Abstract:The name of Paulo Freire has reached near-iconic proportions in the United States, Latin America, and indeed in many parts of Europe. Like the cover comment by Jonathan Kozol on the U.S. edition of Freire’s major statement Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1990), his work has been typically received as a “brilliant methodology of a highly charged political character.” Freire’s ideas have been assimilated to the prevailing obsession of North American education, following a tendency in all the human and social sciences, with methods of verifying knowledge and, in schools, of teaching; that is, transmitting knowledge to otherwise unprepared students. Within the United States, it is not uncommon for teachers and administration to say that they are “using” the Freirean method in classrooms. What they mean by this is indeterminate. Sometimes it merely connotes that teachers try to be “interactive” with students; sometimes it signifies an attempt to structure class time as, in part, a dialogue between the teacher and students; some even mean to “empower” students by permitting them to talk in class without being ritualistically corrected as to the accuracy of their information, their grammar, or their formal mode of presentation, or to be punished for dissenting knowledge. All of these are commendable practices, but they hardly require Freire as a cover.

Abstract:In the so-called digital culture, there is a constant presence of radical transformations on the cognitive and affective dimensions of the relations established among teachers and students. Upon this ubiquitous accessibility of information, the very historical and hierarchically verticalized relation between teachers and students has been increasingly questioned. Upon this situation, the authors in this article aim at stating that the revitalization of concepts developed by Paulo Freire, mainly the ones discussed in the books: 'Pedagogy of Hope', that sought a re-encounter with 'Pedagogy of the Oppressed', 'Extension or Communication' and 'Pedagogy of Freedom' became essential to understanding how the relationship between teachers and students can be mutually re-signified. In these times of digital culture, we argue that the revitalization of the critical thinking proposed by Freire is able to foment a dialogical communication both in the pedagogical link shared by teachers and students and in the transformation of information into substantially and ethically experienced concepts. Such substantial and ethical experiences are the ones able to attest that the pedagogy of hope and the pedagogy of freedom are possible, provided they are constituted with the students and not for them.

Abstract:The current paradigm of mental health has fallen short in its promises to deliver better care and quality of life for those who lives with mental illness. Recent works have expressed the need for more comprehensive frameworks of research, in which phenomenology emerges as a fundamental tool for a new wave interdisciplinary studies with the humanities. In line with this project, this article hopes to explore the relation between education and phenomenologically oriented psychotherapy, through the work of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire. First, we will briefly expose Freire's biography and main ideas (such as the "banking model of education" and the creation of "culture circles"), showing how they can be useful during the clinical encounter. We will also highlight the importance of dialogical psychotherapy during situations of injustice and oppression. Finally, we will provide some insights that can help build a new paradigm of mental health that is based on a "praxis of freedom", whether in research or clinical practice. We call this proposal a "Psychotherapy of the Oppressed".

Abstract:Paulo Freire has been one of the most influential educationists of the 20th century. While many theorists in recent years have focused on the application of Freirean ideas, this paper concentrates on the philosophy which lies behind Freire's practice. The author considers the metaphysical, ontological, epistemological, and ethical dimensions to Freire's thought. A number of key moral principles in Freire's work are identified. The paper suggests that Freire's moral philosophy is built on a dialectical approach toward the world, a praxical view of knowledge and the human ideal, and a deep commitment to the liberation of the oppressed.

Abstract:En este artículo presentamos algunos planteamientos relacionados con la pedagogía libertaria de Freire. Este documento contiene cuatro partes centrales. En la primera, analizamos el concepto de alfabetización que da lugar a dos procesos: la lectura del mundo y la problematización de nuestra relación intersubjetiva y planetaria; ambos procesos se analizan en la segunda parte. En la tercera, discurrimos sobre las relaciones de poder opresor-oprimido y damos paso a la cuarta parte del documento, donde introducimos relaciones de poder productivo en la educación y orientamos nuestro proyecto pedagógico hacia los jóvenes, a quienes concebimos como sujetos políticos. A partir de este enfoque planteamos un conjunto de interrogantes dirigidas a redimensionar la praxis educadora. En las reflexiones finales afirmamos que abrazar esta pedagogía implica asumir nuestras responsabilidades por la opresión, las vejaciones y por el dolor de los jóvenes, renunciado a la simulación. Abstract In this paper, we present some concepts related to Freire’s Pedagogy of Liberty. This document contains four central parts. In the first, we analyze the concept of literacy, which derives into two processes: a reading of the world and the problematization of our intersubjective and planetary relationship. Both are analyzed in the second part. In the third, we discuss the political nature of education, we recover the oppressor-oppressed relationship, and then proceed to the fourth part of this document, where we introduce a productive power relationship in education, and we address the reconsideration of the educational praxis. In the final reflections, we affirm that embracing this pedagogy implies assuming our responsibilities for oppression, humiliation, and pain of the young people, renouncing to simulation. Abstract:As Paulo Freire’s education theory for social change and emancipation is being continually studied and disseminated in East Asia, it has faced skepticism as some educators are unfamiliar with its critical pedagogy or education for freedom concepts. In light of this, scholars have attempted to compare Freirean philosophies with concepts in Chinese philosophy of education as a way of bridging East and West. Diverging from previous studies that use popular Chinese philosophies (such as Confucianism) to connect with Freirean theory, this paper introduces an understudied but compatible Chinese philosophical thought, Mohism, for comparison with Freirean theory. Mohism is a political philosophy for the working class that expanded into grassroots movements for people’s welfare in ancient China. The Mohist bottom-up approach echoes the grassroots emancipatory pedagogy that underlies Freirean philosophy. A comparative analysis of education concepts in both philosophies reveals that despite differences in the educational content of Freirean theory and Mohism, there are similarities in their conceptualization of education for anti-oppression and praxis for social change. Implications for utilizing Mohist philosophy to contemplate Freirean philosophy within the East Asian educational context are also explored. Ultimately this paper revives educational concepts of Mohism that aligns with Freirean philosophy to a broader audience of scholars and educators.

Abstract:Today's educational system is in a quandary. On the one hand, colleges produce deep thinkers who possess skills necessary to adapt to an ever-changing world, but are less committed to the cause of resisting inequalities. On the other, there are students who have the passion for social reform, but are less concerned with higher order thinking skills. This investigation proposes a compromise by connecting the problem-posing method of Paolo Freire and the philosophy of education of John Dewey. This study uses the neo-pragmatic approach of Richard Rorty to open a space that seeks to overturn elitist school systems. It is argued that there is no necessary tension since critical pedagogy and liberal education are actually against institutional oppression and the authoritarian ways of elitist or dominant educational paradigms that emphasize the instrumental rather than the humanist purpose of learning. The right approach can be found in the belief that each person has a transcendental value. The freedom of every man makes manifest the vital role of liberal education in emancipating society from unjust and unequal systems through inclusivity and pluralism.

Abstract:September 2021 marks the centenary of the birth of one of the most influential figures in the history and philosophy of education, Paulo Freire (1921–1997). This special issue of LAIC offers a critical analysis of the continuing international impact of his ideas. The editors solicited scholars and educators from around the world to give testimony to the extent to which Freire's work on critical pedagogy has been influential in their contexts and how a Freirean perspective can contribute to the achievement of 'Quality Education,' the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's Sustainable Development Goal #4 (UNESCO SDG-4). Specifically, contributors were invited to discuss the continuing relevance of Freire's vision to the provision of 'Quality Education' in the field of language and intercultural communication.

Abstract:This paper aims to interrogate Freirean critical pedagogy via the work of Jacques Lacan in order to shed new light on psychoanalytic issues that arise when engaging in critical pedagogical work. First, through a close reading of Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, the author delineates Freire's conception of the human subject, the mechanisms that function to oppress subjects and prevent full humanization, and the process by which subjects can begin to imagine new possibilities outside of the oppressor/oppressed relationship. Next, careful consideration is given to Lacan's formulation of the function of the imaginary in the emergence of the subject, which was most clearly articulated in his seminal work The Mirror Stage as Formative of the Function of the I as Revealed in Psychoanalytic Experience. This engagement with these two thinkers emphasizes what Lacan can teach us about the complex relationship between identity construction, subjectivity, and the role of intersubjective relations in theorizing and creating a more just world.

Abstract:Within the last few years, the discourses of authoritarianism and the echoes of a fascist past have moved from the margins to the center of politics across the globe. Increasingly, pedagogy has been implicated in this process by becoming less a practice for freedom than an instrumentalized theory and practice for domination, particularly as the culture of education has been transformed to serve the culture of business or reduced to a regressive form of instrumental rationality. This lecture challenges this reactionary mode of education and pedagogy, particularly in its neoliberal versions, and explores how critical pedagogy might provide the theoretical and practical foundation for rethinking the purpose of education and the nature of politics itself, and how these two realms are inseparable. As a moral and political practice, pedagogy is represents not only a struggle over knowledge and values, but also over agency itself. Central to any viable notion of a critical pedagogy is the understanding that pedagogy is always a deliberate attempt on the part of educators to influence how and what knowledge and subjectivities are produced within particular sets of social relations. In this case, it draws attention to the ways in which knowledge, power, desire, and experience are produced under specific basic conditions of learning and in doing so rejects the notion that teaching is just a method or is removed from matters of values, norms, and power. In addition, central to such a task is rethinking the role of educators as public intellectuals and their responsibility not only to address crucial social problems but also to interrogate critically what it might mean to produce those pedagogical practices and formative cultures that are essential to any substantive democracy. An important issue addressed in this case is that pedagogy is always a moral and political practice and points not only to a struggle over agency and power, but also presupposes discourses of critique and possibility as part of a broader democratic project deeply implicated in addressing matters of economic and social justice and the grounds upon which life is lived and experienced.
Decolonizing nursing education: Reflecting on Paulo Freire's pedagogy of the oppressed

Abstract:Historically, nursing education's foundation has been framed by colonial practices of whiteness, which serves as a fulcrum for oppression, Western epistemic ideology, racial injustice, and health inequity. As a microcosm of the broader academy, nursing education must pivot to dismantle practices impeding the advancement of the profession and move to decolonize processes of professional edification. Decolonization is not a metaphor; it requires unlearning the deep socialization of Eurocentric perspectives embedded in nursing education and relearning in a new, inclusive manner that embraces historically marginalized knowledge systems and experiences. This paper aims to operationalize what this decolonization process would look like for nursing education while reflecting on Paula Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed. The authors will highlight the interrelationship of the main concepts of Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy, including liberation, critical consciousness, dialog, humanization, dehumanization, problem posing, and banking education.
Environmental Education in Brazil and the Influence of Paulo Freire

Abstract:In Brazil and around the world, the ideas of Paulo Freire have impacted the field of environmental education, at least since the 1970s. It is possible to observe and associate the influence of Paulo Freire, when environmental education emphasizes the political dimension of any and all pedagogic activity, as he so emphatically stated. Another central aspect of Freirean influence relates in particular to the objective that environmental education should make “participation” possible, as advocated by the first documents produced and disseminated by UNESCO. Although the topic of environmentalism, in its best-known sense and definition of the protection of nature and natural resources, was not initially at the core of his pedagogical thinking, a strong concern with the theme can be seen traversing his work in the 1990s. In this sense, the international academic institutionalization of environmental education and the support that this pedagogic and political movement received after the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, was crucial for consolidation by means of public policies and projects elaborated by NGOs as well as by the theoretical production and curricular changes that took place in universities around the world, with different thematic priorities, theoretical and methodological focuses, and impact on the population and on the natural and social environment. Since 2009, especially in Brazil and other Latin American countries, dissertations and theses have leaned toward this production, identifying and analyzing the increase of Freirean pedagogy in connection with environmental education, defined as “the political education of citizens.” Political actions in everyday pedagogical practices for social and environmental justice, alongside various other rights (e.g., cultural), are urgent issues to address. The connections between environmental education and Freirean pedagogy have contemporized both, as they clarify the central arguments of Paulo Freire’s political and pedagogic thought, which reaffirmed throughout his extensive production that access to education is a universal right, and that it is by means of education (including the environmental dimension) that political processes for the construction of just, democratic, and sustainable societies are solidified.

Abstract:This paper aims to evaluate the students’ feedback of Poetry course. This course includes a total of thirty-four poems of prominent poets ranging from the 14th century till18th century. The course contents are annexed as A. This study will evaluate the pedagogical appropriateness of the overall course and with a zero lecture in the course to critically evaluate the pedagogical appropriateness of the following four poems in particular. The study also aims at the evaluation of the course design to see whether management of course curriculum has an impact on the course overall success. The study applied the theory of ‘Pedagogic Critique’ presented and explicated in the work of Paulo Freire titled as ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed (Paulo Freire, 2000)’. Freire explains that power dynamics behind everything determines the way how any educational course and setting get underway and proceeded. Books, according to him, are never rated beyond their scope until they are associated with their expected readers and audience (Patton, 2017). The study finds out a mixture of complicated feedback from the students who appeared in their MA English course. The study was devised through a questionnaire indexed at the end of the paper. Their feedback was analysed and the conclusion was made. Most of the students through a resultant questionnaire were unable to reply exactly to the course they read and some of the students could not appropriately connect their initial aptitude to the courses they read and what they had initially antipiated. The study also finds out that some of the students selected their course vaguely without having any firsthand knowledge about they would later on study. Prologue to the Canterbury Tales were considered to be most complicated course since it has a little complicated archaic diction, whereas Spencer’s Faerie Queene was considered through a feedback to be outmoted and less universally applied to modern teaching practicum and literary pragmatics. Most pragmatic and creative work that was recommended and liked by both the teachers and studetns was ‘Paradise Lost’. The study eventually conludes that the potery-1 course should stand modied and there is a lot of room for research on this aspect. Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>Drawing on the work of Paulo Freire (e.g., 1970; 1972; 1973), the aim of this paper is to re-consider the potential impact that critical pedagogy could have on tourism education. Specifically, the authors consider the democratic and emancipatory potential of applying Freire's work, and opportunities for implementing a critical pedagogical approach across tourism curriculum. Joining Hall and Smyth (2016) we engage in a process of critically questioning pedagogical practices in an effort to dismantle dominant structures. This paper establishes the importance of Freire's work to tourism education, supported by a conceptual framework. It proposes ways to implement emancipatory practices, supporting the reconceptualisation and reorientation of tourism curriculum and emphasising the generation of social value.</p>

Influenced by liberation theology figures like Gustavo Gutiérrez, Freire envisioned education as a tool for conscientization, aiming to cultivate critical awareness among the oppressed. Freire's humanistic approach faces criticism, particularly concerning the ambiguity of its goals and potential psychological disturbances. The research methodology is rooted in an extensive literature review, incorporating both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data stems from direct references relevant to the research topic, such as scholarly journals and articles, while secondary data is derived from existing literature to construct a solid conceptual framework. Appropriate data analysis tools aligning with research objectives are employed to systematically evaluate the collected information. This methodology aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the theories and concepts essential to the research. The outcomes and discussions underscore the fundamental disparities between Freire's humanistic education and Islamic perspectives. While Freire advocates for critical consciousness and social liberation, Islam centers its education on the Quran and Hadith, emphasizing moral and spiritual responsibilities as Khalifah. Islam interprets freedom as the pursuit of goodness guided by divine revelations, rejecting liberal interpretations. The study concludes by accentuating the stark differences in worldview and values between Freirean humanism and Islamic education, shedding light on the diverse philosophical foundations underpinning these approaches.

Abstract:This paper enlists Paulo Freire's work to explore the interplay between technology and pedagogy from a decolonial approach, thus stressing the importance of adopting a critical stance to the facilitation of digital education experiences. It starts by denouncing digital education as entrapped in digital capitalism, contending how curricular practices are likely to be subjugated to technological function. Through such a conceptual lens, digital curriculum design is explored from a perspective of learning solidarity, aiming to disrupt the instrumentalization of education and creating educational experiences that cater for a humanizing process of education. The paper aims to contribute with ideas towards a framework of critical digital education, deeming the interactive and creative side of technologies as well as the socio-affective dimension of education crucial to the decolonization of different ways of (curricular) knowing.

Reflexão e Ação

Abstract:Este artigo analisa a educação brasileira em tempos de Covid-19, o uso e o fetiche das tecnologias da informação e comunicação (TICs) à luz das categorias de opressão e exclusão, presentes na obra de Paulo Freire. A pesquisa, bibliográfica e exploratória, a partir da vida e do pensamento freireano, estudou o incremento do uso das TICs durante a crise sanitária e as contradições que emergiram a partir das relações de opressão-libertação e inclusão-exclusão que impactaram a vida escolar neste cenário. Paulo Freire and Frantz Fanon: Two Faces of Emancipation

Abstract:In Paulo Freire’s emancipatory model, violence as a mode of struggle is rejected. The revolutionary movement should never appropriate violence in pursuing prospects of emancipation. For Freire, an authentic struggle for emancipation and autonomy does not utilize the praxis of the oppressor which is mainly characterized by dehumanization and violence. This emancipatory model also contends that the oppressor should also be subjected to emancipation as they have also been dehumanized in their subjection of the oppressed. Thus, liberation does not only pursue the humanization of the oppressed but also their oppressors. It follows, therefore, that physical violence is out of the picture as the revolutionary movement recognizes the humanity of the oppressed and her oppressor. Therefore, the movement headed by the oppressed does not operate within the praxis of their oppressors which, for Freire, is a negation of humanity. An alternative position, however, contends that violence is an indispensable aspect of the emancipatory movement. In fact, violence is not only a consequence of the conflict but, for Frantz Fanon, the overarching dynamic over the colonized order. An oppressive paradigm which, for Fanon, could only be overturned by counter-violence. The dismantlement of the colonial order implies the destruction of the “colonist’s sector” which in so doing, necessitates the utilization of violence in the struggle. This work, therefore, challenges the pacificist inclination of Freirean emancipatory model through the lenses of Fanon’s Wretched of the Earth. This paper argues that though ideal emancipatory politics should be discursive and dialogical which Freire advocates, violence remain to be an indispensable aspect of liberation and resistance. In order to ground these arguments, this paper will appropriate the case of the revolutionary movement of the Katipunan vis-à-vis the Reformists.

Abstract:This study is directed to counter the tendency that China's adult villager literacy programs have not been of much relevance to the innovation of poor rural communities and personal development. Based upon the analysis of the theoretical foundation of Paulo Freire Model—critical educational anthropology of action, this paper deals with the application of the model—Paulo Freire Method. The further discussion shows the significance of the main strategies of the Paulo Freire's anthropological Model of poor rural literacy, such as the subjective realization of local culture, raising of the mass's awareness, development of mass's experiences.

Abstract:Modern learning environments have evolved beyond traditional classrooms, encompassing various settings like digital networks, social media, communities, and urban landscapes. The defining characteristics of an educational space include purpose and intentionality, going beyond conventional boundaries and offering students practical, context-specific learning experiences. Engagement with public spaces and the constructed environment facilitates spatial engagement and participation. This text explores a critical pedagogy that aims to uncover institutional power and prevailing ideologies within everyday experiences, questioning the educational value of buildings, cities, streets, and walls. It examines the constructed environment as an educational tool, including cities, parks, houses, streets, public, and private spaces. Within the domain of educational research, urban public spaces and the built environment serve as crucial contexts for graduate students, providing experiential learning opportunities and an in-depth analysis of the intricate relationship between political and pedagogical rationales that shape urban spaces and structures. This exploration also extends to the spaces between buildings and the practices that influence them. Urban spaces offer genuine learning contexts, enhancing research skills and honing observational abilities. Students are encouraged to delve beneath the surface of familiarity, transcending self-evident truths. The text presents three case studies examining cultures formed by young individuals in schools, urban populations, small communities, and urban artists. These studies spotlight the educational significance embedded within the interplay of spatial configurations and the inhabitants of these spaces. Cover page:
