Abstract:This chapter discusses an emerging photovoltaic material, organometal halide perovskite, which delivers a power conversion efficiency of over 20%. We start with a brief introduction of this novel material and its applications in photovoltaic technology. We present a detailed explanation of the optoelectronic properties of organometalhalide perovskites and different device architectures. We focus on the deposition methods as well as quality control of the perovskite films. Finally, we give a perspective concerning the challenges and opportunities for this promising material.

Abstract:The tsunami of research on halide perovskites over the last decade is sparked by the unexpected revelation of their singular properties, creating a new field of perovskite optoelectronics with great achievements. Soon recognized is the importance of perovskite–perovskite (pe–pe) interfaced structures with coherent interfaces on account of the ease with which to tailor perovskite semiconducting properties, and the prospect to inject new functions and boost device performance. There have been prominent developments in the pe–pe interfaced structures concerning their innovative construction strategies, distinctive properties, and interesting optoelectronic applications. This article provides an overview of recent advances on the pe–pe interfaced structures with a view to informing their rational design and guiding the improvement of the derivate devices. It begins with introduction of the structures, energy levels, band alignments, and ion migration pertaining to the pe–pe interfaced structures. Next, five synthetic approaches are systematically presented. Then, theories, simulations, and characterizations of the interfaced structures are discussed. This is followed by highlighting the distinctive applications of the pe–pe interfaced structures in solar cells, detectors, and light‐emitting diodes. Finally, the review is concluded by comprehensively summing up the key points covered and pointing out promising research directions along the line for future endeavors.

Abstract:Halide perovskite materials have attracted worldwide attention in the photovoltaic area due to the rapid improvement in efficiency, from less than 4% in 2009 to 26.1% in 2023 with only a nanometer lever photo-active layer. Meanwhile, this nova star found applications in many other areas, such as light emitting, sensor, etc. This review started with the fundamentals of physics and chemistry behind the excellent performance of halide perovskite materials for photovoltaic/light emitting and the methods for preparing them. Then, it described the basic principles for solar cells and light emitting devices. It summarized the strategies including nanotechnology to improve the performance and the application of halide perovskite materials in these two areas: from structure–property relation to how each component in the devices affects the overall performance. Moreover, this review listed the challenges for the future applications of halide perovskite materials.

Abstract:Abstract Here we provide a comprehensive review of a newly developed lighting technology based on metal halide perovskites (i.e. perovskite light-emitting diodes) encompassing the research endeavours into materials, photophysics and device engineering. At the outset we survey the basic perovskite structures and their various dimensions (namely three-, two- and zero-dimensional perovskites), and demonstrate how the compositional engineering of these structures affects the perovskite light-emitting properties. Next, we turn to the physics underpinning photo- and electroluminescence in these materials through their connection to the fundamental excited states, energy/charge transport processes and radiative and non-radiative decay mechanisms. In the remainder of the review, we focus on the engineering of perovskite light-emitting diodes, including the history of their development as well as an extensive analysis of contemporary strategies for boosting device performance. Key concepts include balancing the electron/hole injection, suppression of parasitic carrier losses, improvement of the photoluminescence quantum yield and enhancement of the light extraction. Overall, this review reflects the current paradigm for perovskite lighting, and is intended to serve as a foundation to materials and device scientists newly working in this field.

Abstract:The halide perovskite material has attracted vast attention as a versatile semiconductor in the past decade. With the unique advantages in physical and chemical properties, they have also shown great potential in photocatalytic applications. This review aims at the specific design principles triggered by the unique properties when employing halide-perovskite-based photocatalytic systems from the following perspectives: (I) Design of photoelectrocatalytic device structures including the n-i-p/p-i-n structure, photoelectrode device encapsulation, and electrolyte engineering. (II) The design of heterogeneous photocatalytic systems toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and CO 2 reduction reaction, including the light management, surface/interface engineering, stability improvement, product selectivity engineering, and reaction system engineering. (III) The photocatalysts for the environmental application and organic synthesis. Based on the analyses, the review also suggests the prospective research for the future development of halide-perovskite-based photocatalytic systems.

Abstract:Benefiting from the superior photophysical properties and the low-cost crystalline substances, perovskites have emerged as a competitive photoactive semiconductor for optoelectronic devices such as solar cells (SCs), light-emitting diodes (LEDs), photodetectors (PDs), and lasers. These perovskite optoelectronics can realize the reciprocal conversion of light and electricity. The conversion efficiency, besides relying on the crystalline quality of perovskite materials, highly depends on the management of the incident and emitted photons throughout the utilization, extraction, emission, and modulation of light. Light management is even more crucial for perovskites given their direct band gap and high refractive index. Photonic structures with periodic features afford promising and efficient means to manage light through the interaction between media and photons. In this review, typical strategies of photon management via photonic structures are first discussed from the perspective of photo-physics, such as antireflection modes, scattering enhancement, resonance modes, and photonic crystals. Then the design and implementation progress of these photonic elements for high-index perovskite optoelectronics are systemically summarized. Finally, the proposals and guidelines for high-performance multifunctional perovskite optoelectronics are provided to expedite their practical applications.

Abstract:Optoelectronic devices are key building blocks for sustainable energy, imaging applications, and optical communications in modern society. Two-dimensional materials and perovskites have been considered promising candidates in this research area due to their fascinating material properties. Despite the significant progress achieved in the past decades, challenges still remain to further improve the performance of devices based on 2D materials or perovskites and to solve stability issues for their reliability. Recently, a novel concept of 2D material/perovskite heterostructure has demonstrated remarkable achievements by taking advantage of both materials. The diverse fabrication techniques and large families of 2D materials and perovskites open up great opportunities for structure modification, interface engineering, and composition tuning in state-of-the-art optoelectronics. In this review, we present comprehensive information on the synthesis methods, material properties of 2D materials and perovskites, and the research progress of optoelectronic devices, particularly solar cells and photodetectors which are based on 2D materials, perovskites, and 2D material/perovskite heterostructures with future perspectives.

Abstract:The past two decades have seen a drastic progress in the development of semiconducting metal-halide perovskites (MHPs) from both the fundamentally scientific and technological points of view. The excellent optoelectronic properties and device performance make perovskites very attractive to the researchers in materials, physics, chemistry and so on. To fully explore the potential of perovskites in the applications, various techniques have been demonstrated to synthesize perovskites, modify their structures, and create patterns and devices. Among them, photo-processing has been revealed to be a facile and general technique to achieve these aims. In this review, we discuss the mechanisms of photo-processing of perovskites and summarize the recent progress in the photo-processing of perovskites for synthesis, patterning, ion exchange, phase transition, assembly, and ion migration and redistribution. The applications of photo-processed perovskites in photovoltaic devices, lasers, photodetectors, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and optical data storage and encryption are also discussed. Finally, we provide an outlook on photo-processing of perovskites and propose the promising directions for future researches. This review is of significance to the researches and applications of perovskites and also to uncover new views on the light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Perovskite photodetectors have attracted much research and attention because of their outstanding photoelectric characteristics, such as good light harvesting capability, excellent carrier migration behavior, tunable band gap, and so on. Recently, the reported studies mainly focus on materials synthesis, device structure design, interface engineering and physical mechanism analysis to improve the device characteristics, including stability, sensitivity, response speed, device noise, etc. This paper systematically summarizes the application fields and device structures of several perovskite photodetectors, including perovskite photoconductors, perovskite photodiodes, and perovskite phototransistors. Moreover, based on their molecular structure, 3D, 2D, 1D, and 0D perovskite photodetectors are introduced in detail. The research achievements and applications of perovskite photodetectors are summarized. Eventually, the future research directions and main challenges of perovskite photodetectors are prospected, and some possible solutions are proposed. The aim of the work is to provide a new thinking direction for further improving the performance of perovskite photodetectors.

Abstract:Nanostructures of inorganic semiconductors have revolutionized many areas of electronics, optoelectronics and photonics. The controlled synthesis of semiconductor nanostructures could lead to novel physical properties, improved optoelectronic device performance and new areas for exploration. Lead halide perovskites have recently excited the photovoltaic research community owing to their high solar-conversion efficiencies and ease of solution processing; they also hold great promise for optoelectronic applications, such as light-emitting diodes and lasers. In this Review, we summarize recent developments in the synthesis and characterization of metal halide perovskite nanostructures with controllable compositions, dimensionality, morphologies and orientations. We examine the advantageous optical properties, improved stability and potential optoelectronic applications of these 1D and 2D single-crystal perovskite nanostructures and compare them with those of bulk perovskites and nanostructures of conventional semiconductors. Studies in which perovskite nanostructures have been used to study the fundamental physical properties of perovskites are also highlighted. Finally, we discuss the challenges in realizing halide perovskite nanostructures for optoelectronic and photonic applications and offer our perspectives on future opportunities and research directions.

Abstract:The oxide and halide perovskite materials with a ABX3 structure exhibit a number of excellent properties, including a high dielectric constant, electrochemical properties, a wide band gap, and a large absorption coefficient. These properties have led to a range of applications, including renewable energy and optoelectronics, where high-performance catalysts are needed. However, it is difficult for a single structure of perovskite alone to simultaneously fulfill the diverse needs of multiple applications, such as high performance and good stability at the same time. Consequently, perovskite nanocomposites have been developed to address the current limitations and enhance their functionality by combining perovskite with two or more materials to create complementary materials. This review paper categorizes perovskite nanocomposites according to their structural composition and outlines their synthesis methodologies, as well as their applications in various fields. These include fuel cells, electrochemical water splitting, CO2 mitigation, supercapacitors, and optoelectronic devices. Additionally, the review presents a summary of their research status, practical challenges, and future prospects in the fields of renewable energy and electronics.

Abstract:This review summarizes the current development and photocatalytic fundamentals of organic–inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs). Furthermore, the structural modification strategies for the enhancement of charge‐carrier transfer and long‐term stability are elucidated. Subsequently, photophysical and electrochemical characterization methods for analyzing the interfacial mechanisms and charge‐carrier dynamics of OIHPs are systematically classified. Eventually, diverse photocatalytic applications of OIHPs are detailed. Over the past few decades, organic–inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) as novel photocatalyst materials have attracted intensive attention for an impressive variety of photocatalytic applications due to their excellent photophysical (chemical) properties. Regarding practical application and future commercialization, the air–water stability and photocatalytic performance of OIHPs need to be further improved. Accordingly, studying modification strategies and interfacial interaction mechanisms is crucial. In this review, the current progress in the development and photocatalytic fundamentals of OIHPs is summarized. Furthermore, the structural modification strategies of OIHPs, including dimensionality control, heterojunction design, encapsulation techniques, and so on for the enhancement of charge‐carrier transfer and the enlargement of long‐term stability, are elucidated. Subsequently, the interfacial mechanisms and charge‐carrier dynamics of OIHPs during the photocatalytic process are systematically specified and classified via diverse photophysical and electrochemical characterization methods, such as time‐resolved photoluminescence measurements, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, transient photocurrent densities, and so forth. Eventually, various photocatalytic applications of OIHPs, including hydrogen evolution, CO2 reduction, pollutant degradation, and photocatalytic conversion of organic matter.

Abstract:<p>In recent years, halide perovskite materials have sparked intensive research, including their burgeoning development in the field of photo(electro)chemical catalysis. Halide perovskite materials are based on abundant and low‐cost elements with a rich structural composition and a variety of molecular and morphological dimensionalities. They possess versatile advantages over other photo(electro)catalytic materials owing to the facile adjustment of electronic properties via molecular and compositional engineering. Thus, the rapid development of perovskite photo(electro)catalysts in the past 4–5 years has opened up new opportunities for diverse photo(electro)chemical applications, ranging from photocatalytic organic reactions (e.g., chemical transformations, photopolymerization, and degradation) to solar‐to‐chemical fuel conversion (e.g., water splitting and CO<sub>2</sub> reduction). This review aims to provide an up‐to‐date discussion on recent applications of halide perovskite photo(electro)catalytic materials, emphasizing their crystal and morphological dimensionality, synthetic methodologies, heterojunction structures, and fundamental structure‐activity relationships. Furthermore, current challenges and future research directions for the rational design of halide perovskite materials to boost their overall catalytic performance and stability are identified and envisaged respectively.</p>

Abstract:Chalcogenide perovskites are a family of compounds related to perovskite structures or compositions, which have witnessed rapid advances in recent years. They possess favorable properties such as high stability, low toxicity, direct band gaps, good carrier transport abilities, strong light absorption, and potential luminescent properties, making them stand out in emerging applications, such as photovoltaics, photodetectors, light-emitting devices, and photocatalysts, among others. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the properties, synthesis, and applications of chalcogenide perovskites. First, we first survey the reported material structures/compositions and current understanding of their structural/optical/electrical properties, mechanics, magnetics, and stabilities. Furthermore, we discuss the synthesis strategies of these materials covering various material types such as powders, pellets, thin films, nanocrystals, and single crystals, with a focus on their potential applications, including photovoltaics, photodetectors, and other devices. Finally, we outline a brief conclusion and some prospects for the further research of chalcogenide perovskites, thus promoting more studies and developments in this field. This review can provide new insights into the fundamental properties and potential applications of chalcogenide perovskites, and thereby facilitating their further studies and developments.

Abstract:Lead-halide perovskites have demonstrated astonishing increases in power conversion efficiency in photovoltaics over the last decade. The most efficient perovskite devices now outperform industry-standard multi-crystalline silicon solar cells, despite the fact that perovskites are typically grown at low temperature using simple solution-based methods. However, the toxicity of lead and its ready solubility in water are concerns for widespread implementation. These challenges, alongside the many successes of the perovskites, have motivated significant efforts across multiple disciplines to find lead-free and stable alternatives which could mimic the ability of the perovskites to achieve high performance with low temperature, facile fabrication methods. This Review discusses the computational and experimental approaches that have been taken to discover lead-free perovskite-inspired materials, and the recent successes and challenges in synthesizing these compounds. The atomistic origins of the extraordinary performance exhibited by lead-halide perovskites in photovoltaic devices is discussed, alongside the key challenges in engineering such high-performance in alternative, next-generation materials. Beyond photovoltaics, this Review discusses the impact perovskite-inspired materials have had in spurring efforts to apply new materials in other optoelectronic applications, namely light-emitting diodes, photocatalysts, radiation detectors, thin film transistors and memristors. Finally, the prospects and key challenges faced by the field in advancing the development of perovskite-inspired materials towards realization in commercial devices is discussed.

Abstract:Epitaxial growth technology has garnered widespread attention in the field of perovskite solar cells for its potential to produce high-quality crystals with preferred orientations and superior photoelectric properties. However, achieving rational epitaxial growth in the fabrication process of perovskite solar cells still remains a challenging task. A thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of epitaxial growth and an appreciation of the unique advantages of the main epitaxial strategies are crucial for the effective application of this technique in the realm of metal halide perovskites. Unfortunately, due to the lack of a comprehensive summary of the epitaxial metal halide perovskite solar cells, current researchers have insufficiently explored the application of epitaxial growth methods, leading to a limited understanding of the underlying principles and immature process development. Therefore, this review systematically summarizes the principle of epitaxial growth technologies, the main epitaxial strategies, and the latest research progresses in its application to perovskite solar cells, aiming to assist readers in better understanding and applying this technique in the context of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:In the past decade, metal‐halide perovskites have attracted increasing attention in optoelectronics, due to their superior optoelectronic properties. However, inherent instabilities of conventional three‐dimensional (3D) perovskites over moisture, heat, and light remain a severe challenge before the realization of commercial application of metal‐halide perovskites. Interestingly, when the dimensions of metal‐halide perovskites are reduced to two dimensions (2D), many of the novel properties will arise, such as enlarged bandgap, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and large exciton binding energy. As a result, 2D metal‐halide perovskite‐based optoelectronic devices display excellent performance, particularly as ambient stable solar cells with excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE), high‐performance light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) with sharp emission peak, and high‐sensitive photodetectors. In this review, we first introduce the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of 2D perovskites. Then, the 2D perovskite‐based solar cells, LEDs, and photodetectors are discussed. Finally, a brief overview of the opportunities and challenges for 2D perovskite optoelectronics is presented.
