Abstract:Most vibro-impact oscillators in engineering applications appear to include nonlinear stiffness or damping, but little attention has been paid to this kind of oscillator. Thus, in present paper, a physical model for an undamped and periodically forced Duffing oscillator with a constraint which leads to motions impacts was analyzed. Computational method was used to solve the nonlinear governing equations. Rich dynamical behaviors including periodic motion, chaotic motion, chattering and grazing were observed in this simple system. Influence of non-dimensional system parameters including the nonlinear stiffness coefficient beta, the forced frequency Omega, the clearance Delta on motion character of the system were also discussed through corresponding bifurcation diagrams. It is supposed that: (a) chattering appears when Delta less than certain threshold. (b) chaotic motion arises when beta larger than certain threshold. (c) grazing bifurcation occurs when r larger than certain threshold.

Abstract:This study focuses on extending the concept of weak signal enhancement from dynamical systems based on vibrational resonance of nonlinear systems, to non-smooth systems. A Van der Pol- Duffing oscillator with a one-sided barrier, subjected to harmonic excitations, has been considered an archetypical low-order model, whose response is weak. It is shown that the system response can be significantly enhanced by applying an additional harmonic excitation but with much higher frequencies. The reasons for the underlying physics are investigated analytically using multiple-scale analysis and the Blekham perturbation approach (direct partition motion). The analytical predictions are qualitatively validated using numerical simulations. This approach yields valuable insights into the intricate interplay between fast and slow excitations in non-smooth systems.

Abstract:Hybrid vibro-impact (HVI) oscillations is a strongly nonlinear dynamical regime that involves both linear oscillations and collisions under periodic, impulsive, or stochastic excitation. This regime arises in various engineering systems, such as mechanical components under tight rigid constraints, seismic-induced sloshing in partially-filled liquid storage tanks, and more. The adaptive nonlinearity of the HVI oscillator is used by the HVI-nonlinear energy sink as an effective vibration mitigation solution for broad energy and frequency range. Due to the extreme nonlinearity of this regime, traditional analytical methods are inapplicable for the description of its transient dynamics. In the current work, we model the HVI oscillator by a forced particle in a truncated quadratic potential well with infinite depth. The slow flow dynamics of the system in the vicinity of primary resonance is described by canonical transformation to action-angle (AA) variables and the corresponding reduced resonance manifold (RM). Two types of bifurcation are examined. The former is associated with the transition between linear oscillations and the HVI-regime and vice versa, and the latter with reaching a chosen maximal transient energy level. The transition boundaries and frequency response curves are obtained analytically. Two underlying dynamical mechanisms that govern the occurrence of bifurcations are identified: the "maximum" and the "saddle" mechanisms. The latter, a potentially more dangerous scenario, involves abrupt transitions of the system's energy response from a relatively small value to the threshold energy level. Both mechanisms are universal for systems that undergo escape from a potential well. All theoretical results are in complete agreement with full-scale numerical simulations.

Exact and approximate stationary responses of multi-degree-of-freedom vibro-impact systems subject to white noise excitations

Abstract:A multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) vibro-impact system subject to white noise excitations is formulated as a stochastically excited and dissipated Hamiltonian system. The constraints are modeled as a nonlinear spring according to the Hertz contact law. The exact stationary solution of the system is derived under certain conditions. The approximate stationary solution of the system is also obtained by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-non-integrable Hamiltonian systems. It is shown that the stationary solution obtained by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-nonintegrable Hamiltonian systems can be the exact stationary solution of the system in special case. An example of stochastically excited two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) vibro-impact system is given to illustrate the application of the procedure in detail.

Abstract:The main objective of the present work is to find an approximate analytical solution for the nonlinear differential equation of the vibro-impact oscillator under the influence of the electromagnetic actuation near the primary resonance. The trigger of vibro-impact regime is due to Hertzian contact. The optimal auxiliary functions method (OAFM) is utilized to give an analytical approximate solution of the problem. The influences of static normal load and electromagnetic actuation near the primary resonance are completely studied. The main novelties of the proposed procedure are the presence of some new adequate auxiliary functions, the introduction of the convergence-control parameters, the original construction of the initial and of the first iteration, and the freedom to choose the method for determining the optimal values of the convergence-control parameters. All these led to an explicit and accurate analytical solution, which is another novelty proposed in the paper. This technique is very accurate, simple, effective, and easy to apply using only the first iteration. A second objective was to perform an analysis of stability of the model using the multiple scales method and the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix.

Resonant-force induced symmetry breaking in a quantum parametric oscillator

Abstract:A parametrically modulated oscillator has two opposite-phase vibrational states at half the modulation frequency. An extra force at the vibration frequency breaks the symmetry of the states. The effect can be extremely strong due to the interplay between the force and the quantum fluctuations resulting from the coupling of the oscillator to a thermal bath. The force changes the rates of the fluctuation-induced walk over the quantum states of the oscillator. If the number of the states is large, the effect accumulates to an exponentially large factor in the rate of switching between the vibrational states. We find the factor and analyze it in the limiting cases including the prebifurcation regime where the system is close but not too close to the bifurcation point.

Abstract:The resonant responses of a self-excited system with time delay under weak harmonic excitations were explored. Existence of principal resonance, or frequency entrainment, or phase locking phenomenon, was examined by the well-known KBM asymptotic method. Principal resonance curves on amplitude-detuning parametric plane are obtained, which reveal that bistable principal resonance, together with associated vibration hysteresis, or jump phenomenon, may exist under certain conditions. This kind of vibration hysteresis resulting from saddle-node bifurcation often occurs in driven Duffing oscillator, but seldom occurs in driven van der Pol oscillator. The probabilities for occurrence of either one of the bistable principal resonances were discussed qualitatively. On the other hand, through qualitative analysis of limit cycles on the van der Pol plane by the Poincaré-Dulac theorems, the existence of a unique stable combined resonance, or a beat phenomenon, in the neighborhood outside the frequency entrainment band is confirmed. The above results clearly describe the various situations of forced vibrations in the system considered and deepen one's understanding of nonlinear phenomena.

Abstract:In the present work, we examine the role of nonlinearity in vibrational resonance (VR) of a forced and damped form of a velocity-dependent potential system. Many studies have focused on studying the vibrational resonance in different potentials, like bistable potential, asymmetrically deformed potential, and rough potential. In this connection, velocity-dependent potential systems are very important from a physical point of view (Ex: pion-pion interaction, cyclotrons and other electromagnetic devices influenced by the Lorentz force, magnetrons, mass spectrometers). They also appear in several mechanical contexts. In this paper, we consider a nonlinear dynamical system with velocity-dependent potential along with additional damping and driven forces, namely a particle moving on a rotating-parabola system, and study the effect of two-frequency forcing with a wide difference in the frequencies. We report that the system exhibits vibrational resonance in a certain range of nonlinear strength. Using the method of separation of motions (MSM), an analytical equation for the slow oscillations of the system is obtained in terms of the parameters of the fast signal. The analytical computations and the numerical studies concur well.

Abstract:We investigate in this paper the superharmonic and subharmonic resonances of forced modified Rayleigh-Duffing oscillator. We analyse this equation by the method of multiple scales and we obtain superharmonic, subharmonic resonances order-two and order-three and primary resonance. We obtain also regions where steady-state subharmonic responses exist. We also use the amplitude-frequency curve for demonstrate the effect of various parameters on the response of the system. Finally, we focus our attention on chaotic motion of this oscillator by simulation. We obtain that this oscillator is chaotic for certains values for natural and excitation frequency but chaotic motion is not the same in subharmonic and superharmonic cases.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of the pendulum suspended on the forced Duffing oscillator. The detailed bifurcation analysis in two parameter space (amplitude and frequency of excitation) which presents both oscillating and rotating periodic solutions of the pendulum has been performed. We identify the areas with low number of coexisting attractors in the parameter space as the coexistence of different attractors has a significant impact on the practical usage of the proposed system as a tuned mass absorber.

Abstract:This paper proposes a theoretical framework and carries out numerical verification for suppressing homoclinic chaos of a class of vibro-impact oscillators by adding non-harmonic periodic excitations. Based on the Melnikov method of non-smooth systems, the theoretical sufficient conditions for suppressing homoclinic chaos are obtained by eliminating the simple zeros of the corresponding Melnikov function while retaining the infinite terms of the Fourier expansion of the non-harmonic periodic excitations. Furthermore, the effects of waveforms, amplitudes, initial phases, and impulse of the non-harmonic periodic excitations on chaos suppression are studied, and the optimal parameters for suppressing chaos are analytically obtained. Finally, the effectiveness of theories is verified by the vibro-impact Duffing oscillator. Numerical results show that chaos induced by the transversal intersection of homoclinic orbits can be weakened or even suppressed by adding the non-harmonic periodic excitations, and when the impulse transmitted by the non-harmonic periodic excitations is maximum, the effective amplitude for suppressing chaos is minimal. Moreover, there may be some phenomena that do not have too good a quantitative agreement between theoretical predictions and numerical results.

PERIODIC-IMPACT MOTIONS AND BIFURCATIONS OF VIBRATORY SYSTEMS WITH SYMMETRICAL RIGID CONSTRAINTS

Abstract:Two harmonically excited systems with symmetrical rigid constraints are considered. Repeated impacts usually occur in such systems due to the rigid constraints. The impact formats that occur in two systems are different, i.e., the components of one system collide with each other, and one of components of the other system collides with rigid obstacles. Dynamics of these systems are studied with special attention to pitchfork and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations associated with several periodic-impact motions. Two important parameters, the clearance and the excitation frequency, are considered, and the influence of these parameters on the symmetrical double-impact periodic motion and bifurcations is analyzed with emphases. With a decrease in the excitation frequency, symmetrical double-impact periodic motion usually undergoes Neimark-Sacker bifurcation for large values of clearances and pitchfork bifurcation for small values of clearances. Neimark-Sacker bifurcations, associated with symmetrical double-impact periodic motion, asymmetrical double-impact periodic motion, single-period four-impact symmetrical motion, double-period four-impact motion and double-period six-impact motion, etc., are analyzed in detail. The studies show that the vibratory systems with symmetrical rigid amplitude constraints may exhibit complex and rich quasi-periodic impact motions associated with several periodic-impact ones.

Wake-induced response of vibro-impacting systems

Abstract:The stability and bifurcation behaviour of a wake-induced vibro-impacting oscillator is studied. The effects of a discontinuity on the stability of the structure while it is undergoing phase-locked motions due to the surrounding fluid-structure interactions (FSI) are examined. The primary structure and the near wake dynamics are modelled as a harmonic oscillator and a Van der Pol oscillator, respectively, and are weakly coupled to each other via acceleration coupling. Qualitative changes in the dynamical behaviour of this system are investigated in the context of discontinuity-induced bifurcations (DIBs) that result from the interaction of fluid flow and non-smoothness from the primary structure. Phenomenological behaviours like the co-existence of attractors and period-adding cascades of limit cycles separated by chaotic orbits are observed. The existence of these phenomena is demonstrated via stability analysis using Floquet theory and the associated Lyapunov spectra. In addition, the behaviour of orbits in the local neighbourhood of the barrier is defined using a higher-order transverse discontinuity map. This mapping is implemented to obtain the respective Lyapunov exponents. Solutions obtained using this modified algorithm are demonstrated to accurately predict both stable and chaotic regimes, as observed from the corresponding bifurcation diagrams.

Interference aided finite resonant response in an undamped forced oscillator

Abstract:We apply perturbative techniques to a driven undamped sinusoidal oscillator at resonance. The angular displacement, $\theta$, obeys the dynamics $\Ddot{\theta} + \omega^{2} \sin{\theta} = H\cos{\omega t}$. The linearized approximation gives a divergent response (at long times) but the nonlinear terms make the response finite. We address the nonlinearity-induced finiteness in two ways by separately treating the short and long time scales. At long times, we use the traditional perturbative techniques to extract two drive dependent behaviours - one, the amplitude of oscillation scales as $(H/\omega^{2})^{1/3}$ and, two, the time period of the slow mode varies as $(H/\omega^{2})^{-2/3}$. For the early time behaviour, on the other hand, we devise an alternate perturbative expansion where the successive terms get larger with the order of evaluation but have alternating signs. The alternating signs (phase differences) between these terms leads to adestructive interference like effect. A careful consideration of this destructive interference like effect between successive terms leads to a finite response which describes the initial behaviour of the amplitude of the response reasonably correctly. We further note that for larger drive values, the system seems to undergo a first order transitional behaviour with a sudden jump in the largest Lyapunov exponent.

Abstract:By the Krylov-Bogoliubov method, the response computation of a forced vibration of the viscous damping bilinear hysteretic oscillator with cubic restoring force is studied. The approach is examined by fourthorder Runge-Kutta numerical integration. The Floquet theory is applied to determining the stability of periodic solutions. Through the numerical and theoretical investigation, a conclusion that the saddle-node bifuration due to the cubic nonlinear will happen under higher level exciting is reached.

Abstract:The dynamics of a multidegree impact vibrator subject to harmonic loading is investigated. The system is represented by a lumped mass model which hits and rebounds from a rigid wall during vibration. The periodic solution to the equations of motion withNforcing cycles andPimpacts is formulated. The variational equations and the resulting transition matrix for investigating local stability of the periodic solutions are derived. A two-degree-of-freedom example is analysed, and a variety of motion types are found. Chaotic windows are present between regions of periodic response, and at these boundariesN-Pmotions are prevalent. Low velocity impacts are evident at exciting frequencies away from the natural frequencies. Two basins of attraction are computed, and the sensitivity to initial conditions is noted. The quality of theN-Pmotion is discussed from an engineering application perspective.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, vibrational resonance has garnered significant interest and evolved into a prominent research field. Classical vibrational resonance examines the response of a nonlinear system excited by two signals: a weak, slowly varying characteristic signal, and a fast-varying auxiliary signal. The characteristic signal operates on a much longer time scale than the auxiliary signal. Through the cooperation of the nonlinear system and these two excitations, the faint input can be substantially amplified, showcasing the constructive role of the fast-varying signal. Since its inception, vibrational resonance has been extensively studied across various disciplines, including physics, mathematics, biology, neuroscience, laser science, chemistry, and engineering. Here, we delve into a detailed discussion of vibrational resonance and the most recent advances, beginning with an introduction to characteristic signals commonly used in its study. Furthermore, we compile numerous nonlinear models where vibrational resonance has been observed to enhance readers' understanding and provide a basis for comparison. Subsequently, we present the metrics used to quantify vibrational resonance, as well as offer a theoretical formulation. This encompasses the method of direct separation of motions, linear and nonlinear vibrational resonance, re-scaled vibrational resonance, ultrasensitive vibrational resonance, and the role of noise in vibrational resonance. Later, we showcase two practical applications of vibrational resonance: one in image processing and the other in fault diagnosis. This presentation offers a comprehensive and versatile overview of vibrational resonance, exploring various facets and highlighting promising avenues for future research in both theory and engineering applications.

Abstract:Abstract.We undertake a detailed numerical study of the twin phenomenon of stochastic and vibrational resonance in a discrete model system in the presence of bichromatic input signal. A two parameter cubic map is used as the model that combines the features of both bistable and threshold systems. In addition to the results already shown for continuous systems, our analysis brings out several interesting features both for vibrational and stochastic resonance, including the existence of a cross over behavior between the two. In the regime of vibrational resonance, it is shown that the additional high frequency forcing can change the effective value of the system parameter resulting in the shift of the bistable window. In the case of stochastic resonance, the study reveals a fundamental difference between the bistable and threshold mechanisms in the response, with respect to multisignal input.

Abstract:We study the occurrence of vibrational resonance as well as the underlying mechanism in excitable systems. The single vibration resonance and vibration bi-resonance are observed when tuning the amplitude and frequency of high-frequency force simultaneously. Furthermore, by virtue of the phase diagram of low-frequency-signal-free FitzHugh-Nagumo model, it is found that each maxima of response measure is located exactly at the transition boundary of phase patterns. Therefore, it is the transition between different phase-locking modes that induces vibrational resonance in the excitable systems. Finally, this mechanism is verified in the Hodgkin-Huxley neural model. Our results provide insights into the transmission of weak signals in nonlinear systems, which are valuable in engineering for potential applications.
