Abstract:Parseval frames can be thought of as redundant or linearly dependent coordinate systems for Hilbert spaces, and have important applications in such areas as signal processing, data compression, and sampling theory. We extend the notion of a Parseval frame for a fixed Hilbert space to that of a moving Parseval frame for a vector bundle over a manifold. Many vector bundles do not have a moving basis, but in contrast to this every vector bundle over a paracompact manifold has a moving Parseval frame. We prove that a sequence of sections of a vector bundle is a moving Parseval frame if and only if the sections are the orthogonal projection of a moving orthonormal basis for a larger vector bundle. In the case that our vector bundle is the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold, we prove that a sequence of vector fields is a Parseval frame for the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold if and only if the vector fields are the orthogonal projection of a moving orthonormal basis for the tangent bundle of a larger Riemannian manifold.

Abstract:Binary Parseval frames share many structural properties with real and complex ones. On the other hand, there are subtle differences, for example that the Gramian of a binary Parseval frame is characterized as a symmetric idempotent whose range contains at least one odd vector. Here, we study binary Parseval frames obtained from the orbit of a vector under a group representation, in short, binary Parseval group frames. In this case, the Gramian of the frame is in the algebra generated by the right regular representation. We identify equivalence classes of such Parseval frames with binary functions on the group that satisfy a convolution identity. This allows us to find structural constraints for such frames. We use these constraints to catalogue equivalence classes of binary Parseval frames obtained from group representations. As an application, we study the performance of binary Parseval frames generated with abelian groups for purposes of error correction. We show that $Z_p^q$ is always preferable to $Z_{p^q}$ when searching for best performing codes associated with binary Parseval group frames.

Abstract:Fusion frames are a very active area of research today because of their myriad of applications in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, engineering, medicine, signal and image processing and much more. They provide a great flexibility for designing sets of vectors for applications and are therefore prominent in all these areas, including e.g. mitigating the effects of noise in a signal or giving robustness to erasures. In this chapter, we present the fundamentals of fusion frame theory with an emphasis on their delicate relation to frame theory. The goal here is to provide researchers and students with an easy entry into this topic. Proofs for fusion frames will be self-contained and differences between frames and fusion frames are analyzed. In particular, we focus on the subtleties of fusion frame duality. We also provide a reproducible research implementation.

Abstract:Fusion frame theory is an emerging mathematical theory that provides a natural framework for performing hierarchical data processing. A fusion frame is a frame-like collection of subspaces in a Hilbert space, thereby generalizing the concept of a frame for signal representation. In this paper, we study the existence and construction of fusion frames. We first present a complete characterization of a special class of fusion frames, called Parseval fusion frames. The value of Parseval fusion frames is that the inverse fusion frame operator is equal to the identity and therefore signal reconstruction can be performed with minimal complexity. We then introduce two general methods -- the spatial complement and the Naimark complement -- for constructing a new fusion frame from a given fusion frame. We then establish existence conditions for fusion frames with desired properties. In particular, we address the following question: Given $M, N, m \in \NN$ and $\{\lambda_j\}_{j=1}^M$, does there exist a fusion frame in $\RR^M$ with $N$ subspaces of dimension $m$ for which $\{\lambda_j\}_{j=1}^M$ are the eigenvalues of the associated fusion frame operator? We address this problem by providing an algorithm which computes such a fusion frame for almost any collection of parameters $M, N, m \in \NN$ and $\{\lambda_j\}_{j=1}^M$. Moreover, we show how this procedure can be applied, if subspaces are to be added to a given fusion frame to force it to become Parseval.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a continuous biframe in a Hilbert space which is a generalization of discrete biframe in Hilbert space. Representation theorem for this type of generalized frame is verified and some characterizations of this biframe with the help of a invertible operator is given. Here we also introduce the concept of continuous biframe for the tensor products of Hilbert spaces and give an example. Further, we study dual continuous biframe and continuous biframe Bessel multiplier in Hilbert spaces and their tensor products.

Unbounded Hamiltonians generated by Parseval frames

Abstract:In \cite{BK} Parseval frames were used to define bounded Hamiltonians, both in finite and in infinite dimesional Hilbert spaces. Here we continue this analysis, with a particular focus on the discrete spectrum of Hamiltonian operators defined as a weighted infinite sum of rank one operators defined by some Parseval frame living in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. The main difference with \cite{BK} is that, here, the operators we consider are mostly unbounded. This is an useful upgrade with respect to our previous results, since physically meaningful Hamiltonians are indeed often unbounded. However, due to the fact that frames (in general) are not bases, the definition of an Hamiltonian is not so easy, and part of our results goes in this direction. Also, we discuss the eigenvalues of the Hamiltonians, and we discuss some physical applications of our framework.

Abstract:In frame theory literature, there are several generalizations of frame, K-fusion frame presents a flavour of one such generalization, basically it is an intertwined replica of K-frame and fusion frame. K-fusion frames come naturally, having significant applications, when one needs to reconstruct functions (signals) from a large data in the range of a bounded linear operator. Motivated by the concept of weaving frames, in this paper we study wovenness of K-fusion frames. This article presents characterizations of weaving K-fusion frames. Paley-Wiener type perturbations and conditions on erasure of frame components are discussed to examine wovenness.

Abstract:A new notion in frame theory has been introduced recently that called woven frames. %From the perspective of others, Woven and weaving frames are powerful tools for pre-processing signals and distributed data processing. The purpose of introducing fusion frame or frame of subspace is to first construct local components and then build a global frame from these. This type of frame behaves as a generalization of frames. Motivating by the concepts of fusion and weaving frames, we investigate the notion woven-weaving fusion frames and present some of their features. Also, we study some effects of perturbations on woven frames and introduce Riesz decomposition of wovens and then we examine some of behaviors of this type of decomposition.

Abstract:In this paper we will look at the connection of frames and finite dimensionality. A main focus is to present simple algorithms and make them available online. The main result is a way to 'switch' between different frames, giving an algorithm to calculate the coefficients of one frame given the analysis of another frame using their cross-Gram matrix. This is a canonical extension of the basic transformation matrix used for orthonormal bases (ONB) and is therefore called frame transformation. Furthermore we will summarize basic properties of frames in finite dimensional spaces. We will give basic algorithms to use with frames in finite dimensional spaces, useful for basic numerical experiments. Finally we will give a criteria for finite dimensional spaces using frames. On the structures of Grassmannian frames

Abstract:A common criterion in the design of finite Hilbert space frames is minimal coherence, as this leads to error reduction in various signal processing applications. Frames that achieve minimal coherence relative to all unit-norm frames are called Grassmannian frames, a class which includes the well-known equiangular tight frames. However, the notion of "coherence minimization" varies according to the constraints of the ambient optimization problem, so there are other types of "minimally coherent" frames one can speak of. In addition to Grassmannian frames, we consider the class of frames which minimize coherence over the space of frames which are both unit-norm and tight, which we call 1-Grassmannian frames. We observe that these two types of frames coincide in many settings, but not all; accordingly, we investigate some of the differences between the resulting theories. For example, one noteworthy advantage enjoyed by 1-Grassmannian frames is that their optimality properties are preserved under the Naimark complement.

Abstract:This paper undertakes a study of the structure of the fibers of the Chevalley exponentiation maps $f_{(i_1,\dots ,i_d)}$. The fibers of these maps $f_{(i_1,\dots ,i_d)}$ encode the nonnegative real relations amongst exponentiated Chevalley generators. Our main theorems show that the fibers admit cell stratifications, that these cell stratifications have the same face posets as interior dual block complexes of subword complexes, and that these posets are contractible. We conjecture that each such fiber is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to the interior dual block complex of a subword complex. This conjecture is shown to have as a corollary a new proof of the Fomin-Shapiro Conjecture by way of general topological results regarding approximating maps by homeomorphisms.

Abstract:In the early nineties, R. M. Aron, B. Cole, T. W. Gamelin and W. B. Johnson initiated the study of the maximal ideal space (spectrum) of Banach algebras of holomorphic functions defined on the open unit ball of an infinite dimensional complex Banach space. Within this framework, we investigate the fibers and Gleason parts of the spectrum of the algebra of holomorphic and uniformly continuous functions on the unit ball of ( ). We show that the inherent geometry of these spaces provides a fundamental ingredient for our results. We prove that whenever ( ), the fiber of every contains a set of cardinal such that any two elements of this set belong to different Gleason parts. For the case , we complete the known description of the fibers, showing that, for each , the fiber over z is not a singleton. Also, we establish that different fibers over elements in cannot share Gleason parts.

Numerical Functional Analysis and Optimization

Abstract:In last decades, the operator theory of Krein spaces, Krein space approaches, and various generalizations of frames have interested many mathematicians due to their potential applications in mathematics and engineering. This paper addresses the frame theory for Krein spaces. We present some properties of J -orthonormal bases, Parseval frames and frames for Krein spaces, and a parametric expression of all duals of an arbitrarily given frame in Krein spaces. This study shows that the frame theory for Krein spaces is not a direct generalization of the frame theory for Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:Transmitted data may be corrupted by both noise and data loss. Grassmannian frames are in some sense optimal representations of data transmitted over a noisy channel that may lose some of the transmitted coefficients. Fusion frame (or frame of subspaces) theory is a new area that has potential to be applied to problems in such fields as distributed sensing and parallel processing. Grassmannian fusion frames combine elements from both theories. A simple, novel construction of Grassmannian fusion frames with an extension to Grassmannian fusion frames with local frames shall be presented. Some connections to sparse representations shall also be discussed.

Abstract:Naimark complements for Hilbert space Parseval frames are one of the most fundamental and useful results in the field of frame theory. We will show that actually all Hilbert space frames have Naimark complements which possess all the usual properties for Naimark complements with one notable exception. So these complements can be used for equiangular frames, RIP property, fusion frames etc. Along the way, we will correct a mistake in a recent fusion frame paper where chordal distances for Naimark complements are computed incorrectly.

Abstract:Frames have established themselves as a means to derive redundant, yet stable decompositions of a signal for analysis or transmission, while also promoting sparse expansions. However, when the signal dimension is large, the computation of the frame measurements of a signal typically requires a large number of additions and multiplications, and this makes a frame decomposition intractable in applications with limited computing budget. To address this problem, in this paper, we focus on frames in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and introduce sparsity for such frames as a new paradigm. In our terminology, a sparse frame is a frame whose elements have a sparse representation in an orthonormal basis, thereby enabling low-complexity frame decompositions. To introduce a precise meaning of optimality, we take the sum of the numbers of vectors needed from this orthonormal basis when expanding each frame vector as sparsity measure. We then analyze the recently introduced algorithm Spectral Tetris for construction of unit norm tight frames and prove that the tight frames generated by this algorithm are in fact optimally sparse with respect to the standard unit vector basis. Finally, we show that even the generalization of Spectral Tetris for the construction of unit norm frames associated with a given frame operator produces optimally sparse frames.

Abstract:In the past decade, significant progress has been made to generalize classical tools from Fourier analysis to analyze and process signals defined on networks. In this paper, we propose a new framework for constructing Gabor-type frames for signals on graphs. Our approach uses general and flexible families of linear operators acting as translations. Compared to previous work in the literature, our methods yield the sharp bounds for the associated frames, in a broad setting that generalizes several existing constructions. We also examine how Gabor-type frames behave for signals defined on Cayley graphs by exploiting the representation theory of the underlying group. We explore how natural classes of translations can be constructed for Cayley graphs, and how the choice of an eigenbasis can significantly impact the properties of the resulting translation operators and frames on the graph.
