Abstract:We study the rationality problem for nodal quartic double solids. In particular, we prove that nodal quartic double solids with at most six singular points are irrational, and nodal quartic double solids with at least eleven singular points are rational.

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Abstract:Cubic fourfolds of discriminant 24 contain special codimension-two algebraic cycles of degree 6 and self-intersection 20. Such cycles may be represented by singular scrolls or del Pezzo surfaces. A discriminant 24 cubic fourfold gives rise to a twisted surface, consisting of a degree-six K3 surface and a two-torsion element of its Brauer group. We show that the cubic fourfold is rational if the Brauer class vanishes. This yields a countably-infinite collection of new examples of rational cubic fourfolds, each of codimension two in moduli.

Abstract:We show that a very general quartic hypersurface in $\mathbb P^6 $ over a field of characteristic different from 2 does not admit a decomposition of the diagonal, hence is not retract rational. This generalizes a result of Nicaise--Ottem, who showed stable irrationality over fields of characteristic 0. To prove our result, we introduce a new cycle-theoretic obstruction that may be seen as an analogue of the motivic obstruction for rationality in characteristic zero, introduced by Nicaise--Shinder and Kontsevich--Tschinkel.

Abstract:We show that even dimensional Fermat cubic hypersurfaces are rational over any field of characteristic different from three by producing explicit rational parametrizations given by polynomials of low degree. As a byproduct of our rationality constructions we get estimates on the number of their rational points over a number field, and a class of quadro-cubic Cremona correspondences of even dimensional projective spaces.

Abstract:We give upper bounds for the number of rational points of bounded anti-canonical height on del Pezzo surfaces of degree at most five over any global field whose characteristic is not equal to two or three. For number fields these results are conditional on a conjecture relating the rank of an elliptic curve to its conductor, while they are unconditional in positive characteristic. For quartic or quintic del Pezzo surfaces with a conic bundle structure, we establish even stronger estimates unconditionally as long as the characteristic is not two.

Abstract:A cubic hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^n$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ is given by the vanishing locus of a cubic form $f$ in $n+1$ variables. It is conjectured that when $n \geq 4$, such cubic hypersurfaces satisfy the Hasse principle. This is now known to hold on average due to recent work of Browning, Le Boudec, and Sawin. Using this result, we determine the proportion of cubic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n$, ordered by the height of $f$, with a rational point for $n \geq 4$ explicitly as a product over primes $p$ of rational functions in $p$. In particular, this proportion is equal to 1 for cubic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n$ for $n \geq 9$; for $100\%$ of cubic hypersurfaces, this recovers a celebrated result of Heath-Brown that non-singular cubic forms in at least 10 variables have rational zeros. In the $n=3$ case, we give a precise conjecture for the proportion of cubic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ with a rational point.

Abstract:We show that any rational cubic hypersurface of dimension at least 33 vanishes on a projective rational line, reducing the previous lower bound of Wooley by two. The main ingredient is a result on linear spaces on quadratic forms over suitable imaginary quadratic field extensions of $\mathbb Q$.

Abstract:In this paper we mainly study sums of four rational squares with certain restrictions. Let Q≥0 be the set of nonnegative rational numbers. We establish the following four-square theorem for rational numbers: For any a, b, c, d ∈ Q≥0, each r ∈ Q≥0 can be written as x 2 + y+z+w with x, y, z, w ∈ Q≥0 such that ax+by+cz+dw is a rational square (or a rational cube). This paper also contains many conjectures; for example, for any positive integers a and b with gcd(a, b) = 1, we conjecture that each r ∈ Q≥0 can be written as aw + bx +y+ z with w, x, y, z ∈ Q.
Integers expressible as the sum of two rational cubes

Abstract:We prove that a positive proportion of integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not so expressible, thus proving a conjecture of Davenport. More generally, we prove that a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family have rank 0, and a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves with good reduction at 2 in any cubic twist family have rank 1. Our method involves proving that the average size of the 2-Selmer group of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family, having any given root number, is 3. We accomplish this by generalizing a parametrization, due to the second author and Ho, of elliptic curves with extra structure by pairs of binary cubic forms. We then use a novel combination of geometry-of-numbers methods and the circle method that builds on earlier work of Ruth and the first author. In particular, we make use of a new interpretation of the singular integral and series arising in the circle method in terms of real and $p$-adic Haar measures on the relevant group. We prove a uniformity estimate for integral points on the relevant quadric, which along with a sieve allows us to prove that the average size of the 2-Selmer group over the cubic twist family is 3. By suitably partitioning the subset of curves in the family with given root number, we effect a further sieve to show that the root number is equidistributed and that the same average, now taken over only those curves of given root number, is again 3. Finally, we apply the $p$-parity theorem of Dokchitser-Dokchitser and a $p$-converse theorem of Burungale-Skinner to conclude. We also prove the analogue of the above results for the sequence of square numbers: namely, we prove that a positive proportion of square integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not.

Rational Spherical Triangles

Abstract:A rational spherical triangle is a triangle on the unit sphere such that the lengths of its three sides and its area are rational multiples of $\pi$. Little and Coxeter have given examples of rational spherical triangles in 1980s. In this work, we are interested in determining all the rational spherical triangles. We introduce a conjecture on the solutions to a trigonometric Diophantine equation. An implication of the conjecture is that the only rational spherical triangles are the ones given by Little and Coxeter. We prove some partial results towards the conjecture.

Abstract:For any positive definite rational quadratic form $q$ of $n$ variables let $G(\mathbb{Q}^n, q)$ denote the graph with vertices $\mathbb{Q}^n$ and $x, y \in \mathbb{Q}^n$ connected iff $q(x - y) = 1$. This notion generalises standard Euclidean distance graphs. In this article we study these graphs and show how to find the exact value of clique number of the $G(\mathbb{Q}^n, q)$. We also prove rational analogue of the Beckman--Quarles theorem that any unit-preserving mapping of $\mathbb{Q}^n$ is an isometry.

Rational fibered cubic fourfolds

Abstract:Some classes of cubic fourfolds are birational to fibrations over $P^2$, where the fibers are rational surfaces. This is the case for cubics containing a plane (resp. an elliptic ruled surface), where the fibers are quadric surfaces (resp. del Pezzo sextic surfaces). It is known that the rationality of these cubic hypersurfaces is related to the rationality of these surfaces over the function field of $P^2$ and to the existence of rational (multi)sections of the fibrations. We study, in the moduli space of cubic fourfolds, the intersection of the divisor $C_{8}$ (resp. $C_{18}$) with $C_{14}$, $C_{26}$ and $C_{38}$, whose elements are known to be rational cubic fourfolds. We provide descriptions of the irreducible components of these intersections and give new explicit examples of rational cubics fibered in (quartic, quintic) del Pezzo surfaces or in quadric surfaces over $P^2$. We also investigate the existence of rational sections for these fibrations. Under some mild assumptions on the singularities of the fibers, these properties can be translated in terms of Brauer classes on certain surfaces.

Abstract:Sextic double solids, double covers of $\mathbb P^3$ branched along a sextic surface, are the lowest degree Gorenstein Fano 3-folds, hence are expected to behave very rigidly in terms of birational geometry. Smooth sextic double solids, and those which are $\mathbb Q$-factorial with ordinary double points, are known to be birationally rigid. In this article, we study sextic double solids with an isolated compound $A_n$ singularity. We prove a sharp bound $n \leq 8$, describe models for each $n$ explicitly and prove that sextic double solids with $n > 3$ are birationally non-rigid.

Double covers of smooth quadric threefolds with Artin-Mumford obstructions to rationality

Abstract:We study obstructions to rationality on a nodal Fano threefold $M$ that is a double cover of a smooth quadric threefold ramified over an intersection with a quartic threefold in $\mathbb{P}^4$. We prove that if $M$ admits an Artin--Mumford obstruction to rationality then it lies in one of three explicitly described families. Conversely, a general element of any of these families admits an Artin--Mumford obstruction to rationality. Only one of these three families was known before; other two families of nodal Fano threefolds with obstructions to rationality are new.

Cycles of Quadratic Polynomials and Rational Points on a Genus-Two Curve

Abstract:It has been conjectured that for $N$ sufficiently large, there are no quadratic polynomials in $\bold Q[z]$ with rational periodic points of period $N$. Morton proved there were none with $N=4$, by showing that the genus~$2$ algebraic curve that classifies periodic points of period~4 is birational to $X_1(16)$, whose rational points had been previously computed. We prove there are none with $N=5$. Here the relevant curve has genus~$14$, but it has a genus~$2$ quotient, whose rational points we compute by performing a~$2$-descent on its Jacobian and applying a refinement of the method of Chabauty and Coleman. We hope that our computation will serve as a model for others who need to compute rational points on hyperelliptic curves. We also describe the three possible Gal$_{\bold Q}$-stable $5$-cycles, and show that there exist Gal$_{\bold Q}$-stable $N$-cycles for infinitely many $N$. Furthermore, we answer a question of Morton by showing that the genus~$14$ curve and its quotient are not modular. Finally, we mention some partial results for $N=6$.
