Abstract:Based only on classical Hamiltonian dynamics, we prove the maximum work principle in a system where macroscopic dynamical degrees of freedom are intrinsically coupled to microscopic degrees of freedom. Unlike recent identities between irreversible work and free energy, such as in the Jarzynski relation, the macroscopic dynamics is not governed by an external action but undergoes the back reaction of the microscopic degrees of freedom. Our theorems cover such physical situations as impact between macroscopic bodies, thermodynamic machines, and molecular motors.

Abstract:Boltzmann's principle S=k ln W allows to extend equilibrium thermo-statistics to ``Small'' systems without invoking the thermodynamic limit. The clue is to base statistical probability on ensemble averaging and not on time averaging. It is argued that due to the incomplete information obtained by macroscopic measurements thermodynamics handles ensembles or finite-sized sub-manifolds in phase space and not single time-dependent trajectories. Therefore, ensemble averages are the natural objects of statistical probabilities. This is the physical origin of coarse-graining which is not anymore a mathematical ad hoc assumption. From this concept all equilibrium thermodynamics can be deduced quite naturally including the most sophisticated phenomena of phase transitions for ``Small'' systems. Boltzmann's principle is generalized to non-equilibrium Hamiltonian systems with possibly fractal distributions ${\cal{M}}$ in 6N-dim. phase space by replacing the conventional Riemann integral for the volume in phase space by its corresponding box-counting volume. This is equal to the volume of the closure $\bar{\cal{M}}$. With this extension the Second Law is derived without invoking the thermodynamic limit. The irreversibility in this approach is due to the replacement of the phase-space volume by the volume of its closure $\bar{\cal{M}}$. The physical reason for this replacement is that macroscopic measurements cannot distinguish ${\cal{M}}$ from $\bar{\cal{M}}$. Whereas the former is not changing in time due to Liouville's theorem, the volume of the closure can be larger. In contrast to conventional coarse graining the box-counting volume is defined in the limit of infinite resolution. I.e. there is no artificial loss of information.

Abstract:Starting at the mesoscopic level with a general formulation of stochastic thermodynamics in terms of Markov jump processes, we identify the scaling conditions that ensure the emergence of a (typically nonlinear) deterministic dynamics and an extensive thermodynamics at the macroscopic level. We then use large deviations theory to build a macroscopic fluctuation theory around this deterministic behavior, which we show preserves the fluctuation theorem. For many systems (e.g. chemical reaction networks, electronic circuits, Potts models), this theory does not coincide with Langevin-equation approaches (obtained by adding Gaussian white noise to the deterministic dynamics) which, if used, are thermodynamically inconsistent. Einstein-Onsager theory of Gaussian fluctuations and irreversible thermodynamics are recovered at equilibrium and close to it, respectively. Far from equilibirum, the free energy is replaced by the dynamically generated quasi-potential (or self-information) which is a Lyapunov function for the macroscopic dynamics. Remarkably, thermodynamics connects the dissipation along deterministic and escape trajectories to the Freidlin-Wentzell quasi-potential, thus constraining the transition rates between attractors induced by rare fluctuations. A coherent perspective on minimum and maximum entropy production principles is also provided. For systems that admit a continuous-space limit, we derive a nonequilibrium fluctuating field theory with its associated thermodynamics. Finally, we coarse grain the macroscopic stochastic dynamics into a Markov jump process describing transitions among deterministic attractors and formulate the stochastic thermodynamics emerging from it.

Emergence of a second law of thermodynamics in isolated quantum systems

Abstract:The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of an isolated system can only increase over time. This appears to conflict with the reversible evolution of isolated quantum systems under the Schrödinger equation, which preserves the von Neumann entropy. Nonetheless, one finds that with respect to many observables, expectation values approach a fixed value -- their equilibrium value. This ultimately raises the question: in what sense does the entropy of an isolated quantum system increase over time? For classical systems, one introduces the assumption of a low entropy initial state along with the concept of ignorance about the microscopic details of the physical system, leading to a statistical interpretation of the second law. By considering the observables through which we examine quantum systems, both these assumptions can be incorporated, building upon recent studies of the equilibration on average of observables. While the statistical behavior of observable expectation values is well-established, a quantitative connection to entropy increase has been lacking so far. In deriving novel bounds for the equilibration of observables, and considering the entropy of the system relative to observables, we recover a variant of the second law: the entropy with respect to a given observable tends towards its equilibrium value in the course of the system's unitary evolution. These results also support recent findings which question the necessity of non-integrability for equilibration in quantum systems. We further illustrate our bounds using numerical results from the paradigmatic example of a quantum Ising model on a chain of spins. There, we observe entropy increasing up to equilibrium values, as well as fluctuations which expose the underlying reversible evolution in accordance with the derived bounds.

Abstract:The dynamics of molecular collisions in a macroscopic body are encoded by the parameter Thermodynamic entropy - a statistical measure of the number of molecular configurations that correspond to a given macrostate. Directionality in the flow of energy in macroscopic bodies is described by the Second Law of Thermodynamics: In isolated systems, that is systems closed to the input of energy and matter, thermodynamic entropy increases. The dynamics of the lower level interactions in populations of replicating organisms is encoded by the parameter Evolutionary entropy, a statistical measure which describes the number and diversity of metabolic cycles in a population of replicating organisms. Directionality in the transformation of energy in populations of organisms is described by the Fundamental Theorem of Evolution: In systems open to the input of energy and matter, Evolutionary entropy increases, when the energy source is scarce and diverse, and decreases when the energy source is abundant and singular. This article shows that when rho to 0, and N to infinity, where rho is the production rate of the external energy source, and N denote the number of replicating units, evolutionary entropy, an organized state of energy; and thermodynamic entropy, a randomized state of energy, coincide. Accordingly, the Fundamental Theorem of Evolution, is a generalization of the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

Strengthened second law for multi-dimensional systems coupled to multiple thermodynamic reservoirs

Abstract:The second law of thermodynamics can be formulated as a restriction on the evolution of the entropy of any system undergoing Markovian dynamics. Here I show that this form of the second law is strengthened for multi-dimensional, complex systems, coupled to multiple thermodynamic reservoirs, if we have a set of \textit{a priori} constraints restricting how the dynamics of each coordinate can depend on the other coordinates. As an example, this strengthened second law (SSL) applies to complex systems composed of multiple physically separated, co-evolving subsystems, each identified as a coordinate of the overall system. In this example, the constraints concern how the dynamics of some subsystems are allowed to depend on the states of the other subsystems. Importantly the SSL applies to such complex systems even if some of its subsystems can change state simultaneously, which is prohibited in a multipartite process. The SSL also strengthens previously derived bounds on how much work can be extracted from a system using feedback control, if the system is multi-dimensional. Importantly, the SSL does not require local detailed balance. So it potentially applies to complex systems ranging from interacting economic agents to co-evolving biological species.

Entanglement Theory and the Second Law of Thermodynamics

Abstract:Entanglement is central both to the foundations of quantum theory and, as a novel resource, to quantum information science. The theory of entanglement establishes basic laws, such as the non-increase of entanglement under local operations, that govern its manipulation and aims to draw from them formal analogies to the second law of thermodynamics. However, while in the second law the entropy uniquely determines whether a state is adiabatically accessible from another, the manipulation of entanglement under local operations exhibits a fundamental irreversibility which prevents the existence of such an order. Here we show that a reversible theory of entanglement and a rigorous relationship with thermodynamics may be established when one considers all non-entangling transformations. The role of the entropy in the second law is taken by the asymptotic relative entropy of entanglement in the basic law of entanglement. We show the usefulness of this new approach to general resource theories and to quantum information theory.

Small and simple systems that favor the arrow of time

Abstract:The 2nd law of thermodynamics yields an irreversible increase in entropy until thermal equilibrium is achieved. This irreversible increase is often assumed to require large and complex systems to emerge from the reversible microscopic laws of physics. We test this assumption using simulations and theory of a 1D ring of N Ising spins coupled to an explicit heat bath of N Einstein oscillators. The exact entropy of the spins and bath can be calculated for any N, with dynamics that is readily altered from reversible to irreversible. We find thermal equilibrium behavior in the thermodynamic limit, and in systems as small as N=2, but only if the microscopic dynamics is intrinsically irreversible.

Abstract:In this article, we continue the program started in [2] of exploring an important class of thermodynamic systems from a geometric point of view. The contents of this paper and the one already published in [2] provide a geometrical formulation, which tries to shed more light on the properties of thermodynamic systems without claiming to be a definitive theory. In order to model the time evolution of systems verifying the two laws of thermodynamics, we show that the notion of evolution vector field is adequate to appropriately describe such systems. Our formulation naturally arises from the introduction of a skew-symmetric bracket to which numerical methods based on discrete gradients fit nicely. Moreover, we study the corresponding Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism, discussing the fundamental principles from which the equations are derived. An important class of systems that is naturally covered by our formalism are composed thermodynamic systems, which are described by at least two thermal variables and exchange heat between its components.

Abstract:The second law of thermodynamics represents a universal principle applicable to all natural processes, physical systems, and engineering devices. Hatano and Sasa have recently put forward an extended form of the second law for transitions between nonequilibrium stationary states [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 3463 (2001)]. In this paper we further extend this form to an instantaneous interpretation, which is satisfied by quite general time-dependent stochastic processes including master-equation models and Langevin dynamics without the requirements of the stationarity for the initial and final states. The theory is applied to several thermodynamic processes, and its consistence with the classical thermodynamics is shown.

Abstract:Does thermodynamics still hold true for mecroscopic small systems with only limited degrees of freedom? Do concepts such as temperature, entropy, work done, heat transfer, isothermal processes, and the Carnot cycle remain valid? Does the thermodynamic theory for small systems need modifying or supplementing compared with traditional thermodynamics applicable to macroscopic systems? Taking a single-particle system for example, we investigate the applicability of thermodynamic concepts and laws in small systems. We have found that thermodynamic laws still hold true in small systems at an ensemble-averaged level. After considering the information erasure of the Maxwell’s demon, the second law of thermodynamics is not violated. Additionally, ‘small systems’ bring some new features. Fluctuations in thermodynamic quantities become prominent. In any process far from equilibrium, the distribution functions of thermodynamic quantities satisfy certain rigorously established identities. These identities are known as fluctuation theorems. The second law of thermodynamics can be derived from them. Therefore, fluctuation theorems can be considered an upgradation to the second law of thermodynamics. They enable physicists to obtain equilibrium properties (e.g. free energy difference) by measuring physical quantities associated with non-equilibrium processes (e.g. work distributions). Furthermore, despite some distinct quantum features, the performance of quantum heat engine does not outperform that of classical heat engine. The introduction of motion equations into small system makes the relationship between thermodynamics and mechanics closer than before. Physicists can study energy dissipation in non-equilibrium process and optimize the power and efficiency of heat engine from the first principle. These findings enrich the content of thermodynamic theory and provide new ideas for establishing a general framework for non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

Abstract:The challenges and claims of hypothetical violations of the Second Law of thermodynamics have been a topic of many scientific, philosophical and social publications, even in the most prestigious scientific journals. Fascination with challenging the Second Law has further accelerated throughout the development of statistical and quantum physics, and information theory. It is phenomenologically reasoned here that non-equilibrium, useful work-energy potential is always dissipated to heat, and thus thermodynamic entropy (a measure of thermal disorder, not any other disorder) is generated always and everywhere, at any scale without exception, including life processes, open systems, micro-fluctuations, gravity or entanglement. Furthermore, entropy cannot be destroyed by any means at any scale (entropy is conserved in ideal, reversible processes and irreversibly generated in real processes), and thus, entropy cannot overall decrease, but only overall increase. Creation of ordered structures or live species always dissipate useful energy and generate entropy, without exception, and thus without Second Law violation. Entropy destruction would imply spontaneous increase in non-equilibrium, with mass-energy flux displacement against cause-and-effect, natural forces, as well as negate the reversible existence of the very equilibrium. In fact, all resolved challengers’ paradoxes and misleading violations of the Second Law to date have been resolved in favor of the Second Law and never against. We are still to witness a single, still open Second Law violation, to be confirmed.

Abstract:The concept of entropy in nonequilibrium macroscopic systems is investigated in the light of an extended equation of motion for the density matrix obtained in a previous study. It is found that a time-dependent information entropy can be defined unambiguously, but it is the time derivative or entropy production that governs ongoing processes in these systems. The differences in physical interpretation and thermodynamic role of entropy in equilibrium and nonequilibrium systems is emphasized and the observable aspects of entropy production are noted. Definitions and Evolutions of Statistical Entropy for Hamiltonian Systems

Abstract:Regardless of studies and debates over a century, the statistical origin of the second law of thermodynamics still remains illusive. One essential obstacle is the lack of a proper theoretical formalism for non-equilibrium entropy. Here I revisit the seminal ideas about non-equilibrium statistical entropy due to Boltzmann and due to Gibbs, and synthesize them into a coherent and precise framework. Using this framework, I clarify the anthropomorphic principle of entropy, and analyze the evolution of entropy for classical Hamiltonian systems under different experimental setups. I find that evolution of Boltzmann entropy obeys a Stochastic H-Theorem, which relates probability of Boltzmann entropy increasing to that of decreasing. By contrast, the coarse-grained Gibbs entropy is monotonically increasing, if the microscopic dynamics is locally mixing, and the initial state is a Boltzmann state. These results clarify the precise meaning of the second law of thermodynamics for classical systems, and demonstrate that it is the initial condition as a Boltzmann state that is ultimately responsible for the arrow of time.
Macroscopic Fluxes and Local Reciprocal Relation in Second-Order Stochastic Processes Far from Equilibrium

Abstract:A stochastic process is an essential tool for the investigation of the physical and life sciences at nanoscale. In the first-order stochastic processes widely used in chemistry and biology, only the flux of mass rather than that of heat can be well defined. Here we investigate the two macroscopic fluxes in second-order stochastic processes driven by position-dependent forces and temperature gradient. We prove that the thermodynamic equilibrium defined through the vanishing of macroscopic fluxes is equivalent to that defined via time reversibility at mesoscopic scale. In the small noise limit, we find that the entropy production rate, which has previously been defined by the mesoscopic irreversible fluxes on the phase space, matches the classic macroscopic expression as the sum of the products of macroscopic fluxes and their associated thermodynamic forces. Further we show that the two pairs of forces and fluxes in such a limit follow a linear phenomenonical relation and the associated scalar coefficients always satisfy the reciprocal relation for both transient and steady states. The scalar coefficient is proportional to the square of local temperature divided by the local frictional coefficient and originated from the second moment of velocity distribution along each dimension. This result suggests the very close connection between the Soret effect (thermal diffusion) and Dufour effect at nanoscale even far from equilibrium.

Abstract:At very small scales, thermodynamic energy exchanges like work and heat become comparable to thermal energy of the system, which leads to unusual phenomena like the transient violations of Second Law. We explore the generic characters of such systems using the framework of Stochastic Thermodynamics and provide a preliminary overview of the basic concepts. Abstract:Entropy, its production, and its change in a dynamical system can be understood from either a fully stochastic dynamic description or from a deterministic dynamics exhibiting chaotic behavior. By taking the former approach based on the general diffusion process with diffusion $\tfrac{1}{\alpha}{\bf D}(\bf x)$ and drift $\bf b(\bf x)$, where $\alpha$ represents the ``size parameter'' of a system, we show that there are two distinctly different entropy balance equations. One reads ${\rm d} S^{(\alpha)}/{\rm d} t = e^{(\alpha)}_p + Q^{(\alpha)}_{ex}$ for all $\alpha$. However, the leading $\alpha$-order, ``extensive'', terms of the entropy production rate $e^{(\alpha)}_p$ and heat exchange rate $Q^{(\alpha)}_{ex}$ are exactly cancelled. Therefore, in the asymptotic limit of $\alpha\to\infty$, there is a second, local ${\rm d} S/{\rm d} t = \nabla\cdot{\bf b}({\bf x}(t))+\left({\bf D}:{\bf \Sigma}^{-1}\right)({\bf x}(t))$ on the order of $O(1)$, where $\tfrac{1}{\alpha}{\bf D}(\bf x(t))$ represents the randomness generated in the dynamics usually represented by metric entropy, and $\tfrac{1}{\alpha}{\bf \Sigma}({\bf x}(t))$ is the covariance matrix of the local Gaussian description at ${\bf x}(t)$, which is a solution to the ordinary differential equation $\dot{\bf x}={\bf b}(\bf x)$ at time $t$. Abstract:The Gibbs distribution universally characterizes states of thermal equilibrium. In order to extend the Gibbs distribution to non-equilibrium steady states, one must relate the self-information [Formula: see text] of microstate x to measurable physical quantities. This is a central problem in non-equilibrium statistical physics. By considering open systems described by stochastic dynamics which become deterministic in the macroscopic limit, we show that changes [Formula: see text] in steady state self-information along deterministic trajectories can be bounded by the macroscopic entropy production Σ. This bound takes the form of an emergent second law [Formula: see text], which contains the usual second law Σ ≥ 0 as a corollary, and is saturated in the linear regime close to equilibrium. We thus obtain a tighter version of the second law of thermodynamics that provides a link between the deterministic relaxation of a system and the non-equilibrium fluctuations at steady state. In addition to its fundamental value, our result leads to novel methods for computing non-equilibrium distributions, providing a deterministic alternative to Gillespie simulations or spectral methods.

Abstract:We propose a formal extension of thermodynamics and kinetic theories to a larger class of entropy functionals. Kinetic equations associated to Boltzmann, Fermi, Bose and Tsallis entropies are recovered as a special case. This formalism first provides a unifying description of classical and quantum kinetic theories. On the other hand, a generalized thermodynamical framework is justified to describe complex systems exhibiting anomalous diffusion. Finally, a notion of generalized thermodynamics emerges in the context of the the violent relaxation of collisionless stellar systems and two-dimensional vortices due to the existence of Casimir invariants and incomplete relaxation. A thermodynamical analogy can also be developed to analyze the nonlinear dynamical stability of stationary solutions of the Vlasov and 2D Euler-Poisson systems. On general grounds, we suggest that generalized entropies arise due to the existence of ``hidden constraints'' that modify the form of entropy that we would naively expect. Generalized kinetic equations are therefore ``effective'' equations that are introduced heuristically to describe complex systems.
