Abstract:We show that a previously reported discrepancy between simulations of superconducting Josephson junction arrays and the theoretical analysis of Ambegaokar, Halperin, Nelson, and Siggia (AHNS) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 40, 783 (1978)] is rooted in a peculiar finite-size effect under periodic boundary conditions. Our simulation results for the largest array support the power-law I-V curves predicted by AHNS. Analysis of the vortex dynamics reveals two intrinsic length scales set by the applied current, which define three size regimes with distinctive I-V characteristics.

Abstract:Recent experimental efforts to identify the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions in the anomalous Hall effect are reviewed. Benefited from the experimental control of artificial impurity density in single crystalline magnetic thin films, a comprehensive physical picture of the anomalous Hall effect involving multiple competing scattering processes has been established. Some new insights into the microscopic mechanisms of the anomalous Hall effect are discussed.

Abstract:Under a strong magnetic field, the quantum Hall (QH) effect can be observed in two-dimensional electronic gas systems. If the quantized Hall conductivity is acquired in a system without the need of an external magnetic field, then it will give rise to a new quantum state, the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state. The QAH state is a novel quantum state that is insulating in the bulk but exhibits unique conducting edge states topologically protected from backscattering and holds great potential for applications in low-power-consumption electronics. The realization of the QAH effect in real materials is of great significance. In this paper, we systematically review the theoretical proposals that have been brought forward to realize the QAH effect in various real material systems or structures, including magnetically doped topological insulators, graphene-based systems, silicene-based systems, two-dimensional organometallic frameworks, quantum wells, and functionalized Sb(111) monolayers, etc. Our paper can help our readers to quickly grasp the recent developments in this field.

Abstract:The ordinary and quantum Hall effects with fixed carrier types, electron or hole, exhibit well-defined chirality under external magnetic fields, but the analogous chirality of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) remains little explored. Here, for the electronic structures of intrinsic QAHE systems, we show that the local Berry curvature is linked with the angular-momentum difference l delta z of the inverted bands. In the presence of rotation symmetries, the value of l delta z will be quantized and set as the Chern number. The quantized l delta z will also give rise to a unique quantized magnetic circular dichroism effect in the case of resonance absorption. By l delta z, we find that the chiral flow-direction of an electron in the QAHE is not explicitly related to the intrinsic spin axis, thereby enabling the spin-momentum-unlocking edge states in an antiferromagnetic QAHE system. The validity of our theory is confirmed through rigorous examinations using perturbation theory, k p modeling, tight-binding modeling, and first-principle calculations, which predicts exotic behavior in experimentally accessible quantum materials.

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of observing the anomalous Hall effect in paramagnetic two-dimensional systems. We apply the semiclassical equations of motion to carriers in the conduction and valence bands of wurtzite and zinc-blende quantum wells in the exchange field generated by magnetic impurities and we calculate the anomalous Hall conductivity based on the Berry phase corrections to the carrier velocity. We show that under certain circumstances, this conductivity approaches one-half of the conductance quantum. We consider the effect of an external magnetic field and show that for a small enough field the theory is unaltered.

Abstract:The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) is a quantized Hall effect that occurs at zero magnetic field. Its mechanism and properties are different from those of conventional quantum Hall effects (QHEs) induced by magnetic field. The first theory of a QHE without amagnetic field was proposed in 1988. Yet, it has taken 25 years to be experimentally realized, which has now happened thanks to the development of the topological insulator-a conceptually new topological state of matter. Here, we review QAHE, beginning with the original theoretical idea and concluding with its final implementation using experimentally accessible materials. The current status and future direction of the field are also discussed.

Abstract:The intriguing interplay between topology and superconductivity has attracted significant attention, given its potential for realizing topological superconductivity. In the quantum anomalous Hall insulators (QAHIs)-based junction, the supercurrents are carried by the chiral edge states, characterized by a 2Φ0 magnetic flux periodicity (Φ0=h/2e is the flux quantum, h the Planck constant, and e the electron charge). However, experimental observations indicate the presence of bulk carriers in QAHI samples due to magnetic dopants. In this study, we reveal a systematic transition from edge-state to bulk-state dominant supercurrents as the chemical potential varies from the bulk gap to the conduction band. This results in an evolution from a 2Φ0-periodic oscillation pattern to an asymmetric Fraunhofer pattern. Furthermore, a Fraunhoher-like pattern emerges due to the coexistence of chiral edge states and bulk states caused by magnetic domains, even when the chemical potential resides within the gap. These findings not only advance the theoretical understanding but also pave the way for the experimental discovery of the chiral Josephson effect based on QAHI doped with magnetic impurities. Abstract:Abstract The classical and quantum Hall effects are important subjects in condensed matter physics. The emergent 3D quantum Hall effects and nonlinear Hall effect have attracted considerable interest recently, with the former elevating the quantum Hall effect to a higher dimension and the latter extending the Hall effect to higher-order responses. In this perspective, we briefly introduce these two new members of the Hall family and discuss the open questions and future research directions.

Abstract:The nonlinear Hall effect is an unconventional response, in which a voltage can be driven by two perpendicular currents in the Hall-bar measurement. Unprecedented in the family of the Hall effects, it can survive time-reversal symmetry but is sensitive to the breaking of discrete and crystal symmetries. It is a quantum transport phenomenon that has deep connection with the Berry curvature. However, a full quantum description is still absent. Here we construct a quantum theory of the nonlinear Hall effect by using the diagrammatic technique. Quite different from nonlinear optics, nearly all the diagrams account for the disorder effects, which play decisive role in the electronic transport. After including the disorder contributions in terms of the Feynman diagrams, the total nonlinear Hall conductivity is enhanced but its sign remains unchanged for the 2D tilted Dirac model, compared to the one with only the Berry curvature contribution. We discuss the symmetry of the nonlinear conductivity tensor and predict a pure disorder-induced nonlinear Hall effect for point groups C 3 , C 3 h , C 3 v , D 3 h , D 3 in 2D, and T , T d , C 3 h , D 3 h in 3D. This work will be helpful for explorations of the topological physics beyond the linear regime.
Abelian and Non-Abelian Anyons in Integer Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect and Topological Phase Transitions Via Superconducting Proximity Effect

Abstract:We study the quantum anomalous Hall effect described by a class of two-component Haldane models on square lattices. We show that the latter can be transformed into a pseudospin triplet p + ip-wave paired superfluid. In the long wavelength limit, the ground-statewave function is described by Halperin's ( 1,1,-1) state of neutral fermions analogous to the double-layer quantum Hall effect. The vortex excitations are charge e/2 Abelian anyons which carry a neutral Dirac fermion zero mode. The superconducting proximity effect induces "tunneling" between "layers" which leads to topological phase transitions whereby the Dirac fermion zero mode fractionalizes and Majorana fermions emerge in the edge states. The charge e/2 vortex excitation carrying a Majorana zero mode is a non-Abelian anyon. The proximity effect can also drive a conventional insulator into a quantum anomalous Hall effect state with a Majorana edge mode and the non-Abelian vortex excitations.
Unification of Nonlinear Anomalous Hall Effect and Nonreciprocal Magnetoresistance in Metals by the Quantum Geometry

Abstract:The quantum geometry has significant consequences in determining transport and optical properties in quantum materials. Here, we use a semiclassical formalism coupled with perturbative corrections unifying the nonlinear anomalous Hall effect and nonreciprocal magnetoresistance (longitudinal resistance) from the quantum geometry. In the dc limit, both transverse and longitudinal nonlinear conductivities include a term due to the normalized quantum metric dipole. The quantum metric contribution is intrinsic and does not scale with the quasiparticle lifetime. We demonstrate the coexistence of a nonlinear anomalous Hall effect and nonreciprocal magnetoresistance in films of the doped antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 . Our work indicates that both longitudinal and transverse nonlinear transport provide a sensitive probe of the quantum geometry in solids. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.026301 © 2024 American Physical Society

Anomalous Hall effect from a non-Hermitian viewpoint

Abstract:Non-Hermitian descriptions often model open or driven systems away from the equilibrium. Nonetheless, in equilibrium electronic systems, a non-Hermitian nature of an effective Hamiltonian manifests itself as unconventional observables such as a bulk Fermi arc and skin effects. We theoretically reveal that spin-dependent quasiparticle lifetimes, which signify the non-Hermiticity of an effective model in the equilibrium, induce the anomalous Hall effect, namely the Hall effect without an external magnetic field. We first examine the effect of nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities and obtain a non-Hermitian effective model. Then, we calculate the Kubo formula from the microscopic model to ascertain a non-Hermitian interpretation of the longitudinal and Hall conductivities. Our results elucidate the vital role of the non-Hermitian equilibrium nature in the quantum transport phenomena.

Abstract:The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), the last member of Hall family, was predicted to exhibit quantized Hall conductivity e2/h without any external magnetic field. The QAHE shares a similar physical phenomenon with the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE), whereas its physical origin relies on the intrinsic topological inverted band structure and ferromagnetism. Since the QAHE does not require external energy input in the form of magnetic field, it is believed that this effect has unique potential for applications in future electronic devices with low-power consumption. More recently, the QAHE has been experimentally observed in thin films of the time-reversal symmetry breaking ferromagnetic (FM) topological insulators (TI), Cr- and V- doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3. In this Topical Review, we review the history of TI based QAHE, the route to the experimental observation of the QAHE in the above two systems, the current status of the research of the QAHE, and finally the prospects for future studies.

Anomalous Hall Effect in Semiconductor Quantum Wells in Proximity to Chiral P-Wave Superconductors

Abstract:By using the gauge-invariant optical Bloch equation, we perform a microscopic kinetic investigation on the anomalous Hall effect in chiral p-wave superconducting states. Specifically, the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity in the absence of the magnetic field is zero as a consequence of Galilean invariance in our description. As for the extrinsic channel, a finite anomalous Hall current is obtained from the impurity scattering with the optically excited normal quasiparticle current even at zero temperature. From our kinetic description, it can be clearly seen that the excited normal quasiparticle current is due to an induced center-of-mass momentum of Cooper pairs through the acceleration driven by ac electric field. For the induced anomalous Hall current, we show that the conventional skew-scattering channel in the linear response makes the dominant contribution in the strong impurity interaction. In this case, our kinetic description as a supplementary viewpoint mostly confirms the results of Kubo formalism in the literature. Nevertheless, in the weak impurity interaction, this skew-scattering channel becomes marginal and we reveal that a novel induction channel from the Born contribution dominates the anomalous Hall current. This novel channel, which has long been overlooked in the literature, is due to the particle-hole asymmetry by nonlinear optical excitation. Finally, we study the case in the chiral p-wave superconducting state with a transverse conical magnetization, which breaks the Galilean invariance. In this situation, the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity is no longer zero. Comparison of this intrinsic channel with the extrinsic one from impurity scattering is addressed.

Three-Dimensional Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Amorphous Metals

Abstract:Weyl semimetals have been theoretically predicted to become topological metals with anomalous Hall conductivity in amorphous systems. However, measuring the anomalous Hall conductivity in realistic materials, particularly those with multiple pairs of Weyl points, is a significant challenge. If a system respects time-reversal symmetry, then the anomalous Hall conductivity even vanishes. As such, it remains an open question how to probe the Weyl band like topology in amorphous materials. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that, under magnetic fields, a topological metal slab in amorphous systems exhibits three-dimensional quantum Hall effect, even in time-reversal invariant systems, thereby providing a feasible approach to exploring Weyl band like topology in amorphous materials. We unveil the topological origin of the quantized Hall conductance by calculating the Bott index. The index is carried by broadened Landau levels with bulk states spatially localized except at critical transition energies. The topological property also results in edge states localized at distinct hinges on two opposite surfaces.

Abstract:We present a theory of the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic (III, Mn)V semiconductors. Our theory relates the anomalous Hall conductance of a homogeneous ferromagnet to the Berry phase acquired by a quasiparticle wave function upon traversing closed paths on the spin-split Fermi surface. The quantitative agreement between our theory and experimental data in both (In, Mn)As and (Ga, Mn)As systems suggests that this disorder independent contribution to the anomalous Hall conductivity dominates in diluted magnetic semiconductors. The success of this model for (III, Mn)V materials is unprecedented in the longstanding effort to understand origins of the anomalous Hall effect in itinerant ferromagnets.
