Abstract:Context: The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, represent an unprecedented exposure to trauma in the United States. Objectives: To assess psychological symptom levels in the United States following the events of September 11 and to examine the association between postattack symptoms and a variety of indices of exposure to the events. Design: Web-based epidemiological survey of a nationally representative cross-sectional sample using the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Checklist and the Brief Symptom Inventory, administered 1 to 2 months following the attacks. Setting and participants: Sample of 2273 adults, including oversamples of the New York, NY, and Washington, DC, metropolitan areas. Main outcome measures: Self-reports of the symptoms of PTSD and of clinically significant nonspecific psychological distress; adult reports of symptoms of distress among children living in their households. Results: The prevalence of probable PTSD was significantly higher in the New York City metropolitan area (11.2%) than in Washington, DC (2.7%), other major metropolitan areas (3.6%), and the rest of the country (4.0%). A broader measure of clinically significant psychological distress suggests that overall distress levels across the country, however, were within expected ranges for a general community sample. In multivariate models, sex, age, direct exposure to the attacks, and the amount of time spent viewing TV coverage of the attacks on September 11 and the few days afterward were associated with PTSD symptom levels; sex, the number of hours of television coverage viewed, and an index of the content of that coverage were associated with the broader distress measure. More than 60% of adults in New York City households with children reported that 1 or more children were upset by the attacks. Conclusions: One to 2 months following the events of September 11, probable PTSD was associated with direct exposure to the terrorist attacks among adults, and the prevalence in the New York City metropolitan area was substantially higher than elsewhere in the country. However, overall distress levels in the country were within normal ranges. Further research should document the course of symptoms and recovery among adults following exposure to the events of September 11 and further specify the types and severity of distress in children.

Abstract:The new procedure of protein fragmentation with o-iodosobenzoic acid (Mahoney & Hermodson, 1979; Biochemistry, 18, 3810-3814) was used to split three tryptophanyl peptide bonds in glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.2.1.12) from human skeletal muscle. The mixture obtained was separated into four homogeneous peptides by a one-step chromatographic procedure. High specificity of the cleavage reaction was proved by the amino acid analysis and determination of the N-terminal sequence of the peptide products. Both specificity ahd high yield obtained by this procedure confirmed its utility in the establishment of the protein primary structure.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE Several studies have demonstrated that endothelial dysfunction plays a central role in diabetic mortality and that the prooxidative effect of postprandial hyperglycemia may actively contribute to atherogenesis. Thus, we investigated the possible effect of short-acting (repaglinide) and long-acting (glibenclamide) insulin secretagogues on endothelial function in type 2 diabetic patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Sixteen type 2 diabetic patients undergoing diet treatment and with poor glucose control volunteered for the study. The study was designed as a 4-month, randomized, cross-over, parallel-group trial of repaglinide (1 mg twice a day) versus glibenclamide (5 mg twice a day). All patients underwent the following investigations: 1) anthropometrics determinations, 2) blood sampling for routine laboratory analyses and for assessment of oxidative stress indexes, and 3) a brachial reactivity test to evaluate the endothelial function through the study of arterial diameter and flow changes with and without intraarterial infusion of N(G)-monomethyl-l-arginine, an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase and tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA), a Ca(2+)-activated K(+) (K(Ca)) channel blocker. All patients were randomly assigned to receive repaglinide or glibenclamide for a period of 4 weeks. RESULTS Repaglinide administration was associated with a significant reduction in 2-h plasma glucose levels (P < 0.001) and in plasma thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) concentrations (P < 0.001) and with a significant increase in plasma antioxidant power, assessed as Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) (P < 0.001), effects not observed after glibenclamide administration. With regard to brachial reactivity parameters, repaglinide but not glibenclamide was associated with a significant improvement in brachial reactivity parameters (P < 0.003 for all parameters). In contrast, intra-arterial infusion of L-NMMA and TEA reduced the beneficial effect of repaglinide. CONCLUSIONS Repaglinide administration, through good control of postprandial glucose levels, improves brachial reactivity and declines oxidative stress indexes.

Abstract:Terrorist attacks and their aftermath have had a powerful impact on children and their families. Media and television exposure of terrorist events throughout the world has increased during the past few years. There is increasing concern about the effects of this exposure on children who witness these violent images. To develop a proactive and strategic response to reactions of fear, clinicians, educators, and policy makers must understand the psychologic effects of media coverage of terrorism on children. Previous research has focused on media coverage of criminal violence and war. Recent studies have examined the effect of remote exposure of terrorist attacks and have shown a significant clinical impact on children and families.
Pre-attack symptomatology and temperament as predictors of children's responses to the September 11 terrorist attacks

Abstract:Background: The aims of this study were to assess the psychological response of children following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, DC and to examine prospective predictors of children's post-attack responses. Method: Children's responses were assessed in a community sample of children in Seattle, Washington, participating in an ongoing study. Symptomatology and temperament assessed prior to the attacks were examined as prospective predictors of post-attack post-traumatic stress (PTS), anxiety, depression and externalizing problems. Results: Children demonstrated PTS symptoms and worries at levels comparable to those in children directly experiencing disasters, with 77% of children reporting being worried, 68% being upset by reminders, and 39% having upsetting thoughts. The most common PTS symptom cluster was re-experiencing, and 8% of children met criteria consistent with PTSD. African-American children reported more avoidant PTS symptoms and being more upset by the attacks than European-American children. Girls reported being more upset than boys. Prior internalizing, externalizing, social competence and self-esteem were related to post-attack PTS; and child inhibitory control, assessed prior to the 9/11 attacks, demonstrated a trend towards an association with post-attack PTS symptoms controlling for prior levels of symptomatology. PTS predicted child-report anxiety and conduct problem symptoms at follow-up, approximately 6 months after 9/11. Conclusions: Children experiencing a major disaster at a distance or indirectly through media exposure demonstrated worries and PTS symptoms suggesting that communities need to attend to children's mental health needs in response to national or regional disasters. Pre-disaster symptomatology or low self-regulation may render children more vulnerable in response to a disaster, and immediate post-disaster responses predict subsequent symptomatology. These variables might be used in the identification of children in need of intervention.
A snapshot of terror: acute posttraumatic responses to the September 11 attack

Abstract:This paper reports on acute posttraumatic reactions and forms of coping to the September 11 attack. We conducted a survey within three weeks of the attack on a nationwide, representative sample of individuals 13 years or older (N = 3,134). Measures included the Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire (SASRQ), the brief version of the COPE, and questions about demographics and attitudes toward the attackers. Results show that residents of New York City--women, young adults (but not teens), and people recently immigrated into the country--experienced more distress about the attack. There was a positive linear association between hours of watching TV news related to the attack and distress, and a small positive association between hostility toward the perpetrators, TV watching, and distress. Income, religion, education, and ethnicity did not have an effect on distress. Maladaptive coping strategies and TV watching explained considerably more variance than did demographics. Reactions to acute trauma seem to depend on the lack of appropriate coping strategies. The curvilinear relationship between age and posttraumatic distress suggests caution when interpreting previous findings about age and posttraumatic reactions. The association between media exposure, coping styles, and acute distress among teens extends previous findings and deserves further investigation.

Abstract:Consumer behavior in the omnipresent mobile environment constitutes a challenge for m-commerce vendors, as they seek to understand factors that affect it, positively and negatively, and to integrate social media in their mobile strategy. This paper presents an exploratory qualitative study about the use of smartphones and social media, in the context of m-commerce. The authors' objective is to facilitate the understanding of consumers' perceptions and behavior in m-commerce and social media and explore the potential of social media for m-commerce purposes. The results of their qualitative analysis show that reputation, design aspects, such as ease of use, as well as privacy and security are important factors for m-commerce and social media adoption and use. Their qualitative results also reveal factors having a negative effect to m-commerce. Business opportunities enabled by social media for m-commerce and how these can be leveraged in this promising mobile context are also discussed.

Abstract:A combination of analytical, numerical, and qualitative methods is used to study competing equilibrium orientational configurations in a liquid-crystal thin film. The material is a cholesteric liquid crystal and has a negative dielectric anisotropy. The system has strong homeotropic anchoring of the liquid-crystal director on the confining substrates and is subject to a voltage applied across the film thickness. A free-energy functional embodies the competing influences of the boundary conditions, the intrinsic chirality of the material, and the electric field. Attention is restricted to director fields that are functions only of the distance across the cell gap. A detailed phase and bifurcation analysis of the two equilibrium configurations of this type is presented;the control parameters are the ratio of the cell gap to the intrinsic pitch of the cholesteric and the applied voltage. The study was motivated by potential technological applications. The phase diagram contains both first-order and second-order transition lines, the former terminating at an isolated point and the latter at a triple point. The voltage-dependent nature of the total twist of the director across the cell is revealed and explained, and an effective upper bound is obtained on the ratio of cell gap to pitch for the system to support a simple voltage-driven second-order transition between the two 1-D equilibrium states.
Disaster at a distance: impact of 9.11.01 televised news coverage on mothers' and children's health

Abstract:Families enrolled in a research program examining children's health behaviors and media habits before September 11, 2001 were analyzed to assess the impact of media coverage of the terrorist attacks on children's and mothers' stress levels, coping strategies, and health behaviors. After the attacks, 68% of mothers and 38% of children reported experiencing one or more symptoms of distress. These results indicate that children were more susceptible to experiencing distress symptoms if their families had preexisting relational difficulties and increased television viewing during the days after the attacks. Implications for research and preventive clinical interventions are discussed.
Reports A Flexible Approach to Parametric Inference in Nonlinear Time Series Models

Abstract:Many structural break and regime-switching models have been used with macroeconomic and financial data. In this paper, we develop an extremely flexible parametric model that accommodates virtually any of these specifications—and does so in a simple way that allows for straightforward Bayesian inference. The basic idea underlying our model is that it adds two concepts to a standard state space framework. These ideas are ordering and distance. By ordering the data in different ways, we can accommodate a wide range of nonlinear time series models. By allowing the state equation variances to depend on the distance between observations, the parameters can evolve in a wide variety of ways, allowing for models that exhibit abrupt change as well as those that permit a gradual evolution of parameters. We show how our model will (approximately) nest almost every popular model in the regime-switching and structural break literatures. Bayesian econometric methods for inference in this model are developed. Because we stay within a state space framework, these methods are relatively straightforward and draw on the existing literature. We use artificial data to show the advantages of our approach and then provide two empirical illustrations involving the modeling of real GDP growth.
Aftermath of Terror: A Nationwide Longitudinal Study of Posttraumatic Stress and Worry Across the Decade Following the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks

Abstract:Research conducted in the early years after the September 11, 2001 (9/11) terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC demonstrated adverse psychological outcomes among residents of the United States who were exposed to the attacks both directly and indirectly via the media. However, less is known about the impact of this collective trauma over time. Beginning at the end of December 2006, a longitudinal study of a nationally representative sample of U.S. residents (Cohort 2, N = 1,613) examined the long-term effects of 9/11, with annual assessments administered every year for 3 years. We assessed rates of 9/11-related posttraumatic stress (PTS) annually during the first 2 years of the study; during the second and third years of the study, we assessed fear and worry regarding future terrorism. Rates of PTS among participants were compared with those assessed annually in a nationally representative sample between 2002 and 2004 (Cohort 1); results indicated a relatively stable pattern of 9/11-related PTS symptoms for 6 years following the attacks. Five to six years after 9/11, we found an association between 9/11-related PTS and both direct, B = 8.45, 95% CI [4.32, 12.59] and media-based (live television), B = 1.78, 95% CI [0.90, 2.65] exposure to the attacks. Six to 7 years post-9/11, fear and worry regarding future terrorism were predicted by 9/11-related PTS symptoms that had been reported approximately 5 years after the attacks, B = 0.04, 95% CI [0.03, 0.05]. The psychological legacy of 9/11 was perceptible among many U.S. residents throughout the decade that followed.
Current affairs and the public psyche: American anxiety in the post 9/11 world

Abstract:Background: The most recent wave of interviews in a longitudinal study spanned the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This unintended "natural experiment" allows examination of effects of traumatic events in ways impossible in studies conducted solely after the event and in populations not previously studied. Methods: Participants were 610 members of the randomly selected Children in the Community cohort studied longitudinally for over 25 years and between ages 27 and 38 at the time of the current in-home interviews. Symptoms of generalized anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, dissociation, and depression were assessed with an adaptation of the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnosis. Changes in self-reported symptoms from an assessment 10 years earlier were related to the date of interview between 7/2001 and 12/2003 by polynomial regression methods, including demographic and design controls. Diagnoses based on clinical follow-up were also examined. Results: In contrast to other data on this cohort where timing effects were absent, levels of symptoms were related to time of interview. The months following 9/11/2001 and the two anniversary periods in 2002 and 2003 showed significant elevation in anxiety symptoms (t = 2.50, df = 608, P = 0.013) with some evidence of elevated anxiety disorder as well (Fisher's exact test P = 0.096). Similar patterns were seen for specific anxiety and depressive symptom groups. Effects of religious participation, patriotism, having offspring, and media exposure on anxiety symptoms tended to differ by season, but the effect of community involvement did not. Proximity to New York City was not significantly related to symptoms. Conclusions: Study findings suggest that young Americans showed symptomatic and, possibly, diagnostic anxiety reactions to the events of 9/11 that persisted in response to heightened awareness of ongoing threat during anniversary periods.

Acute Hemodynamic Effects and Angina Improvement with Enhanced External Counterpulsation

Abstract:Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) is an effective noninvasive treatment for coronary artery disease. The mechanism of action is felt to be hemodynamic. The complex hemody namic effects have been simply quantified by calculating a previously described effectiveness ratio (ER). The EECP Clinical Consortium, a clinical registry of 37 centers, prospectively enrolled 395 chronic stable angina patients (79 women, 316 men, mean age 66 years) to examine the relation of the ER to posttreatment improvement in Canadian Cardiovascular Society angina class (CCS). Women and the elderly underwent planned subgroup analysis. The ER was calcu lated during the first and last hours of a 35-hour course of EECP treatment. After EECP, CCS improved by at least 1 class in 88% of patients, 87% of men and 92% of women (p = NS), and in 89% of patients ≤ 66 years and 88% of patients > 66 years old (p = NS). The initial and final ER were similar in patients with and without improvement in CCS. Significant first-hour ER differences were seen between men and women (0.96 ±0.03 vs 0.76 ±0.04, p < 0.005), and between ages ≤ 66 and > 66 years old (1.04 ±0.04 vs 0.81 ±0.03, p < 0.0001). However, all subgroups responded equally well to EECP treatment. EECP is effective in improving CCS in chronic stable angina patients; it has comparable effects in men and women and across a broad range of ages. The hemodynamic effect of EECP (ER) does not predict improvement in CCS and may indicate that other factors, such as neuro- hormonal changes, may have a significant role in mediating the observed EECP benefits.
Mental health issues and lifestyle changes associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in adolescents: A cross-sectional study in selected schools of Eastern India

Abstract:Background: Due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), adolescents from all over the world have higher rates of anxiety, depression, and stress. This study attempts to assess the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescent mental health and lifestyle issues. The study also focuses on coping strategies adopted by the participants during the pandemic. Materials and methods: It was a cross-sectional study performed among school-going adolescents studying from classes VII to X of selected schools in Bhubaneswar. A semi-structured questionnaire was formed and validated by faculty members of the Departments of Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Community Medicine, IMS and SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, to obtain a detailed history regarding lifestyle changes, mental health issues, and coping strategies. Randomly, three schools were selected in Bhubaneswar. Permission from the principal, informed written consent from parents, and assent from students were obtained before the study. A total of 711 participants were enrolled in the study. All data were entered in an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 26. Results: Middle and high school students also experienced lifestyle changes; however, it was revealed that high school students experienced higher mental health problems, such as mood swings. Additionally, compared to males, girls substantially more frequently experienced academic stress, sleep difficulties, and worry, as well as the development of unhealthy habits. Various coping strategies developed by the students included development of a new hobby (45.4%), spending time with family members (12.8%), learning by playing indoor games (8.4%), computer skills (3.9%), and meditation (2.25%). Conclusions: The lockdown, apprehension of pandemic and associated morbidity, fear of losing loved ones, academic and peer pressures, and sudden adjustment to new study methods contributed to the changes experienced by adolescents physically and mentally; hence, all of these issues were addressed in this study. This study pointed toward the need for the propagation of adolescent mental health awareness during pandemics.
The Role of Core Beliefs Challenge, Subjective Fear, and Intrusive Rumination in Association Between Severity of Traumatic Exposure and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder among Adolescent Survivors after the Yaan Earthquake

Abstract:The Yaan earthquake in 2013, another destructive natural disaster that occurred in Sichuan, China after the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, has caused widespread loss of life and property. Adolescent survivors of this earthquake experienced significant psychological reactions, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often considered to be the most frequent one in the aftermath of disasters. Many researchers, to date, have examined the reason for the high prevalence of PTSD, and found that the severity of traumatic exposure was a precondition of PTSD. However, not all the traumatized people been exposed to traumatic events would experience PTSD. This can be attributed to the differences in cognitive reaction. The shattered world assumption suggests that the extent of core beliefs being challenged by traumatic event can activate the development of different cognitive reactions and elicit the development of PTSD. According to the cognitive evaluation theory, people exposed to traumatic events can also take different strategies to cope the traumatic clues, and negative coping strategies, such as intrusive rumination, are important risk factors for PTSD. What calls for special attention is that both the shattered world assumption and the cognitive evaluation theory emphasize the effect of cognition after traumatic exposure in the developing process of PTSD, and they also share the same limit in clinical intervention for PTSD by ignoring the role of emotion. Thus, some researchers suggest that more attention should be paid to people’s emotive reactions, such as fear, in the PTSD study. And based on the model of fear network, traumatic exposure can make people experience more fear for the trauma, which may in turn increase the likelihood of the appearance of PTSD. While traumatic exposure, core beliefs challenge, intrusive rumination and subjective fear were theoretically speculated as important risk factors, the specific paths how traumatic exposure elicits PTSD by these factors are unclear. Furthermore, the predictive utility of these risk factors has not been evaluated in an integrated model, and the relationship between cognitive reactions and emotive reactions in the developing process of PTSD has not been examined. In addition, previous researchers mainly studied the general adults or college students, and few focused on the adolescent survivors after disaster. Regarding the above limitations, the current study aimed to explore the role of core beliefs challenge, intrusive rumination, and subjective fear in the association between traumatic exposure and PTSD among adolescent survivors six months after the Yaan earthquake. 310 adolescent survivors were selected from several junior and senior middle schools in the county of Lushan, the area most severely affected by the Yaan earthquake. Participants completed Traumatic Exposure Questionnaire, Subjective Fear Questionnaire, Core Beliefs Inventory, The Event Related Rumination Inventory and The Revised Child PTSD Symptom Scale six months after the Yaan earthquake. The results found that both the mean level and the prevalence of PTSD were relatively low. The mean level of PTSD of male students was lower than that of female students, and the mean level of PTSD of grade 1 students in senior middle school was higher than that of all the other grade students who participated in the survey. The analysis of structural equation model found that the severity of traumatic exposure had positive effect on PTSD by core beliefs challenge and by that via the multiple mediator effect of intrusive rumination. Moreover, traumatic exposure could positively affect PTSD by the severity of subjective fear via the multiple mediator effect of intrusive rumination. However, the severity of traumatic exposure had no effect on PTSD by intrusive rumination or subjective fear.

Abstract:A BSTRACT Purpose: To identify the awareness, behaviour and psychological impact of cyberbullying among adolescent. Method: A Cross-sectional questionnaire-based study conducted on secondary school students from grades 9-12 th . The study got approval from the Institutional Research Board. The Inclusion criterion was school students of all nationalities who were willing to participate. Signed informed consent signed was taken. We used a P value of < 0.05 and a 95% confidence interval (CI). Result: Out of 513 enrolled, 450 completed the survey (response rate 87.7%). Age ranged between 13 to 20 years of them 303 (67.3%) were female. Awareness of cyberbullying was 96.2%. The prevalence of cyberbullying among adolescence was 22.2% (95% CI: 18.89-26.93). 42% of Victims reported cyberbully event leading to stoppage in 78.6% of cases. Most of the victims reported to their parents followed by friends then cyber helpline or Police. Characteristics of perpetrators were males, below-average academic performance and social relations, from same batch, and had emotionally unstable personalities. Association of being a victim does not relate to their Age, gender, grade, or parent’s education but relate to their nationality ( P < 0.001) and being younger siblings ( P < 0.027). Association between event reporting and gender was not significant ( P < 0.859). Association between worsening social relationships (teachers and parents) ( P < 0.001), feeling neglected ( P < 0.001), personality type (agreeableness and emotional instability) ( P < 0.016) and being a Cyberbully victim was statistically significant. Association of depression and anxiety with being a cyberbully victim was statistically significant ( P < 0.001) and directly proportional to the severity. Conclusion: High rate of awareness and Low prevalence of cyberbullying was found among adolescence. High risk of psychological problems was reported and a good social relationship (teachers and parents) was an important protective factor from it.
Impact of Use of Social Media on Adolescent's Mental Health in a Tier 2 City—A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background Social media has been defined as a form of electronic communication that is used for communication and expression of thoughts. It is a boon for the young generation as it has a lot of positive impacts like global connectivity, easy/inexpensive communication, and sharing of information; however, it is associated with serious adverse effects/imprints on the mental health of adolescent's developing brain. Method This was an observational, cross-sectional study on 200 students from two government schools. After obtaining consent from parents and teacher, students were asked to fill a preprinted form containing a 12-point survey questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory for assessment of depression, and a 12-Item General Health Questionnaire (12-item GHQ) for the assessment of common mental health disorders. Obtained data was analyzed among social media users and nonusers. Results The study included 200 adolescents, 84 (42%) were of 11th standard and 116 (58%) were of 12th standard. Eighty-five adolescents (42.5%) were males and 115 (57.5%) were females; median age was 14 years. The mean Beck Depression Inventory score among users was 11.47 +7.54 as compared with 6.702 +6.67 among nonusers, p = 0.0005, significant. The mean 12-item GHQ score among users was 7.631 + 5.37 as compared with 7.05 + 5.79 among nonusers, p = 0.5589, insignificant. About 82.8% students used WhatsApp, 39.8% used Facebook, 40.4% used Instagram, 26.9% used Snapchat, and 17.17% used YouTube. Conclusion Majority of adolescents are using social media nowadays and are found to have various mental health problems in this study. This highlights the importance of awareness among parents, teachers, and adolescent health-care providers. Article published online: 05 July 2022 © 2022. Medical and Surgical Update Society.
