Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:Inspired by the properties of an $n$-frame of gradients $(\nabla f_1, \ldots, \nabla f_n)$ of a Morin map $f:M\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^n$, with $\dim M\geq n$, we introduce the notion of Morin singularities in the context of singular $n$-coframes and singular $n$-frames. We also study the singularities of generic 1-forms associated to a Morin $n$-coframe, in order to generalize a result of T. Fukuda [4, Theorem 1], which establishes a modulo 2 congruence between the Euler characteristic of a compact manifold $M$ and the Euler characteristics of the singular sets of a Morin map defined on $M$, to the case of Morin $n$-coframes and Morin $n$-frames.

Abstract:We consider the operator $F(u) = u' + f(t,u(t))$ acting on periodic real valued functions. Generically, critical points of $F$ are infinite dimensional Morin-like singularities and we provide operational characterizations of the singularities of different orders. A global Lyapunov-Schmidt decomposition of $F$ converts $F$ into adapted coordinates, $\Fbd(\tilde v, \overline u) = (\tilde v, \overline v)$, where $\tilde v$ is a function of average zero and both $\overline u$ and $\overline v$ are numbers. Thus, global geometric aspects of $F$ reduce to the study of a family of one-dimensional maps: we use this approach to obtain normal forms for several nonlinearities $f$. For example, we characterize autonomous nonlinearities giving rise to global folds and, in general, we show that $F$ is a global fold if all critical points are folds. Also, $f(t,x) = x^3 - x$, or, more generally, the Cafagna-Donati nonlinearity, yield global cusps; for $F$ interpreted as a map between appropriate Hilbert spaces, the requested changes of variable to bring $F$ to normal form can be taken to be diffeomorphisms. A key ingredient in the argument is the contractibility of both the critical set and the set of non-folds for a generic autonomous nonlinearity. We also obtain a numerical example of a polynomial $f$ of degree 4 for which $F$ contains butterflies (Morin singularities of order 4)---% it then follows that $F(u) = v$ has six solutions for some $v$.

Abstract:In [2], <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://N.Dutertre" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and T. Fukui used Viro's integral calculus to study the topology of stable maps $f:M\rightarrow N$ between two smooth manifolds $M$ and $N$. They also discussed several applications to Morin maps. In particular, in Theorem 6.2 [2], they show an equality relating the Euler characteristic of a compact manifold $M$ and the Euler characteristic of the singular sets of a Morin map defined on $M$. In this paper we show how Morse theory for manifolds with boundary can be applied to the study of the singular sets of a Morin map in order to obtain a new proof of Dutertre-Fukui's Theorem when $N=\mathbb{R}^n$.

Abstract:This work presents a range of triangulated characterizations for important classes of singularities such as derived splinters, rational singularities, and Du Bois singularities. An invariant called 'level' in a triangulated category can be used to measure the failure of a variety to have a prescribed singularity type. We provide explicit computations of this invariant for reduced Nagata schemes of Krull dimension one and for affine cones over smooth projective hypersurfaces. Furthermore, these computations are utilized to produce upper bounds for Rouquier dimension on the respective bounded derived categories.

Singularities of generalized timelike minimal surfaces in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space

Abstract:A timelike minimal surface in Minkowski 3-space is a surface whose induced metric is Lorentzian and with vanishing mean curvature. Such surfaces have many kinds of singularities. In this paper, we prove existence and non-existence theorems of singularities of timelike minimal surfaces, and show that various diffeomorphism types of singularities that do not appear on these Riemannian counter parts, such as minimal surfaces in Euclidean space and maximal surfaces in Minkowski space, appear on timelike minimal surfaces. We also give criteria for cuspidal butterfly, cuspidal $S_1$ singularity, $(2,5)$-cuspidal edge, cuspidal beaks and $D_4$ singularity of timelike minimal surfaces. Finally, duality and invariance theorems for these singularities and examples are given.

Abstract:We introduce a categorical analogue of Saito’s notion of primitive forms. For the category $\textsf{MF}(\frac{1}{n+1}x^{n+1})$ of matrix factorizations of $\frac{1}{n+1}x^{n+1}$, we prove that there exists a unique, up to non-zero constant, categorical primitive form. The corresponding genus zero categorical Gromov–Witten invariants of $\textsf{MF}(\frac{1}{n+1}x^{n+1})$ are shown to match with the invariants defined through unfolding of singularities of $\frac{1}{n+1}x^{n+1}$.

A new conjecture about the non-existence of negative weight derivations of the new k-th singular locus moduli algebras for weighted homogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities is proposed. Abstract:We study singularities of Gauss maps of fronts and give characterizations of types of singularities of Gauss maps by geometric properties of fronts which are related to behavior of bounded principal curvatures. Moreover, we investigate relation between a kind of boundedness of Gaussian curvatures near cuspidal edges and types of singularities of Gauss maps of cuspidal edges. Abstract:We study germs of analytic maps $f:(X,S)\rightarrow(\mathbb{C}^p,0)$, when $X$ is an ICIS of dimension $n<p$. We define an image Milnor number, generalizing Mond's definition, $\mu_I(X,f)$ and give results known for the smooth case such as the conservation of this quantity by deformations. We also use this to characterise the Whitney equisingularity of families of corank one map germs $f_t\colon(\mathbb{C}^n,S)\to(\mathbb{C}^{n+1},0)$ with isolated instabilities in terms of the constancy of the $\mu_I^*$-sequences of $f_t$ and the projections $\pi\colon D^2(f_t)\to\mathbb{C}^n$, where $D^2(f_t)$ is the ICIS given by double point space of $f_t$ in $\mathbb{C}^n\times\mathbb{C}^n$. The $\mu_I^*$-sequence of a map germ consist of the image Milnor number of the map germ and all its successive transverse slices.

Abstract:Stable equivalences of Morita type preserve many interesting properties and are proved to be the appropriate concept for studying equivalences between stable categories. Recently the singularity category attained much attraction and Xiao-Wu Chen and Long-Gang Sun gave an appropriate definition of singular equivalence of Morita type. We shall show that under some conditions singular equivalences of Morita type have some biadjoint functor properties and preserve positive degree Hochschild homology.

Abstract:We study the singularities of holomorphic maps of C-2 tangent to the identity. We will adapt the method of Hironaka for the resolution of singularities of algebraic varieties to our study. In particular, we introduce a new numerical invariant associated to such maps at the singularities, called "adapted order", which behaves well under blow-ups. Though other methods for desingularizing such maps exist, our approach has the advantage that it has no essential obstruction for generalizing to higher dimensions.

Abstract:A (compact) manifold with fibered $P$-singularities is a (possibly) singular pseudomanifold $M_\Sigma$ with two strata: an open nonsingular stratum $\mathring M$ (a smooth open manifold) and a closed stratum $\beta M$ (a closed manifold of positive codimension), such that a tubular neighborhood of $\beta M$ is a fiber bundle with fibers each looking like the cone on a fixed closed manifold $P$. We discuss what it means for such an $M_{\Sigma}$ with fibered $P$-singularities to admit an appropriate Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature, and we give necessary and sufficient conditions (the necessary conditions based on suitable versions of index theory, the sufficient conditions based on surgery methods and homotopy theory) for this to happen when the singularity type $P$ is either $\mathbb Z/k$ or $S^1$, and $M$ and the boundary of the tubular neighborhood of the singular stratum are simply connected and carry spin structures. Along the way, we prove some results of perhaps independent interest, concerning metrics on spin$^c$ manifolds with positive "twisted scalar curvature," where the twisting comes from the curvature of the spin$^c$ line bundle.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize some results by Siersma, Pellikaan, and de Jong regarding morsifications of singular hypersurfaces whose singular locus is a smooth curve, and present some applications to the study of Yomdin-type isolated singularities. In order to prove these results, we discuss the transversal discriminant of such singularities and how it relates to other algebraic and topological invariants.

On the Gauss-Manin Connection and Real Singularities

Abstract:We prove that to each real singularity $f: (\mathbb{R}^{n+1}, 0) \to (\mathbb{R}, 0)$ one can associate two systems of differential equations $\mathfrak{g}^{k\pm}_f$ which are pushforwards in the category of $\mathcal{D}$-modules over $\mathbb{R}^{\pm}$, of the sheaf of real analytic functions on the total space of the positive, respectively negative, Milnor fibration. We prove that for $k=0$ if $f$ is an isolated singularity then $\mathfrak{g}^{\pm}$ determines the the $n$-th homology groups of the positive, respectively negative, Milnor fibre. We then calculate $\mathfrak{g}^{+}$ for ordinary quadratic singularities and prove that under certain conditions on the choice of morsification, one recovers the top homology groups of the Milnor fibers of any isolated singularity $f$. As an application we construct a public-key encryption scheme based on morsification of singularities.

Abstract:Let $(X,B)$ be a log Calabi--Yau pair of dimension $n$, index one, and birational complexity $c$. We show that $(X,B)$ has a crepant birational model that admits a tower of Mori fiber spaces of which at least $n-c$ are conic fibrations. Motivated by the proof of the previous statement, we introduce new measures of the complexity of a log Calabi--Yau pair; the alteration complexity and the conic complexity. We characterize when these invariants are zero. Finally, we give applications of the tools of the main theorem to birational superrigidity, Fano hypersurfaces, dual complexes, Weil indices of Fano varieties, and klt singularities.

Abstract:Let $Crit M$ denote the minimal number of critical points (not necessarily non-degenerate) on a closed smooth manifold $M$. We are interested in the evaluation of $Crit$. It is worth noting that we do not know yet whether $Crit M$ is a homotopy invariant of $M$. This makes the research of $Crit$ a challenging problem. In particular, we pose the following question: given a map $f: M \to N$ of degree 1 of closed manifolds, is it true that $Crit M \geq Crit N$? We prove that this holds in dimension 3 or less. Some high dimension examples are considered. Note also that an affirmative answer to the question implies the homotopy invariance of $Crit$; this simple observation is a good motivation for the research.
