Abstract:This article gives a fundamental discussion on variable coefficients, self-adjoint, formally partially hypoelliptic differential operators. A generalization of the results to pseudo differential operators, is given in a following article in ArXiv. Close to N. Nilsson "Some estimates for spectral functions connected with formally hypoelliptic differential operators" in Arkiv för matematik ,10, 1972, we give a construction and estimates for a fundamental solution to the operator in a suitable topology. We further give estimates of the corresponding spectral kernel.

Abstract:We report the operation of a Bloch oscillator. The active medium was a staticvoltage driven, doped GaAs/AlAs superlattice which was electromagnetically coupled to a resonator. The oscillator produced tuneable microwave radiation (frequency ~ 60 GHz; power ~ 0.5 mW; efficiency ~ 4 %). The gain (~ 10^4 /cm) was due to the nonlinearity mediated by miniband electrons. We also present a theory of the oscillator. The Bloch oscillator should in principle be feasible for generation of radiation up to frequencies of 10 THz and more.

Abstract:We obtain global analytic hypoellipticity for a class of differential operators that can be expressed as a zero-order perturbation of a sum of squares of vector fields with real-analytic coefficients on compact Lie groups. The key conditions are: the vector fields must satisfy Hörmander's finite type condition; there exists a closed subgroup whose action leaves the vector fields invariant; and the operator must be elliptic in directions transversal to the action of the subgroup. This paves the way for further studies on the regularity of sums of squares on principal fiber bundles.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a global theory of subelliptic pseudo-differential operators on arbitrary homogeneous vector bundles over orientable compact homogeneous manifolds. We will show that a global pseudo-differential calculus can be associated to the operators acting on any pair of homogeneous vector-bundles with base space $M,$ if the compact Lie group $G$ that acts on $M=G/K$ is endowed with a (Riemannian or) sub-Riemannian structure. This is always possible if we choose on $G$ a sub-Laplacian associated to a Hörmander system of vector-fields or we fix the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $G$. We begin with developing a global subelliptic symbolic calculus for vector-valued pseudo-differential operators on $G$ and then, we show that this vector-valued calculus induces a pseudo-differential calculus on homogeneous vector bundles, which, among other things, is stable under the action of the complex functional calculus. We prove global versions of the Calderón-Vaillancourt theorem, Fefferman theorem and also, of the Gårding inequality. We present applications of the obtained Gårding inequality to the wellposedness of evolution problems. We characterise the classes of pseudo-differential operators on homogeneous vector bundles in the sense of Hörmander (which are defined by using local coordinate systems) in terms of their global symbols. Finally, using this formalism, we compute the global symbol of the exterior derivative, its adjoint, and the symbol of the Dirac operator on the vector bundle of differential forms. We hope that this work will provide a solid foundation for further research using the global quantisation of operators on (vector-bundles over) compact homogeneous manifolds.

Abstract:We introduce two new classes of pseudo-differential operators on open curves. They correspond via a change of variables to subclasses of the periodic pseudo-differential operators, which respectively stabilize even and odd functions. The resulting symbolic calculus can be applied to the analysis of the Helmholtz weighted layer potentials on open curves. In particular, we build some low order parametrices of the layer potentials which take the form of square roots of tangential operators. This gives some foundation for the construction of efficient preconditioners for the Helmholtz scattering problem by a screen in 2D.

Abstract:In this memoir we extend the theory of global pseudo-differential operators to the setting of arbitrary sub-Riemannian structures on a compact Lie group. More precisely, given a compact Lie group $G$, and the sub-Laplacian $\mathcal{L}$ associated to a system of vector fields $X=\{X_1,\cdots,X_k\}$ satisfying the Hörmander condition, we introduce a (subelliptic) pseudo-differential calculus associated to $\mathcal{L},$ based on the matrix-valued quantisation process developed in [138]. This theory will be developed as follows. First, we will investigate the singular kernels of this calculus, estimates of $L^p$-$L^p$, $H^1$-$L^1$, $L^\infty$-$BMO$ type and also the weak (1,1) boundedness of these subelliptic Hörmander classes. Between the obtained estimates we prove subelliptic versions of the celebrated sharp Fefferman $L^p$-theorem and the Calderón-Vaillancourt theorem. The obtained estimates will be used to establish the boundedness of subelliptic operators on subelliptic Sobolev and Besov spaces. We will investigate the ellipticity, the construction of parametrices, the heat traces and the regularisation of traces for the developed subelliptic calculus. A subelliptic global functional calculus will be established as well as a subelliptic version of Hulanicki theorem. The approach established in characterising our subelliptic Hörmander classes (by proving that the definition of these classes is independent of certain parameters) will be also applied in order to characterise the global Hörmander classes on arbitrary graded Lie groups developed in [90].

Abstract:This article presents a survey of recent developments on pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative tori. We describe currently available constructions of those operators: by means of a $C^*$--dynamical system, by using an analogue of the Fourier series representation of a function in the (commutative) torus $C^\infty(\mathbb{T}^n)$, as Rieffel deformations of the standard pseudodifferential operators on $C^\infty(\mathbb{T}^n)$, and in association to certain spectral triples.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider periodic boundary value problems for differential equations whose coefficients are trigonometric polynomials. We construct the spaces of generalized functions, where such problems have solutions. In particular, the solvability space of a periodic analogue of the Mizohata equation is constructed. We build also a periodic analogue and a generalization of the construction of the nonstandard analysis, where infinitely smalls are not only functions, but also functional spaces. To show that not all constructions on the torus lead to a simplification in compare with the plane, we consider a periodic analogue of the hypoelliptic differential operator and show that its number-theoretic properties are significant. In particular, it turns out that if a polynomial with integer coefficients is irreducible in the rational field, then the corresponding differential operator is hypoelliptic on the torus.

Abstract:We consider a class of discrete operators introduced by O. Chodosh, acting on infinite sequences and mimicking standard properties of pseudo-differential operators. By using a new approach, we extend this class to finite or periodic sequences, allowing a general representation of discrete pseudo-differential operators obtained by finite differences approximations and easily transferred to time discretizations. In particular we can define the notion of order and regularity, and we recover the fundamental property, well known in pseudo-differential calculus, that the commutator of two discrete operators gains one order of regularity. As examples of practical applications, we revisit standard error estimates for the convergence of splitting methods, obtaining in some Hamiltonian cases no loss of derivative in the error estimates, in particular for discretizations of general waves and/or water-waves equations. Moreover, we give an example of preconditioner constructions inspired by normal form analysis to deal with the similar question for more general cases.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the semiclassical version of pseudo-differential operators on the lattice space $\hbar \mathbb{Z}^n$. The current work is an extension of a previous work and agrees with it in the limit of the parameter $\hbar \rightarrow 1$. The various representations of the operators will be studied as well as the composition, transpose, adjoint and the link between ellipticity and parametrix of operators. We also give the conditions for the $\ell^p(\hbar \mathbb{Z}^n)$, weighted $\ell^2(\hbar \mathbb{Z}^n)$ boundedness and $\ell^p(\hbar \mathbb{Z}^n)$ compactness of operators. We investigate the relation between the classical and semi-classical quantization and employ its applications to Schatten-Von Neumann classes on $\ell^2( \hbar \mathbb{Z}^n)$. We establish Gårding and sharp Gårding inequalities, with an application to the well-posedness of parabolic equations on the lattice $\hbar \mathbb{Z}^n$. Finally we verify that in the limiting case where $\hbar \rightarrow 0$ the semi-classical calculus of pseudo-differential operators recovers the classical Euclidean calculus, but with a twist.

More Differential Operators on Almost Hermitian Manifolds

Abstract:In 1980 Michelsohn defined a differential operator on sections of the complex Clifford bundle over a compact Kähler manifold M . This operator is a differential and its Laplacian agrees with the Laplacian of the Dolbeault operator on forms through a natural identification of differential forms with sections of the Clifford bundle. Relaxing the condition that M be Kähler, we introduce two differential operators on sections of the complex Clifford bundle over a compact almost Hermitian manifold which naturally generalize the one introduced by Michelsohn. We show surprising Kähler-like symmetries of the kernel of the Laplacians of these operators in the almost Hermitian and almost Kähler settings, along with a correspondence of these operators to operators on forms which are of present interest in almost complex geometry.

Abstract:We push the definition of multiple operator integrals (MOIs) into the realm of unbounded operators, using the pseudodifferential calculus from the works of Connes and Moscovici, Higson, and Guillemin. This in particular provides a natural language for operator integrals in noncommutative geometry. For this purpose, we develop a functional calculus for these pseudodifferential operators. To illustrate the power of this framework, we provide a pertubative expansion of the spectral action for regular $s$-summable spectral triples $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{H}, D)$, and an asymptotic expansion of $\mathrm{Tr}(P e^{-t(D+V)^2})$ as $t \downarrow 0$, where $P$ and $V$ belong to the algebra generated by $\mathcal{A}$ and $D$, and $V$ is bounded and self-adjoint.

Abstract:Boundedness properties for pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the bilinear Hörmander classes of sufficiently negative order are proved. The results are obtained in the scale of Lebesgue spaces and, in some cases, end-point estimates involving weak-type spaces and BMO are provided as well. From the Lebesgue space estimates, Sobolev ones are then easily obtained using functional calculus and interpolation. In addition, it is shown that, in contrast with the linear case, operators associated with symbols of order zero may fail to be bounded on products of Lebesgue spaces.

Abstract:Let $-\im\Lie_\T$ (essentially Lie derivative with respect to $\T$, a smooth nowhere zero real vector field) and $P$ be commuting differential operators, respectively of orders 1 and $m\geq 1$, the latter formally normal, both acting on sections of a vector bundle over a closed manifold. It is shown that if $P+(-i\Lie_\T)^m$ is elliptic then the restriction of $-\im\Lie_\T$ to $\Dom\subset \ker P\subset L^2$ yields a selfadjoint operator $-\im\Lie_\T|_\Dom:\Dom\subset\ker P\to \ker P$ with compact resolvent ($\Dom$ is specified carefully). It is also shown that, in the presence of an additional hypothesis on microlocal hypoellipticity of $P$, $-\im\Lie_\T|_\Dom$ is semi-bounded. These results are applied to CR manifolds on which $\T$ acts as an infinitesimal CR transformation which are then shown to yield versions of Kodaira's vanishing theorem.

Abstract:We prove a general black box result which produces algebras of pseudodifferential operators (ps.d.o.s) on noncompact manifolds, together with a precise principal symbol calculus. Our construction (which also applies in parameter-dependent settings, with phase space weights and variable differential and decay orders) recovers most of the ps.d.o. algebras which have been introduced in recent years as tools for the microlocal analysis of non-elliptic partial differential equations. This includes those used for proving resolvent bounds (b- and scattering algebras and resolved or semiclassical versions thereof), studying waves on asymptotically flat spacetimes (3b-, edge-b-, and desc-algebras), inverting geodesic X-ray transforms (semiclassical foliation and 1-cusp algebras), and many others. Our main result rests on the novel notion of manifolds with scaled bounded geometry. A scaling encodes, in each distinguished chart of a manifold with bounded geometry, the amounts in $(0,1]$ by which the components of a uniformly bounded vector field are scaled. This decouples the regularity of the coefficients of elements of the resulting Lie algebra $\mathcal{V}$ of vector fields from the pointwise size of their coefficients. When the scaling tends to $0$ at infinity, the approximate constancy of coefficients of elements of $\mathcal{V}$ on increasingly large cubes, as measured using $\mathcal{V}$, gives rise to a principal symbol which captures $\mathcal{V}$-operators modulo operators of lower differential order and more decay.
