility of building reliable channels for confinement, accumulation, and transport of skyrmions, which effectively protect skyrmions from being destroyed at the device edges. Our results are useful for the design of spintronic applications using either static or dynamic skyrmions.
Uniaxial Strain Modulation of the Skyrmion Phase Transition in Ferromagnetic Thin Films

Abstract:Mechanical control ofmagnetic order through strain is an important and promising approach in the development of advanced spintronics devices. Here, using a real-space phase-field model based on Ginzburg-Landau theory, we explore the uniaxial strain modulation of topological phase transition in ferromagnetic thin films. In the phase-field model, a magnetoelastic coupling between magnetization and strain, rather than the strain-induced anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, is introduced to describe the strain-modulated anisotropic deformation and topological phase transition of skyrmions. The phase-field simulations show that a uniaxial tensile strain in the ferromagnetic thin films can not only change the wavelength and propagation direction of the spin spiral in helical phase but also induce topological phase transitions of skyrmions. Under specific magnetic fields, the ferromagnetic thin film exhibits the ferromagnetic-to-skyrmion and skyrmion-to-helical phase transitions serially when the uniaxial tensile strain increases, which are different from those induced by uniaxial stress in bulk ferromagnets. The present work not only provides a magnetoelastic coupling mechanism on the uniaxial strain control of topological magnetic structures but also suggests an effectiveway to tune the electromagnetic properties of ferromagnetic thin films for a new generation of spintronic devices based on skyrmions.

Abstract:We propose a mechanism to pin skyrmions in chiral magnetic thin films by introducing local maxima of magnetic exchange strength as pinning centers. The local maxima can be realized by engineering the local density of itinerant electrons. The stationary properties and the dynamical pinning and depinning processes of an isolated skyrmion around a pinning center are studied. We carry out numerical simulations of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation and find a way to control the position of an isolated skyrmion in a pinning center lattice using electric current pulses. The results are verified by a Thiele equation analysis. We also find that the critical current to depin a skyrmion, which is estimated to have order of magnitude 10(7)-10(8) A m(-2), has linear dependence on the pinning strength.

Abstract:The recent discovery of a Skyrmion crystal phase in an insulating multiferroic compound Cu2OSeO3 calls for new ways and ideas to manipulate the Skyrmions in the absence of spin transfer torque from the conduction electrons. It is shown here that the position-dependent electric field, pointed along the direction of the average induced dipole moment of the Skyrmion, can induce the Hall motion of the Skyrmion with its velocity orthogonal to the field gradient. Finite Gilbert damping produces longitudinal motion. Inter-Skyrmion interaction leads to the reduction of the drift speed. We find a rich variety of resonance modes excited by an ac electric field.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are topological quasiparticles with great potential for applications in future information storage and processing devices because of their nanoscale size, high stability, and large velocity. Recently, the high-frequency properties of skyrmions have been explored for magnon nanodevices. Here we systematically study the dynamics of an isolated skyrmion under voltage excitation through the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy effect in a circular thin film. A theoretical model considering the demagnetization energy, which has often been neglected or treated superficially in previous skyrmion research but is demonstrated to have importance in determining the skyrmion dynamic state, is developed. With our model, the periodic oscillation of the skyrmion radius can be solved numerically with similar precision compared to micromgnetic simulations, and the characteristic frequency of the skyrmion breathing can be determined analytically with greater precision than previous studies. Furthermore, we find that the breathing skyrmion can be analogized as a modulator by investigating its linear modulation functionality under sinusoidal-form voltage excitation. Different from the conventional modulation system with complex CMOS circuits, this skyrmion modulator device integrates with both the modulation and carrier wave generation functionality, thus showing greater convenience and efficiency in applications. Our findings can provide useful guidance for both theoretical and experimental skyrmions research as well as the development of skyrmion-based magnonic devices with significant potential applicability in future communication system.

Abstract:Plasmonic skyrmions are a subject of significant interest due to their potential applications in optics, photonics, and electromagnetic wave technology. These skyrmions are created by the interference of surface plasmon polaritons or spoof localized surface plasmons (SLSP), offering new possibilities for controlling light–matter interactions and structuring light. In this study, we have demonstrated the generation of both electric and magnetic skyrmions simultaneously using a rotational symmetric SLSP spiral meta-structure lattice, operating across a broad range from microwave to terahertz frequencies. By implementing them into a resonance configuration of the quasi-bound state in the continuum through symmetry breaking, we enhance the Q factor and fields, resulting in highly sensitive sensing performance. The SLSP metasurface enables tunable plasmonic skyrmions controlled by the incident polarization. Our findings have potential applications in highly sensitive sensing, filtering, modulation, and communication.

Abstract:We study the collective dynamics of the Skyrmion crystal (SkX) in thin films of ferromagnetic metals resulting from the nontrivial Skyrmion topology. We show that the current-driven motion of the crystal reduces the topological Hall effect and the Skyrmion trajectories bend away from the direction of the electric current (the Skyrmion Hall effect). We find a new dissipation mechanism in non-collinear spin textures that can lead to a much faster spin relaxation than Gilbert damping, calculate the dispersion of phonons in the SkX, and discuss effects of impurity pinning of Skyrmions.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions promise breakthroughs in future memory and computing devices due to their inherent stability and small size. Their creation and current driven motion have been recently observed at room temperature, but the key mechanisms of their formation are not yet well-understood. Here it is shown that in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures, pulsed currents can drive morphological transitions between labyrinth-like, stripe-like, and skyrmionic states. Using high-resolution X-ray microscopy, the spin texture evolution with temperature and magnetic field is imaged and it is demonstrated that with transient Joule heating, topological charges can be injected into the system, driving it across the stripe-skyrmion boundary. The observations are explained through atomistic spin dynamic and micromagnetic simulations that reveal a crossover to a global skyrmionic ground state above a threshold magnetic field, which is found to decrease with increasing temperature. It is demonstrated how by tuning the phase stability, one can reliably generate skyrmions by short current pulses and stabilize them at zero field, providing new means to create and manipulate spin textures in engineered chiral ferromagnets.

Abstract:Thin ferromagnetic films can possess unconventional magnetic properties, opening a new road for using them in spintronic technologies. In the present work exploiting three different methods, we comprehensively analyze phason excitations of a skyrmion lattice in synthetic antiferromagnets. To analyze phason excitations of the skyrmion lattice, we have constructed an analytical model based on three coupled helices and found a linear gapless mode. Micromagnetic simulations also support this result. Moreover, a similar result has been achieved within the rigid skyrmion lattice model based on the coupled Thiele's equations, when the coupling between skyrmions in different layers of the synthetic antiferromagnetic is comparable to or larger than the intralayer coupling. In addition, we also consider the orbital angular momentum and spin pumping current associated with phason excitations. Due to the gapless excitations in the case of skyrmion lattice, the pumping current is nonzero for the arbitrary frequency of pumping microwaves. In the case of individual skyrmions, no current is pumped when microwave frequency is inside the gap of the spectrum of individual skyrmions.

Abstract:Taking advantage of the electron-current ability to generate, stabilize, and manipulate skyrmions prompts the application of skyrmion multilayers in room-temperature spintronic devices. In this study, the robust high-density skyrmions are electromagnetically generated from Pt/Co/Ta multilayers using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. The skyrmion density is tunable and can be significantly enhanced. Remarkably, these generated skyrmions after optimized manipulation sustain at zero field with both the in-plane current and perpendicular magnetic field being switched off. The skyrmion generation and manipulation method demonstrated in this study opens up an alternative way to engineer skyrmion-based devices. The results also provide key data for further theoretical study to discover the nature of the interaction between the electric current and different spin configurations. Published by AIP Publishing.
Magnon-driven Skyrmion Dynamics in Antiferromagnets: Effect of Magnon Polarization

Abstract:The controllable magnetic skyrmion motion represents a highly concerned issue in preparing advanced skyrmion-based spintronic devices. Specifically, magnon-driven skyrmion motion can be easily accessible in both metallic and insulating magnets, and thus is highly preferred over electric current control further for the ultra-low energy consumption. In this work, we investigate extensively the dynamics of skyrmion motion driven by magnon in an antiferromagnet using the collective coordinate theory, focusing on the effect of magnon polarization. It is revealed that the skyrmion Hall motion driven by circularly polarized magnon becomes inevitable generally, consistent with earlier report. Furthermore, the elastic scattering theory and numerical results unveil the strong inter-dependence between the linearly polarized magnon and skyrmion motion, suggesting the complicated dependence of the skyrmion motion on the polarization nature of driving magnon. On the reversal, the scattering from the moving skyrmion may lead to decomposition of the linearly polarized magnon into two elliptically polarized magnon bands. Consequently, a net transverse force acting on skyrmion is generated owing to the broken mirror symmetry, which in turn drives a skyrmion Hall motion. The Hall motion can be completely suppressed only in some specific condition where the mirror symmetry is preserved. The present work unveils non-trivial skyrmion-magnon scattering behavior in antiferromagnets, advancing the antiferromagnetic spintronics and benefiting to high-performance devices.

Abstract:Skyrmions are topologically stable quasiparticles that have been predicted and demonstrated in quantum fields, solid-state physics, and magnetic materials, but only recently observed in electromagnetic fields, triggering fast expanding research across different spectral ranges and applications. Here we review the recent advances in optical skyrmions within a unified framework. Starting from fundamental theories, including classification of skyrmionic states, we describe generation and topological control of different kinds of optical skyrmions in structured and time-dependent optical fields. We further highlight generalized classes of optical topological quasiparticles beyond skyrmions and outline the emerging applications, future trends, and open challenges. A complex vectorial field structure of optical quasiparticles with versatile topological characteristics emerges as an important feature in modern spin-optics, imaging and metrology, optical forces, structured light and topological and quantum technologies.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions as swirling spin textures with a nontrivial topology have potential applications as magnetic memory and storage devices. Since the initial discovery of skyrmions in non-centrosymmetric B20 materials, the recent effort has focused on exploring room-temperature skyrmions in heavy metal and ferromagnetic heterostructures, a material platform compatible with existing spintronic manufacturing technology. Here, we report the surprising observation that a room-temperature skyrmion phase can be stabilized in an entirely different class of systems based on antiferromagnetic (AFM) metal and ferromagnetic (FM) metal IrMn/CoFeB heterostructures. There are a number of distinct advantages of exploring skyrmions in such heterostructures including zero-field stabilization, tunable antiferromagnetic order, and sizable spin-orbit torque (SOT) for energy-efficient current manipulation. Through direct spatial imaging of individual skyrmions, quantitative evaluation of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and demonstration of current-driven skyrmion motion, our findings firmly establish the AFM/FM heterostructures as a promising material platform for exploring skyrmion physics and device applications.

Abstract:Magnetic ultrathin films grown on heavy metal substrates often exhibit rich spin structures due to the competition between various magnetic interactions such as Heisenberg exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and higher-order spin interactions. Here we employ spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy to study magnetic nanoskyrmion phase in Fe monolayer grown on Ir(111) substrate. Our observations show that the formation of nanoskyrmion lattice in the Fe/Ir(111) system depends sensitively on the growth conditions and various nonskyrmion spin states can be formed. Remarkably, the application of voltage pulses between the tip and the sample can trigger a nonskyrmion-to-skyrmion phase transition. Such a phase transition is determined by the total injected energy during the voltage pulse suggesting that there exists a potential barrier between a metastable nonskyrmion spin state and a true skyrmion ground state. Antiferromagnetic Skyrmion: Stability, Creation and Manipulation

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like topological excitations in ferromagnets, which have the topological number $Q=\pm 1$, and hence show the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE) due to the Magnus force effect originating from the topology. Here, we propose the counterpart of the magnetic skyrmion in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) system, that is, the AFM skyrmion, which is topologically protected but without showing the SkHE. Two approaches for creating the AFM skyrmion have been described based on micromagnetic lattice simulations: (i) by injecting a vertical spin-polarized current to a nanodisk with the AFM ground state; (ii) by converting an AFM domain-wall pair in a nanowire junction. It is demonstrated that the AFM skyrmion, driven by the spin-polarized current, can move straightly over long distance, benefiting from the absence of the SkHE. Our results will open a new strategy on designing the novel spintronic devices based on AFM materials.

Abstract:Topological spin structures have recently received tremendous attention in condensed matter physics and information science. In addition to the frequently studied skyrmion, skyrmioniums that exhibit a zero topological charge are also promising for spintronics memory carriers. Here, through integrating an interfacial asymmetric Ta/CoFeB/MgO multilayer device with an on-chip conducting wire that induces Oersted fields and Joule heating, we show experimentally the creation and annihilation of magnetic Neel-type skyrmioniums at room temperature, without applying external magnetic fields. In particular, we observe two distinct annihilation dynamics of the skyrmionium by a polar magneto-optical Kerr microscope. Under the direction of Oersted fields that are parallel to the core direction of the skyrmionium, the skyrmionium shrinks inward to form a skyrmion. Under the antiparallel configuration, skyrmionium expands outward to form a stripe domain. By performing micromagnetic simulations, we reveal the Neel-type skyrmionium formation and annihilation dynamics as well as the corresponding energy changes among different magnetic states. Our findings could be important for understanding the formation and annihilation dynamics of skyrmioniums, which also provide an on-chip non-electrical-contact manipulating method of skyrmioniums.

Abstract:We propose a method to generate magnetic skyrmions through spin-wave focusing in chiral ferromagnets. A lens is constructed to focus spin waves by a curved interface between two ferromagnetic thin films with different perpendicular magnetic anisotropies. Based on the principle of identical magnonic path length, we derive the lens contour that can be either elliptical or hyperbolical depending on the magnon refractive index. Micromagnetic simulations are performed to verify the theoretical design. It is found that under proper conditions, magnetic skyrmions emerge near the focus point of the lens where the spin-wave intensity has been significantly enhanced. A close investigation shows that a magnetic droplet first forms and then converts to the skyrmion accompanied by a change in topological charge. The phase diagram about the amplitude and time duration of the exciting field for skyrmion generation is obtained. Our findings would be helpful for designing spintronic devices combining the advantages of skyrmionics and magnonics.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected whirling spin texture. Their nanoscale dimensions, topologically protected stability and solitonic nature, together are promising for future spintronics applications. To translate these compelling features into practical spintronic devices, a key challenge lies in achieving effective control of skyrmion properties, such as size, density and thermodynamic stability. Here, we report the discovery of ferroelectrically tunable skyrmions in ultrathin BaTiO3/SrRuO3 bilayer heterostructures. The ferroelectric proximity effect at the BaTiO3/SrRuO3 heterointerface triggers a sizeable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, thus stabilizing robust skyrmions with diameters less than a hundred nanometres. Moreover, by manipulating the ferroelectric polarization of the BaTiO3 layer, we achieve local, switchable and nonvolatile control of both skyrmion density and thermodynamic stability. This ferroelectrically tunable skyrmion system can simultaneously enhance the integratability and addressability of skyrmion-based functional devices.
