Given the comments of Dr Elisabeth Bik regarding this article “This paper belongs to a set of over 400 papers (as per February 2020) that share very similar Western blots with tadpole-like shaped bands, the same background pattern, and striking similarities in title structures, paper layout, bar graph design, and - in a subset - flow cytometry panels”, the journal requested the authors to provide the raw data. However, the authors were not able to provide raw data of sufficient quality and detail for the journal to independently audit the provenance and validity of the data, and therefore the Editor-in-Chief decided to retract the article.

Abstract:The article "Effects of fibroblast growth factors 2 and low intensity pulsed ultrasound on the repair of knee articular cartilage in rabbits" by Z.-F. Tang, H.-Y. Li, published in Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci 2018; 22 (8): 2447-2453 - PMID: 29762847 has been retracted by the Editor in Chief. Following some concerns raised on PubPeer (link: https://pubpeer.com/publications/F11DC0DC2B3DAB9753C11C8DC18822), the Editor in Chief has started an investigation to assess the validity of the results as well as possible figure manipulation. The authors have been informed about the journal's investigation but remained unresponsive and have not provided the study's raw data. The journal's investigation identified duplications between Control images A (4 weeks) and E (8 weeks), FHF2 C (4 weeks) and G (8 weeks), and FGF2+LIPU D (4 weeks) and H (8 weeks) of Figure 1. Additionally, duplications were identified between panels A and B of Figure 4. Consequently, the Editor in Chief mistrusts the results presented and has decided to retract the article. This article has been retracted. The Publisher apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

Abstract:Following the publication of this paper, it was drawn to the Editor's attention by a concerned reader that the GAPDH control western blotting data shown in Fig. 2B were strikingly similar to data appearing in different form in Fig. 1E in another article written by different authors at different research institutes [Liang T, Ye X, Liu Y, Qiu X, Li Z, Tian B and Yan D: FAM46B inhibits cell proliferation and cell cycle progression in prostate cancer through ubiquitination of β‐catenin. Exp Mol Med 50: 1‐12, 2018]. Owing to the fact that the contentious data in the above article had already been published prior to its submission to Molecular Medicine Reports , the Editor has decided that this paper should be retracted from the Journal. This article has been retracted at the request of the Editor-in-Chief. There were serious questions about the validity of the data contained in these articles: " … the Western blot bands in … papers are all very regularly spaced and have a smooth appearance in the shape of a dumbbell or tadpole, without any of the usual smudges or stains. All bands are placed on similar looking backgrounds, suggesting they were copy/pasted from other sources, or computer generated". Based on the latter findings, the Editor-in-Chief requested the authors to provide the raw data. However, the authors were not willing and/or able to fulfil this request and therefore the Editor-in-Chief decided to retract the article. As a consequence the writing in this article misled and deceived reviewers and readers of the journal and thus as a whole represents a gross misuse of the scientific publishing system. The scientific community takes a very strong view on this matter and apologies are offered to readers of the journal that this was not detected during the submission process.

The journal requested more information to investigate these claims but the original data are no longer available.The authors state: “Because the original data for this study could not be found, we do not have a definitive way to verify the authenticity of some data in the paper. Abstract:Following the publication of the above article, a concerned reader drew to the Editor's attention that the Transwell cell invasion assay data featured in Figs. 3 and 5, and the cell microscopic/morphological images shown in Fig. 4A and C, were strikingly similar to data appearing in different form in other articles written by different authors at different research institutes that had either already been published elsewhere prior to the submission of this paper to Oncology Reports , or which under consideration for publication at around the same time (several of which have now been retracted). In addition, overlapping sections of data were noted within Figs. 3 and 5, such that data which were intended to represent the results from differently performed experiments had apparently been derived from the same original source(s). In view of the fact that certain of these data had already apparently been published prior to the submission of this article for publication, the Editor of Oncology Reports has decided that this paper should be retracted from the Journal. After having been in contact with the authors, they agreed with the decision to retract the paper. The Editor apologizes to the readership for any inconvenience caused.
