Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the fluoride release properties and the effect on bond strength of two experimental adhesive cements. Synthesized particles of nano-fluorapatite (nano-FA) or nano-fluorohydroxyapatite (nano-FHA) were incorporated into a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji Ortho LC) and characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Blocks with six different concentrations of nano-FA or nano-FHA were manufactured and their fluoride release properties evaluated by ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The unaltered glass ionomer cement Fuji Ortho LC (GC, control) and the two experimental cements with the highest fluoride release capacities (nano-FA+Fuji Ortho LC (GFA) and nano-FHA+Fuji Ortho LC (GFHA)) were used to bond composite blocks and orthodontic brackets to human enamel. After 24h water storage all specimens were debonded, measuring the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) and the shear bond strength (SBS), respectively. The optimal concentration of added nano-FA and nano-FHA for maximum fluoride release was 25wt.%, which nearly tripled fluoride release after 70days compared with the control group. GC exhibited a significantly higher SBS than GFHA/GFA, with GFHA and GFA not differing significantly (P>0.05). The μTBS of GC and GFA were significantly higher than that of GFHA (P⩽0.05). The results seem to indicate that the fluoride release properties of Fuji Ortho LC are improved by incorporating nano-FA or nano-FHA, simultaneously maintaining a clinically sufficient bond strength when nano-FA was added.
Fluoride Release and Recharge Ability of A Novel Fluoride Release Composite Resin

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the fluoride release rates and fluoride recharge capability of a experimental resin composite, a compomer, a giomer and a resin-modified glass ionomer cement. Methods: Ten disc specimens of each material were prepare and polished with abrasive paper, followed by clearing with oil-free compressed air jet. The specimens were placed in a plastic vessel containing 5ml deionized water immediately after fabrication. Each specimen was removed and put to a new a vessel containing deionized water each day, and the sample solution was test for fluoride concentration each day using a compound fluoride ion selective electrode and a conductivity meter. All specimens were removed from container after 28 days and were "recharged" by immersing in a fluoride foam solution for four minutes. Then fluoride release from these recharged samples was measured daily for 7 days. Recharge was repeated three times. Result: Fuji II LC demonstrated the highest fluoride release (p <0.01), followed by experimental resin and Compoglass. Both Beautufil and Charisma presented the lowest fluoride release (p <0.01) during the first two weeks. All materials except Charisma demonstrated a sharp decline of fluoride release, followed by a comparatively stable stage of fluoride release for about twenty days. All materials presented fluoride release increase substantially one day after recharge but declines rapidly almost to the baseline level after 2 days except for Fuji II LC that showed a continual fluoride release for 5 days. Conclusion: The experimental composite resin has a capability of fluoride release and recharge that are comparable to compomers.
[Fluoride Release and Recharge Properties of Six Restorative Materials].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the F(-) releasing and recharging properties of six dental restorative materials. METHODS:Disc specimens 10 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness were prepared from 6 different dental restorative materials: Fuji VII [glass ionomer cement (GIC)], Fuji II LC (light-curing, GIC), Beautifil (giomer), Compoglass F (compomer), Charisma (composite) and Experimental I (a fluoride releasing composite), with 10 discs for each material. Specimens were dipped in 5 ml deionized water and F(-) release was detected using a fluoride-specific ion electrode every day from 1-7 days and every three days from 8-28 days. On day 28, specimens were exposed to a fluoride foam for 4 min and then dipped in water, then the F(-) concentration was detected every day for a week. The specimens were exposed to fluoride foam and fluoride release was detected repeatedly for three times. RESULTS:All materials presented the highest F(-) release on the first day after dipping and the F(-) release sharply decreased after 24 h and slowly decreased after 3 days. On the first day, Fuji VII presented the highest F(-) release[(99.68±15.21) µg×cm(-2)×d(-1)], followed by Fuji II LC [(37.12±1.67) µg×cm(-2)×d(-1)], Experimental I [(22.93±1.53) µg×cm(-2)×d(-1)], Compoglass F[(15.28±0.70) µg×cm(-2)×d(-1)], Beautifil[(2.40±0.52) µg×cm(-2)×d(-1)] and Charisma[(0.11±0.02) µg×cm(-2)×d(-1)]. Within 28 days of dipping, both Fuji VII and Fuji II LC released more F(-) than other materials did(P < 0.05), followed by Compoglass F and Experimental I, and Beautifil and Charisma released the least F(-)(P < 0.01). After F(-) uptake, all materials released the highest F- on the first day and presented sharply decrease after 24 h and slowly decrease after 2 days. On the first day after F(-) uptake, Fuji VII presented the highest F(-) release (>40 µg×cm(-2) ×d(-1)), much more than other materials(P < 0.01), followed by Fuji II LC(>25 µg×cm(-2) ×d(-1)). Beautifil, Compoglass F and Experimental I were close in F(-) release value(15- 20 µg × cm(-2) × d(-1)), and Charisma showed the lowest F(-) release. CONCLUSIONS:Two glass ionomers were shown to have highest capacity in F(-) release and uptake, followed by compomer and fluoride releasing composite. Composite demonstrated the lowest F(-) release and uptake and Giomer was comparable to composite in F(-) release and to compomer and fluoride releasing composite in F(-) uptake.

Meanwhile, fluoride-containing materials showed larger values of water sorption (13.05-31.64 micrograms/mm3) and dissolution(5.88-24.80 micrograms/mm3) than controls.CONCLUSIONS:The F- releasing may affect physical and mechanical properties of fluoride-containing composites.
Study on the mechanical and aging properties of an antibacterial composite resin loaded with fluoride-doped nano-zirconia fillers

Abstract:Preventing the occurrence of secondary caries serves as one of the significant issues in dental clinic, thus make it indispensable to improving the properties of conventional composite resin (CR) by developing a novel CR. In present study, two groups of experimental CRs loaded with different contents of fluoride-doped nano-zirconia fillers (25 wt% and 50 wt%) were fabricated. The surface topography, mechanical performance, fluoride release, antibacterial effect, aging property and cytotoxicity of the experimental CRs were evaluated subsequently. A uniform distribution of the F-zirconia fillers over the whole surface of resin matrix could be observed. The experimental CRs showed continuous fluoride release within 28 days, which was positively correlated with the content of F-zirconia fillers. Moreover, the amount of fluoride release increased in the acidic buffer. Addition of F-zirconia fillers could improve the color stability, wear resistance and microhardness of the experimental CRs, without reducing the flexure strength. Furtherly, the fluoride ions released continuously from the experimental CRs resulted in effective contact and antibacterial properties, while they showed no cytotoxicity. As a consequence, considerations can be made to employ this new kind of composite resin loaded with fluoride-doped nano-zirconia fillers to meet clinical requirements when the antimicrobial benefits are desired.

Abstract:The anticariogenic effect of silicate cement is well known and considered a result of fluoride release. In several studies a similar fluoride release from conventional glass-ionomer cement (GIC) has been established. Therefore, an anticariogenic effect may be predicted from the GICs too. In my studies the fluoride release was studied by exposing the test specimens to a continuous flow of running tap water. At certain time periods the specimens were transferred for 1 week in a small amount of deionized water (5 ml). The determination of the fluoride content of the solution showed the fluoride release of the material at that time. There was an initial 'burst' effect of fluoride release and then the release gradually decreased, settling at a constant level. The long-term release from conventional GICs was shown to remain on the same level for at least 8 years. The amount of the constant release did not differ much between different brands. Resin-modified GICs released fluoride to the same extent and in the similar way as conventional GICs whereas polyacid-modified composites ('compomers') did not show an initial fluoride 'burst' effect. To study the fluoride binding ability of GICs, specimens which had been exposed to running water for different periods of time were treated with a 50 ppm fluoride solution. After this 'recharging' GIC and resin-modified GIC specimens released more than twice the amount of fluoride released before the treatment. The fluoride treatment had no effect on polyacid-modified composites or on fluoride-containing composites or on the amalgams. To get an impression of the clinical effect of GICs a questionnaire was handed out to practitioners attending courses in the Nordic countries and in Australia during the period 1991-1992 which resulted in 954 answers. Among other questions, the dentists were asked if they had observed caries and gingival inflammation in association with GIC and composite fillings. According to the opinion of most dentists caries and gingival inflammation had never or only seldom been observed in association with GIC fillings whereas most dentists had observed these complications often in connection with composite restorations.

Abstract:To study fluoride release and its impact on flexural strength of fluoride-containing composites.Experimental composite resins containing 0.3%, 0.6% and 1.2% fluoride (w/w) respectively and non-fluoride control composites were selected, including a compomer and its control composites. The amount of fluoride release in vitro was determined with fluoride ion-sensitive electrode in a 30 day consecutive period. The flexural strength was measured by Autograph Machine before and after releasing fluoride in water.The amount of fluoride release increased (0, 21.98, 43.98 and 99.91 micrograms.cm-2 respectively) and the flexural strength decreased (101.70, 94.29, 82.03 and 79.84 MPa respectively) while fluoride-contents in resins increased (0%, 0.3%, 0.6% and 1.2% respectively). With fluoride release, the flexural strength decreased significantly (P < 0.05).Fluoride release affects mechanical properties of fluoride-containing composites.

Abstract:Background: The effects of topical fluoride applications on the release of monomer ingredients from resin-based dental materials by immersion in various extraction solutions are unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of topical fluorides (APF and NaF) on the elution of residual monomers (Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, UDMA, and HEMA) from resin-based materials. Methods: Ninety specimens were prepared, 30 bulk-fill composite resin, 30 nanohybrid universal composite resin, and 30 polyacid-modified composite resin (compomer). These were randomly divided into three groups based on fluoride application procedures. Each specimen was kept in 75% ethanol solution, and residual monomers released from materials were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after 10 min, 1 h, 24 h, and 30 days. The groups were compared using the Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests. Measurements were analyzed using the Friedman and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Results: Fluoride applications generally had no considerable effect on the amount of residual monomer released from resin-based restorative materials. The amount of monomer release after topical APF application was similar to the release in the control group and was lower than the release in the NaF group. The release of monomers from the resin-based material used in the study did not approach toxic levels at the applied time intervals. The compomer released lower amounts of monomer than other resin-based materials. Conclusions: Fluoride applications do not increase monomer release from resin-based restorative materials. However, compomers should be employed by clinicians due to their lower monomer release compared to other resin restorative materials. The release of monomers from all the resin-based materials did not approach toxic levels at the applied time intervals.

Abstract:The administration of vasodilating agents such as bradykinin and acetylcholine cause an increase in urinary sodium excretion. Yet the mechanisms involved in this natriuretic effect are not clear. Recent studies with another renal vasodilator, secretin have shown this drug also causes a profound increase in renal blood flow but without major changes in sodium excretion. To attempt to delineate the basis of this difference in sodium excretion with these drugs, the renal functional effects of secretin and bradykinin were compared at an equivalent vasodilating dose. Bradykinin increased renal blood flow from 222 to 342 ml/min, urine volume from 0.2 to 1.2 ml/min, and urine sodium excretion from 28 to 115 mueq/min. Urine osmolality fell from 1,230 to 401 mosmol/kg. Secretin caused a comparable increase in renal blood flow (216 to 325 ml/min) while changes in urine flow, sodium excretion, and urine osmolality were significantly less. In further studies papillary plasma flow was estimated using the albumin accumulation technique. Control papillary plasma flow was 29 ml/min per 100 g. Bradykinin increased urinary sodium excretion 108 mueq/min and decreased urinary osmolality from 1,254 to 516 mosmol/kg in association with a rise in papillary plasma flow to 62 ml/min per 100 g. Urine sodium excretion, urinary osmolality, and urine flow rate, as well as papillary plasma flow rate (32 ml/min per 100 g) were unchanged from control when secretin was administered. Studies with acetylcholine were qualitatively similar to those of bradykinin. Renal blood flow increased from 150 to 248 ml/min, urinary sodium excretion increased from 20 to 243 mueq/min, urinary osmolality decreased from 1,237 to 411 mosmol/kg and papillary plasma flow increased from 39 to 52 ml/min per 100 g. It is suggested that the natriuretic effect of some vasodilators is due, at least in part, to alterations in medullary hemodynamics, as evidenced by the increase in papillary plasma flow seen with bradykinin and acetylcholine, but not secretin.
[Aging of Silorane- and Methacrylate-Based Composite Resins: Effects on Color and Translucency].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the color stability and translucency of silorane-based low shrinkage composite after in vitro aging procedures of thermal cycling and water storage respectively, and to compare with those of conventional methacrylate-based posterior composite. METHODS:Three light-cured composite resins, dimethacrylate-based composite A (Filtek™ Z350), B (Filtek™ P60) and silorane-based composite C (Filtek™ P90), were tested in this study. Ten specimens (10 mm in diameter, 1 mm in height) of each composite were prepared. The ten specimens in each group were then divided into two subgroups (n = 5). One subgroup underwent thermal cycling [(5.0 ± 0.5)~(55.0 ± 1.0) °C, 10 000 cycles] and the other was stored in 37 C° distilled water for 180 days. With a spectrophotometer, the CIE L * a * b * parameters of the specimens were tested before and after artificial aging against white, medium grey and black backgrounds, respectively. △E, TP and △TP were calculated and data were analyzed using independent-samples t test and partial analysis (P < 0.05). RESULTS:With regard to color stability, silorane-based composite showed color alteration above the clinically acceptable levels (△E > 3.3), and also showed higher △E with a statistically significant difference in comparison with the other composites (B and C) (P < 0.05) after artificial aging. With regard to translucency, composite C showed more alteration compared with composite B (P < 0.05) after thermal cycling. CONCLUSIONS:It may be concluded that the silorane-based composite underwent greater alteration with regard to color stability and translucency.

Abstract:Dental caries (tooth decay) is the most frequent oral disease in humans. Filling cavities with a dental restorative material is the most common treatment, and glass ionomer cements are the main fluoride ion release restorative materials. The goal of this study was to develop a restorative compound with superior fluoride ion release and recharge abilities. Previously developed fluorinated bentolite and hydrophobized 3YSZ were used as two different inorganic fillers mixed in a bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) matrix. XRD, FTIR, and TGA were used to determine the hydrophobic modification of these two inorganic fillers. In mechanical tests, including diameter tensile strength, flexural strength, and wear resistance, the developed composite resin was significantly superior to the commercial control. A WST-1 assay was used to confirm that the material displayed good biocompatibility. Furthermore, the simulation of the oral environment confirmed that the composite resin had good fluoride ion release and reloading abilities. Thus, the composite resin developed in this study may reduce secondary caries and provide a new choice for future clinical treatments.

Abstract:Objective: To assess deionized water's aging effect on the hardness of four direct tooth colored dental filling materials i.e., Glass Ionomer Cement, Resin Modified Glass Ionomer, Giomer and Compomer.Study Design: An in vitro experimental study performed in triplicates.Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out at PG Laboratory, Department of Science of Dental Materials, Army Medical College, Rawalpindi, Pakistan from February 2023 to August 2023.Methods: Three disc-shaped samples (n=3) of 10 mm diameter and 1 mm thickness of each restorative material were prepared using stainless steel molds per manufacturer's instructions. These disc-shaped samples were then suspended in a 15 mL conical centrifuge tube containing 10 mL deionized water, followed by incubation in a Forced Convection Laboratory Oven at 37 C where these were allowed to age over a period of 1-2 years. Vickers Hardness of each sample was then checked at two-time intervals, i.e., after 24 h setting and after 2.5 years of ageing through the Micro Vickers Hardness Tester calibrated at 1Kgf (9.80 N) with dwell time of 10 seconds and light intensity 10. Results: After one day (24 h) aging in deionized water, maximum mean Vickers hardness number (VHN) was exhibited by Compomer (539.83±58.08 VHN) and least by GIC (175.75±24.47 VHN). After aging the sample for 912 days, maximum mean VHN was observed for GIC (420.67±99.66 VHN) and least by Compomer (354.33±9.22 VHN). Conclusion: RMGIC sustains its hardness on aging, hardness of GIC increases while that of Giomer and Compomer decreases upon aging. In Vitro Optical and Physical Stability of Resin Composite Materials with Different Filler Characteristics

Abstract:The objective of this study was to compare the physical and optical stability of resin composite materials with different filler characteristics. Ninety-six resin composite blocks (6 mm × 6 mm × 2 mm) were prepared using four different types of resin composite, divided into four groups. Specimens from the same material were randomly divided into four groups (n = 6) and allocated for Vickers hardness (VH), water sorption, solubility (WS/SL), and staining and aging challenges tests. One-way ANOVA showed significant differences in microhardness (p = 0.0001), WS (p = 0.0001), and SL (p = 0.003) among the tested groups. Beautifil II LS recorded the highest hardness, and CharmFil®Flow had the lowest value. Beautifil Injectable X and II LS showed negative WS, whereas the other groups had positive values. All groups showed positive SL. Repeated measures ANOVA showed significant color parameter alteration in the tested groups (p = 0.0001). All groups showed significant color shifting after one week of the staining challenge. Repeated measures ANOVA showed a significant color parameter (p = 0.0001) and weight (p = 0.001) alteration after the aging challenge. The optical and physical stability of resin composites may vary according to filler characteristics. Clinicians should choose the composite as per the desired outcome.

Abstract:This study aimed to compare the fluoride-releasing ability and degree of microbial attachment of a newly developed glass-hybrid restorative material (GH) with those of a high-viscosity glass ionomer (HvGIC), resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI), and composite resin (CR). In addition, the correlation between fluoride-releasing ability and microbial attachment between materials was evaluated. Specimens were prepared in a disc shape and divided into 4 groups according to the materials (GH, HvGIC, RMGI, and CR). The fluoride release experiments were performed in each group (n = 15). The amount of fluoride released was measured on days 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, and 42 after storage. For the microbial attachment experiment, 12 specimens were produced per group using Mutans Streptococci ( S.mutans ), a cariogenic microorganism. S. mutans was cultured on the specimens for 24 hours, and the number of bacteria was measured. GH had the highest cumulative fluoride release and showed a significant difference when compared with RMGI ( p = 0.001) and CR ( p < 0.0001). Microbial attachment was the lowest in GH; however, no significant difference was observed between the materials ( p = 0.169). There was no significant correlation between fluoride release from materials and microbial attachment ( p > 0.05). From this perspective, remineralization of low-mineralized areas could be expected due to the high fluoride release of GH, and the effect of delaying the progression of dental caries could be predicted from the low cariogenic microbial attachment. Therefore, GH might be a useful restorative material for treating immature permanent teeth with hypomineralized enamel. However, further studies are needed about the degree of remineralization of hypomineralized areas after restoration and the capacity to recharge fluoride.

Abstract:Background: Discoloration of composite restorations may affecting aesthetic appearance. The aging-process and surface roughness may influence color changes. A nanofilled self-adhesive protecting coating has been developed for coating tooth restoration and expected to prolong the longevity of restoration. To evaluate the effect of nanofilled self-adhesive protective coating on the surface roughness and color-changes of flowable and packable composite after aging condition. Methods: The total of 40 discs (15x2mm) and 60 boxes (20×10× 2mm) specimens from flowable and packable composite were used. A half of the specimens was coated by using protective-coating. The reflectance chromameter was used to measure the color baseline. Afterward, the specimens were subjected into aging process by immersing in artificial saliva and carbonated drink (37oC,7d). The color changes were calculated based on the [CIE L*a*b*].For surface roughness, box-shaped specimens were measured in fresh condition, after aging conditions. Results: The color change ranged from 0.49 to 2.31. Applying protective-coating was associated with a significant decrease in the color-changes and surface roughness after aging. The changes of three color coordinates resulted in significant differences for both composite, with and without protective coating application. Conclusion: The application of protective-coating decrease the color-changes and surface roughness of flowable and packable composite-resin.
The impact of in vitro aging on the mechanical and optical properties of indirect veneering composite resins

Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Flexural strength, hardness, surface roughness, discoloration, and abrasion resistance are important properties of veneering composite resins. Recently introduced veneering resins are purported to have enhanced mechanical properties due to their composition, but their long-term durability is not known.PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the impact of aging on 3 different veneering composite resins.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Indirect composite resins, GC Gradia, VITA VM LC, and Sinfony were prepared for flexural strength (n=165 per group), Martens hardness (n=10), surface roughness (n=10), discoloration measurement (n=30), and abrasion resistance (n=6) testing. After initial flexural strength measurement, the remaining specimens were stored in water or subjected to thermocycling for 1, 7, 28, 90, or 180 days, and hardness and surface roughness (water stored: n=5 and thermocycling: n=5) were tested. The discoloration specimens were divided into 3 groups: coffee, black tea, and red wine; n=10), and age and discoloration were measured. Abrasion resistance was determined after 120,000, 240,000, 640,000, and 1,200,000 mechanical thermocycling loading. One-way ANOVA was used, followed by a post hoc Scheffé test and t test. The longitudinal observations were analyzed by using linear mixed models (α=.05).RESULTS: When considering all 5 of the properties tested, Sinfony demonstrated the best results, followed by GC Gradia and VITA VM LC.CONCLUSIONS: The veneering composite resin, Sinfony, showed the most stable properties.
Influence of aging solutions on wear resistance and hardness of selected resin-based dental composites

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different plasticizing aging solutions on wear resistance and hardness of selected universal resin-based dental composites. Methods: Three light cured (one nanofilled, two microhybride) and one hybride chemical cured composites were aged at 37 °C for 48 h in distillated water, ethyl alcohol solution or Listerine mouthwash. After aging the microhardness tests were carried out and then tribological tests were performed in the presence of aging solution at 37 °C. During wear testing coefficients of friction were determined. The maximal vertical loss in micrometers was determined with profilometer. Results: Aging in all liquids resulted in a significant decrease in hardness of the test materials, with the largest values obtained successively in ethanol solution, mouthwash and water. The effect of the liquid was dependent on the particular material, but not the type of material (interpreted as the size of filler used). Introduction of mouthwash instead of water or ethanol solution resulted in a significant reduction in the coefficient of friction. The lowest wear resistance was registered after aging in ethanol and for the chemical cured hybrid composite, but the vertical loss was strongly material dependent. Conclusions: The effect of different aging solution, including commercial mouthrinse, on hardness and wear was material dependent, and cannot be deduced from their category or filler loading. There is no simple correlation between hardness of resin-based dental composites and their wear resistance, but softening of particular composites materials during aging leads to the reduction of its wear resistance.

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of food-simulating liquids (FSLs) and thermal aging on the surface roughness and color stability of bulk-fill and conventional composites. Materials and Methods: A total of 320 disc-shaped samples were prepared, with 40 samples from each of 4 different bulk-fill composites (Filtek Bulk Fill, X-tra fil, Beautifil Bulk Restorative, and Estelite Bulk Fill Flow), and 4 conventional nano-filled composite resins (Filtek Z550, CeramX SphereTEC one, Admira, and Kalore). The prepared samples were randomly divided into subgroups for exposure to FSLs (ethanol, heptane, citric acid) and thermal cycling (TC) (n=10 per subgroup) for 28 days. Initial profilometric surface roughness measurements (Ra0) of all samples and AFM and SEM analyses of selected samples were followed by exposure to FSLs and TC. After completion of aging protocols, measurements and analyses were repeated to obtain the Ra1 (post-treatment surface roughness), and change in surface roughness (∆Ra1-0) was then calculated. Subsequently, initial color measurement of the samples was conducted using a spectrophotometer, followed by immersion of the samples in a coffee solution for 24 hours. Color measurements were repeated, and color change (∆E) was calculated. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare Ra0 and Ra1 values and one-way ANOVA for comparing ∆Ra and ∆E values. Tukey and post hoc tests were employed for pairwise comparisons. The significance level was set at α=.05. Results: While the surface roughness of bulk-fill composites was affected by the protocols applied (p<0.05), conventional composites generally remained unaffected. Bulk-fill composites exhibited greater ΔRa and ∆E values. The highest ∆Ra and ∆E values were observed in the Beautifil Bulk Restorative group, with the greatest discoloration seen after immersion in citric acid. Conclusions: Thermal cycling and immersion in FSLs affect surface roughness and color stability of composite resins depending on the content and structure of the composites.
Changes in Gloss Alteration, Surface Roughness, and Color of Direct Dental Restorative Materials after Professional Dental Prophylaxis

Abstract:In the context of optimizing dental care for patients who are elderly, the purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the surface gloss (with a micro-area gloss meter) of, surface roughness (with a compact surface roughness measuring instrument) of, and color change (with a dental colorimeter) in two commercially available injectable resin-based composites (Estelite Universal Flow (EUF) and Beautifil Flow Plus F00 (BFP)) as well as two glass-ionomer cements (GC Fuji II LC CAPSULE (FLC) and GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA CAPSULE (FGP)), before and after dental prophylaxis. After 24 h, the surfaces of each specimen were polished at 2500 rpm with a prophy brush (Mersage Brush, Shofu) and one-step prophylaxis paste (Prophy Paste Pro, Directa): under 100 or 300 gf load, and for 10 or 30 s, 4× cycles of cleaning. After mechanical cleaning, conditions were found for a significant reduction in the gloss level (EUF, BFP, or FLC; p < 0.05) and a significant increase in surface roughness (BFP; 300 gf load, 10 s × four cycles of cleaning). Overall, the longer time or higher prophylaxis load tended to decrease the surface gloss. However, the observed change in surface roughness varied between the restorative materials. There was no color change post-prophylaxis.
