Abstract:In this paper we present a method for knot insertion and degree elevation of generalized B-splines (GB-splines) via the local representation of these curves as piecewise functions. The use of local structures makes the refinement routines simpler to understand and implement.

Abstract:In this paper we present a local fitting algorithm for converting smooth planar curves to B-splines. For a smooth planar curve a set of points together with their tangent vectors are first sampled from the curve such that the connected polygon approximates the curve with high accuracy and inflexions are detected by the sampled data efficiently. Then, a G^1 continuous Bezier spline curve is obtained by fitting the sampled data with shape preservation as well as within a prescribed accuracy. Finally, the Bezier spline is merged into a C^2 continuous B-spline curve by subdivision and control points adjustment. The merging is guaranteed to be within another error bound and with no more inflexions than the Bezier spline. In addition to shape preserving and error control, this conversion algorithm also benefits that the knots are selected automatically and adaptively according to local shape and error bound. A few experimental results are included to demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the algorithm.
RECONSTRUCTION OF SYMMETRIC B-SPLINE CURVES AND SURFACES

Abstract:A method to reconstruct symmetric B-spline curves and surfaces is presented.The symme- try property is realized by using symmetric knot vector and symmetric control points.Firstly,data points are divided into two parts based on the symmetry axis or symmetry plane extracted from data points.Then the divided data points are pararaeterized and a symmetric knot vector is selected in order to get symmetric B-spline basis functions.Constraint equations regarding the control points are deduced to keep the control points of the B-spline curve or surface to be symmetric with respect to the extracted symmetry axis or symmetry plane.Lastly,the constrained least squares fitting problem is solved with the Lagrange multiplier method.Two examples from industry are given to show that the proposed method is efficient,robust and able to meet the general engineering requirements.

Abstract:Recently, the use of B-spline curves/surfaces to fit point clouds by iteratively repositioning the B-spline's control points on the basis of geometrical rules has gained in popularity because of its simplicity, scalability, and generality. We distinguish between two types of fitting, interpolation and approximation. Interpolation generates a B-spline surface that passes through the data points, whereas approximation generates a B-spline surface that passes near the data points, minimizing the deviation of the surface from the data points. For surface interpolation, the data points are assumed to be in grids, whereas for surface approximation the data points are assumed to be randomly distributed. In this paper, an iterative geometric interpolation method, as well as an approximation method, which is based on the framework of the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, is discussed. These two iterative methods are compared with standard fitting methods using some complex examples, and the advantages and shortcomings of our algorithms are discussed. Furthermore, we introduce two methods to accelerate the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, as well as a method to impose geometric constraints, such as reflectional symmetry, on the iterative geometric interpolation process, and a novel fairing method for non-uniform complex data points. Complex examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:T-spline surface fitting from input triangular mesh is a common task in T-splines related CAD applications. One major objective to this problem is creating T-spline surface with fewer control points and higher accuracy. This paper proposes several effective approaches to improve fitting results. The proposed approaches include an incremental sampling strategy for robust initial fitting, a global effective re-parameterization algorithm called NUFR (non-uniform faithful re-parameterization) for a proper mesh parameterization, and a GA (genetic algorithm) based T-mesh knot structure optimization process for an optimal knot structure. The tradeoff between mesh simplicity and fitting accuracy can be adjusted with a few input parameters. Experiments on different models are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of these approaches. Compared with the classic adaptive fitting result, the result of the proposed algorithm has smaller RMS error. And typically, the number of control points will be reduced by about 30%.
Effective grading refinement for locally linearly independent LR B-splines

Abstract:We present a new refinement strategy for locally refined B-splines which ensures the local linear independence of the basis functions. The strategy also guarantees the spanning of the full spline space on the underlying locally refined mesh. The resulting mesh has nice grading properties which grant the preservation of shape regularity and local quasi uniformity of the elements in the refining process.

Abstract:The regularity of refinable functions has been analysed in an extensive literature and is well-understood in two cases: 1) univariate 2) multivariate with an isotropic dilation matrix. The general (non-isotropic) case offered a great resistance. It was done only recently by developing the matrix method. In this paper we make the next step and extend the Littlewood-Paley type method, which is very efficient in the aforementioned special cases, to general equations with arbitrary dilation matrices. This gives formulas for the higher order regularity in $W_2^k(\mathbb{R}^n)$ by means of the Perron eigenvalue of a finite-dimensional linear operator on a special cone. Applying those results to recently introduced tile B-splines, we prove that they can have a higher smoothness than the classical ones of the same order. Moreover, the two-digit tile B-splines have the minimal support of the mask among all refinable functions of the same order of approximation. This proves, in particular, the lowest algorithmic complexity of the corresponding subdivision schemes. Examples and numerical results are provided.

Solutions to problems of the classical algorithms for degree elevation of B-spline curves

Abstract:Degree elevation of B-spline curves is a common technique in surface design and computer aided geometric modeling. It is a fundamental tool in CAD systems based on B-spline, and frequently used in geometric design of composite curves, sweeping and skinning surfaces. Unfortunately, it has been found that there are serious errors in the classical algorithms for degree raising when used for degree elevation of the B-spline curves except periodic and endpoint-interpolating B-spline curves. In this paper two improved algorithms are presented for solving the problems of Degree Elevation of B-spline Curves published in Computer Aided Geometric Design by Prautzsch in 1984. One of them is based on a general method for inserting knots into B-spline curves, and another on converting the original curves into endpoint-interpolating curves.

Abstract:This paper proposes a method to construct a B-spline surface that interpolates the specified four groups of boundary derivative curves in the B-spline form. The discontinuity can be bounded by an arbitrary geometric invariant (epsilon) over right arrow as the tolerance. The method first handles the six types of the compatibility problems by continuity-preserving reparameterization, knot-insertion and local control-point tuning. The transformed boundary conditions are then parametrically compatible, so the Coons strategy can be applied to construct the final interpolant. Not only can it be used in the reliable geometric modeling, but the approach also can be applied to many other algorithms that require compatibility guarantee. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:SummaryA local grid refinement scheme for the material point method with B‐spline basis functions (BSMPM) is developed based on the concept of bridging domain approach. The fine grid is defined in the local large‐deformation regions to accurately capture the complex material responses, whereas other spatial domains are discritized by coarse grids. In the overlapping domain between the fine and coarse grids, the constraint of particle displacements obtained with different grids is enforced using the Lagrange multiplier method to eliminate the spurious stress reflection at the fine/coarse grid interface. Representative numerical examples have shown that the BSMPM simulations with the proposed local grid refinement scheme could provide the solutions in good agreement with those obtained with the uniformly fine grid, and that no significant spurious stress reflection is induced at the fine/coarse grid interface, even for the bridging domain size as small as the cell size of the fine grid. It is also found that the proposed local grid refinement method can significantly reduce the BSMPM computational time compared with the cases for uniformly fine grids. A multitime‐step algorithm is presented and shown to considerably enhance the efficiency of the present local grid refinement scheme with no compromise in accuracy.

Meanwhile, NURBS has already become the de facto industrial standard in existing CAD/CAM systems. Therefore, it is required to study how to blend two B-spline surfaces. However, two arbitrary B-spline surfaces (called base surfaces) are hard to be blended with a B-spline surface (called blending surface) because the knot vectors of the two base surfaces are usually mismatched. In this paper, we propose a curve-based spline representation, i.e., the semi-structured B-spline surface, which is generated by skinning a series of B-spline curves with different knot vectors. By assigning suitable knot vectors to the head and tail skinned curves, the semi-structured B-spline surface can blend two B-spline surfaces smoothly without disturbing them at all. We formulate the B-spline surface blending problem as an optimization problem with continuity constraints, and the continuity between the base and blending surfaces can reach G 2 or C 2 . Examples illustrated in this paper validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method.

Abstract:Converting quad meshes to smooth manifolds, guided subdivision offers a way to combine the good highlight line distributions of recent G-spline constructions with the refinability of subdivision surfaces. Specifically, we present a C2 subdivision algorithm of polynomial degree bi-6 and a curvature bounded algorithm of degree bi-5. We prove that the common eigen-structure of this class of subdivision algorithms is determined by their guide and demonstrate that the eigenspectrum (speed of contraction) can be adjusted without harming the shape.

Abstract:Local refinement is widely applied in surface modeling. This paper proposes the concept of influence knot set, and uses it to establish a new algorithm for the local refinement of T-spline surfaces, whose effectiveness is demonstrated by several examples. Compared with existing algorithms, the present one may have two advantages: (a) it does not produce excessive propagation of control points because the number of additional control points is reduced; (b) it simplifies the process of judging whether an additional control point needs to be added or not, and so the final T-mesh topology can be obtained more easily.

Efficient evaluation of Bernstein-Bézier coefficients of B-spline basis functions over one knot span

Abstract:New differential-recurrence relations for B-spline basis functions are given. Using these relations, a recursive method for finding the Bernstein-Bézier coefficients of B-spline basis functions over a single knot span is proposed. The algorithm works for any knot sequence and has an asymptotically optimal computational complexity. Numerical experiments show that the new method gives results which preserve a high number of digits when compared to an approach which uses the well-known de Boor-Cox formula.

Abstract:The problem of constructing a normalized hierarchical basis for adaptively refined spline spaces is addressed. Multilevel representations are defined in terms of a hierarchy of basis functions, reflecting different levels of refinement. When the hierarchical model is constructed by considering an underlying sequence of bases {Γℓ}ℓ=0,…,N−1$$\{\Gamma ^{\ell }\}_{\ell =0,\ldots ,N-1}$$ with properties analogous to classical tensor-product B-splines, we can define a set of locally supported basis functions that form a partition of unity and possess the property of coefficient preservation, i.e., they preserve the coefficients of functions represented with respect to one of the bases Γℓ$$\Gamma ^{\ell }$$. Our construction relies on a certain truncation procedure, which eliminates the contributions of functions from finer levels in the hierarchy to coarser level ones. Consequently, the support of the original basis functions defined on coarse grids is possibly reduced according to finer levels in the hierarchy. This truncation mechanism not only decreases the overlapping of basis supports, but it also guarantees strong stability of the construction. In addition to presenting the theory for the general framework, we apply it to hierarchically refined tensor-product spline spaces, under certain reasonable assumptions on the given knot configuration.

Abstract:With the advent of isogeometric analysis, the modeling of spline solids became an important topic. In this paper, we present a discrete volume parameterization method for tetrahedral (tet) mesh models and an iterative fitting algorithm with a B-spline solid. The discrete volume parameterization method maps the vertices of a tet mesh into a parameter domain by solving a system of linear equations. Each equation is explicitly constructed for an inner vertex in terms of the geometric information adjacent to the inner vertex. Moreover, we show the validity of the parameterization system of linear equations thus constructed. Next, because the number of tet mesh vertices is usually very large, we develop an iterative algorithm for fitting a tet mesh with a B-spline solid. The iterative algorithm exploits the geometric information of the control hexahedral (hex) mesh and the local support property of the spline function, so the total amount of computation in each iteration is unchanged when the number of control hex mesh vertices of the B-spline solid is increased. Therefore, the iterative fitting algorithm performs very well in incremental fitting of a tet mesh with a large number of vertices. Finally, four experimental examples presented in this paper show the efficiency and effectiveness of the developed algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose the generalized B divided difference, with which the (k−1)th derivative of B-spline curves of order k can be obtained directly without the need to compute the first (k−2) derivatives as before. Based on the generalized B divided difference, the necessary and sufficient condition for degree-reducible B-spline curves is presented. Algorithms for degree reduction of B-spline curves are proposed using the constrained optimization methods.

Abstract:An integer generalized spline is a set of vertex labels on an edge-labeled graph that satisfy the condition that if two vertices are joined by an edge, the vertex labels are congruent modulo the edge label. Foundational work on these objects comes from Gilbert, Polster, and Tymoczko, who generalize ideas from geometry/topology (equivariant cohomology rings) and algebra (algebraic splines) to develop the notion of generalized splines. Gilbert, Polster, and Tymoczko prove that the ring of splines on a graph can be decomposed in terms of splines on its subgraphs (in particular, on trees and cycles), and then fully analyze splines on trees. Following Handschy-Melnick-Reinders and Rose, we analyze splines on cycles, in our case integer generalized splines. The primary goal of this paper is to establish two new bases for the module of integer generalized splines on cycles: the triangulation basis and the King basis. Unlike bases in previous work, we are able to characterize each basis element completely in terms of the edge labels of the underlying cycle. As an application we explicitly construct the multiplication table for the ring of integer generalized splines in terms of the King basis.

Abstract:Multi-degree splines are smooth piecewise-polynomial functions where the pieces can have different degrees. We describe a simple algorithmic construction of a set of basis functions for the space of multi-degree splines, with similar properties to standard B-splines. These basis functions are called multi-degree B-splines (or MDB-splines). The construction relies on an extraction operator that represents all MDB-splines as linear combinations of local B-splines of different degrees. This enables the use of existing efficient algorithms for B-spline evaluations and refinements in the context of multi-degree splines. A Matlab implementation is provided to illustrate the computation and use of MDB-splines.
