Abstract:We introduce a new approach to study height zeta functions of projective spaces and projective bundles. To study height zeta functions of projective spaces $Z(\mathbb{P}^n, H_{\mathcal{O}(1)}; s)$, we apply the Riemann-Roch theorem of Arakelov vector bundles by van der Geer and Schoof to the integrand of an integral expression of $Z(\mathbb{P}^n, H_{\mathcal{O}(1)}; s)$. We give a proof of the analytic continuation and functional equations of height zeta functions of projective spaces with respect to various height functions. Motivic analogues of these results are also proved. We also study height zeta functions of Hirzebruch surfaces.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the analytic properties of the height Zeta functions of projective spaces and Hirzebruch surfaces. Specifically, the author aims to study the analytic continuation, poles and their residues of these height Zeta functions, and prove the functional equations they satisfy. ### Main problems and objectives 1. **Analytic continuation and poles**: - Study the analytic continuation in the complex plane of the height Zeta functions of the projective space \( P(V) \) and the Hirzebruch surface \( F_e \). - Determine the poles and their residues of these functions in specific regions. 2. **Functional equations**: - Prove the functional equations satisfied by the height Zeta functions on projective spaces and Hirzebruch surfaces. 3. **Motivic analogy**: - Generalize the known results to arbitrary Arakelov vector bundles and study the analytic properties of the motivic height Zeta functions. ### Specific content #### Height Zeta function of projective space For an Arakelov vector bundle \( V \) of rank \( r=n + 1 \), consider its corresponding projective space \( P(V) \). The height Zeta function is defined as: \[ Z(P(V), s)=\sum_{P\in P(V)(F)}H(P)^{-s} \] where \( H(P) \) is the height function defined by the Arakelov line bundle \( O(1) \). The main results include: - \( Z(P(V), s) \) is a holomorphic function on \( \{ s\in\mathbb{C}\mid\Re(s)>r\} \) and can be analytically continued to the entire complex plane to become a meromorphic function. - In the region \( \{ s\in\mathbb{C}\mid\Re(s)>1\} \), \( Z(P(V), s) \) has a unique simple pole at \( s = r \), and its residue is: \[ \text{Res}_{s = r}Z(P(V), s)=\frac{\alpha N(V)}{w|\Delta|^{r/2}\xi(r)} \] - It satisfies the following functional equation: \[ N(V)^{-1/2}|\Delta|^{s/2}\xi(s)Z(P(V), s)=N(V^{\vee})^{-1/2}|\Delta|^{(r - s)/2}\xi(r - s)Z(P(V^{\vee}), r - s) \] #### Height Zeta function of Hirzebruch surface For the Hirzebruch surface \( F_e \), consider the line bundle \( O(a, b) \), and its height Zeta function \( Z(F_e, s) \) has the following pole contributions on \( \{ s\in\mathfty\mid\Re(s)>\max\{1/a,(e + 2)/b\}\} \): - There is a pole at \( s = 2/a \), and its residue is: \[ \frac{\alpha Z(P^1,2b/a - e)}{w|\Delta|\xi(2)} \] - If \( s = 2/(b - ea) \) is in the above region, then there is another pole, and its residue is: \[ \frac{\alpha N(V)}{w|\Delta|\xi(2)} \] #### Motivic height Zeta function For the projective bundle \( X\to C \), similar results have also been obtained for the study of the motivic height Zeta function \( Z_{\text{mot}}(X, h_L; t) \), especially in terms of the rationality of \( \zeta(t)Z_{\text{mot}}(P(V), t) \) and its functional equation. Through these studies, the author not only generalizes the existing classical results but also provides new methods to deal with more general cases.
