Abstract:Much concern has been raised of late regarding factors predicting vulnerability to addictive behaviors in general and most recently those related to the newly emerging area of risk of excessive and addictive patterns of use on the internet, including social media and gaming. The current study was designed to investigate the relationship between levels of addictive patterns of internet usage (as related to social media) and perceived self-efficacy among university-aged students in Palestine (a country with some of the highest levels of internet addiction). The sample consisted of 505 university students, selected randomly across area of study. Results indicated a high negative relationship between excessive internet use/addictive patterns of use and perceived self-efficacy. Findings conversely showed no significant differences in internet addiction and perceived self-efficacy dependent on area of study, gender, age or academic level. These conclusions illuminate concerns related to factors of vulnerability as well as possible negative effects of excessive internet use and self-efficacy, especially in the highly sensitive group of university students where behavioral patterns may lead to lifelong habits and/or interfere with developmental and educational tasks and demands. In addition, as self-efficacy is known to be a risk factor in both symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation, further research into this relationship may be critical in devising interventions to both reduce internet addiction and increase self-efficacy during the critical life period of late adolescence.

Abstract:Background and aims There is growing evidence on the contribution of psychological factors to internet addiction; yet it remains inconsistent and deserves further exploration. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the psychological symptoms (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms, stress, depression, anxiety and loneliness) and internet addiction (IA) among the university students in Malaysia. Materials and methods A total of 480 students from different faculties in a Malaysian public university participated in this study. They were selected by simple random sampling method. They completed self-administered questionnaires including the Malay Version of Internet Addiction Test (MVIAT)) to measure internet addiction and Adult Self-Report Scale (ASRS) Symptom Checklist, Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) and UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3) to assess for ADHD symptoms, depression, anxiety, stress, and loneliness respectively. Results The prevalence of IA among university students was 33.33% (n = 160). The respondents’ mean age was 21.01 ± 1.29 years old and they were predominantly females (73.1%) and Malays (59.4%). Binary logistic regression showed that gender (p = 0.002; OR = 0.463, CI = 0.284–0.754), ADHD inattention (p = 0.003; OR = 2.063, CI = 1.273–3.345), ADHD hyperactivity (p<0.0001; OR = 2.427, CI = 1.495–3.939), stress (p = 0.048; OR = 1.795, CI = 1.004–3.210) and loneliness (p = 0.022; OR = 1.741, CI = 1.084–2.794) were significantly associated with IA. Conclusion A third of university students had IA. In addition, we found that those who were at risk of IA were males, with ADHD symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity, who reported stress and loneliness. Preventive strategy to curb internet addiction and its negative sequelae may consider these factors in its development and implementation.

Abstract:Addiction is an extreme craving for and commitment to something, physically or psychologically. Currently, addiction to social media is the main emerging technology addiction, especially among the young generation. The main aim of the current study was to evaluate the status of Facebook addiction and its relation to academic performance and other correlates among university students. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 422 students from December 1–30, 2021, and Facebook addiction was examined with the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale (BFAS). The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Study Habit Questionnaire (SHQ) were employed to assess self-esteem, anxiety and depression symptoms, and study habits, respectively. Systematic random sampling was used to recruit the subjects, and the data were analyzed by SPSS version 23.0. Statistics such as percentages, frequencies, mean ± SD, and mean differences were calculated. Multiple regression analysis was performed, and all the required assumptions were checked. The statistical significance was declared at a p-value < 0.05 and a 95% CI. Results revealed that, the mean age of the students was 23.62 (SD = ±1.79) and 51.6% of the participants were male. The majority of the participants were addicted to Facebook, and Facebook addiction was positively linked with factors like lower academic achievements and the symptoms of anxiety and depression. In conclusion, Facebook addiction was found to be higher among study participants, and it is negatively affecting their academic performances. Similarly, it was associated with affected mental well-being and reduced self-esteem. It is better for the legislative body of the university to put firm policies in place for promoting safe use and reducing the detrimental effects of this problem among students.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Internet addiction is a global phenomenon that causes serious problems in mental health and social communication. Students form a vulnerable group, since they have free, easy, and daily access to the internet.OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to investigate perceived social support, self-esteem, and internet addiction among Al-Zahra University students.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the current descriptive research, the statistical sample consisted of 101 female students residing at AL-Zahra University dormitory, Tehran, Iran. Participants were randomly selected and their identities were classified. Then, they completed the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale, and Yang Internet Addiction Test. After completion of the questionnaires, the data were analyzed using the correlation test and stepwise regression.RESULTS: The Pearson correlation coefficient indicated significant relationships between self-esteem and internet addiction (P < 0.05, r = -0.345), perceived social support (r = 0.224, P < 0.05), and the subscale of family (r = 0.311, P < 0.05). The findings also demonstrated a significant relationship between internet addiction and perceived social support (r = -0.332, P < 0.05), the subscale of family (P < 0.05, r = -0.402), and the other subscales (P < 0.05, r = -0.287). Results of the stepwise regression showed that the scale of internet addiction and the family subscale were predicative variables for self-esteem (r = 0.137, P < 0.01, F2, 96 = 77.7).CONCLUSIONS: Findings of the current study showed that persons with low self-esteem were more vulnerable to internet addiction.
Facebook addiction and loneliness in the post-graduate students of a university in southern India

Abstract:Background: Facebook is a social networking site (SNS) for communication, entertainment and information exchange. Recent research has shown that excessive use of Facebook can result in addictive behavior in some individuals. Aim: To assess the patterns of Facebook use in post-graduate students of Yenepoya University and evaluate its association with loneliness. Methods: A cross-sectional study was done to evaluate 100 post-graduate students of Yenepoya University using Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale (BFAS) and University of California and Los Angeles (UCLA) loneliness scale version 3. Descriptive statistics were applied. Pearson's bivariate correlation was done to see the relationship between severity of Facebook addiction and the experience of loneliness. Results: More than one-fourth (26%) of the study participants had Facebook addiction and 33% had a possibility of Facebook addiction. There was a significant positive correlation between severity of Facebook addiction and extent of experience of loneliness ( r = .239, p = .017). Conclusion: With the rapid growth of popularity and user-base of Facebook, a significant portion of the individuals are susceptible to develop addictive behaviors related to Facebook use. Loneliness is a factor which influences addiction to Facebook.

Abstract:Abstract Addiction toward social media has become a new norm, especially among young adolescent. Social media users in Malaysia accounted to nearly 20 million, more than half of the population. Some individual having more than one account in different social media platform. With the increasing prevalent of social media addiction among young adolescent, this study ought to identify what are the critical factors that can influence one addiction toward social media. Based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and flow-happiness theory, this study would like to unfold this issue and connect the possible factors that play critical role in user’s social media addiction based on its detrimental impact. Using partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), this study applies the quantitative study by testing the antecedents of social media addition. 217 respondents who are mainly university students responded to the survey. It was found that the most critical factor is perceived ease of use on perceived usefulness and subsequently attitude. The second most critical path is user’s enjoyment toward satisfaction. Surprisingly, perceived usefulness towards habit and attitude toward social media addiction itself was not significant. This study would help practitioners to implement mitigating strategy to reduce social media addiction young adolescent, especially those who studying in school and higher education institution.

Abstract:The social media platform is extremely popular among undergraduate students. Along with the increase in social media usage, phenomena such as the fear of missing out are also becoming more prevalent among this group. It is hypothesized that excessive usage of social media contributes to the psychological decline of undergraduate students. This study aimed to examine the relationship between social media usage and the fear of missing out among undergraduate students. In addition, this study also examined the level of social media usage and the fear of missing out. The study adopted a quantitative approach, specifically a correlational research design. Data were collected from 306 undergraduates at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia using the social networking time use scale and fear of missing out (FOMO) scale instruments to measure social media usage and fear of missing out, respectively. Descriptive analysis revealed that undergraduates have a moderate level of social media usage and a moderate level of fear of missing out. Meanwhile, the inferential analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between the usage of social media and the level of fear of missing out among undergraduates. In conclusion, the study results indicate that social media usage does influence the fear of missing out among undergraduates, although the coefficient was weak.

Abstract:Purpose Restrictions imposed on freedom of movement and interaction with others due to the COVID-19 pandemic have had the effect of causing many people, especially students, to become addicted to social media. This study aims to investigate the effect of social media addiction on the academic performance of Sri Lankan government university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach A convenience sampling technique was used to conduct a quantitative cross-sectional survey. The survey involved 570 respondents from nine state universities in Sri Lanka. The raw data from the completed questionnaires were coded and processed using SPSS for descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Findings The findings of this study indicated that the overall time spent on social networking increased dramatically during COVID-19. Based on the results, this study found that there was no association between the time spent on social media and the academic performance of students before COVID-19 came on the scene. However, a significant association was found between the time spent on social media and students’ performance during the pandemic. The authors concluded that overblown social media use, leading to addiction, significantly negatively affects academic performance. Originality/value This study helps to understand the impact of social media use on the academic performance of students during COVID-19. Restrictions imposed by COVID-19 have changed the typical lifestyle of the students. Therefore, social media usage should be reassessed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings of the study will comprise these new insights, and they may well show how to adapt social media to contribute to academic work in meaningful ways.

Abstract:Problematic use of Internet (PUI) and problematic use of Facebook (PUF) has been linked to escalating behavioral health issues among university students and has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study estimated the prevalence of and explored associated factors for PUI and PUF among Bangladeshi university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional online survey was undertaken among 1101 Bangladeshi university students between November and December 2020. The Internet Addiction Test and Facebook Addiction Scale were used to assess PIU and PUF, respectively. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed to adjust for confounders. Among the participants, PUI and PUF were found in 39.3% and 37.1%, respectively. The multiple linear regression model indicated PUI was significantly associated with participants residing in a village, arts majors, those unsatisfied with their major, having mediocre parental relationships, failure in romantic relationships, physical comorbidities, longer use of the Internet, using the Internet for purposes other than education, using social media, and downloading movies/TV series. PUF was significantly associated with village residence, lower income, arts majors, failure in romantic relationships, longer use of the Internet, using the Internet for purposes other than education, and downloading movies/TV series. Both PUI and PUF have been prevalent among Bangladeshi university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Longitudinal & exploratory studies are warranted in the future to identify causal factors for PUI and PUF and appropriate interventions should be designed quickly for this population.

Abstract:This study delves into the intricate dynamics of internet addiction among university students, leveraging a comprehensive quantitative approach to unravel the myriad factors influencing this modern-day malaise. Utilizing logistic regression analysis, this research delineates the predictive significance of Daily Internet Usage Time (DIUT) and Communicative Internet Use Frequency (CIUF) on the propensity for internet addiction, with the analysis substantiating these variables as potent predictors. The model elucidates a significant variance in internet addiction, affirming the complexity of internet addiction as influenced by a constellation of behavioral patterns. Amidst the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic's exacerbation of digital dependency, this investigation sheds light on the escalation of internet use to addictive levels, prompted by prolonged isolation and the pivot to online learning platforms. This study underscores the resultant educational and psychological ramifications, highlighting a surge in addiction and its associated detriments such as diminished academic performance, social isolation, and a deterioration in mental health. Comparison of these findings with existing literature reveals a nuanced understanding of internet addiction, characterised by the interaction between individual behaviours and broader socio-economic and psychological contexts, such as the duration of daily internet use and the frequency of communicative internet use. This synthesis argues for a holistic strategy to address internet addiction, emphasizing the need for educational interventions, improving digital literacy and promoting healthy digital habits. By pinpointing the multifaceted nature of internet addiction and its predictors within the university student demographic, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse on digital dependency, proposing a multidisciplinary approach to develop resilient academic environments and support systems. Purposes of internet use among Iranian university students: exploring its relationship with social networking site (SNS) addiction

Abstract:Background: Higher education students are heavy users of the internet for a wide variety of reasons, including Social Networking Sites (SNSs). This study investigated various purposes of internet use among undergraduate university students, and how different categories of such activities are related to SNS addiction. Methods: The sample set from 420 SNS users (280 females), a survey questionnaire was used to collect the information, including demographic information, purposes for internet usage (social, entertainment, academic, and economic purposes), and SNS addiction. Descriptive statistics, correlation, and a path diagram to estimate the regression coefficients were used to examine the data. Results: Findings revealed that the most common purposes for using the internet were online social networking and information seeking, followed by listening to music or watching movies, learning, relaxing, using email for educational needs, and reading socio-political news. In the comparison between categories of purposes for internet usage, the most prevalent group of purposes were academic and informative, recreational, social, and economic categories respectively. Moreover, the most significant influences belonged to the social group [positively], the academic and informative group (negatively), and the recreational group (positively) on SNS addiction respectively. The economic group of purposes did not have a significant influence on SNS addiction. Conclusion: This study has important implications for education and health providers, particularly in universities; we recommend that they try to improve students' mental health and academic performance by providing opportunities for them to improve their IT literacy and skills.
The Exploration of the Addiction by Using Mobile Phone among University Students

Abstract:Digital addiction has been called digital dependency and digital compulsivity. By any name, it is a compulsive behaviour that completely dominates the addict’s life. Digital addicts make the digital technology a priority more important than family, friends, and work. The digital technology becomes the organizing principle of addicts’ lives. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between Digital Addiction (DA) and academic performance among college students in public and private university. This study also identified the differences in digital addiction in terms of gender. The statistical techniques frequency and percentage are used to identify the patterns of using the Internet; t-test and one-way ANOVA is used to examine the differences in DA in terms of demographic factors. Pearson correlation technique will also be used to determine the relationship between DA and academic performance. This study helps to determine the level of digital addiction among college student and how its impacts their academic performance.

Abstract:In the twenty-first century, social media platforms have transformed communication, entertainment, and information dissemination, creating virtual communities that facilitate instant connectivity and real-time engagement. Despite these benefits, there are growing concerns about social media addiction and problematic internet use, particularly its negative association to personal relationships and social interactions. The current study addresses the gap in understanding the association of online engagement with sense of belonging of college students. The study utilized a correlational research design using stratified random sampling to gather responses from 464 college students across disciplines in an institution. Data was gathered using three questionnaires from previously validated studies and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlational analysis. The study found that moderate social media addiction and problematic internet use among students negatively impact their sense of belongingness. Significant negative correlations were identified, with higher online engagement linked to decreased feelings of community within the social environment. These findings highlight the need for balanced online and offline interactions to enhance students' social integration and overall well-being.

Abstract:With the extensive use of internet, social networking has become an important part of social interactions in our lives. The use of social networking affects the physical and mental health of an individual. Various aspects associated with prolonged and frequent use of social networking is comparable to behavioural addiction as it shows symptoms of increased dependence and withdrawal. Hence, there is a need to understand the various factors which may be associated with compulsive use of social media. Fear of missing out (FoMO) has been associated with negative affect, poor mental health, and excessive use of social media. The current research was conducted on a student sample of 267 boys and girls and found that the relationship between FoMO and psychological wellbeing was mediated by use of social media. The research has important implications as usage of internet and social media is on a continuous rise. The individual differences in the usage need to be ascribed to personal factors in order for a better understanding of the phenomenon.

Abstract:Background: Internet addiction causes a variety of social, interpersonal, psychological, and physical issues. We are confronting a worldwide crisis about internet addiction and its effects. Objectives: Utilizing five questionnaires to survey university students during the COVID-19 epidemic, the current study sought to evaluate internet addiction and associated risk variables. Methods: At the University of Medical Sciences in North Iran, a cross-sectional analytical investigation was carried out. The sample was done among 318 students, selected through the random cluster sampling method. Data collection was done during August and September 2021. Results: Based on our findings, the prevalence of internet addiction was 28.9% (92/318). Our results revealed that women are at twice the twice the risk of internet addiction as men (p = 0.028). Students in the medicinal field (p = 0.043; students with a positive history of mental illness in the family) p = 0.001 (and students with a fear of COVID-19) p = 0.002 (recognized in the risk of Internet addiction, thus depression) p < 0.001 (anxiety) p < 0.001 (somatization) p = 0.001 (and psychological distress) p < 0.001 are risk factors for internet addiction. Age, marital status, place of living, total social support, and use of Alcohol/cigarettes are not risk factors for internet addiction. Conclusions: The findings suggest that university students with a fear of COVID-19, depression, anxiety, somatization, psychological distress and a positive history of mental illness in the family, particularly medicinal field students, are at significant risk for Internet addiction.

Abstract:With the widespread use of smartphones among university students, smartphone addiction has become increasingly severe, negatively impacting mental health and social adaptation. This paper analyzes the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive characteristics of smartphone addiction among university students, exploring the roles of emotional motivation factors such as depression, anxiety, and loneliness, as well as cognitive-behavioral factors like sense of life meaning and core self-evaluation in the formation of addiction. It summarizes intervention measures related to emotions and motivation, as well as cognition and behavior. Future research should further explore the effectiveness of psychological measurement tools, the interaction between emotional and cognitive factors, and intervention methods incorporating modern technology to more comprehensively understand and address smartphone addiction among university students

Abstract:Purpose: The advent of internet based technology has resulted into borderless communication. This has led to free circulation of information in the world. Uganda being a free market of ideas attributed partly to internet based technology, the young people constantly participate in the creation, exchanging and sharing different content on social media platforms. Therefore, this paper intends to find out the different kinds of habits youths acquire from consuming social media content, identifies conditions through which youths acquire different habits from social media and examine the kinds of information youths share on social media and give reasons for sharing such information. Methodology: A sample size of 50 students was selected from the department of Journalism and communication studies, Uganda Martyrs University. This was a case study research approach focusing on facebook usage and research methods for collecting primary data included; questionnaires, interviews and participant observation. I majorly used facebook content analysis and descriptive statistics while interpreting the data collected regarding the research questions. Findings: According to the study findings, as the youths become heavy consumers of social media content, they become addicted and develop different habits like; self-isolation from relatives, eating habits, imitation habit, liking habit, and spreading rumour. The habit changes maybe either negative or positive depending on the nature of social media content consumed. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Facebook gives a wide range of experiences to its users; it allows young people, create and share any information of their choice in actual time.
