Abstract:We study left-hand side restrictions of the induced subgraph isomorphism problem: Fixing a class , for given graphs G and arbitrary H we ask for induced subgraphs of H isomorphic to G.For the homomorphism problem this kind of restriction has been studied by Grohe and Dalmau, Kolaitis and Vardi for the decision problem and by Dalmau and Jonsson for its counting variant.We give a dichotomy result for both variants of the induced subgraph isomorphism problem. Under some assumption from parameterized complexity theory, these problems are solvable in polynomial time if and only if contains no arbitrarily large graphs.All classifications are given by means of parameterized complexity. The results are presented for arbitrary structures of bounded arity which implies, for example, analogous results for directed graphs.Furthermore, we show that no such dichotomy is possible in the sense of classical complexity. That is, if there are classes such that the induced subgraph isomorphism problem on is neither in nor -complete. This argument may be of independent interest, because it is applicable to various parameterized problems.
On the complexity of Dominating Set for graphs with fixed diameter

Abstract:A set $S\subseteq V$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a dominating set if each vertex has a neighbor in $S$ or belongs to $S$. Dominating Set is the problem of deciding, given a graph $G$ and an integer $k\geq 1$, if $G$ has a dominating set of size at most $k$. It is well known that this problem is $\mathsf{NP}$-complete even for claw-free graphs. We give a complexity dichotomy for Dominating Set for the class of claw-free graphs with diameter $d$. We show that the problem is $\mathsf{NP}$-complete for every fixed $d\ge 3$ and polynomial time solvable for $d\le 2$. To prove the case $d=2$, we show that Minimum Maximal Matching can be solved in polynomial time for $2K_2$-free graphs.

Fundamental Dominations in Graphs

Abstract:Nine variations of the concept of domination in a simple graph are identified as fundamental domination concepts, and a unified approach is introduced for studying them. For each variation, the minimum cardinality of a subset of dominating elements is the corresponding fundamental domination number. It is observed that, for each nontrivial connected graph, at most five of these nine numbers can be different, and inequalities between these five numbers are given. Finally, these fundamental dominations are interpreted in terms of the total graph of the given graph, a concept introduced by the second author in 1965. It is argued that the very first domination concept, defined by O. Ore in 1962 and under a different name by C. Berge in 1958, deserves to be called the most fundamental of graph dominations.

Complexity Framework for Forbidden Subgraphs II: Edge Subdivision and the "H"-graphs

Abstract:For a fixed set ${\cal H}$ of graphs, a graph $G$ is ${\cal H}$-subgraph-free if $G$ does not contain any $H \in {\cal H}$ as a (not necessarily induced) subgraph. A recently proposed framework gives a complete classification on ${\cal H}$-subgraph-free graphs (for finite sets ${\cal H}$) for problems that are solvable in polynomial time on graph classes of bounded treewidth, NP-complete on subcubic graphs, and whose NP-hardness is preserved under edge subdivision. While a lot of problems satisfy these conditions, there are also many problems that do not satisfy all three conditions and for which the complexity in ${\cal H}$-subgraph-free graphs is unknown. We study problems for which only the first two conditions of the framework hold (they are solvable in polynomial time on classes of bounded treewidth and NP-complete on subcubic graphs, but NP-hardness is not preserved under edge subdivision). In particular, we make inroads into the classification of the complexity of four such problems: Hamilton Cycle, $k$-Induced Disjoint Paths, $C_5$-Colouring and Star $3$-Colouring. Although we do not complete the classifications, we show that the boundary between polynomial time and NP-complete differs among our problems and also from problems that do satisfy all three conditions of the framework, in particular when we forbid certain subdivisions of the ``H''-graph (the graph that looks like the letter ``H''). Hence, we exhibit a rich complexity landscape among problems for ${\cal H}$-subgraph-free graph classes.

Abstract:Let G=V,E be a simple graph. A subset D⊆V is a dominating set if every vertex not in D is adjacent to a vertex in D . The domination number of G , denoted by γG , is the smallest cardinality of a dominating set of G . The domination subdivision number sdγG of G is the minimum number of edges that must be subdivided (each edge can be subdivided at most once) in order to increase the domination number. In 2000, Haynes et al. showed that sdγG≤dGv+dGv−1 for any edge uv∈EG with dGu≥2 and dGv≥2 where G is a connected graph with order no less than 3. In this paper, we improve the above bound to sdγG≤dGu+dGv−NGu∩NGv−1 , and furthermore, we show the decision problem for determining whether sdγG=1 is NP-hard. Moreover, we show some bounds or exact values for domination subdivision numbers of some graphs.

We prove some sufficient conditions for effective solvability of the problem in such classes. As their corollary we determine the computational complexity for all sets of two connected forbidden induced subgraphs with at most five vertices except 13 explicitly enumerated cases

Fine-Grained Complexity of Multiple Domination and Dominating Patterns in Sparse Graphs

Abstract:The study of domination in graphs has led to a variety of domination problems studied in the literature. Most of these follow the following general framework: Given a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, decide if there is a set $S$ of $k$ vertices such that (1) some inner property $\phi(S)$ (e.g., connectedness) is satisfied, and (2) each vertex $v$ satisfies some domination property $\rho(S, v)$ (e.g., there is an $s\in S$ that is adjacent to $v$). Since many real-world graphs are sparse, we seek to determine the optimal running time of such problems in both the number $n$ of vertices and the number $m$ of edges in $G$. While the classic dominating set problem admits a rather limited improvement in sparse graphs (Fischer, Künnemann, Redzic SODA'24), we show that natural variants studied in the literature admit much larger speed-ups, with a diverse set of possible running times. Specifically, we obtain conditionally optimal algorithms for: 1) $r$-Multiple $k$-Dominating Set (each vertex must be adjacent to at least $r$ vertices in $S$): If $r\le k-2$, we obtain a running time of $(m/n)^{r} n^{k-r+o(1)}$ that is conditionally optimal assuming the 3-uniform hyperclique hypothesis. In sparse graphs, this fully interpolates between $n^{k-1\pm o(1)}$ and $n^{2\pm o(1)}$, depending on $r$. Curiously, when $r=k-1$, we obtain a randomized algorithm beating $(m/n)^{k-1} n^{1+o(1)}$ and we show that this algorithm is close to optimal under the $k$-clique hypothesis. 2) $H$-Dominating Set ($S$ must induce a pattern $H$). We conditionally settle the complexity of three such problems: (a) Dominating Clique ($H$ is a $k$-clique), (b) Maximal Independent Set of size $k$ ($H$ is an independent set on $k$ vertices), (c) Dominating Induced Matching ($H$ is a perfect matching on $k$ vertices).

Abstract:For any finite set $\mathcal{H} = \{H_1,\ldots,H_p\}$ of graphs, a graph is $\mathcal{H}$-subgraph-free if it does not contain any of $H_1,\ldots,H_p$ as a subgraph. In recent work, meta-classifications have been studied: these show that if graph problems satisfy certain prescribed conditions, their complexity is determined on classes of $\mathcal{H}$-subgraph-free graphs. We continue this work and focus on problems that have polynomial-time solutions on classes that have bounded treewidth or maximum degree at most~$3$ and examine their complexity on $H$-subgraph-free graph classes where $H$ is a connected graph. With this approach, we obtain comprehensive classifications for (Independent) Feedback Vertex Set, Connected Vertex Cover, Colouring and Matching Cut. This resolves a number of open problems. We highlight that, to establish that Independent Feedback Vertex Set belongs to this collection of problems, we first show that it can be solved in polynomial time on graphs of maximum degree $3$. We demonstrate that, with the exception of the complete graph on four vertices, each graph in this class has a minimum size feedback vertex set that is also an independent set.

Counting Small Induced Subgraphs with Hereditary Properties

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 2, Page 189-220, April 2024. We study the computational complexity of the problem [math] of counting [math]-vertex induced subgraphs of a graph [math] that satisfy a graph property [math]. Our main result establishes an exhaustive and explicit classification for all hereditary properties, including tight conditional lower bounds under the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH): If a hereditary property [math] is true for all graphs, or if it is true only for finitely many graphs, then [math] is solvable in polynomial time. Otherwise, [math] is [math]-complete when parameterized by [math], and, assuming ETH, it cannot be solved in time [math] for any function [math]. This classification features a wide range of properties for which the corresponding detection problem (as classified by Khot and Raman [Theoret. Comput. Sci., 289 (2002), pp. 997–1008]) is tractable but counting is hard. Moreover, even for properties which are already intractable in their decision version, our results yield significantly stronger lower bounds for the counting problem. As an additional result, we also present an exhaustive and explicit parameterized complexity classification for all properties that are invariant under homomorphic equivalence. By covering one of the most natural and general notions of closure, namely, closure under vertex-deletion (hereditary), we generalize some of the earlier results on this problem. For instance, our results fully subsume and strengthen the existing classification of [math] for monotone (subgraph-closed) properties due to Roth, Schmitt, and Wellnitz [SIAM J. Comput., (2022), pp. FOCS20-139–FOCS20-174].

Complexity Issues Concerning the Quadruple Roman Domination Problem in Graphs

Abstract:Given a graph $G$ with vertex set $V(G)$, a mapping $h : V(G) \rightarrow \lbrace 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 \rbrace$ is called a quadruple Roman dominating function (4RDF) for $G$ if it holds the following. Every vertex $x$ such that $h(x)\in \{0,1,2, 3\}$ satisfies that $h(N[x]) = \sum_{v\in N[x]} h(v) \geq |\{y:y \in N(x) \; \text{and} \; h(y) \neq 0\}|+4$, where $N(x)$ and $N[x]$ stands for the open and closed neighborhood of $x$, respectively. The smallest possible weight $\sum_{x \in V(G)} h(x)$ among all possible 4RDFs $h$ for $G$ is the quadruple Roman domination number of $G$, denoted by $\gamma_{[4R]}(G)$. This work is focused on complexity aspects for the problem of computing the value of this parameter for several graph classes. Specifically, it is shown that the decision problem concerning $\gamma_{[4R]}(G)$ is NP-complete when restricted to star convex bipartite, comb convex bipartite, split and planar graphs. In contrast, it is also proved that such problem can be efficiently solved for threshold graphs where an exact solution is demonstrated, while for graphs having an efficient dominating set, tight upper and lower bounds in terms of the classical domination number are given. In addition, some approximation results to the problem are given. That is, we show that the problem cannot be approximated within $(1 - \epsilon) \ln |V|$ for any $\epsilon > 0$ unless $P=NP$. An approximation algorithm for it is proposed, and its APX-completeness proved, whether graphs of maximum degree four are considered. Finally, an integer linear programming formulation for our problem is presented.

Unimodality and monotonic portions of certain domination polynomials

Abstract:Given a graph G on n vertices, a subset of vertices U⊆V(G) is dominating if every vertex of V(G) is either in U or adjacent to a vertex of U . The domination polynomial of G is the generating function whose coefficients are the number of dominating sets of a given size. In 2014, Alikhani and Peng conjectured that the domination polynomial is unimodal, i.e., its coefficients are non-decreasing and then non-increasing. We prove unimodality for spider graphs with at most 400 legs (of arbitrary length), lollipop graphs, arbitrary direct products of complete graphs, and Cartesian products of two complete graphs. We show that for every graph, a portion of the coefficients are non-increasing, and, for certain graphs with low upper domination number, this is sufficient to prove unimodality. Furthermore, we show that for graphs with m universal vertices , i.e., vertices of degree n−1 , the last 2−m−1(2m−1)n coefficients of their domination polynomial are non-increasing.

Abstract:A set D of vertices in G is a disjunctive dominating set in G if every vertex not in D is adjacent to a vertex of D or has at least two vertices in D at distance 2 from it in G . The disjunctive domination number, γ2d(G) , of G is the minimum cardinality of a disjunctive dominating set in G . In this paper, we show that if G be a graph of order at least 3, δ(G)≥2 and with no component isomorphic to any of eight forbidden graphs, then γ2d(G)≤|G|3 . Moreover, we provide an infinite family of graphs attaining this bound. In addition, we also study the case that G is a claw-free graph with minimum degree at least two.

Abstract:Let $G=(V, E)$ be a graph where $V$ and $E$ are the vertex and edge sets, respectively. For two disjoint subsets $A$ and $B$ of $V$, we say $A$ \textit{dominates} $B$ if every vertex of $B$ is adjacent to at least one vertex of $A$ in $G$. A vertex partition $\pi = \{V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_k\}$ of $G$ is called an \emph{upper domatic partition} of size $k$ if either $V_i$ dominates $V_j$ or $V_j$ dominates $V_i$ or both for all $i, j$, where $1\leq i<j\leq k$. The maximum integer $k$ for which the above partition exists is called the \emph{upper domatic number} of $G$, and it is denoted by $D(G)$. The \textsc{Maximum upper domatic number Problem} involves finding an upper domatic partition of a given graph with the maximum number of parts. It was known that the maximum upper domatic problem can be solved in linear time for trees. In this paper, we prove that this problem can be solved in linear time for \emph{split graphs} and for the \emph{complement of bipartite chain graphs}, two subclasses of chordal graphs. Moreover, we show that this problem can be solved in polynomial time for unicyclic graphs. Finally, we partially solve a conjecture regarding the sink set posed by Haynes et al. [The upper domatic number of a graph, \emph{AKCE Int. J. Graphs Comb.}, 17, 2020].

Abstract:The dominating graph of a graph G is a graph whose vertices correspond to the dominating sets of G and two vertices are adjacent whenever their corresponding dominating sets differ in exactly one vertex. Studying properties of dominating graph has become an increasingly interesting subject in domination theory. On the other hand, median graphs and partial cubes are two fundamental graph classes in graph theory. In this paper, we make some new connections between domination theory and the theory of median graphs and partial cubes. As the main result, we show that the following conditions are equivalent for every graph with no isolated vertex, and in particular, that the simple third condition completely characterizes first two ones in which three concepts of dominating graphs, median graphs and complement of minimal dominating sets get related:

Abstract:For a simple graph G=(V,E) without any isolated vertex, a co-secure dominating set S of G satisfies two properties, (i) S is a dominating set of G , (ii) for every vertex v∈S , there exists a vertex u∈V∖S such that uv∈E and (S∖{v})∪{u} is a dominating set of G . The minimum cardinality of a co-secure dominating set of G is called the co-secure domination number of G and is denoted by γcs(G) . The Co-secure Domination problem is to find a co-secure dominating set of a graph G of cardinality γcs(G) . The decision version of the problem is known to be NP-complete for bipartite, planar, and split graphs. On the other hand, it is also known that the Co-secure Domination problem is efficiently solvable for proper interval graphs and cographs. In an effort to reduce the complexity gap of the Co-secure Domination problem, in this paper, we work on various important graph classes. We show that the decision version of the problem remains NP-complete for doubly chordal graphs and for some subclasses of bipartite graphs, namely, chordal bipartite graphs, star-convex bipartite graphs, and comb-convex bipartite graphs. On the positive side, we give an efficient algorithm to compute the co-secure domination number of chain graphs, which is an important subclass of bipartite graphs. In addition, we show that the problem is linear-time solvable for bounded tree-width graphs and bounded clique-width graphs. Further, we establish that the computational complexity of this problem differs from that of the classical domination problem.

Complexity of total dominator coloring in graphs

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph with no isolated vertices. A vertex $v$ totally dominate a vertex $w$ ($w \ne v$), if $v$ is adjacent to $w$. A set $D \subseteq V$ called a total dominating set of $G$ if every vertex $v\in V$ is totally dominated by some vertex in $D$. The minimum cardinality of a total dominating set is the total domination number of $G$ and is denoted by $\gamma_t(G)$. A total dominator coloring of graph $G$ is a proper coloring of vertices of $G$, so that each vertex totally dominates some color class. The total dominator chromatic number $\chi_{td}(G)$ of $G$ is the least number of colors required for a total dominator coloring of $G$. The Total Dominator Coloring problem is to find a total dominator coloring of $G$ using the minimum number of colors. It is known that the decision version of this problem is NP-complete for general graphs. We show that it remains NP-complete even when restricted to bipartite, planar and split graphs. We further study the Total Dominator Coloring problem for various graph classes, including trees, cographs and chain graphs. First, we characterize the trees having $\chi_{td}(T)=\gamma_t(T)+1$, which completes the characterization of trees achieving all possible values of $\chi_{td}(T)$. Also, we show that for a cograph $G$, $\chi_{td}(G)$ can be computed in linear-time. Moreover, we show that $2 \le \chi_{td}(G) \le 4$ for a chain graph $G$ and give characterization of chain graphs for every possible value of $\chi_{td}(G)$ in linear-time.

Abstract:The dominating set problem (DSP) is one of the most famous problems in combinatorial optimization. It is defined as follows. For a given graph G=(V,E) , a dominating set of G is a subset S⊆V such that every vertex in V∖S is adjacent to at least one vertex in S . Furthermore, the DSP is the problem of finding a minimum-size dominating set and the corresponding minimum size, the domination number of G . In this, work we investigate a variant of the DSP, the super dominating set problem (SDSP), which has attracted much attention during the last years. A dominating set S is called a super dominating set of G , if for every vertex u∈S ̄=V∖S , there exists a v∈S such that N(v)∩S ̄=N(v)∖S={u} . Analogously, the SDSP is to find a minimum-size super dominating set, and the corresponding minimum size, the super domination number of G . The decision variants of both the DSP and the SDSP have been shown to be NP -hard. In this paper, we present tight bounds for the super domination number of the neighbourhood corona product, r -clique sum, and the Hajós sum of two graphs. Additionally, we present infinite families of graphs attaining our bounds. Finally, we give the exact number of minimum size super dominating sets for some graph classes. In particular, the number of super dominating sets for cycles has quite surprising properties as it varies between values of the set {4,n,2n,5n2−10n8} based on nmod4 .

Abstract:We say that a graph $H$ dominates another graph $H'$ if the number of homomorphisms from $H'$ to any graph $G$ is dominated, in an appropriate sense, by the number of homomorphisms from $H$ to $G$. We study the family of dominating graphs, those graphs with the property that they dominate all of their subgraphs. It has long been known that even-length paths are dominating in this sense and a result of Hatami implies that all weakly norming graphs are dominating. In a previous paper, we showed that every finite reflection group gives rise to a family of weakly norming, and hence dominating, graphs. Here we revisit this connection to show that there is a much broader class of dominating graphs.

Abstract:We show that the dominance complex $\mathcal{D}(G)$ of a graph $G$ coincides with the combinatorial Alexander dual of the neighborhood complex $\mathcal{N}(\overline{G})$ of the complement of $G$. Using this, we obtain a relation between the chromatic number $\chi(G)$ of $G$ and the homology group of $\mathcal{D}(G)$. We also obtain several known results related to dominance complexes from well-known facts of neighborhood complexes. After that, we suggest a new method for computing the homology groups of the dominance complexes, using independence complexes of simple graphs. We show that several known computations of homology groups of dominance complexes can be reduced to known computations of independence complexes. Finally, we determine the homology group of $\mathcal{D}(P_n \times P_3)$ by determining the homotopy types of the independence complex of $P_n \times P_3 \times P_2$.

A subset [math] of [math] is a dominating set of [math] if every vertex in [math] is adjacent to at least one vertex of [math]. The domination polynomial of [math] is the polynomial [math], where [math] is the number of dominating sets of [math] of size [math], and [math] is the size of a smallest dominating set of [math], called the domination number of [math]. Motivated by a conjecture in [S. Alikhani and Y. H. Peng, Introduction to domination polynomial of a graph, ARS Combin. 114 (2014) 257–266] which states that the domination polynomial of any graph is unimodal, we obtain sufficient conditions for this conjecture to hold. Also we study the unimodality of graph [math] with [math], where [math] is an integer.
