Abstract:Objectives: To compare and characterize the ideal nasolabial angle, nasal tip width, and location of the eyebrow apex for Asian and white women. Methods: From approximately January 1, 2005, to June 30, 2005, we photographed the faces of 2 Asian women and 2 white women of differing ages. Each model's image was modified to create different eyebrow shapes, unique nasolabial angles, and varying nasal tip widths. We subsequently recruited, and obtained demographic information from, volunteers from the general public to rate the modified images based on their aesthetic preferences. Results: We found that neither the ethnicity of the models nor the ethnicity of the volunteers who rated them played a significant role in determining the ideal eyebrow apex location, nasolabial angle, or nasal tip width. However, generally speaking, a more lateral brow apex is preferable in younger faces, whereas a more medial apex is favored in older ones. Other preferences include a moderate nasolabial angle and a narrow nasal tip. As a result of individual variability, it has been difficult to establish a method to calculate a nasolabial angle that adequately portrays the apparent rotation of the nose in most people. We found that the angle formed by the line from the anterior columella to the subnasale and the line exactly perpendicular to the Frankfurt horizontal plane provides the best estimate. Conclusions: When planning facial plastic surgery, the goals of the patient are of paramount importance. Although it is important to understand the ways in which people of different ethnicities and ages differ in their facial proportions as a group, facial harmony must be pursued on an individual basis.
The sagittal morphological and clinical application study of nose in Chinese

Abstract:Objective The purpose of this study is to analyze the nasal morphological characteristics in Chinese adult, of Han nationality, by the measurements in sagittal plan and the proportionality between nose and facial structures, in order to provide aesthetic references for rhinoplasty, and individual surgical planning. Methods During 2017 November to December,258 healthy Han Youth volunteers were included. Three-dimensional (3D) models of the facial characteristic information were collected using Artec 3D scanner, by standardized procedures. The nasal and facial distances and angulations were measured, based on predesigned facial landmarks. Thereafter, the proportions of above measurements were calculated. Results There was no significant difference between genders in absolute prominence. As for relative prominence, male nose is more prominent, resulted in a more stereoscopic facial profile. The nasal basal plane of both male and female, was more anterior than the infraorbital points, with 7％ of the absolute degree of the infraorbital points. The range of the angle between the nasal basal plane and coronal plane was 2-4 degrees. Conclusions This study sets a database for the external nasal characteristics of the young adult in Chinese Han nationality, which could provide quantitative references for preoperative evaluation and individually surgical planning.
Comparison of maxillary anterior tooth width and facial dimensions of 3 ethnicities

Abstract:Statement of problem: As the cosmetic demands of patients increase, determining the appropriate dimensions of the maxillary anterior teeth has become increasingly relevant. The relationship between facial measurements and tooth size provide guidance for maxillary anterior tooth size selection. However, most publications on this topic have focused on the white population, and more data for tooth sizes and their proportions in other ethnicities are needed. Purpose: The purpose of this observational study was to investigate the relationship between the mesiodistal dimensions of the 6 maxillary anterior teeth and the bizygomatic width, interpupillary distance, intercanthal distance, interalar width, and intercommissural width of individuals of Asian, African-American, and white ethnicities. Material and methods: Standardized digital images of 360 participants (120 Asian, 120 African-American, and 120 white) were used to measure facial segments. Individual dimensions of the 6 maxillary anterior teeth were measured using stone casts with digital sliding caliper. The combined width of the 6 maxillary anterior teeth on a straight line corresponded to the sum of the anterior tooth width. The means and standard deviations from descriptive measurements were calculated and analyzed for face and maxillary anterior tooth ratios and correlations. Statistical analysis was done using the Kruskal-Wallis procedure to compare facial and tooth parameters among the 3 ethnicities. Appropriate post hoc comparisons that adjusted for multiple testing were conducted when warranted (α=.05). The Spearman rho correlation, a nonparametric correlate of the Pearson correlation, was used to associate the facial and tooth parameters within the strata of sex and ethnicity. Results: No consistent ratios were found among the examined facial dimensions and the mesiodistal dimensions of the 6 maxillary anterior teeth among the 3 ethnicities, except for the central incisor width-to-bizygomatic width ratio. No correlations were found between the facial dimensions and mesiodistal dimensions of the 6 maxillary anterior teeth among the 3 ethnicities except in Asian women. For Asian women, the intercommissural width correlated with the width of the central incisor (P=.001), the width of 2 central incisors (P=.001), the width of 4 incisors (P=.003), and the width of 6 maxillary anterior teeth (P=.005). Conclusions: No facial proportions by which the exact width of maxillary anterior teeth could be predicted were found in Asian, African-American, or white populations.
The Ideal Nasal Tip Projection and Rotation Angles in Chinese: A Preference Analysis of the General Population

Abstract:Rhinoplasty to reshape the nasal tip is increasingly popular among Chinese women. Aesthetic standards vary across different ethnic groups and it is key to identify preferences for the ideal nasal tip in China to set surgical goals. Therefore, we administered an online survey to plastic surgeons and the public through social media to rank nasal tip images by aesthetic preference. Images were created from a single photograph to show various dimensions of nasal tip projection to nasal dorsum length ratio (NTP/NDL) and nasal labial angle (NLA). Preferences were compared by age, sex, living area, ethnic background, occupation, and history of plastic procedures on respondents' preferences. Overall, there were 703 respondents, including 441 (63%) women and 50 plastic surgeons. Nasal tip projection to nasal dorsum length ratio of 0.63 was ranked highest by all demographic groups, including women (47%), men (50%), and plastic surgeons (66%). Nasal labial angle of 106° was first choice overall and preferred by 34%, 34%, and 52%, respectively. Preferences followed a bell curve for NTP/NDL and NLA, with lower rates of preference as parameters diverged further from the first choice. The preference for NTP/NDL of 0.63 and NLA of 106° was conserved across surgeons, lay people, and all demographic groups. The authors suggest that these proportions could be used as reference for preoperative design in rhinoplasty.
Contribution of lip proportions to facial aesthetics in different ethnicities: a three-dimensional analysis

Abstract:Background: Lip augmentations are commonly performed procedures in the United States, with annual numbers surpassing 100 000. While lips contribute to facial beauty, the relative influence of this feature to whole facial appeal has not yet been established. What is also of increasing interest is the consideration of ethnic differences in the evaluation of beauty. However, most current anthropometric measurements refer to Caucasians, and their use in the treatment of Asian American patients would be inappropriate. Methods: Three-dimensional models of 197 male and female Caucasian, Chinese and Korean subjects were created using surface-imaging technology. The lips and corresponding faces from these models were ranked according to subjective aesthetic appeal by 20 male and female raters of various ages, occupations and ethnicities. The raters' results were subsequently compared with individually measured lip parameters. Results: Rankings between lips and their corresponding whole faces differed greatly. Lips that were rated as the most attractive were smaller than average in midline upper lip surface heights, bilateral paramedian lip surface heights, upper lip angles and volume in the lower lip. Both Asian groups exhibited significantly different lip parameters and lip-projection volumes from that of Caucasians. Conclusions: The results from this study suggest that there are indeed measurable differences in the baseline Asian lip morphology as compared with Caucasians. Tailoring lip enhancement treatment to each individual's anatomy, ethnic background and personal goals can optimise outcomes. What is also of interest is that lips did not contribute as much to facial attractiveness as previously thought.
Three-Dimensional M-Shaped Resection for Nasal Alar Hypertrophy in Asian Patients

Abstract:Background Nasal alarplasty is an important component of esthetic rhinoplasty in Asians. The two main surgical techniques that correct alar hypertrophy by reducing the height or length often leave external scars and are associated with a high relapse rate. Methods We developed a new technique, called three-dimensional（3 D） M-shaped resection, which corrects both the nasal alar height and length and simultaneously minimizes external scarring. We performed this procedure from January 2013 to September 2016 in 49 consecutive female patients diagnosed with saddle nose and nasal alar hypertrophy. Their mean age was 28.6（range, 18–40） years. All patients had previously undergone simple rhinoplasty. Nasal alar length and height, nostril length and width, and maximal nose width were analyzed preoperatively and postoperatively from photographs. Results After a mean of 9（range, 3–24） months of follow-up, surgery was considered successful in 46 women（94%） with good cosmetic effects. In three patients, nasal alar hypertrophy recurred（6 months postoperatively）. There were no early complications such as hematomas, infections, skin or mucosal necrosis, or wound dehiscence. The mean reductions postoperatively were 1.7 mm and 0.9 mm for nasal alar length and height, respectively, 1.6 mm for both nostril length and width, and 3.5 mm for nose width.Conclusion The 3 D M-shaped resection for nasal alar hypertrophy effectively reduced hypertrophy in 94% of patients for up to 24 months, producing minimal external scars and good cosmetic effects. It is a simple and convenient technique that is an effective and safe option for nasal alarplasty.
Anatomical Study of Nasal Septal Cartilage in Eastern Chinese

Abstract:Background: Asians tend to have foreshortened noses with more increased nostril show. In recent years, the nasal septal cartilage has been widely used in caudal septal advancement and nasal tip projection in East Asian. However, a relatively small quantity of less firm nasal cartilage was observed in East Asians compared with Caucasians and very few articles have been found dealing with septal cartilage anatomy of Chinese. Objective: The length, height, area, and thickness of nasal septal cartilage in 10 eastern Chinese were studied to provide anatomic data for the septorhinoplasty or harvesting of cartilage graft. Methods: The septal cartilages in 10 adult cadavers were anatomized and measured for their length, height, area, and thickness. Results: The average length and height of septal cartilage were respectively 2.83±0.47 cm and 2.41±0.39 cm. The average area was 4.94±1.26 cm^2. The average thickness is 0.97±0.15 mm, with the greatest thickness in region b 1.14±0.26 mm, the least thickness in region e (0.83±0.22) mm and region a (0.81±0.27) mm. Conclusion: The findings of this study reinforce the principle of key differences existing in the anatomic data of the septal cartilage between Asians and Caucasians.

Effect of various facial angles and measurements on the ideal position of the nasal tip in the Asian patient population

Abstract:Importance: Successful surgical correction of nasal tip position requires preoperative analysis. Perceived adequate nasal tip position depends on its relationship with other facial features. Nasal tip position can be affected by the subnasal contour, proportion of facial height, and relative facial size and shape. The relation of these factors to the nasolabial angle may not be as important as previously believed. Objective: To investigate and compare the factors affecting the ideal location of the tip of the nose in Asian patients using standard photographic measurements. Design: We analyzed measurements of profile photographs and compared different factors that affect nasal tip location, including the nasofrontal, nasolabial, nasomental, and Legan angles and the ratios of the dorsal height to tip projection, the radix height to tip projection, the glabella to subnasale, and the subnasale to mentum. Setting and participants: One hundred men, 100 women, 20 to 40 years old, seen for rhinoplasty at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Chosun University College of Medicine. Main outcome and measures: Contribution of different facial measurements to the ideal nasal tip position. Results: Nasolabial and nasomental angles exerted a statistically significant effect on ideal nasal tip position, whereas the Legane angle, the ratio of midface to lower face, and the ratio of nasal length to lower face did not show significant effects on nasal tip position. Conclusions and relevance: The nasolabial and nasomental angles have important effects on ideal nasal tip position and should be considered together during preoperative evaluation of the location of the nasal tip. Concurrent genioplasty should optimize rhinoplasty outcomes in appropriately selected patients. Level of evidence: NA.

Abstract:Valence photoelectron (PE) spectra have been measured for ReO(3)Me using a synchrotron source for photon energies ranging between 20 and 110 eV. Derived branching ratios (BR) and relative partial photoionization cross sections (RPPICS) are interpreted in the context of a bonding model calculated using density functional theory (DFT). Agreement between calculated and observed ionization energies (IE) is excellent. The 5d character of the orbitals correlates with the 5p --> 5d resonances of the associated RPPICS; these resonances commence around 47 eV. Bands with 5d character also show a RPPICS maximum at 35 eV. The RPPICS associated with the totally symmetric 4a(1) orbital, which has s-like character, shows an additional shape resonance with an onset of 43 eV. The PE spectrum of the inner valence and core region measured with photon energies of 108 and 210 eV shows ionization associated with C 2s, O 2s, and Re 4f and 5p electrons. Absorption spectra measured in the region of the O1s edge showed structure assignable to excitation to the low lying empty "d" orbitals of this d(0) molecule. The separation of the absorption bands corresponded with the calculated orbital splitting and their intensity with the calculated O 2p character. Broad bands associated with Re 4d absorption were assigned to (2)D(5/2) and (2)D(3/2) hole states. Structure was observed associated with the C1s edge but instrumental factors prevented firm assignment. At the Re 5p edge, structure was observed on the (2)P(3/2) absorption band resulting from excitation to the empty "d" levels. The intensity ratios differed from that of the O 1s edge structure but were in good agreement with the calculated 5d character of these orbitals. An absorption was observed at 45 eV, which, in the light of the resonance in the 4a(1) RPPICS, is assigned to a 4a(1) --> ne, na(2) transition. The electronic structure established for ReO(3)Me differs substantially from that of TiCl(3)Me and accounts for the difference in chemical behavior found for the two complexes.
Nasal characteristics in patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism

Abstract:Introduction: To objectively quantify nasal characteristics of patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism and to evaluate the association between nasal asymmetry and dentofacial abnormalities. Methods: Ninety adult patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism were included. Images were captured during pretreatment us-ing 3-dimensional stereophotogrammetry. A total of 7160 uniformly sampled quasi-landmarks were automatically identified on each facial image to establish correspondence using a template mapping technique. Fifteen commonly used anatomic landmarks were automatically located on each image through barycentric to Cartesian coordinate conversion. Nasal characteristics and asymmetry were quantified by anthropometric linear distances, angular measurements, and surface-based analysis. The degree of the nasal, chin, and periorbital asymmetry in a patient was scored using a root-mean-squared error between the left and right sides. The correlations among these regional asymmetries were evaluated. Results: The nasal tip was significantly shifted to the deviated side of the chin, and the nostrils were asymmetrical. The location and degree of nasal asymmetry varied among patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism. The level of nasal asymmetry was significantly and positively correlated with chin and periorbital asymmetry. Conclusions: Nasal asymmetry is present in asymmetric mandibular prognathism patients. Furthermore, it is positively associated with periorbital deviation and chin deviation. Individualized nasal asymmetry evaluation should be performed, and clinicians should inform patients about preexisting nasal asymmetry.

Abstract:The nasal cavity constitutes the foremost portion of the respiratory system, composed of the anterior nasal aperture, nostrils, and choanae. It has an intricate anatomical structure since it has various functions, such as heat exchange, humidification, and filtration. Accordingly, clinical symptoms related to the nose, such as nasal congestion, snoring, and nasal septal deviation, are closely linked to the complex anatomical structure of the nasal cavity. Thus, the nasal cavity stands as a paramount structure in both forensic and clinical contexts. The majority of relevant studies have performed comparisons between sexes, with studies making comparisons according to the FI and NI only and examining relative percentages. Furthermore, the nasal cavity was measured in 2D, and not 3D, in most cases. In this study, we conducted a 3D modeling and anthropometric assessment of the nasal cavity using a 3D analysis software. Furthermore, we aimed to investigate whether the size of the nasal cavity differs according to sex, facial index (FI), and nasal index (NI). We retrospectively reviewed the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data of 100 participants (50 males, 50 females) aged 20–29 years who visited the dental hospital of Dankook University (IRB approval no. DKUDH IRB 2020-01-007). Our findings showed that nasal cavity sizes generally differed according to sex, FI, and NI. These findings provide implications for performing patient-tailored surgeries in clinical practice and conducting further research on the nasal cavity. Therefore, we believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature.

Comparative Analysis of Korean Nasal Morphology Using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Nasal morphology is a significant aspect of facial anatomy and is often used for forensic identification and aesthetic surgery. This study aims to compare nasal dimensions based on sex, facial index (FI), and nasal index (NI) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and 3D modeling. Methods: To observe differences in nasal dimensions by sex and analyze the relationships between facial shapes (FI) and nasal forms (NI), a total of 100 participants (50 males, 50 females) in their 20s were selected from Dankook University Dental Hospital. CBCT scans were performed, and 3D models were created using Mimics software (version 22.0). The measurement items included the alaria distance between (AL), the distance between N (nasion) and SN (subnasale), the distance between N (nasion) and PRN (pronasale), and the distance between SN (subnasale) and PRN (pronasale). A T-test was used for the sex-based analysis of the nasal dimensions, and the facial index- and nasal index-based nasal dimensions were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with Scherffe's post hoc test. Additionally, all the statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software (version 23.0). Results: The results indicated that males generally have larger nasal dimensions than females. Additionally, the mesoprosopic facial type (round face) showed the largest nasal dimensions in the FI classification, while the platyrrhine nasal type (broad and short nose) exhibited the largest dimensions in the NI classification. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the nasal size varies significantly with sex, facial shape, and nasal form. The findings can contribute to forensic identification and provide valuable data for clinical practices in facial reconstruction and nasal surgery.

[Gastrointerstinal stromal tumors of the stomach--case reports].

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchimal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Despite the enormous progress made in the field of diagnostics, most often diagnosis is made during the explorative laparotomy and postoperative immunohystochemical analysis of specimen. The surgical treatment is often indicated, although scarce preoperative diagnosis causes intraoperative dilemma concerning the level of radicality. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this paper we have analyzed two patients with gastric GIST. The first patient was 59 years old male, with preoperatively diagnosed colonic cancer. Intraoperatively besides the transverse colon cancer, we found intramural gastric tumor. This patient underwent subtotal gastrectomy and subtotal colectomy. The immunohystochemical analysis of gastric tumor proves benign GIST. The second patient was 50 year old male presented with repeated upper GI bleeding. The endoscopic ultrasound showed intramural tumor of the anterior gastric wall, with a visible blood vessel bleeding during endoscopy. After the resuscitation, we performed subtotal gastrectomy. The immunohystochemical analysis proved malignant GIST. DISCUSSION In the cases with inadequate preoperative diagnoses, the level of resection procedure is based on the size of tumor and the presence of necrosis and bleeding inside the tumor. Tumors larger than 5 cm in diameter with signs of necrosis and bleeding are parameters of malignant nature of GIST, therefore demanding a radical surgical treatment. CONCLUSION The surgical resection is a treatment of choice for gastrointestinal stromal tumors. It has been shown that adequate surgical resection correlates with high 5-years survival rates for patients with gastric GIST.

Abstract:REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Little information exists on the immunological effects of transport or the use of supplements to minimise transport stress. OBJECTIVES To establish baseline ranges and evaluate immunophenotypic and functional changes associated with transport and a nutritional 'adaptogen' supplement. METHODS Horses received either supplement (n = 10) or placebos (n = 9) during the 30 day study. After 28 days in stalls, 12 horses (6 supplement; 6 placebo) were transported for 24 h, then unloaded and recovered. Venous blood samples were collected on Days 1, 14 and 28 to establish baselines, and on Days 28, 29 and 30 to examine changes during transport and recovery. RESULTS Transport prompted elevations (P<0.05) in cortisol concentration, neutrophil count and white blood cell counts, while lymphocyte subpopulation counts (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD21+) decreased (P<0.05). Normal phenotypic lymphocyte profiles returned within 24 h of recovery. Supplement effects on immunophenotype (CD21+ and CD8+) were observed in stabled horses (P<0.05), but not in transported horses. CONCLUSIONS These results provide insights into the immunological mechanisms associated with long-term transport. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE The existence of a small window of immunological uncertainty follows long-term transportation, enhancing the potential risk of infectious disease in susceptible individuals.

Abstract:Thirty-nine yeast strains were recovered from a field nest of a primitive and putative novel attine ant species in the genus Myrmicocrypta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: tribe Attini). Yeasts isolated from the fungus garden and waste deposit included Candida dubliniensis, Candida oleophila, Cryptococcus haglerorum and Hanseniaspora uvarum. In addition, one morphological type was isolated overwhelmingly. Sequencing data of partial large-subunit (LSU) rDNA and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region coupled with morphological and physiological characterization accommodated this morphotype in a separate taxonomic position in relation to the known species of Trichosporon (Basidiomycota: Trichosporonales). Harmonizing soft tissue subnasale and chin position in a forehead-based framework: interracial commonalities and differences between Asian and Caucasian females

Abstract:Objectives: To establish a reference system for assessing the anteroposterior (A-P) position of the subnasal and lower-facial soft tissues for whole facial harmony. Materials and methods: Forty Asian and 40 Caucasian females with attractive profiles were selected as the "attractive" samples, with "ordinary" samples for comparison. Each profile was analyzed, and comparisons were made to reveal the interracial commonalities and differences. Esthetically essential parameters were established. An averaged attractive profile for each race was created by digital morphing and then modified into 30 variations based on combined variations of the esthetically essential parameters. Assessments were performed to investigate the esthetic ranges. Results: A-P position of the subnasal and lower-facial landmarks harmonized with the forehead for female profile esthetics. In addition to balanced soft tissue subnasale (sSn)- and soft titssue pogonion (Pos)-to-forehead A-P relations, harmonizing lower-facial soft tissues to sSn was indispensable for profile attractiveness. sSn-to-glabella, Pos-to-glabella, and Pos-to-sSn A-P relations were esthetically essential. Perceived by orthodontists, the attractive Asian female profiles had sSn-to-glabella A-P relations ranging from 0.5 mm to 4.5 mm, Pos-to-sSn from -9.0 mm to -5.5 mm, and Pos-to-glabella from -8.5 mm to -1.0 mm. Compared with Asians, the attractive Caucasian female profiles had more anteriorly and widely distributed sSn relative to the forehead, wider ranges of Pos-to-sSn A-P relations, and more prominent chins. Conclusions: A reference system comprising sSn-glabella, Pos-sSn, and Pos-glabella horizontal distances was constructed for facial profile analysis. This system could aid treatment planning for surgical or orthopedic repositioning of the maxilla and chin.
A 3-dimensional anthropometric evaluation of facial morphology among Chinese and Greek population

Abstract:Introduction: The use of 3-dimensional (3D) facial imaging has taken greater importance as orthodontists use the soft tissue paradigm in the evaluation of skeletal disproportion. Studies have shown that faces defer in populations. To date, no anthropometric evaluations have been made of Chinese and Greek faces. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare facial morphologies of Greeks and Chinese using 3D facial anthropometric landmarks. Materials and methods: Three-dimensional facial images were acquired via a commercially available stereophotogrammetric camera capture system. The 3dMD face system captured 245 subjects from 2 population groups (Chinese [n = 72] and Greek [n = 173]), and each population was categorized into male and female groups for evaluation. All subjects in the group were between 18 and 30 years old and had no apparent facial anomalies. Twenty-five anthropometric landmarks were identified on the 3D faces of each subject. Soft tissue nasion was set as the "zeroed" reference landmark. Twenty landmark distances were constructed and evaluated within 3 dimensions of space. Six angles, 4 proportions, and 1 construct were also calculated. Student t test was used to analyze each data set obtained within each subgroup. Results: Distinct facial differences were noted between the subgroups evaluated. When comparing differences of sexes in 2 populations (eg, male Greeks and male Chinese), significant differences were noted in more than 80% of the landmark distances calculated. One hundred percent of the angular were significant, and the Chinese were broader in width to height facial proportions. In evaluating the lips to the esthetic line, the Chinese population had more protrusive lips. Conclusions: There are differences in the facial morphologies of subjects obtained from a Chinese population versus that of a Greek population.

Abstract:Objective:The purpose of the research is to measure and collect the data of the external nasal shape of Han adults in Zhejiang province,and to provide morphological reference for nasal deformity repair and cosmetic surgery.Methods:Collect CBCT data of 290 adults (138 male,152female),and measure the external nasal shape after three-dimensional reconstruction.Results:Alar base width (P=0.8766) and nasal frontal angle (P=0.6124) demonstrate no statistical significance between male and female.The male data in liner distance was greater than the female significantly,while opposite in nasal frontal angle (P＜0.05).Conclusions:Han adult nose morphological of Zhejiang province were significantly different in gender.This study provides reference data for the nasal deformity reconstruction,and also provides basic data for the further regional,between the different races of nasal morphology study.
Individual variation in plasma cholesterol response to dietary saturated fat

Abstract:Abstract Objective: To determine the extent to which plasma lipid concentrations of individuals are consistently sensitive to changes in saturated fats; to examine whether groups that consistently have large or small responses can be defined; and to identify factors which predict response of lipids to dietary change. Design: A double crossover design in which two diets (S, providing 21% energy from saturated fat, and P, providing 10%) were followed for periods of six weeks in the sequence SPSP or PSPS. Setting: 67 free living subjects, total cholesterol 5.5-7.9 mmol/l. Main outcome measures: Relation of cholesterol responses to repeated dietary changes and of potential predictors and cholesterol response. Results: Similar average changes in cholesterol mask a wide range of individual responses. Response was not related to compliance. In all participants the change in cholesterol observed when the nature of dietary fat was changed on the two crossovers was correlated (r=0.31, P=0.01); the degree of correlation between the two sets of responses was greater in the 46 consistent responders than in the 21 variable responders (r=0.71 v r=0.21). Mean differences in cholesterol between diet S and diet P during the two crossovers were 1.16 (SD 0.35) mmol/l and 0.95 (0.26) mmol/l for consistent hyperresponders and 0.18 (0.26) mmol/l and 0.18 (0.25) mmol/l for consistent minimal responders. In consistent responders, changes in total cholesterol in response to increasing saturated fats correlated with baseline cholesteryl ester transfer activity (r=0.32, P=0.03); total cholesterol (r=0.37, P=0.01); triglycerides (r=0.30, P=0.04); and apolipoprotein B (r=0.54, P=0.01). Conclusions: There is a degree of consistency in cholesterol response to instructions to change dietary fat which is not explained by dietary compliance, and there are groups of consistent hyperresponders and minimal responders within a population of hypercholesterolaemic individuals. Several factors predicting response have been identified. These results have relevance to dietary approaches aimed at reducing the lipoprotein mediated risk of coronary heart disease.
