Abstract:Let λ and μ be sequence spaces and have both the signed-weak gliding hump property, (λ, μ) the algebra of the infinite matrix operators which transform λ into μ. In this paper, it is proved that if λ and μ are β-spaces and λ β and μ β have also the signed-weak gliding hump property, then for any polar topology τ, ((λ, μ), τ) is always sequentially complete locally convex topological algebra.

Abstract:If $A$ is a $\sigma$-unital $C^*$-algebra and $a$ is a strictly positive element of $A$ then for every compact subset $K$ of the complete regularization $\mathrm{Glimm}(A)$ of $\mathrm{Prim}(A)$ there exists $\alpha > 0$ such that $K\subset \{G\in \mathrm{Glimm}(A) \mid \|a + G\|\geq \alpha\}$. This extends a 1974 result of J. Dauns to all $\sigma$-unital $C^*$-algebras. However, there is a $C^*$-algebra $A$ and a compact subset of $\mathrm{Glimm}(A)$ that is not contained in any set of the form $\{G\in \mathrm{Glimm}(A) \mid \|a + G\|\geq \alpha\}$, $a\in A$ and $\alpha > 0$.

Abstract:It is proved that for every compact metric space $K$ there exists a Banach space $X$ whose Calkin algebra $\mathcal{L}(X)/\mathcal{K}(X)$ is homomorphically isometric to $C(K)$. This is achieved by appropriately modifying the Bourgain-Delbaen $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space of Argyros and Haydon in such a manner that sufficiently many diagonal operators on this space are bounded.

Abstract:In this article, we identify a suitable approach to define the character space of a commutative unital locally $C^{\ast}$-algebra via the notion of the inductive limit of topological spaces. Also, we discuss topological properties of the character space. We establish the Gelfand type representation between a commutative unital locally $C^{\ast}$-algebra and the space of all continuous functions defined on its character space. Equivalently, we prove that every commutative unital locally $C^{\ast}$-algebra is identified with the locally $C^{\ast}$-algebra of continuous functions on its character space through the coherent representation of projective limit of $C^{\ast}$-algebras. Finally, we construct a unital locally $C^{\ast}$-algebra generated by a given locally bounded normal operator and show that its character space is homeomorphic to the local spectrum. Further, we define the functional calculus and prove spectral mapping theorem in this framework.

A note on nonseparable Lipschitz-free spaces

Abstract:We prove that several classical Banach space properties are equivalent to separability for the class of Lipschitz-free spaces, including Corson's property ($\mathcal{C}$), Talponen's Countable Separation Property, or being a Gâteaux differentiability space. On the other hand, we single out more general properties where this equivalence fails. In particular, the question whether the duals of non-separable Lipschitz-free spaces have a weak$^*$ sequentially compact ball is undecidable in ZFC. Finally, we provide an example of a nonseparable dual Lipschitz-free space that fails the Radon-Nikodým property.

Abstract:We determine the primitive ideal space and hence the ideal lattice of a large class of separable groupoid C*-algebras that includes all 2-graph C*-algebras. A key ingredient is the notion of harmonious families of bisections in etale groupoids associated to finite families of commuting local homeomorphisms. Our results unify and recover all known results on ideal structure for crossed products of commutative C*-algebras by free abelian groups, for graph C*-algebras, and for Katsura's topological graph C*-algebras.

Separable algebras and coflasque resolutions

Abstract:Over a non-closed field, it is a common strategy to use separable algebras as invariants to distinguish algebraic and geometric objects. The most famous example is the deep connection between Severi-Brauer varieties and central simple algebras. For more general varieties, one might use endomorphism algebras of line bundles, of indecomposable vector bundles, or of exceptional objects in their derived categories. Using Galois cohomology, we describe a new invariant of reductive algebraic groups that captures precisely when this strategy will fail. Our main result characterizes this invariant in terms of coflasque resolutions of linear algebraic groups introduced by Colliot-Thélène. We determine whether or not this invariant is trivial for many fields. For number fields, we show it agrees with the Tate-Shafarevich group of the linear algebraic group, up to behavior at real places.

The primitive spectrum of C*-algebras of etale groupoids with abelian isotropy

Abstract:Given a Hausdorff locally compact étale groupoid $\mathcal G$, we describe as a topological space the part of the primitive spectrum of $C^*(\mathcal G)$ obtained by inducing one-dimensional representations of amenable isotropy groups of $\mathcal G$. When $\mathcal G$ is amenable, second countable, with abelian isotropy groups, our result gives the description of $\operatorname{Prim} C^*(\mathcal G)$ conjectured by van Wyk and Williams. This, in principle, completely determines the ideal structure of a large class of separable C$^*$-algebras, including the transformation group C$^*$-algebras defined by amenable actions of discrete groups with abelian stabilizers and the C$^*$-algebras of higher rank graphs.

Abstract:S. Carpi et al. (Comm. Math. Phys., 402 (2023), 169–212) proved that every connected (i.e., haploid) Frobenius algebra in a tensor C$ ^* $-category is unitarizable (i.e., isomorphic to a special C$ ^* $-Frobenius algebra). Building on this result, we extend it to the non-connected case by showing that an algebra in a multitensor C$ ^* $-category is unitarizable if and only if it is separable.

Abstract:General theory determines the notion of separable MV-algebra (equivalently, of separable unital lattice-ordered Abelian group). We establish the following structure theorem: An MV-algebra is separable if, and only if, it is a finite product of algebras of rational numbers, i.e., of subalgebras of the MV-algebra $[0,1]\cap\mathbb{Q}$. Beyond its intrinsic algebraic interest, this research is motivated by the long-term programme of developing the algebraic geometry of the opposite of the categroy of MV-algebras, in analogy with the classical case of commutative $K$-algebras over a field $K$.

Abstract:We analyze the sequence obtained by consecutive applications of the Cantor-Bendixson derivative for a noncommutative scattered $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$, using the ideal $\mathcal I^{At}(\mathcal A)$ generated by the minimal projections of $\mathcal A$. With its help, we present some fundamental results concerning scattered $C^*$-algebras, in a manner parallel to the commutative case of scattered compact or locally compact Hausdorff spaces and superatomic Boolean algebras. It also allows us to formulate problems which have motivated the "cardinal sequences" programme in the classical topology, in the noncommutative context. This leads to some new constructions of noncommutative scattered $C^*$-algebras and new open problems. In particular, we construct a type $I$ $C^*$-algebra which is the inductive limit of stable ideals $\mathcal A_\alpha$, along an uncountable limit ordinal $\lambda$, such that $\mathcal A_{\alpha+1}/\mathcal A_\alpha$ is $*$-isomorphic to the algebra of all compact operators on a separable Hilbert space and $\mathcal A_{\alpha+1}$ is $\sigma$-unital and stable for each $\alpha<\lambda$, but $\mathcal A$ is not stable and where all ideals of $\mathcal A$ are of the form $\mathcal A_\alpha$. In particular, $\mathcal A$ is a nonseparable $C^*$-algebra with no ideal which is maximal among the stable ideals. This answers a question of M. R\ordam in the nonseparable case. All the above $C^*$-algebras $A_\alpha$s and $A$ satisfy the following version of the definition of an AF algebra: any finite subset can be approximated from a finite-dimensional subalgebra. Two more complex constructions based on the language developed in this paper are presented in separate papers.

Abstract:Abstract We prove the existence of a separable approximately ultra-homogeneous Banach lattice $\mathfrak {B}\mathfrak {L}$ that is isometrically universal for separable Banach lattices. This is done by showing that that the class of finitely generated Banach lattices has the Amalgamation Property and thus form a metric Fraïssé class. Some additional results about the structural properties of $\mathfrak { BL}$ are also proven.

Abstract:We introduce and study the weak Glimm property for -algebras, and also a property we shall call (HS ). We show that the properties of being nowhere scattered and residual (HS ) are equivalent for any -algebra. Also, for a -algebra with the weak Glimm property, the properties of being purely infinite and weakly purely infinite are equivalent. It follows that for a -algebra with the weak Glimm property such that the absolute value of every nonzero, square-zero, element is properly infinite, the properties of being (weakly, locally) purely infinite, nowhere scattered, residual (HS ), residual (HS ), and residual (HI) are all equivalent, and are equivalent to the global Glimm property. This gives a partial affirmative answer to the global Glimm problem, as well as certain open questions raised by Kirchberg and Rørdam.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ and a commutative ring $G$-spectrum $R$, we study the separable commutative algebras in the category of compact $R$-modules. We isolate three conditions on the geometric fixed points of $R$ which ensure that every separable commutative algebra is standard, i.e. arises from a finite $G$-set. In particular we show that all separable commutative algebras in the categories of compact objects in $G$-spectra and in derived $G$-Mackey functors are standard provided that $G$ is a $p$-group. In these categories we also show that for a general finite group $G$, we cannot expect all separable commutative algebras to be standard.

Exotic C*-algebras of geometric groups

Abstract:We consider a new class of potentially exotic group C*-algebras $C^*_{PF_p^*}(G)$ for a locally compact group $G$, and its connection with the class of potentially exotic group C*-algebras $C^*_{L^p}(G)$ introduced by Brown and Guentner. Surprisingly, these two classes of C*-algebras are intimately related. By exploiting this connection, we show $C^*_{L^p}(G)=C^*_{PF_p^*}(G)$ for $p\in (2,\infty)$, and the C*-algebras $C^*_{L^p}(G)$ are pairwise distinct for $p\in (2,\infty)$ when $G$ belongs to a large class of nonamenable groups possessing the Haagerup property and either the rapid decay property or Kunze-Stein phenomenon by characterizing the positive definite functions that extend to positive linear functionals of $C^*_{L^p}(G)$ and $C^*_{PF_p^*}(G)$. This greatly generalizes earlier results of Okayasu and the second author on the pairwise distinctness of $C^*_{L^p}(G)$ for $2<p<\infty$ when $G$ is either a noncommutative free group or the group $SL(2,\mathbb R)$, respectively. As a byproduct of our techniques, we present two applications to the theory of unitary representations of a locally compact group $G$. Firstly, we give a short proof of the well-known Cowling-Haagerup-Howe Theorem which presents sufficient condition implying the weak containment of a cyclic unitary representation of $G$ in the left regular representation of $G$. Also we give a near solution to a 1978 conjecture of Cowling. This conjecture of Cowling states if $G$ is a Kunze-Stein group and $\pi$ is a unitary representation of $G$ with cyclic vector $\xi$ such that the map $$G\ni s\mapsto \langle \pi(s)\xi,\xi\rangle$$ belongs to $L^p(G)$ for some $2< p <\infty$, then $A_\pi\subseteq L^p(G)$. We show $B_\pi\subseteq L^{p+\epsilon}(G)$ for every $\epsilon>0$ (recall $A_\pi\subseteq B_\pi$).

Abstract:Recent developments in Banach space theory provided unexpected examples of unital Banach algebras that are isomorphic to Calkin algebras of Banach spaces, however no example of a unital Banach algebra that cannot be realised as a~Calkin algebra has been found so far. This naturally led to the question of possible limitations of such assignments. In the present note we provide examples of unital Banach algebras meeting the necessary density condition for being the Calkin algebra of a separable Banach space that are not isomorphic to Calkin algebras of such spaces, nonetheless. The examples may be found of the form $C(X)$ for a compact space $X$, $\ell_1(G)$ for some torsion-free Abelian group, and a~simple, unital AF $C^*$-algebra. Extensions to higher densities are also presented.

Abstract:Using Godement mean on the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a locally compact quantum group we obtain strong separation results for quantum positive-definite functions associated to a subclass of representations, strengthening for example the known relationship between amenability of a discrete quantum group and existence of a net of finitely supported quantum positive-definite functions converging pointwise to $I$. We apply these results to show that von Neumann algebras of unimodular discrete quantum groups enjoy a strong form of non-$w^*$-CPAP, which we call the matrix $\epsilon$-separation property.
