Abstract:We obtain a comparison result for solutions to nonlinear fully anisotropic elliptic problems by means of anisotropic symmetrization. As consequence we deduce a priori estimates for norms of the relevant solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we use Aleksandrov's reflection principle to prove symmetry of solutions to F(∇Sn2u+uI)=f(u,u2+|∇Snu|2), where u is the support function of a convex body, and F is a function of principal radii. As a corollary, alongside [Ivaki, arXiv:2307.06252], we provide an alternative proof of the uniqueness of solution to the isotropic Gaussian-Minkowski problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a priori estimates for the set of anti-symmetric solutions to a fractional Laplacian equation in a bounded domain using a blowing-up and rescaling argument. In order to establish a contradiction to possible blow-ups, we apply a certain variation of the moving planes method in order to prove a monotonicity result for the limit equation after rescaling.

Abstract:We establish a Talenti-type symmetrization result in the form of mass concentration (i.e. integral comparison) for very general linear nonlocal elliptic problems, equipped with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. In this framework, the relevant concentration comparison for the classical fractional Laplacian can be reviewed as a special case of our main result, thus generalizing the previous results in [21]. Finally, using an implicit time discretization techniques, similar results are obtained for the solutions of Cauchy-Dirichlet nonlocal linear parabolic problems.

Abstract:This work is concerned with a Pólya-Szegö type inequality for anisotropic functionals of Sobolev functions. The relevant inequality entails a double-symmetrization involving both trial functions and functionals. A new approach that uncovers geometric aspects of the inequality is proposed. It relies upon anisotropic isoperimetric inequalities, fine properties of Sobolev functions, and results from the Brunn-Minkowski theory of convex bodies. Importantly, unlike previously available proofs, the one offered in this paper does not require approximation arguments and hence allows for a characterization of extremal functions.

Abstract:In this paper we develop numerical analysis for finite element discretization of semilinear elliptic equations with potentially non-Lipschitz nonlinearites. The nonlinearity is essecially assumed to be continuous and monotonically decreasing including the case of non-Lipschitz or even non-Hölder continuous nonlinearities. For a direct discretization (without any regularization) with linear finite elements we derive error estimates with respect to various norms and illustrate these results with a numerical example.

Abstract:We prove a comparison theorem for the averages of the solutions of two exterior parabolic problems, the second being the "symmetrization" of the first one, by using approximation of the Schwarz symmetrization by polarizations, as it was introduced in [4]. This comparison provides an alternative proof, based on PDEs, of the isoperimetric inequality for the Wiener sausage, which was proved in [14].

Abstract:We establish an explicit $L^\infty(\Om)$ a priori estimate for weak solutions to subcritical elliptic problems with nonlinearity on the boundary, in terms of the powers of their $H^1(\Om)$ norms. To prove our result, we combine in a novel way Moser type estimates together with elliptic regularity and Gagliardo--Nirenberg interpolation inequality. We illustrate our result with an application to subcritical problems satisfying Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition.

Abstract:We provide symmetrization results in the form of mass concentration comparisons for fractional singular elliptic equations in bounded domains, coupled with homogeneous external Dirichlet conditions. Two types of comparison results are presented, depending on the summability of the right-hand side of the equation. The maximum principle arguments employed in the core of the proofs of the main results offer a nonstandard, flexible alternative to the ones described in [18, Theorem 31]. Some interesting consequences are Lp regularity results and nonlocal energy estimates for solutions.

Abstract:In this work we study a priori bounds for weak solution to elliptic problems with nonstandard growth that involves the so-called $g-$Laplace operator. The $g-$Laplacian is a generalization of the $p-$Laplace operator that takes into account different behaviors than pure powers. The method to obtain this a priori estimates is the so called ``blow-up'' argument developed by Gidas and Spruck. Then we applied this a priori bounds to show some existence results for these problems.

The feature of this study is the inclusion of a possibly singular gradient-dependent term $\Psi(u,\nabla u)=\sum_{j=1}^N |u|^{\theta_j-2}u\, |\partial_j u|^{q_j}$, where $\theta_j>0$ and $0\leq q_j<p_j$ for $1\leq j\leq N$. The existence of such weak solutions is contained in a recent paper by the authors.

Abstract:In this note, we prove interior a priori first‐ and second‐order estimates for solutions of fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic inequalities structured over the vector fields of Carnot groups, under the main assumption that u is semiconvex along the fields. These estimates for supersolutions are new even for linear subelliptic inequalities in nondivergence form, whereas in the nonlinear setting they do not require neither convexity nor concavity on the second derivatives. Abstract:The concern of this work is the generalization of an Asymptotic Preserving method for the highly anisotropic elliptic equations presented in [P. Degond, A. Lozinski, J. Narski, and C. Negulescu. An asymptotic-preserving method for highly anisotropic elliptic equations based on a micro-macro decomposition. J. Comput. Phys., 231(7):2724{2740, 2012]. The limitations of the method introduced there in are omitted by the introduction of a stabilization term in the Asymptotic Reformulation. Furthermore, anisotropic error indicators and mesh adaptation algorithms are proposed and tested allowing to reduce considerably the number of mesh points required to achieve prescribed precision. Reported meshes have maximum aspect ratio greater than 500.

Abstract:We consider a priori estimates of possibly sign-changing solutions to superlinear parabolic problems and their applications (blow-up rates, energy blow-up, continuity of blow-up time, existence of nontrivial steady states etc). Our estimates are based mainly on energy, interpolation and bootstrap arguments, but we also use the Pohozaev identity, for example. We first discuss some known results on local problems and then consider problems with nonlocal nonlinearities or nonlocal differential operators. In particular, we deal with the fractional Laplacian and nonlinearities of Choquard type.

Abstract:In this paper we study the prescribed centroaffine curvature problem in the Euclidean space Rn+1. This problem is equivalent to solving a Monge–Ampère equation on the unit sphere. It corresponds to the critical case of the Blaschke–Santaló inequality. By approximation from the subcritical case, and using an obstruction condition and a blow-up analysis, we obtain sufficient conditions for the a priori estimates, and the existence of solutions up to a Lagrange multiplier.

Abstract:We prove $\textit{a priori}$ and $\textit{a posteriori}$ Hölder bounds and Schauder $C^{1,\alpha}$ estimates for continuous solutions to singular/degenerate equations with variable coefficients of type $$ \mathrm{div}\left(|u|^a A\nabla w\right)=0\qquad\mathrm{in \ }\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n, $$ where the weight $u$ solves an elliptic equation of type $\mathrm{div}\left(A\nabla u\right)=0$ with a Lipschitz-continuous and uniformly elliptic matrix $A$ and has a nontrivial, possibly singular, nodal set. Such estimates are uniform with respect to $u$ in a class of normalized solutions having bounded Almgren's frequency. More precisely, we provide $\textit{a priori}$ Hölder bounds in any space dimension, and Schauder estimates when $n=2$. When $a=2$, the results apply to the ratios of two solutions to the same PDE sharing their zero sets. Then, one can infer higher order boundary Harnack principles on nodal domains by applying the Schauder estimates for solutions to the auxiliary degenerate equation. The results are based upon a fine blow-up argument, Liouville theorems and quasiconformal maps.

Abstract:We consider a general nonsymmetric second-order linear elliptic PDE in the framework of the Lax-Milgram lemma. We formulate and analyze an adaptive finite element algorithm with arbitrary polynomial degree that steers the adaptive mesh-refinement and the inexact iterative solution of the arising linear systems. More precisely, the iterative solver employs, as an outer loop, the so-called Zarantonello iteration to symmetrize the system and, as an inner loop, a uniformly contractive algebraic solver, e.g., an optimally preconditioned conjugate gradient method or an optimal geometric multigrid algorithm. We prove that the proposed inexact adaptive iteratively symmetrized finite element method (AISFEM) leads to full linear convergence and, for sufficiently small adaptivity parameters, to optimal convergence rates with respect to the overall computational cost, i.e., the total computational time. Numerical experiments underline the theory.

Abstract:In this paper, a symmetrized two-scale finite element method is proposed for a class of partial differential equations with symmetric solutions. With this method, the finite element approximation on a fine tensor product grid is reduced to the finite element approximations on a much coarse grid and a univariant fine grid. It is shown by both theory and numerics including electronic structure calculations that the resulting approximation still maintains an asymptotically optimal accuracy. Consequently the symmetrized two-scale finite element method reduces computational cost significantly.

Abstract:We provide rigorous and computable a-posteriori error estimates for first order finite-volume approximations of nonlinear systems of hyperbolic conservation laws in one spatial dimension. Our estimators rely on recent stability results by Bressan, Chiri and Shen and a novel method to compute negative order norms of residuals. Numerical experiments show that the error estimator converges with the rate predicted by a-priori error estimates.
