Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we introduce a logic based on team semantics, called $\mathbf {FOT} $ , whose expressive power is elementary, i.e., coincides with first-order logic both on the level of sentences and (possibly open) formulas, and we also show that a sublogic of $\mathbf {FOT} $ , called $\mathbf {FOT}^{\downarrow } $ , captures exactly downward closed elementary (or first-order) team properties. We axiomatize completely the logic $\mathbf {FOT} $ , and also extend the known partial axiomatization of dependence logic to dependence logic enriched with the logical constants in $\mathbf {FOT}^{\downarrow } $ .

Abstract:infons Before we talk about information flow, we need two more notions: parameters and situation types. Parameters are constructs resembling the well-known operator of l-abstraction in the l-calculus ([Barendregt]). We start by adding some infinite set of parameters for each basic type. Say we add parameters â1, â2, 1⁄4 of the type of individuals, _1, _2,1⁄4 of type of relations, etc. These parameters are like indeterminates that can take as values any individual, relation, etc., as the case may be.

Abstract:Logic programming, as exemplified by datalog, defines the meaning of a program as the canonical smallest model derived from deductive closure over its inference rules. However, many problems call for an enumeration of models that vary along some set of choices while maintaining structural and logical constraints -- there is no single canonical model. The notion of stable models has successfully captured programmer intuition about the set of valid solutions for such problems, giving rise to a family of programming languages and associated solvers collectively known as answer set programming. Unfortunately, the definition of a stable model is frustratingly indirect, especially in the presence of rules containing free variables. We propose a new formalism, called finite-choice logic programing, for which the set of stable models can be characterized as the least fixed point of an immediate consequence operator. Our formalism allows straightforward expression of common idioms in both datalog and answer set programming, gives meaning to a new and useful class of programs, enjoys a constructive and direct operational semantics, and admits a predictive cost semantics, which we demonstrate through our implementation.

Abstract:We study the system IFP of intuitionistic fixed point logic, an extension of intuitionistic first-order logic by strictly positive inductive and coinductive definitions. We define a realizability interpretation of IFP and use it to extract computational content from proofs about abstract structures specified by arbitrary classically true disjunction free formulas. The interpretation is shown to be sound with respect to a domain-theoretic denotational semantics and a corresponding lazy operational semantics of a functional language for extracted programs. We also show how extracted programs can be translated into Haskell. As an application we extract a program converting the signed digit representation of real numbers to infinite Gray-code from a proof of inclusion of the corresponding coinductive predicates.

Abstract:Performing an inference involves irreducibly dynamic cognitive procedures. The article proposes that a non-associative information frame, corresponding to a residuated pogroupoid, underpins the information structure involved. The argument proceeds by expounding the informational turn in logic, before outlining the cognitive actions at work in deductive inference. The structural rules of Weakening, Contraction, Commutation, and Association are rejected on the grounds that they cause us to lose track of the information flow in inferential procedures. By taking the operation of information application as the primary operation, the fusion connective is retained, with commutative failure generating a double implication. The other connectives are rejected.

Abstract:An inductive logic can be formulated in which the elements are not propositions or probability distributions, but information systems. The logic is complete for information systems with binary hypotheses, i.e., it applies to all such systems. It is not complete for information systems with more than two hypotheses, but applies to a subset of such systems. The logic is inductive in that conclusions are more informative than premises. Inferences using the formalism have a strong justification in terms of the expected value of the derived information system.

Abstract:Issues about information spring up wherever one scratches the surface of logic. Here is a case that raises delicate issues of ‘factual’ versus ‘procedural’ information, or ‘statics’ versus ‘dynamics’. What does intuitionistic logic, perhaps the earliest source of informational and procedural thinking in contemporary logic, really tell us about information? How does its view relate to its ‘cousin’ epistemic logic? We discuss connections between intuitionistic models and recent protocol models for dynamic-epistemic logic, as well as more general issues that emerge.

Abstract:There are standard logics DTC, TC, and LFP capturing the complexity classes L, NL, and P on ordered structures, respectively. In [4] we have shown that LFP_{inv}, the ``order-invariant least fixed-point logic LFP,'' captures P (on all finite structures) if and only if there is a listing of the P subsets of the set TAUT of propositional tautologies. We are able to extend the result to listings of the L-subsets (NL-subsets) of TAUT and the logic DTC_{inv} (TC_{inv}). As a byproduct we get that LFP_{inv} captures P if DTC_{inv} captures L. Furthermore, we show that the existence of a listing of the L-subsets of TAUT is equivalent to the existence of an almost space optimal algorithm for TAUT. To obtain this result we have to derive a space version of a theorem of Levin on optimal inverters.

Abstract:We report on a recent conjecture by Gisin on a restriction of physical processes in sets of finite information numbers (FIN) and further analyze the entropic constraint associated with the proposed algorithm. In the course, we provide a decomposition of binary entropies in a pair of fractal sequences as functional composites of binary digit-sum functions and we construct a unique formula and an abstract partition function for these. We also prove, based on a previously introduced tool of the inductive combinatorial hierarchies that the naturally inherited self-similarity of the resulting hierarchy of entropic sets contains equivalence classes providing unlimited symbolic series for satisfying the demand posed by the FIN conjecture.

Abstract:The logic of information flows (LIF) has recently been proposed as a general framework in the field of knowledge representation. In this framework, tasks of procedural nature can still be modeled in a declarative, logic-based fashion. In this paper, we focus on the task of query processing under limited access patterns, a well-studied problem in the database literature. We show that LIF is well-suited for modeling this task. Toward this goal, we introduce a variant of LIF called "forward" LIF (FLIF), in a first-order setting. FLIF takes a novel graph-navigational approach; it is an XPath-like language that nevertheless turns out to be equivalent to the "executable" fragment of first-order logic defined by Nash and Lud\"ascher. One can also classify the variables in FLIF expressions as inputs and outputs. Expressions where inputs and outputs are disjoint, referred to as io-disjoint FLIF expressions, allow a particularly transparent translation into algebraic query plans that respect the access limitations. Finally, we show that general FLIF expressions can always be put into io-disjoint form.

Abstract:Indexed Linear Logic has been introduced by Ehrhard and Bucciarelli, it can be seen as a logical presentation of non-idempotent intersection types extended through the relational semantics to the full linear logic. We introduce an idempotent variant of Indexed Linear Logic. We give a fine-grained reformulation of the syntax by exposing implicit parameters and by unifying several operations on formulae via the notion of base change. Idempotency is achieved by means of an appropriate subtyping relation. We carry on an in-depth study of indLL as a logic, showing how it determines a refinement of classical linear logic and establishing a terminating cut-elimination procedure. Cut-elimination is proved to be confluent up to an appropriate congruence induced by the subtyping relation.

Abstract:This paper presents rules of inference for a binary quantifier $I$ for the formalisation of sentences containing definite descriptions within intuitionist positive free logic. $I$ binds one variable and forms a formula from two formulas. $Ix[F, G]$ means `The $F$ is $G$'. The system is shown to have desirable proof-theoretic properties: it is proved that deductions in it can be brought into normal form. The discussion is rounded up by comparisons between the approach to the formalisation of definite descriptions recommended here and the more usual approach that uses a term-forming operator $\iota$, where $\iota xF$ means `the F'.

Abstract:Information Integration is a young and exciting field with enormous research and commercial significance in the new world of the Information Society. It stands at the crossroad of Databases and Artificial Intelligence requiring novel techniques that bring together different methods from these fields. Information from disparate heterogeneous sources often with no a-priori common schema needs to be synthesized in a flexible, transparent and intelligent way in order to respond to the demands of a query thus enabling a more informed decision by the user or application program. The field although relatively young has already found many practical applications particularly for integrating information over the World Wide Web. This paper gives a brief introduction of the field highlighting some of the main current and future research issues and application areas. It attempts to evaluate the current and potential role of Computational Logic in this and suggests some of the problems where logic-based techniques could be used.

Abstract:Hintikka and Sandu originally proposed Independence Friendly Logic (IF) as a first-order logic of imperfect information to describe game-theoretic phenomena underlying the semantics of natural language. The logic allows for expressing independence constraints among quantified variables, in a similar vein to Henkin quantifiers, and has a nice game-theoretic semantics in terms of imperfect information games. However, the IF semantics exhibits some limitations. It treats the players asymmetrically, considering only one of the two players as having imperfect information when evaluating truth, resp., falsity, of a sentence. In addition, the truth and falsity of sentences coincide with the existence of a uniform winning strategy for one of the two players in the semantic imperfect information game. As a consequence, IF does admit undetermined sentences, which are neither true nor false, thus failing the law of excluded middle. In this paper, we investigate an extension of IF, called Alternating Dependence/Independence Friendly Logic (ADIF), tailored to overcome these limitations. To this end, we introduce a novel compositional semantics, generalising the one based on trumps proposed by Hodges for IF. The new semantics (i) allows for meaningfully restricting both players at the same time, (ii) enjoys the property of game-theoretic determinacy, (iii) recovers the law of excluded middle for sentences, and (iv) grants ADIF the full descriptive power of Second Order Logic. We also provide an equivalent Herbrand-Skolem semantics and a game-theoretic semantics for the prenex fragment of ADIF, the latter being defined in terms of a determined infinite-duration game that precisely captures the other two semantics on finite structures.

Abstract:We study propositional and first-order Gödel logics over infinitary languages which are motivated semantically by corresponding interpretations into the unit interval [0,1]. We provide infinitary Hilbert-style calculi for the particular (propositional and first-order) cases with con-/disjunctions of countable length and prove corresponding completeness theorems by extending the usual Lindenbaum-Tarski construction to the infinitary case for a respective algebraic semantics via complete linear Heyting algebras. We provide infinitary hypersequent calculi and prove corresponding cut-elimination theorems in the Schütte-Tait-style. Initial observations are made regarding truth-value sets other than [0,1].

Abstract:This introduction begins with a section on fundamental notions of mathematical logic, including propositional logic, predicate or first-order logic, completeness, compactness, the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem, Craig interpolation, Beth's definability theorem and Herbrand's theorem. It continues with a section on Gödel's incompleteness theorems, which includes a discussion of first-order arithmetic and primitive recursive functions. This is followed by three sections that are devoted, respectively, to proof theory (provably total recursive functions and Goodstein sequences for $\mathsf{I\Sigma}_1$), computability (fundamental notions and an analysis of Kőnig's lemma in terms of the low basis theorem) and model theory (ultraproducts, chains and the Ax-Grothendieck theorem). We conclude with some brief introductory remarks about set theory (with more details reserved for a separate lecture). The author uses these notes for a first logic course for undergraduates in mathematics, which consists of 28 lectures and 14 exercise sessions of 90 minutes each. In such a course, it may be necessary to omit some material, which is straightforward since all sections except for the first two are independent of each other.

Abstract:The vast quantity of data generated and captured every day has led to a pressing need for tools and processes to organize, analyze and interrelate this data. Automated reasoning and optimization tools with inherent support for data could enable advancements in a variety of contexts, from data-backed decision making to data-intensive scientific research. To this end, we introduce a decidable logic aimed at database analysis. Our logic extends quantifier-free Linear Integer Arithmetic with operators from Relational Algebra, like selection and cross product. We provide a scalable decision procedure that is based on the BC $(T)$ architecture for ILP Modulo Theories. Our decision procedure makes use of database techniques. We also experimentally evaluate our approach, and discuss potential applications.
