Abstract:Cousin's lemma is a compactness principle that naturally arises when studying the gauge integral, a generalisation of the Lebesgue integral. We study the axiomatic strength of Cousin's lemma for various classes of functions, using Friedman and Simpson's reverse mathematics in second-order arithmetic. We prove that, over $\mathsf{RCA}_0$: (i) Cousin's lemma for continuous functions is equivalent to $\mathsf{WKL}_0$; (ii) Cousin's lemma for Baire class 1 functions is equivalent to $\mathsf{ACA}_0$; (iii) Cousin's lemma for Baire class 2 functions, or for Borel functions, are both equivalent to $\mathsf{ATR}_0$ (modulo some induction).

Abstract:We propose a generalization of Bailey's lemma, useful for proving $q$-series identities. As an application, generalizations of Euler's identity, the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, and the Andrews-Gordon identities are derived. This generalized Bailey lemma also allows one to derive identities for the branching functions of higher-level $A^{(1)}_1$ cosets.

Abstract:We prove that if (M,\mathcal{X}) and (M,\mathcal{Y}) are countable models of the theory \mathrm{WKL}^{*}_{0} such that \mathrm{I}\Sigma_{1}(A) fails for some A \in \mathcal{X}\cap \mathcal{Y} , then (M,\mathcal{X}) and (M,\mathcal{Y}) are isomorphic. As a consequence, the analytic hierarchy collapses to \Delta^{1}_{1} provably in \mathrm{WKL}^{*}_{0} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{1} , and \mathrm{WKL} is the strongest \Pi^{1}_{2} statement that is \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{1} . Applying our results to the \Delta^{0}_{n} -definable sets in models of \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{n} that also satisfy an appropriate relativization of weak König’s lemma, we prove that for each n \ge 1 , the set of \Pi^{1}_{2} sentences that are \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{n} is computably enumerable. In contrast, we prove that the set of \Pi^{1}_{2} sentences that are \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} is \Pi_{2} -complete. This answers a question of Towsner. We also show that \mathrm{RCA}_{0} + \mathrm{RT}^{2}_{2} is \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{2} if and only if it is conservative over \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{2} with respect to \forall \Pi^{0}_{5} sentences.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a system AID (Alogtime Inductive Definitions) of bounded arithmetic. The main feature of AID is to allow a form of inductive definitions, which was extracted from Buss' propositional consistency proof of Frege systems F. We show that AID proves the soundness of F, and conversely any \Sigma^b_0-theorem in AID yields boolean sentences of which F has polysize proofs. Further we define \Sigma^b_1-faithful interpretations between AID + \Sigma b^_0 - CA and a quantified theory QALV of an equational system ALV in P. Clote. Hence ALV also proves the soundness of F.

Abstract:A cyclic proof system gives us another way of representing inductive definitions and efficient proof search. In 2011 Brotherston and Simpson conjectured the equivalence between the provability of the classical cyclic proof system and that of the classical system of Martin-Lof's inductive definitions. This paper studies the conjecture for intuitionistic logic. This paper first points out that the countermodel of FOSSACS 2017 paper by the same authors shows the conjecture for intuitionistic logic is false in general. Then this paper shows the conjecture for intuitionistic logic is true under arithmetic, namely, the provability of the intuitionistic cyclic proof system is the same as that of the intuitionistic system of Martin-Lof's inductive definitions when both systems contain Heyting arithmetic HA. For this purpose, this paper also shows that HA proves Podelski-Rybalchenko theorem for induction and Kleene-Brouwer theorem for induction. These results immediately give another proof to the conjecture under arithmetic for classical logic shown in LICS 2017 paper by the same authors.

Abstract:We analyze the axiomatic strength of the following theorem due to Rival and Sands in the style of reverse mathematics. "Every infinite partial order $P$ of finite width contains an infinite chain $C$ such that every element of $P$ is either comparable with no element of $C$ or with infinitely many elements of $C$." Our main results are the following. The Rival-Sands theorem for infinite partial orders of arbitrary finite width is equivalent to $\mathsf{I}\Sigma^0_2 + \mathsf{ADS}$ over $\mathsf{RCA}_0$. For each fixed $k \geq 3$, the Rival-Sands theorem for infinite partial orders of width $\leq\! k$ is equivalent to $\mathsf{ADS}$ over $\mathsf{RCA}_0$. The Rival-Sands theorem for infinite partial orders that are decomposable into the union of two chains is equivalent to $\mathsf{SADS}$ over $\mathsf{RCA}_0$. Here $\mathsf{RCA}_0$ denotes the recursive comprehension axiomatic system, $\mathsf{I}\Sigma^0_2$ denotes the $\Sigma^0_2$ induction scheme, $\mathsf{ADS}$ denotes the ascending/descending sequence principle, and $\mathsf{SADS}$ denotes the stable ascending/descending sequence principle. To our knowledge, these versions of the Rival-Sands theorem for partial orders are the first examples of theorems from the general mathematics literature whose strength is exactly characterized by $\mathsf{I}\Sigma^0_2 + \mathsf{ADS}$, by $\mathsf{ADS}$, and by $\mathsf{SADS}$. Furthermore, we give a new purely combinatorial result by extending the Rival-Sands theorem to infinite partial orders that do not have infinite antichains, and we show that this extension is equivalent to arithmetical comprehension over $\mathsf{RCA}_0$.

Linear lambda Calculus with Explicit Substitutions as Proof-Search in Deep Inference

Abstract:SBV is a deep inference system that extends the set of logical operators of multiplicative linear logic with the non commutative operator Seq. We introduce the logical system SBVr which extends SBV by adding a self-dual atom-renaming operator to it. We prove that the cut elimination holds on SBVr. SBVr and its cut free subsystem BVr are complete and sound with respect to linear lambda calculus with explicit substitutions. Under any strategy, a sequence of evaluation steps of any linear lambda-term M becomes a process of proof-search in SBVr (BVr) once M is mapped into a formula of SBVr. Completeness and soundness follow from simulating linear beta-reduction with explicit substitutions as processes. The role of the new renaming operator of SBVr is to rename channel-names on-demand. This simulates the substitution that occurs in a beta-reduction. Despite SBVr is a minimal extension of SBV its proof-search can compute all boolean functions, as linear lambda-calculus with explicit substitutions can compute all boolean functions as well. So, proof search of SBVr and BVr is at least ptime-complete.

Abstract:In this paper we give an ordinal analysis of the theory of second order arithmetic. We do this by working with proof trees -- that is, "deductions" which may not be well-founded. Working in a suitable theory, we are able to represent functions on proof trees as yet further proof trees satisfying a suitable analog of well-foundedness. Iterating this process allows us to represent higher order functions as well: since functions on proof trees are just proof trees themselves, these functions can easily be extended to act on proof trees which are themselves understood as functions. The corresponding system of ordinals parallels this, using higher order collapsing function.

Reverse mathematics of regular countable second countable spaces

Abstract:We study the reverse mathematics of characterization theorems of regular countable second countable spaces (or $CSCS$ for short). We prove that arithmetic comprehension is equivalent over $\textbf{RCA}_0$ to every $T_3$ $CSCS$ being metrizable, and we characterize the $T_3$ spaces which are metrizable over $\textbf{RCA}_0$. We show that Lynn's theorem for $CSCS$ can be carried out in $\textbf{ACA}_0$, namely that every zero dimensional separable space is homeomorphic to the order topology of a linear order. We also show that arithmetic comprehension is equivalent to every $T_2$ compact $CSCS$ being well-orderable. From general topology, we know that the locally compact $T_2$ $CSCS$ are the well-orderable $CSCS$, and that the $T_3$ scattered $CSCS$ are the completely metrizable $CSCS$. We show that these characterizations and a few others are equivalent to arithmetic transfinite recursion over $\textbf{RCA}_0$. We also find a few statments that are equivalent to $\Pi^1_1$ comprehension. In particular we show that every $T_3$ $CSCS$ has a Cantor Bendixson rank and that every $T_3$ $CSCS$ is the disjoint union of a scattered space and dense in itself space are equivalent to $\Pi^1_1$ comprehension over $\textbf{RCA}_0$.

Abstract:Abstract A fragment with the same provably recursive functions as n iterated inductive definitions is obtained by restricting second order arithmetic in the following way. The underlying language allows only up to n + 1 nested second order quantifications and those are in such a way. that no second order variable occurs free in the scope of another second order quantifier. The amount of induction on arithmetical formulae only affects the arithmetical consequences of these theories, whereas adding induction for arbitrary formulae increases the strength by one inductive definition.

Abstract:Logical relations constitute a key method for reasoning about contextual equivalence of programs in higher-order languages. They are usually developed on a per-case basis, with a new theory required for each variation of the language or of the desired notion of equivalence. In the present paper we introduce a general construction of (step-indexed) logical relations at the level of Higher-Order Mathematical Operational Semantics, a highly parametric categorical framework for modeling the operational semantics of higher-order languages. Our main result asserts that for languages whose weak operational model forms a lax bialgebra, the logical relation is automatically sound for contextual equivalence. Our abstract theory is shown to instantiate to combinatory logics and $\lambda$-calculi with recursive types, and to different flavours of contextual equivalence.

Cyclic proofs for arithmetical inductive definitions

Abstract:We investigate the cyclic proof theory of extensions of Peano Arithmetic by (finitely iterated) inductive definitions. Such theories are essential to proof theoretic analyses of certain `impredicative' theories; moreover, our cyclic systems naturally subsume Simpson's Cyclic Arithmetic. Our main result is that cyclic and inductive systems for arithmetical inductive definitions are equally powerful. We conduct a metamathematical argument, formalising the soundness of cyclic proofs within second-order arithmetic by a form of induction on closure ordinals, thence appealing to conservativity results. This approach is inspired by those of Simpson and Das for Cyclic Arithmetic, however we must further address a difficulty: the closure ordinals of our inductive definitions (around Church-Kleene) far exceed the proof theoretic ordinal of the appropriate metatheory (around Bachmann-Howard), so explicit induction on their notations is not possible. For this reason, we rather rely on formalisation of the theory of (recursive) ordinals within second-order arithmetic.

Abstract:In this paper we extend the research programme in algebraic proof theory from axiomatic extensions of the full Lambek calculus to logics algebraically captured by certain varieties of normal lattice expansions (normal LE-logics). Specifically, we generalise the residuated frames in [34] to arbitrary signatures of normal lattice expansions (LE). Such a generalization provides a valuable tool for proving important properties of LE-logics in full uniformity. We prove semantic cut elimination for the display calculi D.LE associated with the basic normal LE-logics and their axiomatic extensions with analytic inductive axioms. We also prove the finite model property (FMP) for each such calculus D.LE, as well as for its extensions with analytic structural rules satisfying certain additional properties.

Abstract:We report on yet another formalization of the Church-Rosser property in lambda-calculi, carried out with the proof environment Beluga. After the well-known proofs of confluence for beta-reduction in the untyped settings, with and without Takahashi's complete developments method, we concentrate on eta-reduction and obtain the result for beta-eta modularly. We further extend the analysis to typed-calculi, in particular System F. Finally, we investigate the idea of pursuing the encoding directly in Beluga's meta-logic, as well as the use of Beluga's logic programming engine to search for counterexamples.

Reflection ranks via infinitary derivations

Abstract:There is no infinite sequence of $\Pi^1_1$-sound extensions of $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ each of which proves $\Pi^1_1$-reflection of the next. This engenders a well-founded ``reflection ranking'' of $\Pi^1_1$-sound extensions of $\mathsf{ACA}_0$. For any $\Pi^1_1$-sound theory $T$ extending $\mathsf{ACA}^+_0$, the reflection rank of $T$ equals the proof-theoretic ordinal of $T$. This provides an alternative characterization of the notion of ``proof-theoretic ordinal,'' which is one of the central concepts of proof theory. In this note we provide an alternative proof of this theorem using cut-elimination for infinitary derivations.

Abstract:We address several questions of Donald Monk related to irredundance and spread of Boolean algebras, gaining both some ZFC knowledge and consistency results. We show in ZFC that irr(B_0 times B_1)= max(irr(B_0),irr(B_1)). We prove consistency of the statement ``there is a Boolean algebra B such that irr(B)<s(B otimes B)'' and we force a superatomic Boolean algebra B_* such that s(B_*)=inc(B_*)=kappa, irr(B_*)=Id(B_*)=kappa^+ and Sub(B_*)=2^(kappa^+). Next we force a superatomic algebra B_0 such that irr(B_0)<inc(B_0) and a superatomic algebra B_1 such that t(B_1)>Aut(B_1). Finally we show that consistently there is a Boolean algebra B of size lambda such that there is no free sequence in B of length lambda, there is an ultrafilter of tightness lambda (so t(B)=lambda) and lambda notin Depth_(Hs)(B).

In particular, we provide two representation theorems for preferential inference relations satisfying WD and RC respectively. Analogues of Shepherdson's Theorem for a language with exponentiation

Abstract:In 1964 Shepherdson proved the following fact: a discretely ordered semiring $\mathcal{M}^+$ satisfies $\sf{IOpen}$ (open, or quantifier free, induction) iff the corresponding ring $\mathcal{M}$ is an integer part of the real closure of the quotient field of $\mathcal{M}$. In this paper, we consider the open induction in the expanded languages with the exponentiation and the power function and try to find a similar criterion for models of these theories. For several expansions $\mathsf T$ of the theory of real closed fields we obtain analogues of Shepherdson's Theorem in the following sense: if an exponential field $\mathcal R$ is a model of $\mathsf T$ and discretely ordered ring $\mathcal M$ is an (exponential) integer part of $\mathcal R$, then $\mathcal M^+$ is a model of the open induction in the expanded language. The proof of the opposite implications remains an open question, but for some finite extension of the usual open induction we can prove the following theorem: for any discretely ordered ring $\mathcal M$ holds $\mathcal M^+$ satisfies this finite extension iff there is an exponential real closed field with the Bernoulli inequality $\mathcal R$ such that $\mathcal M$ is an exponential integer part of $\mathcal R$. After that, we consider a nonstandard o-minimal exponential field, constructed in the paper of van den Dries, Macintyre, Marker and using it and the results above, construct nonstandard models of the open induction in the expanded languages and obtain independence results.

Abstract:We exploit (co)inductive specifications and proofs to approach the evaluation of low-level programs for the Unlimited Register Machine (URM) within the Coq system, a proof assistant based on the Calculus of (Co)Inductive Constructions type theory. Our formalization allows us to certify the implementation of partial functions, thus it can be regarded as a first step towards the development of a workbench for the formal analysis and verification of both converging and diverging computations.
