Abstract:Optical trapping and binding systems are non-Hermitian. On one hand, the optical force is non-Hermitian and may pump energy into the trapped particle when the non-Hermiticity is sufficiently large. On the other hand, the ambient damping constitutes a loss to the particle. Here, we show that in a low-friction environment, the interplay between the energy pumped-in by light and the ambient dissipation can give rise to either instability or a periodic vibration characterized by a finite quality factor (Q-factor). Through a comprehensive exploration, we analyze the influence of various parameters on the non-Hermitian force field. Our investigation reveals several strategies for enhancing the non-Hermitian force field, such as augmenting particle radius and refractive index, utilizing triangular lattice optical clusters, and reducing lattice constants.

Abstract:Intense light traps and binds small particles, offering unique control to the microscopic world. With incoming illumination and radiative losses, optical forces are inherently nonconservative, thus non-Hermitian. Contrary to conventional systems, the operator governing time evolution is real and asymmetric (i.e., non-Hermitian), which inevitably yield complex eigenvalues when driven beyond the exceptional points, where light pumps in energy that eventually “melts” the light-bound structures. Surprisingly, unstable complex eigenvalues are prevalent for clusters with ~10 or more particles, and in the many-particle limit, their presence is inevitable. As such, optical forces alone fail to bind a large cluster. Our conclusion does not contradict with the observation of large optically-bound cluster in a fluid, where the ambient damping can take away the excess energy and restore the stability. The non-Hermitian theory overturns the understanding of optical trapping and binding, and unveils the critical role played by non-Hermiticity and exceptional points, paving the way for large-scale manipulation.

Abstract:The equipartition theorem is an elegant cornerstone theory of thermal and statistical physics. However, it fails to address some contemporary problems, such as those associated with optical and acoustic trapping, due to the non-Hermitian nature of the external wave-induced force. We use stochastic calculus to solve the Langevin equation and thereby analytically generalize the equipartition theorem to a theory that we denote the non-Hermitian non-equipartition theory. We use the non-Hermitian non-equipartition theory to calculate the relevant statistics, which reveal that the averaged kinetic and potential energies are no longer equal to k B T /2 and are not equipartitioned. As examples, we apply non-Hermitian non-equipartition theory to derive the connection between the non-Hermitian trapping force and particle statistics, whereby measurement of the latter can determine the former. Furthermore, we apply a non-Hermitian force to convert a saddle potential into a stable potential, leading to a different type of stable state.

Abstract:Over the past decade, classical optical systems with gain or loss, modeled by non-Hermitian parity-time symmetric Hamiltonians, have been deeply investigated. Yet, their applicability to the quantum domain with number-resolved photonic states is fundamentally voided by quantum-limited amplifier noise. Here, we show that second-quantized Hermitian Hamiltonians on the Fock space give rise to non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonians that generate the dynamics of corresponding creation and annihilation operators. Using this equivalence between PT-symmetry and symplectic Bogoliubov transformations, we create a quantum optical scheme comprising squeezing, phase-shifters, and beam-splitters for simulating arbitrary non-unitary processes by way of singular value decomposition. In contrast to the post-selection scheme for non-Hermitian quantum simulation, the success probability in this approach is independent of the system size or simulation time and can be efficiently Trotterised similar to a unitary transformation.

Manipulating spectral transitions and photonic transmission in a non-Hermitian optical system through nanoparticle perturbations

Abstract:In recent years, extensive research has been dedicated to the study of parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, which involves the engineered balance of gain and loss in non-Hermitian optics. Complementary to $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, the concept of anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry has emerged as a natural framework for describing the dynamics of open systems with dissipations. In this letter, we study spectral transitions and photon transmission in a linear spinning resonator perturbed by nanoparticles. First, we demonstrate that by precisely manipulating the nanoparticle perturbations, the eigenvalues(or spectra) of a non-Hermitian system satisfying anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can transit to that of a quasi-closed Hermitian system. Second, we outline the essential conditions for constructing a quasi-closed system and analyze its dynamic behavior with respect to photon transmission. By adjusting the rotational angular velocity of the spinning resonator and the strength of the nanoparticle perturbations, the quasi-closed system enables a variety of photon distribution behaviors, which may have significant applications in quantum devices. Our findings offer valuable insights for the design of dissipative quantum devices under realistic conditions and for understanding their responses to external perturbations.

Abstract:Attribute to their robustness against loss and external noise, nonreciprocal photonic devices hold great promise for applications in quantum information processing. Recent advancements have demonstrated that nonreciprocal optical transmission in linear systems can be achieved through the strategic introduction of loss. However, a crucial question remains unanswered: can loss be harnessed as a resource for generating nonreciprocal quantum correlations? Here, we take a counterintuitive stance by engineering loss to generate a novel form of nonreciprocal quantum correlations, termed nonreciprocal photon blockade. We examine a dissipative three-cavity system comprising two nonlinear cavities and a linear cavity. The interplay of loss and nonlinearity leads to a robust nonreciprocal single- and two-photon blockade, facilitated by destructive quantum interference. Furthermore, we demonstrate the tunability of this nonreciprocal photon blockade by manipulating the relative phase between the two nonlinear cavities. Remarkably, this allows for the reversal of the direction of nonreciprocity. Our study not only sheds new light on the concept of loss-engineered quantum nonreciprocity but also opens up a unique pathway for the design of quantum nonreciprocal photonic devices.

Recovering dark states by non-Hermiticity

Abstract:Dark states, which are incapable of absorbing and emitting light, have been widely applied in multiple disciplines of physics. However, the existence of dark states relies on certain strict constraints on the system. For instance, in the fundamental {\Lambda} system, a perturbation breaking the degeneracy between two energy levels may destroy the destructive interference and demolish the dark state. Here, we show that non-Hermiticity can be exploited as a constructive means to restore a dark state. By compensating for the undesired perturbations, non-Hermiticity produces unidirectional couplings such that the dark state remains decoupled from the rest of the system. Implementing this scheme in many-body systems, flat bands and edge states can be recovered by losses and gains. Further taking into account interactions, a range of novel quantum phases could arise in such non-Hermitian systems.

Abstract:Nonreciprocity is important in both optical information processing and topological photonics studies. Conventional principles for realizing nonreciprocity rely on magnetic fields, spatiotemporal modulation, or nonlinearity. Here we propose a generic principle for generating nonreciprocity by taking advantage of energy loss, which is usually regarded as harmful. The loss in a resonance mode induces a phase lag, which is independent of the energy transmission direction. When multichannel lossy resonance modes are combined, the resulting interference gives rise to nonreciprocity, with different coupling strengths for the forward and backward directions, and unidirectional energy transmission. This study opens a new avenue for the design of nonreciprocal devices without stringent requirements.
Quantum theory of non-hermitian optical binding between nanoparticles

Abstract:Recent experiments demonstrate highly tunable non-reciprocal coupling between levitated nanoparticles due to optical binding [Rieser et al., Science 377, 987 (2022)]. In view of recent experiments cooling nanoparticles to the quantum regime, we here develop the quantum theory of small dielectric objects interacting via the forces and torques induced by scattered tweezer photons. The interaction is fundamentally non-hermitian and accompanied by correlated quantum noise. We present the corresponding Markovian quantum master equation, show how to reach non-reciprocal and unidirectional coupling, and identify unique quantum signatures of optical binding. Our work provides the theoretical tools for exploring and exploiting the rich quantum physics of non-reciprocally coupled nanoparticle arrays.

Abstract:Aside from optical pushing and trapping that have been implemented successfully, the transportation of objects backward to the source by the optical pulling forces (OPFs) has attracted tremendous attention, which was usually achieved by increasing the forward momentum of light. However, the limited momentum transfer between light and object greatly constrains the amplitudes of OPFs. Here, we present a mechanism to generate strong interactions between object and background through the bound states in the continuums, which can generate large OPFs without increasing the forward momentum of light. The underlying physics is the extraction of momentum from the designed background lattice units assisted by mode symmetry. Abstract:The eigenoscillations in a two-dimensional dimer made of gain and lossy nanoparticles were investigated within exact analytical approach. It was shown that there are eigenoscillations for which all Joule losses are exactly compensated by the gain. Among such solutions, there are solutions with a new type of symmetry, which we refer to as Loss Compensation Symmetry (LCS) as well as well-known PT (parity-time) symmetric solutions. The modes with LCS unlike PT symmetric ones allow one to achieve full loss compensation with significantly less gain that in the case of PT symmetry. This effect paves way to the new loss compensation methods in optics.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time symmetry have been found to exhibit real spectra of eigenvalues, indicating a balance between the loss and gain. However, such a balance is not only dependent on the magnitude of loss and gain, but also easily broken due to external disturbance. Here, the authors propose a transformation-optics approach to construct a unique class of non-Hermitian systems with robustly balanced loss and gain, irrespective of the magnitude of loss/gain and the environmental disturbance. Through transformation-optics operators like space folding and stretching, loss and gain can be generated and separated in the real space. While in the virtual space, the loss and gain are still combined to each other, rendering a balance of energy that is far more robust than other non-Hermitian systems. This amazing feature is verified by finite-element simulations. This work reveals a class of non-Hermitian systems in which loss and gain are balanced robustly, thereby denoted as pseudo-Hermitian systems.

Enhanced Robustness via Loss Engineering in Detuned Non-Hermitian Scattering Systems

Abstract:Non-Hermitian optics has revealed a series of counterintuitive phenomena with profound implications for sensing, lasing, and light manipulation. While the non-Hermiticity of Hamitonians is well-recognized, recent advancements in non-Hermitian physics have broadened to include scattering matrices, uncovering phenomena such as simultaneous lasing and coherent perfect absorption (CPA), reflectionless scattering modes (RSMs), and coherent chaos control. Despite these developments, the investigation has predominantly focused on static and symmetric configurations, leaving the dynamic properties of non-Hermitian scattering in detuned systems largely unexplored. Bridging this gap, we extend certain stationary non-Hermitian scattering phenomena to detuned systems. We delve into the interplay between bi-directional RSMs and RSM exceptional points (EPs), and elucidate the global existence conditions for RSMs under detuning. Moreover, we introduces a novel category of EPs, characterized by the coalescence of transmission peaks, emerging independent with the presence of Hamiltonian EPs. The transmission EPs (TEPs) exhibit flat-top lineshape and can be extended to a square-shaped spectrum when detuning is involved, accompanied by a distinctive phase transition. Significantly, we demonstrate the applications of the TEPs in a one-dimensional coupled cavity system, engineered to enhance sensing robustness against environmental instabilities such as laser frequency drifts, which can exceed 10 MHz. This capability represents a substantial improvement over traditional sensing methods and an important improvement of fragile EP sensors. Our findings not only contribute to the broader understanding of non-Hermitian scattering phenomena but also paves the way for future advancements in non-Hermitian sensing technologies.

Abstract:The interference of photons in a lossy beam splitter (BS) exhibits anticoalescence, which is surprising for bosons. Such a non-Hermitian system involving open quantum dynamics is of particular interest for quantum information processing and metrology. The Hermiticity of photonic devices is generally fixed according to the material, but is controllable at the interface of photons and atomic systems. Here, we demonstrate a tunable non-Hermitian BS for the interference between traveling photonic and localized magnonic modes. The crossover from a Hermitian to a non-Hermitian magnon-photon BS is achieved by controlling the coherent and incoherent interaction mediated by the excited levels of atoms, which is reconfigurable via the detuning of a control laser. A correlated interference pattern between the photons and magnons is demonstrated by such a non-Hermitian BS. Our system has the potential to operate with photons and magnons at the single-quanta level, and it provides a versatile quantum interface for studying the non-Hermitian quantum physics and parity-time symmetry.

Abstract:The non-Hermitian skin effect and non-Hermitian edge burst reflect the vital role of the spatial boundary in non-Hermitian systems from both static and dynamic perspectives. Here, we study a non-Hermitian dissipative lattice with nonlocal coupling and demonstrate many interesting static and dynamic phenomena. In the case of a global coupling with all sites coupled with each other, we observe an anomalous hopping resonance, at which a quantum walker initially placed at one single site almost completely escape from the boundary of the system regardless of its initial position. In the case of the non-global, but still infinite-range coupling, the interplay between nonlocal hopping and non-Hermitian skin effect leads to the emergence of local bulk modes presenting multi-partite density distribution. The presence of local bulk modes induce nontrivial dynamics of a quantum walker, featuring multiple peaks of lost probability in spatially separated domains. Our findings demonstrate unique properties induced by nonlocal coupling in non-Hermitian systems.

Hybrid Paul-optical trap with large optical access for levitated optomechanics

Abstract:We present a hybrid trapping platform that allows us to levitate a charged nanoparticle in high vacuum using either optical fields, radio-frequency fields, or a combination thereof. Our hybrid approach combines an optical dipole trap with a linear Paul trap while maintaining a large numerical aperture (0.77 NA). We detail a controlled transfer procedure that allows us to use the Paul trap as a safety net to recover particles lost from the optical trap at high vacuum. The presented hybrid platform adds to the toolbox of levitodynamics and represents an important step towards fully controllable dark potentials, providing control in the absence of decoherence due to photon recoil.

Light Trapping by Non-Hermitian Thin Films

Abstract:One of the exceptional features of non-Hermitian systems is the unidirectional wave interactions. Simultaneous modulation of the real and the imaginary part of the interaction potentials (of the refractive index and the gain/loss in the case of optical systems) can result in unequal coupling coefficients between the fields of different parts of the system. The unidirectional coupling can also be arranged not only between the internal fields of the system but also between internal fields and external radiation. At a particular (exceptional) point the situation can be achieved, that the external radiation is efficiently coupled into the system, but the internal radiation cannot escape backwards. In this way, the incident radiation can be trapped inside the non-Hermitian system and, eventually, can be efficiently absorbed there. We realize this idea in non-Hermitically modulated thin films. The modulation consists of a Hermitian part - the periodic corrugation of the surfaces of a thin film, and a non-Hermitian part - the modulation of losses along the film. We prove numerically and demonstrate experimentally that the incident radiation, coupled with such a non-Hermitian thin film, is unidirectionally trapped into a planar mode of the film, does not escape from the film (or escape weakly due to experimental imperfections), and is efficiently absorbed there.

Non-Hermitian gauged reciprocity and symmetry

Abstract:The Lorentz reciprocity is a fundamental property in electromagnetism and well known to break down due to an external magnetic field. With a fictitious or imaginary vector potential, however, its behavior is largely unknown. Here we show that in systems with an imaginary vector potential and displaying the non-Hermitian skin effect, the Lorentz reciprocity is broken but still governed by a rigorous mathematical relation, which we term non-Hermitian gauged reciprocity. When mimicking an imaginary vector potential using just linear integrated photonic elements, however, the conditions that lead to the Lorentz reciprocity are still satisfied and hence the latter cannot be broken. Nevertheless, we show that the non-Hermitian gauged reciprocity can still be observed with a proper choice of inputs and outputs, alongside the Lorentz reciprocity. In addition, we also reveal another equal-amplitude response in the same system, which we attribute to a non-Hermitian gauged symmetry. Furthermore, we show that light propagation is not impinged by the non-Hermitian topological funnel effect, highlighting an underappreciated difference between coherently driven and non-driven systems. These findings are confirmed using a tight-binding model and full-wave simulations of coupled optical micro-ring resonators, providing a valuable extension of the Lorentz reciprocity in the non-Hermitian domain.

Abstract:The effect of a non-unitary transformation on an initial Hermitian operator is studied. The initial (Hermitian) optical system is a Glauber-Fock optical lattice. The resulting non-Hermitian Hamiltonian models an anisotropic (Glauber-Fock) waveguide array of the Hatano-Nelson-type. Several cases are analyzed and exact analytical solutions for both the Hermitian and non-Hermitian Schrödinger problems are given, as they are simply connected. Indeed, such transformation can be regarded as a non-unitary Supersymmetric (SUSY) transformation and the resulting non-Hermitian Hamiltonian can be considered as representing an open system that interchanges energy with the environment.
